Non-journaled disk with a .journal file

I am running a virus scan on my internal hard drive and I find three files that cannot be scanned:
.hotfiles.btree
.journal
.journalinfoblock
None of these are current (timestamps ca 2005) and the disk is running with Journaling disabled.
Why can't these be accessed? Could the be viral? Why do the stay on the disk if I am not journaling, should the journal feature delete them if they are not in use?
I am curious because my disk seems to be running constantly, and my computer is running very slowly.
I use a 15" powerbook G4 running at 1.5 GHz

HI Thomas,
There are no known Mac viruses.
One reason for a computer to slow down is insufficient disk space. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Check your hard disk for errors. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your install disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.

  • Can I browse non-local disk with a JFileChooser?

    Hello :)
    Is there any possibility to browse files on other computers with a JFileChooser? Neither API doc nor tutorial say a word about reading from non-local disk.
    I tried it this wayJFileChooser chooser = new JFileChooser();
    try{
    chooser = new JFileChooser(new File(new URI("http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/collections/")));
    // I believe  http: is wrong here,  but what is correct?
    } catch (URISyntaxException mue){
    mue.printStackTrace();
    }and got java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: URI scheme is not "file"

    Only if those non-local disks are mounted to the PC you are using. I'm not aware that Java can actually mount it for you. So either it's a shared or mapped drive in Windows or a mounted drive in Unix. It can't use http because the HTTP protocol doesn't really allow for file browsing, per se. Web servers can serve a directory listing for directories if it's enabled on the server and no default file is in the given directory, but that isn't so much used anymore.

  • How to format my drive unjournaled non journaled no journal

    Ok so I have done a search and can not find a way to format my external drive unjournaled, non journaled, no journal.
    I put all these in to help the next person to search.  Please dont ask why just please help how to?  I read you can hold down
    option and unjournaled will pop up.  It does not.  I'm running 10.8.5 on multiple computers and it does not show up?
    Something missing or do I need to downgrade to 10.6.10?  I miss 10.6 it was awesome.
    Thanks,
    nautigirl

    I am not going to ask why, I am just going to point out that if that disk is ever not properly unmounted (power failure, system crash, the USB/Firewire/Thunderbolt cable gets pulled out, etc...), then the next time you try to mount that drive, the system is going to run /sbin/fsck_hfs against that drive, and if there are a lot of files on the drive it can take hours before the drive mounts.  Journaling avoids that.
    /usr/sbin/diskutil disableJournal /Volumes/externalVolumeName
    If you get permission errors, you will need to prefix the command with 'sudo' (man sudo)

  • Acrobat 3D and Tablet-PC journal file

    I have a Tablet-PC (Toshiba M205-S810) and the Journal program, pen based, creates *.jnt files. I just tried printing a PDF from a *.jnt (journal) file, and the PDF is full of "giberish", ASII characters all over the page.
    I can print a PDF from Journal using "Jaws PDF Creator" with no problem, so I had to re-install the program so I can continue to work.
    Any reason why I can't print a PDF from a *.jnt (journal) file using Acrobat? Any settings that I have to do on Acrobat?
    Thanks for any help on this subject.
    Erich

    Hi Erich,
    Please re-post your question on the Windows Acrobat User-to-User forum. I think you'll get a much quicker answer to your question there. This forum deals specifically with 3D related issues. Even though you have the Acrobat 3D application, the behavior you're describing will probably get much more attention in the other forum.

  • [SOLVED]File journal: what's the recomended journal file size??

    After checking the journaling file
    journalctl --disk-usage
    Journals take up 679.5M on disk
    I have found that i have 680M of journal files, it's a good idea to limit these files to a smaller amount???
    I'm using an 120GB ssd. I was thinking limit those to 50M.
    English is not my native language; please excuse typing errors.

  • Lightroom Journal Files

    Can someone explain to me please what a journal file is and what it's for?
    I was copying some files round the other evening and came across a Lightroom 2 and a Lightroom 3 journal file. They appear to have been in existance for some time, I've just never been aware of them. they aren't causing me any kind of problem and everything is working just fine, I just wondered what they are for.
    Regards
    Phil

    Phil, they appear alongside the lrcat file with a .lock file while Lightroom is in use. The journal file ought not be removed as it contains vital infrmation not yet written to the catalog while in use. Although if there are old ones left behind after crashes, etc ther would be no harm in removing those with Lightroom closed.
    The lock file prevents others accessing the database while it is in use and possibly corrupting it.

  • Journaled file system for startup volume only?

    I have been told that the advantage of a journaled file system is only realized on the startup volume. Surely, protecting the critical startup files is first priority for most users, but does the advantage of a journaled file system apply to other drive volumes, too? Please explain why this is or is not true. Thanks.

    it applies to all drives but it's much less relevant for non startup drives. startup drives are being written to constantly and other drives are not. the likelihood of an external drive being written to at the moment of say a power outage is much smaller than that for the startup drive. therefore having journaling on on nonstartup drives is not as crucial. you can still do it though if you want to.

  • Random zeros in database journal files.

    Hello All,
    I am running with the SUSE 11 on Netra machine(X4270).
    I am seeing periodically generated journal files getting corrupted i.e random zeros are present in the journal files. This corruption is happening after 6th journal file is created, so this is the pattern.
    There are no changes from software or hardware point, i started seeing journal files getting corrupted with zeros all of a sudden.
    Any inputs for this issue will be a great help

    Can I fix a disk with this message?
    Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

    Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
    There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
    If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
    Buy a new Drive. Or  two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
    If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.

  • How can I burn a disk of photos with a modified file name?

    After importing photos from scan device, I use Photos > Batch > Change to rename files.  When burning a disk the changed file names do not transfer with the image but use the original file name.  How can I burn a disk of photos with the modified file name?
    This is what I have done so far with no success.
    Drag selected photos from Event to Burn Folder where the file names were changed. Burn folder lists file with original file name.
    Drag albums to Burn Folder with the same result.
    In Filer I am able to change the iPhoto Library > Master > Date > Filename and then drag to burn disk folder and see the changed name but this is a single file exercise without a view of the file's image, but to use the new file name in iPhoto events I have to repeat the naming convention.

    File > Export.
    In the resulting dialogue note the "Name" section. Choose to use the Title as Filename.

    A MacBook will use Time Machine to make local backups so that when connected to an external drive it will backup a lot faster.
    to disable this, you must use a command under terminal.
    to locate terminal, do a search for it under spotlight (the magnifying glass on the top right corner), should be the first hit.
    once under terminal, type the following text exactly:
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
    hit enter.
    you will be asked to input your password, if you do not have a password, you will have to create one before performing this command. after entering your password, hit enter again and close terminal.
    in a few minutes the space taken up by time machine should be cleared.

  • Working with HD m2ts files to get best video out burned on disk.

    Working with m2ts video files, how to get best video output.  I have Pinnacle 12U and the video picture that is produced on a burned disk is much better then what is produced in Adobe Premieme PRO CS4.  I would like to continue to use Premieme Pro, but unless I can archive at least the same quality of video it would be hard to make the switch.  I must be missing something???  HELP!!

    More input,  the media file output is VTS.VOB format from Adobe and from Pinnacle it is m2ts.  When you stop the playback m2ts is real sharp and the the VOB is not as clear.  During the playback the m2ts disk is so much better than the Adobe VOB format.
    Does anyone know if this is the best format that Adobe can produce?   It's a shame that with the great High Definition picture that you can now get out of a personal movie camera, that Adobe cannot produce the same quality picture out on disk!!

  • Sharing Air Disk with XP and OS X: XP Doesn't Create Files?

    Hello,
    I'm trying to share a USB hard disk with both my Macbook Pro and an XP machine. Both computers can see the drive and access files on it. However, only the Macbook Pro is able to create files. When I drag a directory (folder) to the drive in Windows, it creates all of the (sub)folders but the files do not seem to get copied.
    Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I'm usually pretty good with this sort of thing, but I'm baffled!
    Thanks,
    Aidan

    The only problem is that I tried to do that but when you log into the PC's you have limited access, theres no way i can have admin privileges. is there some way i can get a folder showing up on all those computers? maybe make an smb sharing service on the mac and setting up a shortcut on the windows boxes to the iMacs address?
