Non-interlaced Graphics and NTSC output

I have animations created at NTSC D1 720x486, 30fps, non interlaced.
I convert them to 720x480, 29.97 fps and export as Lossless QT via AE.
I then compress them using Compressor 90min preset, drop them into DVDSP and burin a disc.
Encode options:
Field Order: auto
Mode: Two Pass
bit rate 5.0
max 6.0
motion estimation: Best
I get crawl. I tried applying lower field dominance via AE and replacing the clips in DVDSP and it looked worse.
What do I need to do to make non-interlaced animation play smoothly and look on a tv the way it looks now on my desktop?
Is the answer(s) in Compressor? AE? DVDSP?
I tried a search before posting but I didn't find an answer.

AE and replacing the clips in DVDSP and it looked worse.
Second thing first: unless you are working on a 24p comp in AE, you should be exporting with lower field dominance. In fact, if you work in 24p in AE, you would still pick lower field dominant but then pick a pulldown pattern to apply as well.
So when you say you get "crawl" (i.e. it looks like a moving marquee around borders), then that's a function of using overly-saturated colors in your animations. You won't see the crawl until you view it on a TV. You'll see worse crawl when viewing it via composite or (ick) RF-modulated connections. You won't see it as much, or at all, on S-video or component connections, but anyone else viewing it via composite or RF will still see it.
The only solution is to use AE's Broadcast Safe filter, or run things through Final Cut and use its broadcast safe filters along with its range check view.
The other possibility is that what you're seeing isn't actually crawl. So you might need to describe the problem you're seeing in more detail if that's not the case.

  • Non NVidia graphics card issues with Adobe and Mountain Lion

It took me a while to figure it out, but now I am certain. If using a Mac with a non nvidia graphics card there will be issues in Mountain Lion while using Adobe products. I tested this with Illustrator CS6 for over a year on 5 different Mac computers.
    Here is what happens
As soon as I open Illustrator on a Mac without a NVidia graphics card and I attend to apply an shadow effect, Illustrator crashes. If I do this procedure on a Mac with a NVidia inside, all works well.
I tested this on the following Macs
MacBook Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia 9600M GT - it works
MacBook Pro (Early 2011) with Radeon 6750M - doesn't work
Mac Pro (Early 2009) with Radeo HD 5770 - doesn't work
The same Mac Pro (Early 2009) with NVidia GT120 - it works
MacBook Air (Mid 2012) with Intel HD 4000 - doesn't work
iMac (Late 2012) with NVidia 680MX - it works
Since I owned all these Macs, I could test it several times with different kind of software updates. 10.8, 10.8.1, 10.8.2 and 10.8.3 did deliver the same result. Everytime the same result.
Already got in touch with Adobe
With Illustrator CS5 it worked like a charme, so I assumed it could be an Adobe issue. But Adobe support told me, it's Apple's fault since 10.8 uses different processes for the graphics performance.
What can be done, to resolve this issue? I cannot buy only Macs with NVidia inside, since the small portable front of Macs is only coming with Intel graphics cards. And is there anybody out there, having this issue? I cannot be the only one, using shadows in Illustrator.

A typical response.  IMO it's most likely a combination of Adobe's reluctance to fix the issue combined with Apple's desire for advancement and change.  I've personally experienced several things that've become broken owing to Apple changing fundamental aspects of the OS, and the developers of the third-party software in question have either never fixed their software, or are taking their sweet time.  WireTap Studio and Snapz Pro from Ambrosia are a case in point, though they eventually fixed Snapz Pro.  Eventually…
Frankly, good luck getting either side to do anything about this.  Your best bet is probably getting in touch with AppleCare and seeing if you can get this escalated to Engineering, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix from either party.  Or perhaps one of the Apple mailing lists will prove useful.

  • NTSC and PAL output

    Hello,
I'm working on Macbook Pro with Final Cut Express and I-DVD. I am editing a video that I would like to output as both PAL DVD and NTSC DVD. Is this possible? Footage is recorded on Sony HD Z1E - as PAL 1080i(50). If I capture and edit in Final Cut Express, can I output the timeline as a quicktime file both in NTSC and PAL? Can I use I-DVD to create both PAL and NTSC DVDs? Have had a look at the user manuals, but am not really clear on if and how it is possible.
    Any ideas welcome! Thanks.

    Hi,
I have read this thread but am a little unclear and would appreciate some help.
I have shot 3 short movies in PAL anamorphic, edited in Final Cut Express HD 3.5, exported using the Quicktime Movie option, altered with QT Pro to put back to anamorphic, then added to an iDVD '08 widescreen project.
Everything is fine, but I have realised that some of the recipients are in the Bahamas and require NTSC.
The project is a paid commission so I want to ensure the conversion is as good as possible, without any re-digitising / editing.
I duplicated my iDVD project and have used the project info pane to change to NTSC format. I deleted the encoded assets and this has set of iDVD to re-encode. Is a re-burn all that is required once encoding is done?
It seems this is the easiest option, but are you suggesting the conversion can be better if i use the free JES deinterlacer product.
To integrate this into my workflow I am assuming I could duplicate my asset folder (that contains the quicktime exports from Final Cut) and convert them using JES.
Modification to these quicktimes (ie. a re-edit and export from Final Cut) would usually result in iDVD updating its content upon open.
Am I on the right track?
I have had a quick look at JES. I have added a file to convert and looked at the projects tab.
Do I just have to choose "Standards conversion" & select "NTSC"? What should I set out of "Blend, Telecine or Minimal Blend" for best quality.
I am using an Intel iMac with 2gb of memory.
    Thanks
    Eric

  • Importing and handling progressive (non-interlaced) video...

Hi, have searched around and can't quite find the answer to my problem so I hope somebody can help...
Ive recently aquired a Sony TRV 900 (3ccd) which has a progressive shooting option. Apart from a strange semi-strobing effect on that sometimes occurson fast moving objects this option generally seems fine in good light.
I can import into Final Cut Express (v1) ok, and when I view the clip frame by frame (with the arrow keys) every single frame is clear, crisp, free of jaggies etc.
As soon as I play it back (either as a clip or in a sequence) it appears to be lower quality somehow and there is lots of nasty aliasing or jaggies. Pausing restores the image quality back to normal.
Ive messed with various options available when putting the browser into list view. (PAL or square ratios etc). Even tried exporting a final cut express movie, to view in Quicktime but the quality never matches that of a frame by frame playback in FCE. The exported versions if viewed frame by frame lack also lack the higher quality.
I cannot find any sort of interlace or field options during the import stage but as my 'stills' are great I assume it's either the preview playback or the rendered export at fault, but it's driving me pretty crazy! lol
Even though footage may end up on a dvd at some point (ie. interlaced, right?), I would still like progressive versions to create web versions etc.
Am I completely missing the point here or something?
Hope somebody is able to shed a little light here for me?!
    Thanks in advance...

As far as i know, Final Cut Express (at least the version i've used which is version 2) assumes you are working with interlaced video and that is that. In Final Cut Pro there is the option to work with progressive footage, but i think FCE just assumes you are using interlaced, and doesn't allow you to change that.
The way you are describing it, it does sound like it is playing progressive footage when in an interlaced mode. A similar thing happens when you play interlaced footage in a progressive mode. It looks absolutely fine when you look at a single frame, but once playing it has lines and artifacts around edges.
I'm not sure if there's anything you can do about that. I'd like to be wrong though.

  • Adobe media encoder CS4 - alised graphics and small black bars at 480x360 for web---HELP!

I recently installed the CS4 premiere software with Adobe Media encoder. I encode video for the web.
I have been a professional web video producer for over 10 years and have been using adobe products my whole career
    My issues are:
         1)  I can not get clean edges on my graphics when exporting a flash video (.flv or .f4v) using "field order: progressive" as it should be for web output. All my graphics are high quality and I have tryed many formats (.eps, .psd, .gif ,jpg, .pnd) but once I change the field order drop down in the encoder settings to "(none) progressive" the graphics become alised...
         2) My videos which are  a size of 480x360 now have small black bars at the top and bottom after encoding the original down to 480x360. I have tried to crop the video so the bar go away but the whole  video get fuzzy...WTF
I have spent so many hours reading and searching trying to fix these two issued and I am thinking that I am going back to my old software and discrediting the new adobe product every chance i get!!!!!!!!!!
I was previously using premiere pro 1.5, editing video and graphics and then exporting an uncompressed .mov file and then used Flash 8 Video Encoder to render a .flv file. This produced great video with crisp graphics.
    PLEASE HELP

    Stan,
I was using the on2VP6 codec at data rates from 275k to 400k with good results. -- with the new CS$ endcoder i am used h.264 at 500k to 700k, video quality looks good but the graphic overlays look like alised crap. In the encoder settings the edges of the graphics get jaged when I make the field order progresive...
I am starting with DV NTSC video at 720x480.
I am going to go back to my old work flow and test it. The settings are a bit different from premiere pro 1.5 to CS4 -- in 1.5 i could export out an unconpressed .mov with square px and then bring that large file to flash media encoder to create the .flv

  • How to edit with non-interlaced playback - for square pixel art?

I'm working with PNG sequenced images from Flash. I'm compositing in AE and I export an QT movie in "Animation" compression, 100% quality. The exported movie is as 'clean' as a Flash swf. This becomes my source movie for Premiere CS3.
When I bring my scenes to edit in Premiere CS3 I can't figure how to set up the project so the the final out-put is non-interlaced. I want the quality of the final movies to be as clean (non-interlaced) as my source movies.
I would like to work in non-DV format since my source movies are made from square pixel art (Flash & Photoshop). This process works great in Premiere 5.1, is it possible in CS3?
I work on PC - XPpro

    Jim,
Thank you for responding to my post. My question is can I edit and output in Non-DV format (non-interlaced video) with CS3?
I mentioned using Flash because I wanted it to be known I was starting with square pixel art. My final goal is to make DVD movie. I use Premiere to edit the scenes. I work in animation, some traditional hand drawn, painted in Photoshop, and some Flash generated. My end results needs to be a high resolution QT movie.
I've been using Premiere 5.1 and for years (Premiere 4 before that). I would like use Premiere CS3, but I need to export without the interlaced video. Can this be done in Premiere CS3?

  • Clean sharp psd graphics and premiere titles until I render?

    Hello,
I'm importing beautiful layered psd graphics and creating titles with premiere on a 720P DVCPROHD timeline.
These graphics and titles look great when they are still red bar...then after I render I get the same old ugly jagged edges I have always seen.
Can anyone explain why this is?  And is there a fix?
Thanks for your advise in advance!
    Mark

    Thanks for the input.
I am viewing on my computer monitor because I don't have a video board for external output. I need to render out to a DVD for final playback, so I am stuck making adjustment on my computer screen. I am editing a progressive timeline so isn't my "Premiere program monitor" computer screen accurate for progressive material or is premiere always converting to interlaced?
My preview playback codec is set to DVCproHD 720p.
I just now tried setting my render quality and bit depth quality to max...this slows down the render time and the rendered graphic images still become jagged.
If I render out to a progressive DVD should this jagged edges clean up?
Rushing to get a project out.....don't have much time to investigate it.
    Thanks,

  • HP ENVY 17 microphone and sound output problems

Hey i have a HP ENVY 17, and i have been having some problems with the microphone, sound outputs and the sound in general. The microphone output haven't been working ever since i got the notebook in November. at first i thought it was problems with the settings, either on the computer or on Skype, which i used for communication. I tried with other Voice Chat programs such as Mumble, Ventrilo and TeamSpeak - neither worked. I got a friend over who knows a little bit about computers, and the only thing he could think of was that the microphone output was non working. I am using Steelseries 7H headset. Now i have to use the integrated microphone which often gives background or typing noise.
Lately i am only hearing sound on the right ear, i have checked my headphones with an iPod, so i know there is nothing wrong with them.
The third problem occurs when i turn the volume over 20% on the computer. It starts to make a background noise, almost like a waterfall, both with headset and without.
Another little problem i have is nothing to do with sound, but since I'm posting this already, i thought i could atleast ask. When i play games the top left side of the computer, right over the fan can get hot while the fan is working on hardmode. If i play really graphic-focused games, like Crysis 2, it gets super hot(i burn my hand if i hold it over the fan). Is this just because it's a laptop and the games demands too much? Or is it dust in the fan or something? And what can i do about it? That last question counts for all the problems
    Thank you on beforehand
    - Kirrod

I still need help, if there are anyone here who thinks they have any kind of solution to my problem. Like; how do i get it repaired? Send it to HP? How long will it take?
Im sorry if my english is not so good, it's my second language. It might be called microphone input, and not output. The place you put in the microphone cable.
    Please help!

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • How to convert HD DVD to SD in PAL and NTSC - is the MXO2 the magic bullet?

I edited a 1 hour-long video of my college class reunion in FCP Studio 2, exported via Compressor and finally made it into a DVD with menus via DVDSP. Very neat so far, but there's a problem - the DVD is in HD, but I need to convert it to SD PAL to distribute to my old pals in the UK and SD NTSC for those who made it to the USA.
I'd like to do that without re-doing all the fancy menu-work in DVDSP, but how? Can anyone advise me, will the new Matrox MXO2 convert an input HD PAL signal to an SD PAL / or SD NTSC output which can be re-acquired into DVDSP and burned to disk?
Advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Jerry, I appreciate your help with this. I exported the film from FCPS2 via Compressor as a PAL SD .mov, located the correct HD video asset in the DVDSP Build folder and replaced it with the new SD version, renamed to look like the HD asset.
On re-opening the project, DVDSP registers the fact that the video asset has changed (mainly affects menu items), but despite ensuring Preferences is set for SD, there seems no way of changing the format of its output from HD to SD.
Trying to hide the HD video asset in a sub-folder doesn't work - DVDSP re-names the new SD video as Filename (Video) 1.
Build command creates an HVDVD_TS folder containing the usual HD-type files. Creating a template in the hope of using the menu structure in a new SD project results in all the HD video assets coming with it.
I'm sure I'm being stupid, as usual, but can you point me in a better direction?
    Thanks

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 15" (non-retina) graphics tearing

    Hello everyone,
I would like to post my experiences using two identical macbook pros 2012 (non-retina, with nVidia GT650M 512MB) who presented the same graphics cards glitches and problems, and hopefully to obtain some information.
Exhibit 1: My own macbook pro
Bought from France, in November 2012. Used mainly for professional non-graphics programming, it's clean, no bloated software, and only necessary professional tools are installed. 16Gbytes of memory, by Crucial.
At some point during July, when the machine was relatively cold and I was watching a youtube video, this happened (see attached pics). The mouse was moving, and the computer was fully operational, but with this "glitchy graphics overlay". I logged out, and logged back in. Problem disappeared and appeared again at random times, 4 times during an hour. All those times, a log-out and log-in would fix the problem. After that, I could not reproduce it. Apple changed the motherboard, claiming that it could be a faulty nVidia card.
Exhibit 2: My brother's macbook pro
Bought from Greece, in february 2013. Same model as my own, same RAM, same specs. Used for professional video editing, no bloated software, mostly using Final Cut Pro X. He noticed various malfunctions with FCPX, like freezing when applying a visual effect, and graphics tearing when rendering (that's when the nVidia card kicks in, normally). Yesterday, same symptoms as my macbook pro appeared, graphics tearing, etc.
    EDIT: videos of the problem:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGBijGMO9NE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnEXtVWgKKM
Both machines are in a completely different environment (I live in France, my brother in Greece), non-smoking areas, and have worked in completely different ways. Both with OS X 10.8.4.
That's two out of two. Given nVidia's background, I am starting to feel that my purchase is not so reliable as I originally thought, and I am thinking that this problem is more generic than originally seemed.
Does anyone have any relevant information on this matter? Could these problems be related to issues with nVidia drivers? Is there any information about unreliable nVidia graphics cards on 15 inch macbook pros mid-2012 (non-retina)?

    Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Copy and paste graphics and text in Acrobat 9 Pro

I'm a new user of Acrobat Pro and am trying to copy a combination of text and graphics from the top half of a page to the blank bottom half of the page. I've not had much success with what I thought would be a simple thing to do and would welcome suggestions. Here's a summary of the options I've tried so far for graphics, text, and both text and graphics.
    A. Graphic Alone:
    1. When I use the Select Object Tool, I can highlight the graphic but when I unclick the left mouse button, the highlighting disappears, so I can't copy the graphic.
    2. When I use theTouchup Object Tool, only an oblong portion of the graphic is highlighted when I click on the object. The only way to highlight all of the graphic is to hold down the shift key and click on successive portions of the graphic until I have highlighted all of it. When I then right-click the mouse, I can copy the graphic. However, when I then place the mouse cursor in the bottom half of the page and do a righ-click paste, the graphic appears to be pasted on top of the original graphic. I can then drag the graphic to the bottom half of the page. I can also paste the object on to a blank page from Create PDF>Blank Page. Overall, this is not elegant nor intuitive, but it does work.
    B. Text Alone:
    1. I can copy the text but when it is pasted, it is not formatted like the orginal, nor can I place it where I want on the bottom half of the page. This is true whenther I use the basic copy function or the Touchup Text Tool.
    2. When I use the Touchup Object Tool and click on the text, Acrobat places similarly-formatted text in a box that I can then right-click and copy. I can then paste the text on a blank page with the text formatted identical to the way it was on the original page. With several blocks of text formatted differently, this procedure could work but would require a lot of work to create a format with placement identical to the original.
    C. Text and Graphics Together
    1. When I use the Touchup Object Tool and attempt to highlight the top half of the page, the Tool insists on including the blank bottom half of the page in its selection. I can copy everything on the page but I haven't found a way to select just the objects in the top half of the page -- I can copy some, but the selected objects aren't highlighted and so this isn't a satisfactory route. It seems obvious to me that Touchup Object should be able to select just the objects I want. But then, even the Select Object Tool doesn't do that, either -- it Selects an object but then you can't do anything with the object.
    2. Using the snapshot tool, I can highlight both graphics and text and copy them -- I can even export them them to another program via the clipboard and create an external file. However -- regardless of whether I just copy and paste, or do a  Touchup Object file import, or whether the file is bitmap or jpg -- when I paste the resulting object or file onto a page in Acrobat, the image always comes out at 200% of its orginal size. I looked for a Resize option, but couldn't find one.
This is all very time-consuming and frustrating since what I am trying to do is not rocket science. Surely there is a simple way to do this.
By the way, there are no security restrictions on the file.
    George

    Hi,
In response to both "...is that normal?" — Yes.
PDF is not a file format meant to support editing of layout/format/etc or text content creation.
You'd master content in an authoring application (FrameMaker, InDesign, MS Word, etc.).
The PDF file is the output of this mastered content.
Some minor touchups are possible with Acrobat (think whiteout/correction tape on a printed piece of paper -- PDF page content is the electronic "finished paper").
With that said, you might play with File > Create PDF > From Blank Page and use the Typewriter tool to enter text.
To output MS Word content to PDF use the Adobe PDFMaker.
Prior to Word 2007, you'd use "Adobe PDF" on the menu line.
With Word 2007, you'd use the Acrobat Ribbon features.
    Be well...

  • Non-Interlaced DV

    Hi!
Can you confirm that FCE HD 3.0 does not support non-interlaced DV video for rendered material but anything that does not require rendering will remain in it's native non-interlaced format?
What appens if I import and render (after an operation) non-interlaced DV video in FCE HD 3.0?
    Thanks!

Yes, FCE always renders interlaced, but it depends what you do; it not matter.

  • Remoting and localized output from executables

Hello all, I am in need of a bit of assistance.
We have client computers which have non-English Windows 7, and thus any executable that produce output produce non-English output. This is not a problem when using PowerShell locally, all localized output is displayed properly.
Problems arise when using PowerShell remoting, where output does not display non-English characters correctly. Examples of native executables which produce incorrect output: ipconfig, ping, wingmmt.
    Host's output encoding:
    IsSingleByte      : True
    BodyName          : ibm850
    EncodingName      : Western European (DOS)
    HeaderName        : ibm850
    WebName           : ibm850
    WindowsCodePage   : 1252
    IsBrowserDisplay  : False
    IsBrowserSave     : False
    IsMailNewsDisplay : False
    IsMailNewsSave    : False
    EncoderFallback   : System.Text.InternalEncoderBestFitFallback
    DecoderFallback   : System.Text.InternalDecoderBestFitFallback
    IsReadOnly        : True
    CodePage          : 850
    Remoting output encoding:
    IsSingleByte      : True
    BodyName          : iso-8859-1
    EncodingName      : Western European (Windows)
    HeaderName        : Windows-1252
    WebName           : Windows-1252
    WindowsCodePage   : 1252
    IsBrowserDisplay  : True
    IsBrowserSave     : True
    IsMailNewsDisplay : True
    IsMailNewsSave    : True
    EncoderFallback   : System.Text.InternalEncoderBestFitFallback
    DecoderFallback   : System.Text.InternalDecoderBestFitFallback
    IsReadOnly        : True
    CodePage          : 1252
Following command can be run to change console output encoding to UTF8:
    [Console]::OutputEncoding = [System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8
However, running this on remote session will result in "Exception setting "OutputEncoding": "The handle is invalid." Running this on host works, but has no effect on remote session.
Apparently $OutputEncoding only works for input, not output. But I tried to set it to UTF8 anyway, with no effect.
This problem does not affect PowerShell cmdlets, as Write-Host and Write-Output produce correct output even in remote session.
Previously host had PowerShell 3 and client had PowerShell 2, now both have PowerShell 4 and problem still persists.
Anyone know how I can receive correct output from localized native executables? Thanks in advance.

Actually I am using PS remoting from server to client workstations.
I have provided several examples of commands that produce incorrect characters in place of non-English characters in the first post. Likewise I have provided encoding info in the first post.
As for culture info, info below.
    Get-Culture on host:
    LCID             Name             DisplayName
    1035             fi-FI            Finnish (Finland)
