Non-existent usb drives

Hi, I've just picked up an IdeaCentre K230 with Vista (64). I didn't see any direct forums for this model, but I have a good idea this is a Vista problem more than a Lenovo prolem.
Since first boot I've seen several usb drives in "My Computer" that quite simply don't exist. These drives all disappear when I select one and choose the "Safely remove" option. This is pretty much just an annoyance, but I'd like to remove them anyway. Any information as to why these would show up, and how to remove them would be greatly appreciated.
Solved!

Do you have a memory card reader? Sometimes they show up that way.

  • CS3 Installer asks for non-existent DVD drive

I'm running CS3 on Windows XP. I need to reinstall because I somehow lost codecs for Premiere Pro. Whenever I try to reinstall, the CS3 installer puts up an Installer Alert that asks me to insert CS3 Master Collection Disc 1 into drive G:\ to continue installation.
That sounds pretty simple, but there is no G: drive on my computer. My two DVD drives are D: and E:, and inserting the disc there has no effect. Checking the Windows device manager shows no G: device recognized anywhere on the computer.
I can only click OK, which returns the same alert, or Cancel to cancel the installation. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to get the CS3 installer to ask for installation disks on an existing drive. What's particularly annoying is that the installer is running from a DVD in drive E:, so you'd think it would know to ask for further discs in drive E:. I've tried it as well from drive D:.
Any ideas for getting the installer to stop asking for discs in a non-existent drive?
I've toyed with the idea of completely uninstalling CS3, but am afraid that the installer still won't work, in which case I won't be able to get any work done using CS3 at all.
Thanks for any and all help,
    Mike Boom

  • How can I use a existing USB Driver in NI VISA 3.0

    Hello,
we have an ftdi USB driver for our measurement device.
The FTD2XX.sys is registred in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers
    Also I have a FTD2XX.dll and an FTD2XX.inf file.
But I don´t know how can I register them in NI LabView or VISA.
Have I to do a new *.inf file for VISA?
    Thank you
    Cedric

You can either use the manufacturer-supplied driver or NI-VISA to control your USB device but not both. If you have installed your device, each time you plug it in the FTD2XX.inf will associate your device with FTD2XX.sys. Then, you can use FTD2XX.dll to talk to your device using the call library function node. The DLL usually contains a whole bunch of useful functions that someone else already designed to talk to your device. This is the easier route and I would recommend it if you already have the DLL and the installed driver.
The second method would be to uninstall or disable the driver for your device and create an .inf file with NI-VISA Driver development wiazard. This .inf file will tell Windows to use VISA as your device driver. You will, however need the vendor and product ID of the device to use VISA as your driver. The details of this are outlined in the NI document "Using VISA 3.0 to control your USB device."
The drawback of this method is that VISA is just an API to talk to your device and you have to implement the communication protocol to talk to your device. This might take some time to do.
This is why I recommend the first method. Someone else already implemented the driver for your and you just have to use the functions from the dll to implement your application.
    Hope this helps.

  • Rescuing a non-mounting USB drive...

Is there anything I can do to rescue an external USB drive that won't mount?
Yesterday the drive didn't show up on the desktop. This had happened infrequently before, and unplugging the USB cord and re-plugging it in always solved the problem. Drive would immediately mount. However, this time I got the device removal error when I unplugged it, despite the fact the drive was NOT mounted on the desktop. And now the drive still won't show up on the desktop. What can I do to fix this WITHOUT erasing the data onboard? I need to keep (rescue) the files on this drive if at all possible.
    Troubleshooting info:
-drive doesn't show up on the desktop (can't access files at all)
-shows up in disk utility and passes disk verification ("appears to be okay")
-shows up correctly in the system profiler
-tried the other USB ports to rule out a port problem
-won't mount on my laptop either (G4, OS 10.4.7)
-spins up, sounds fine (no audible "dead-drive" noises)
-LaCie 160GB external USB drive on a G5, OS 10.4.7
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple Forums.
If it's not mounting on the desktop, but gives you a "unplugged" warning, that's a good sign.
You can use Data Rescue to "see" the drive and recover files.
    I would do that first.
Then I would search Apple main page for Onyx and run all the "Automation" followed by a reboot.
I would also seriously consider getting a external drive and learn how to clone my boot drive to it. You can hold option and boot from it, repair recover or simply reverse clone. It's also useful to isolate a problem in the OS or hard drive from the rest of the hardware. Not to mention saving your assets one day.
    Some cloning tips:
1: Always repair permissions before and after a clone on all drives.
2: Always Disk Utility Erase w/Zero option all new drive one time before loading them up with data. No matter how long it takes. Drives get mishandled and the result is bad sectors which corrupt data. This Zeroing maps off those bad sectors, and supposedly if you get enough, you'll get a SMART warning and can return the new drive.
3: Don't do anything else, run anything else during a cloning process. Reboot to shutdown Dashboard if you don't want to shutdown the widgets.
4: Keep cloning a whole boot drive to boot drive clone, until you learn more and can experiment with partial cloning (copying)
5: Option boot from the clone and check it out carefully, you might need it someday. Run all of OnyX "Automation" to clean things up a bit, do a little OS optimization.
6: You need a firewire 400/800 drive to clone to. It's best to have two or more OS clones, just in case. If clone #1 gets hooked up to a infected system, C boot from the installer disk and Erase w/Zero all infected drives, disconnect from internet before hooking up clone #2 to reverse clone from.
7: Visit donation-ware Carbon Copy Cloners forums for advice and software.

  • Should I use an existing usb driver or should I create my own?

We are developing a custom piece of hardware that uses a TI6250 chip to provide an USB communication channel. I read through the web reference http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/6792BAB18242082786256DD7006B6416?opendocument that seems to imply that I don't want to use any existing drivers but I need to create my own using the wizard.
I'm new to USB so I'm trying to get started off right so any advice for a novice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brad

What the wizard creates is a .inf file that contains manufacturer id, model number, etc. that defines the USB device that you want to talk to. On your custom board, you have to implement these settings in eeprom/flash. The TI chip driver tells your board pnly how to manage USB communication. You would also need to implement a means to interpret commands received into the hardware functions that are on your board. For example, if the text "RST" is received, intrepret that as a reset and set board level registers to do that. The LabVIEW driver would include a Reset VI. This VI would do a VISA Write with the text "RST". So what we're talking about is actually several different levels of drivers and code - VISA, the .inf file, the embedded code on your custom board, and LabVIEW VIs.

  • X61: Bios looks for non-existing CDROM drive?

    Hi,
I recently observe a problem with my X61. After the machine is power on, it stops (with a blank screen) for about half a minute before starting to boot Vista. I also notice that if I connect a USB CDROM drive to the machine, then it will not stop during the startup process. I think the problem is that the Bios is looking for a CDROM drive which is not there. Since this problem only happen recently, I suspect that it is due to a recent Bios update. I down-graded the bios from v2.20 to v2.19 but the problem still exists. Could anyone let me know which bios version should I downgrade to? Thanks.
    Best Regards,
    Daniel

Did you check the boot order in BIOS first? By default , the optical drive should be listed, then the HDD. Sometimes depending on your BIOS seup, you'll see one of of the USB devices listed first. If you power on the unit with a USB CDROM already attached  to the unit while turning it on, it's possible the BIOS will detect it and try booting from it.
Enter the BIOS at boot by tapping F1
Then Go to "Startup" , then "Boot"
Remember that you can also exclude any item you want BIOS boot order (normally by pressing "X") Use F5 and F6 to arrow up and down the Boot order.
You can also press F9 to try loading the BIOS defaults.
Let me know if this helps.
    Cheers,
    Mark

This may sound stupid but ever since i updated with 1.1.1 it says i have 4gb of 'other' on my iphone.
It also erased my itunes. I have 238mb of photos.
What does 'other' represent? Im referring to the little itunes bar at the bottom of the screen when syncing your iphone?
    Please help.

I had this happen once with the 1.01 software. A Restore fixed it.

  • PE12: asking "Where is file..." for a non-existent file

When opening a project in Adobe Premiere Elements 12, I'm getting the "Where is file..." pop up window.  It's asking ...
    "Where is the File 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Premiere Pro 1.5\Presets\Textures\Business Title_7.tga'?"
Which is odd because I didn't use any such file in the project, I only have Adobe Premiere Elements 12, and this is installed on a MacBookPro.  So I'm not sure why it's looking for a tga file in a Premiere Pro folder in a non-existent C:drive.
I only have two video clips in this project.  I'm using the cross-fade transition between titles and clips.  The title template I'm using is "RedBulbs_Title".  I've duplicated it several times and I seem to get that same "Where is.." pop up, one for each time I've used the "RedBulbs_Title" template.
Am I missing something in my installation?

    A.T.
I have a new project that I've created in Pe12.  I get the message every time I open the file to continue editing.  So, I created it, edited for a while, and save.  When I open the file again, days later, I get the error.
It does seem to be related to the titles in Pe12.  The error seems to occur once for every time the title template is used.  I dismiss the error saying the file is Offline so that I can get to the project and continue working.  Even though the file is considered "offline", the video doesn't seem to be mising any components.
I'm useing Pe12 for Mac, purchased new from Amazon.com.  It was a clean install.  There was no previous installation of Premiere Pro or Elements.
I have not imported any jpegs.  My source files are .mp4 and the title graphics within Pe12.  It's a very simple project.
The strangest part for me is seing a Windows error message on a Mac.  I've never even opened the Windows install disk for Pe12, much less used it in the Mac.
Using Finder to search for the missing file returns no results as if the file doesn't exist anywhere on the Mac.
Am I correct in that the Title clips in Pe12 are not on the installation but on the internet?  I seem to recall that the Title files had to download the first time I used a particular title in Pe.  Could it be a problem with the downloaded files?
I'm re-installing Pe now.  I'll let you know how that goes.
Re-installed over previous install hoping to avoid losing anything.  Big mistake.  Everything just crashes now.  Uninstalling everything, preferences and all, and will do a clean install.
    more to come.

  • [SOLVED!] On USB drives, problems with non-English chars and HAL

    Hello,
I am having a problem with non-English caracters (áãàçéẽê...) on files stored on my USB drive.
On Windows they're created with the correct name. But on Linux the files have the non-English characteres replaced by '?' and are not accessible.
If I manuallly mount the drives using 'mount -o iocharset=utf8 /dev/sdb1 /media/usbdisk' the characters are OK, so I think I just need to get HAL to pass the correct parameters to mount. However I don't know how to do that, and haven't found any good solution.
I tried to build a custom kernel setting the default charset as UTF-8 and it didn't work.
Any ideas? I'm using x86-64, HAL 0.5.13-3 and my locale is pt-BR.UTF-8.
    Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, this is not a HAL problem, but a problem with 'exo'. For the solution, I edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/mount.rc and added iocharset=utf8 to the [vfat] category.

I don't use Thunar presently, but I looked in the Thunar Volume Manager doc and I didn't find anything to change the mount options of removable drives. I am not quite sure if it's possible or not. Maybe someone using it can tell for sure.
But if it is not possible to change the mount options, a possible solution is to disable the Thunar Volume Manager plugin and to use something else more configurable to manage the automount function.
Personally I use the halevt package from AUR which uses configuration files in the xml format.
It's not so easy to use but is highly configurable.
But there exists other tools also.
I can help you with halevt if you choose that way...

  • Udev thinks there's a non-existent drive

    I have an error
[sdb] Asking for cache data failed
[sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
that is repeatedly output to my tty1 console (it outputs roughly every 50 seconds) and to my error logs.
The odd thing is that I have no sdb drive, which is presumably why the request for the cache data is failing. This is a laptop with the only hard disk as sda and the CD drive as sr0. There's nothing about sdb even mentioned in fstab or mtab.
But if I plug in my USB drive it is attached to sdc, so it thinks there's an sdb of some sort. When I plugged it in, I had similar messages:
[sdc] No Caching mode page present
[sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through
which was also displayed to tty1.
I was running a system fully updated as of that morning. udev had been updated the previous day so I reverted it back and the phantom drive problem went away. I assume this is a udev problem, both thinking that sdb exists and outputting annoying messages to tty1.
I've looked at the threads on here and the top results on Google (eg, a thread here. On LQ), but none of them has been useful for identifying the cause of the problem nor for suppressing the output. I tried doing update-usbids.sh and update-pciids, but that didn't fix anything. initscripts was also updated at the same time and I looked at that, but saw nothing in the changes that looked possibly related to udev.
    So my questions are:
Why does udev think this phantom sdb exists and how to I eliminate it?
On a side note, why on earth does it output on tty1, and how do I stop that?

I have problem with mass storage device here too. It is strange because a lot of people does not seem to have this problem. I use Arch64. Are you using too Arch64? That could explain why so few people are having this problem?
I don't know if my problem is the same but I can't read anymore some of my usb mass storage devices!
Here I can read a USB stick with a single partition:

Feb 19 10:31:25 localhost kernel: [22804.797761] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI removable disk
and things go well, I can read the usbstick in Nautilus etc...
I have a external harddrive that have more than one partition, with linux partitions. fdsik recocgnise the disk so that I can find the right partitions to mount and I can mount manually one the partition which holds a reiserfs but it fails to mount one of the other partition. My iMac can read the USB without a problem, but the MacBook Pro will not. Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.
