Non Functioning CD/DVD Reader/Burner

I have a circa 2005-6 iMac with a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06 that does not eject CDs or DVDs. I brought it to the Genius bar where a mechanical failure was diagnosed. A replacement would cost $239 without tax. Given the age of the computer I would rather opt for an external unit with the idea of buying a new iMac in the future. What would be the best product for my iMac?

I've owned a LaCie external burner for several years and it's been solid and dependable - you can check their newer models here:

Got a external USB DVD reader/burner Logitech model LDR-PMD8U2LBK.
I plug the device, use the adapter but nothing happens. I tried to boot the computer with the driver plugged in, again, nothing. If I put a DVD in the driver, I hear the machine buffer but on the screen, nothing. Checked all the view options, everything is selected. It doesn't appear in the Disk Utility neither. Tried to open a DVD with VLC Player, to no avail. Checked on Logitech's site, there are no drivers for this driver. The seller told me that it should be compatible with my black macbook, I guess there is still a possibility that it is not...

You shouldn't need drivers for a USB or Firewire connected external device.

  • External dvd reader/burner doesn't show in Finder

Hi and thanks in advance for your help -
I've just purchased an external dvd burner because the pre-super drive dvd reader in my macbook is getting a little tires. It doesn't appear in the finder, but when I check with the System Profiler or Disk Utility application, it is listed there. It's a no-brand dvd burner (from the Fnac chain in France) which appears as a "Slimtype DVD A DS8A3S", am I missing something here?
    Thanks

That was the next question I was going to ask.
If your external DVD player has its own power supply, you should definitely use it. If it came with 2 USB cables, it's in your best interest to use both of them with DVD player. One will be responsible for transferring data from the DVD player to the computer, along with supplying some power. The second cable will provide the rest of the power for the drive

  • Non-functioning monitor, please read and help!

    Hello everyone!
We have had wonderful function from our 24inch iMac for over 2 years now. We've never had a problem with it and it mostly functions for family entertainment. It is not overworked graphically besides some gaming.
Anyways, usually the computer does stay on for extended periods of days, however it is always put into sleep mode at night. This morning when we go to wake it up, nothing happens. We can hear the computer working in the background, can turn volume up/down, eject disk, etc. We have not upgraded anything recently, added new applications, or changed/added hardware. Using a flashlight on the screen reveals no image at all, doesn't seem like just the backlight is out. I've tried manual restart, leave comp unplugged for an hour, reset pram/nvram, but nothing.
By your expert opinion, where do we go from here? Is there something obvious we're missing, or is this the end of the road for the monitor? Thanks for your time!

Hi, Welcome to the discussion area!
If you have a 24" iMac you have an Intel-based iMac not an iMac G5. You really should post in the Intel-based iMac discussion area.

  • Boot Camp - External DVD Reader (Mac Compatible)

    To all,
I am not able to get Boot Camp to load vista from the external CD-ROM since the internal one is totaly disconnected. It does nothing. It spins the CD when it restarts then continues on to loading the login screen.
Bare with me - this is the fun part -
I got a 24" white iMac. CD-ROM was stuck and refused to take in new CD's. Took it to Apple, they replaced it. I bring it back home 2 days later and the screen is dented. They fix that in 4 days. Now I am finally able to start installing Vista.
Put the CD in - nothing happens - it kicks it out!!!! Well - its brand new - its even a different brand than what was in there before.
I take it back to apple, i give the lady all the **** in the world because this is not supposed to happen, etc.
They decide to give me a new iMac. While I am waiting, the manager approaches me and give me the 13 cents which were found in the cd-rom drive (thanks to my kids)
So I appologize - totaly ignored her wanting $450 to replace it, so I went and bought a Sony external DVD reader, burner.
    -- Problem --
Boot Camp, Front Row + the DVD player software won't work off the external drive.
I took the mac appart - disconnected the dvd-drive from the motherboard thinking that if its not there, then boot camp will attempt to run off the external drive.
Put it back together - and rebooted - everything came up fine until using front row or the dvd player.
Boot Camp still won't read the external drive - no errors nothing - it attempts then quits and moves to the login screen.
Guys - I need help - i make my living off Windows so not having access to it - its killing me.
Please do not recommend parallels or anything else like it.
I am willing to try anything at this point. Before I go and spend $450 i will rather buy a new machine.
    HELP!!! Anyone Please!!!!

I doubt there is any way to get the external to work with the Windows install. It's magic that the internal works! However, since you are not afraid to rip the iMac apart, a Google of 'imac internal dvd drive' shows that you can get a replacement for well under $450.

  • DVD Drive Non-Function Mac Mini 3,1 (late 2009)

    Hi
The DVD drive in my Mac Mini has recently become non-functional, "About this Mac" sees the drive fine,
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:
      Model:          OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S
      Revision:          2AHI
      Native Command Queuing:          No
      Detachable Drive:          No
      Power Off:          No
      Async Notification:          Yes
      Bay Name:          Upper
But when you insert a disc there is no response, it does not see to attempt to read it just ejects after about 20-30 seconds.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem? This issue started sometime after I upgraded the memory, but I cannot be sure that the two things are connected as I very rarely use the DVD drive and the first time I tried to use it was several months later.
    Many Thanks

Optical drives are pretty short lived in my experience.
    Might try a cleaning Disc.

  • SuperDrive does not read DVDs, but burns them correctly.

    Here is what happens:
DVD Rom (CS4 DVD: doesn't read, OSX 10.5 DVD: reads) STRANGE...
DVD-R Video and DVD-R Rom (burned today by this MacPro with Disk Utility and Verified OK: Asks what to do - like with empty DVDs. On the iMac the same DVD video works perfectly)
    CD works fine
I already reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but didn't work.
    Any suggestion?

On an iMac here it works perfectly. I forgot to mention that, but I tried of course. None of the 4 DVD rom from the CS4 design premium works on the Mac Pro.
The strange thing is that the OSX install DVD works, the iLife 09 DVD works as well.
The CS4 DVD rom does not.
Another VERY strange thing is that I burned a DVD video from Disk Utility (from an iDVD img file). After the DVD was finished Disk Utility verified the burned data, everything was ok so it ejected the DVD.
I loaded the disk back in and the Finder said: Empty disk, open in finder, disk utility, etc... Then I loaded the disk in the iMac and the DVD player started to play back the DVD-R.
The system was upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, so I tried with a clean install I have on a secondary disk (I thought about broken extensions due to the upgraded OS). The problem stays the same.
This makes me think it is a problem not depending from the OS installation, but maybe from PRAM or NVRAM or other stuff on a different layer. I reset PRAM and the problem is still there.
Maybe I need to reset the firmware of the Superdrive or get some suggestion on a physical cleaning of the device, maybe it's just some dust in there...

  • DVD burner won't read burned DVD's

We have a dual 2Ghz G5 with 2.5Gb's of ram that used to be able to read DVD's that had been burned. Now it will read only commercial DVD's and CD's (it can burn CD's fine). It won't accept non-burned DVD-R's either.

    Hi.
I have almost the same problem:
I bought an PM G5 2x2Ghz with 1Ghz of RAM in november 2003, and my superdrive is a model PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D that used to brun any kind of dvd's an cd's and had no problem to read burn dvd's.
But now, it can only burn DVD-R (but no problem for the CD's) and most of the old Dvd's that i burned on my G5 can't be read anymore.
Can someone tell me what's the problem and how can it be solved.
    thank you very much.
    bye.
PS: Is it normal thaht i've never been able to read a DVD's burned from windows on MAC OSX but CD's yes?

  • External Drive Reads Burned DVDs

I replaced the original drive with a Pioneer that lasted about 1 year, sent it in for repair and got a sony. It does the same thing as the pioneer, burns but won't read dvds. Tried serveral brands of dvds, no change. It reads commercial dvds and cds cdrs ok. So I took the pioneer when it came back from service and hooked it up to a usb case and it will read the burned dvds.?! I guess you need an external dvd reader......
    Steve

Several of us create a disk image, burn a DVD, and move the disk image (.img) to an external HD for future use.
Don't count on any recordable DVD to be good "down the road." Well, maybe Verbatim's Archival Grade DVD.
BTW, If I'm doing movies, I export the edited version back to MiniDV tape. That's the best backup.

  • Unable to read burned dvd, unable to format dvd, and unable to burn dvd

Unable to read burned dvd, unable to format dvd, and unable to burn dvd with my HP G62-339WM Notebook PCI have been unable to perform the Windows back up for months without using new discs. But even after using new discs Windows backup tells me that the disc that I previously used that it is asking to insert is not formatted. I also have not been able to read any dvds that I previously burned, instead it will sometimes recognize them as blank and they are not.  I also cannot perform a format on new dvd discs nor burn to them. I have been able to read some previously burned discs on another pc but not the discs that were created with Windows backup. I have tried everything. I have uninstalled the device, ran the fix it, tried troubleshooting, checked the registry and could not find the upper and lower filters listed. I am however able to read program software and the autorun pops up. Once in a while the autorun will pop up when a blank disc is inserted but then that is all the further I am able to use it. I don't know what else to do. I really want to be able to at least burn files to back up so that they are not lost forever. Please help!

Fixed it myself - for some reason the La Cie refused to read the media. Had to use another machine to pull the data from the drive, copy it over the network to my iMac and then mount the ISO image.

  • New MacBook Pro doesn't read burned content on DVD-R

    Hello,
I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro (MC700; Matshita DVD-R UJ-8A8) over the weekend, and it can't seem to read burned content on a DVD-R. I tried inserting it a couple of times and it just kept on reading it as blank. I tried the DVD-R on another MacBook (bought early 2010) and it seemed to read the DVD-R well. I went to the Apple Reseller to have the issue fixed. They tried it on their testing units and the DVD-R worked perfectly well. They replaced the unit with a new one, but when they tried the DVD-R, it would not read again. They called someone up and the explanation they gave me was that Apple was able to develop an optical drive which rejects burned content because of its strong anti-piracy views. Is this true? The files in the DVD-R are documents and .avi files that were edited for school and are not pirated. Anybody else have a problem with this?
Please confirm if the "technology" about burned content is true. I am not a techie, so I am asking help. I rely heavily on burned DVD-Rs for its convenience. If it is true, then I must have spent a lot of money on something I couldn't really use.

There is no such animal as an intel G5. Intel based towers are now called Mac Pros. G5 towers run the PowerPC chips.
If you have the MacPro at work, then yes, something else would seem to be amiss.
If you have a G5 at work, then it could still be the universal binary issue.

  • Tx2z - CPU non-functional?

Hi, my tx2z died on me this morning around 5 am when I tried to turn it on to finish up some engineering homework. The computer power on, fan on for a bit, but it got stuck on the black screen with blinking caplock and numlock light.
I don't know if this have anything to do with it, but now I think about it, it might be related. Last time I use it, it was the same day, or night, around midnight. I was working on some physics homework on the laptop with my friend. So I finished my part, and went over to help her. So when I tried to show her how to solve the equation on the calculator, we got a static electirc shock, and I didn't even touch her. Ok, so we laughed about it since we are doing stuffs dealing with electric fields. When we finally finished at 1, I went back to my dorm with the laptop, put it down to let it charge. Then when I try to do my engineering homework soon after with the computer, I was shocked again. This time by touching the comptuer.
So I believe my Tx2z died because of "CPU non-functional" according to the LED Blink Sequence table. The LED only blinked once in each cycle. Is that correct?
So if this is the case, what are my options? I doubt I am still under warrenty, since I just got the laptop before going to college 2 years ago. CPU non-funcational means that the CPU is dead and need replacement, right? And if I am correct, it is usually not possible to install new cpu in laptop. So I need to send it in and let them replace it? Will it be cheaper with I just go buy a new computer?
I am still hoping that it is not the CPU problem, since I really like this laptop, it is really not that old, and I have been taking care of it. It does overheat very easily though, sometime burn my hand when I am doing some 3D modeling / rendering. But even on power saving mode, when I am just checking email, it still overheated.
Any replies, helps, suggestions will be appreciated, thanks.

yup, I have pretty much given up by now. I started to make a list of hardwares that I want to buy to assemble a new computer. Tablet is good, but the fact that it can't last me through college, that's just sad. So $400 to repair, and the new computer that I am planning to put together cost around $500. I think I will go with the new one with way more processing power, way better cooling, and most important, the ability to upgrade / replace broken parts without having to pay a fortune.
    LIST
Case, power supply, motherboard w/ ATI HD4250, AMD Phenom ii x4 3.4 Ghz, 4 GB DDR3, 1 TB HDD, DVD Burner, Card Reader...
So as for the tablet, I am starting to harvest parts from it. So far, ripped the hard drive out to recover some data and to use as an portable hard drive. Will probably take the RAM out in a day or two. The ony big disappoinment about not fixing the tablet is that the touchscreen is pretty much wasted, since I have no clue how to utilize that. Wish I have taken Computer or Electrical Engineering.

  • Combo Drive Plays DVDs, reads data CDs, ejects commerical CDs...

My Combo Drive currently will not:
    -burn CDs
    -play music (commercial) CDs
    -load software (commercial) CDs
    It will:
    -play DVDs
-recognize and read previously burned (non-commerical) data CDs
Commercial CDs are not recognized--the drive struggles with them for a minute or so and then ejects them.
I've read of similar problems elsewhere, but my situation seems a bit different because the computer will recognize and read previously burned data CDs, so I don't think it's a problem with the lasers. What is different about commercial music and software CDs? Also, what would that have to do with problems burning data? Could this be a software issue?
    Thanks

I read elsewhere on the site about resetting the PRAM and that solved the problem. Drive functions normally now.
