Non Mac URL

We have some friends we want to do some basic web design for. Can we publish to a non-.mac url using iWeb?

Publish to folder and upload those files to your server.

  • How to password protect non .mac web site

does anyone have step-by-step directions on how to make my web page password protected on a non .mac web space?
    for example, http://www.yoursite.net/~userid
My internet service provider does not support web page creation, they just provide the space.
The only thing they said was the path to my directory is /rmgrazi/public_html/ and I should create my index.html file inside the public folder. I've tried creating and uploading a .htaccess file in the public folder, and then putting a .htpasswd file in my root directory /rmgrazi/
This doesn't seem to work. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your help -- I'm not an expert by any means -- this is my first website... just wanting to put up a family website to share with friends & people I know.
    OK, the url is http://www.hickorytech.net/~rmgrazi/
Right now I just have a blank page up that says "test website"
My .htaccess file is located in /rmgrazi/public_html/ (yes, I put it inside the public folder in order to password protect my whole site).
By the way I'm using TextEdit in OS X, so when I upload the original file with Fetch, it looks like htaccess.txt -- after it's uploaded (as text, not binary of course) then I simply change the name to .htaccess
My .htaccess file includes the following:
    AuthUserFile /rmgrazi/.htpasswd
    AuthName Members Area
    AuthType Basic
    Require valid-user
Then I uploaded the .htpasswd one level up to /rmgrazi/ like it says in .htaccess.
The text in this file is just one line with my username:password (the password is written in code). I found a website that does this automatically. Then I just cut & paste it in apple+v
I tried using the Terminal application in OS X panther to see if the server path needs to be longer -- I logged into my ftp.hickorytech.net and entered "pwd" -- that command is supposed to show the server path. /rmgrazi/public_html/ are the only folders I can see. "/" is as far back as it will show.
In Fetch I can change the permissions for .htaccess and .htpasswd by clicking Get Info -- I tried all different combinations, 644, 711, etc... Maybe my permissions are set wrong?

  • Using iWeb to publish to a non.mac domain

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a domain that is not .mac?
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?

Can I use iweb to develop a web site and publish to a
    domain that is not .mac?
Yes, you can. But not directly from iWeb. You will develop your pages in iWeb but the choose the "Publish to Folder" option. This will put all the files necessary for your website in a folder on your hard drive. You will then need to use an FTP program to upload the site files to your 3rd party web host.
Or can I host a non.mac domain on .mac?
Yes, you can also do this. You can do your pages in iWeb and then "Publish to .Mac". Then you can use "Domain Forwarding" available from your registrar or some other redirecting html to forward people who type in your domain name to you .Mac iWeb URL.
Either method will work fine. You will lose out on .Mac specific features (like slideshows, counters, passwords, comments, search) if you host your pages on a 3rd party web host. Also you lose the ability to do incremental uploads (uploading only changed pages) directly from iWeb if you're not using .Mac.
Good luck to you. If this has been useful information to you, please do me a favor and click the "solved" or "helpful" buttons in the title bar of this reply. Thanks.

  • What are slideshows like using 08 on "non-.Mac" sites?

Publishing to a straight URL here. Does 08 give a better slideshow on "non-.Mac" sites? 1.1.2 site were funky white and non-animated. Don't want to upgrade unless this is a sure thing. Thanks.

  • Xcode updates not caching in Caching Server - non-whitelisted url denied.

I am running OS X Server 2.2.1 - Build 169.  (Mountain Lion).  I have the caching service enabled and it appears to have been working successfully - as I can see that updates from Apple are coming from my server when applied to multiple Macs.
There is a new update to XCode 4.6.3 that I have been applying to my Macs - and I am noticing that it is re-downloading from Apple each time - instead of using the cache.
If I look at the Caching Service log - I see an error for each time that I have applied the 4.6.3 update:

Is this a problem with the caching server - or are Apple's developer tools intentionally not being cached?  The log does not tell me what url is being requested.

I have this exact problem too. Interestingly, I have this on my Mini server, then I've setup a caching server on my MacBook Pro and its the same. This log is from my MacBook Pro, its called badgerbookpro.local but its the same on the Mini server. Both are runing 10.8.3

  • Mac Pro '09, non-Mac graphics card. No display after Security Update.

I'm not that knowledgable about this but here's what I know:
    - GTX 660 won't work after the update. The displays stay asleep.
    - The OEM graphics card works. ATI Radeon 4870(?)
    - Nvidia web driver is disabled. Apparently not compatible. Uninstalled.
    - Latest Nvidia web driver won't install. Not compatible with Yosemite.
    - GT 640 won't work either.
I think I'll live with the OEM card for now and wait for a driver update.
What concerns me is that the non-Mac cards won't work at all. They used to work without the native Yosemite drivers.
Anyone have insight to share on this? Thanks.

Apple don't support fitting third-party video cards to the classic Mac Pro. As such Apple do not take a lot of consideration to the effects of their software changes. Nvidia are still providing updated drivers to support newer video cards in the classic Mac Pro, however it is a constant game of cat and mouse between them and Apple.
Recently Nvidia issued an update to support Yosemite 10.10.2 only for Apple to issue Security Update 2015-002 which broke the Nvidia driver. Nvidia then issued another newer version of their driver which fixed that compatibility issue. Guess what, last night Apple released another Security Update 2015-003 which has broken the Nvidia driver yet again. I am sure soon enough there will be an official updated driver from Nvidia to fix this.
I believe the current latest and broken again Nvidia version is http://www.nvidia.com/content/DriverDownload-March2009/confirmation.php?url=/Mac /Quadro_Certified/343.02.02f03/WebDriver…
See this thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1853748&page=4 for discussion about this and how to manually 'fix' your Nvidia driver.
(One hopes Nvidia get the message and make their driver more robust in terms of handling different build numbers of OS X.)

  • Is there any way to have a non-Mac user just LOOK at an ical calendar?

Publish used to work, but the new SHARE doesn't seem to - at least not for doing what I want it to do. If a non-Mac user doesn't even HAVE a calendar on their computer, how can they look at one of mine?

Yes, I have been able share multiple calendars with people on a single account... including Gmail and Yahoo. However, I have only had limited success sharing with Hotmail users. So far, I can only get them to import a static ICS file that you have exported and sent to them. If they try to subscribe to the published link, then they get the following error:
"You're not able to subscribe to calendars that start with "https://". You may be successful if you retype the URL so that it starts with "http://" and then try subscribing to it again."
It's definitely not as simple as it used to be with the old ical program where you could simply publish a calendar group. Now, if you want multiple calendars published and subscribed to you, you have to do one at a time. It's such a bummer
I publish individual work schedules that often change... so having employees constantly import the ICS file DOES create more work. I have yet to find a solution to the Hotmail issue... Does anyone have any experience with getting Hotmail to subscribe?
I can give you the intimate details on how to accomplish subscribing to Yahoo and Google... is there something else you have in mind to sync with? Please note that Microsoft Outlook will accept your invite if it's version 2007 or 2010. Earlier versions do not work.
    Cheers!

  • RSS button on non mac server

    Greetings,
Very new at this. I want to install an RSS button on my blog. The mac button doesn't work on Yahoo. Any suggestion?
Any reaction as well regarding the Technorati button?
    Counting button?
    Many thanks.

I'm not sure why you are saying that the RSS subscribe button isn't working at Yahoo. This is most likely due to the fact that you entered the incorrect host address in the "Publish to Folder" dialog window.
For example...if your hosting account is accessed by typing in http://www.yourdomain.com then you must type this into the URL box of the "Publish to Folder" dialog window. Then when you upload to your host, you must upload the two items that iWeb puts into the folder....
    My Folder
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
Don't upload the enclosing folder (My Folder)....just upload the index.html file and the mysite folder, so that your server directory structure looks like...
    http://www.mydomain.com
    \__ index.html
    \__ mysite folder
It is important to keep the relationship between the index.html file and the mysite folder intact as published by iWeb....otherwise your RSS feed URL will not work.
On a non-.Mac button, the RSS feed and Podcast subscribe buttons should work fine. The Apple counter does not work on non-.Mac servers. You will have to look into other services like http://www.statcounter.com for that.

  • Publishing to a non Mac friendly server + network

I am sure this has been asked countless times - feel free to point me to the correct discussion forum-, I am having trouble publishing my Iweb site in to a non .Mac server. Any ideas?

In the past 24 hours I was able to publish my domain
to the folder with the URL I was given. The webmaster
is asking me which of the files uploaded is the one
that links to the webpage. Clearly I am missing
something when using Iweb with a non .Mac server. Any
    tips and ideas?
When you "publish to a folder" from iWeb you should get a folder on your hard drive which has the same name as your site does inside iWeb, plus an index.html file. You then use ftp to upload these two items only to your server space run by your webmaster. Is that what you did? If not, what did you do? I don't understand what you mean when you say "published my domain to the folder with the URL I was given."
Did you read the link provided earlier? Do you have questions about it?
What server are you using, and what ftp program? What is your url supposed to be?

  • Non .mac host - file querey/disaster!!!

I have a non mac host for my web site which I had successfully uploaded Captain FTP (it was completely fine) but when I tried to update the site with Cyberduck it seemed to be working (ie it appeared I had a connection and files were uploading) but then didnt update properly so I started to fiddle... a bad mistake as I really dont know what I am doing.
I deleted all the files on the domain site. They were my web pages, index and a couple of others bin.cgi (?)from memory and another one. I assumed they were all to do with the old web site and then I uploaded the iweb published folder (which works well when I view it locally) and the index file. They seem to upload properly and the ftp client says its connected to my domain but I just get an error when I try to view the page with a browser
    <<Not Found
<<The requested URL / was not found on this server.
<<Apache/2.0.46 (Red Hat) Server at www.movingmoments.com.au Port 80
I am also unable to view my control panel (manager) at the hosting site.
Usually I am prompted for a password when I type
my domain/host(name) into the browser address.
    domain is
    http://www.movingmoments.com.au
Thanks for any help. Its late here and the hosting company is not available for help until morning and this is urgent...
Hmm. That will teach me for fiddling.
    Leanne

Thanks for that. I figured that must be the case.
I have been playing around with it for a few hours in the vain hope that I would stumble across a solution but I guess I'll just have to give up and wait until the morning...Its 2:30 am so I suppose its time to get to bed.
    Cheers,
    Leanne
Thanks for your help pages by the way!

  • Imac no longer "sees" shared non-Mac devices on network

    Hi everyone,
Here's a real puzzler (for me anyway). I have three Macs, two PCs and an Escient digital jukebox on the home network over standard router-based ethernet connections. The system has worked great especially since Leopard came out and automatically detected the non-Mac devices and added them to the shared category on Finder. Suddenly in the last couple of days I noticed that although the Mac devices are still on the shared network, the PC hard drives and the Escient jukebox has mysteriously disappeared. All of the devices work properly, and I have made no changes in my network recently.
Any thoughts on diagnosing the lost shared devices and restoring them? I tried Time Machine, but it acted also as if those devices never existed. Thanks for your help!

Hmm yes.. this is a strange one.
You could try this as it appears to work with a couple of tests I ran.
Open your Network Preferences pane from  > System Preferences.
    Make a new location.
For which ever interface you are using, be it Wired (Built In Ethernet) or Wireless (AirPort), click the "Advanced" Button. Click on "WINS" and enter the workgroup name of your other Windows Devices (Default is usually WORKGROUP) into the Workgroup drop down menu.
You can also use the menu to see if your mac can see any other workgroups.
Click OK, Click apply and see if it worked.

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

  • Mac won't open non-Mac software

I turned on my desktop Mac this morning and none of my non-Mac applications (Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, InDesign, Cyberduck, etc.) would open. The Mac applications -  Mail, iChat, Preview - work normally, but not Safari. I re-started the computer several times and they still won't open. The icons bounced up and down for a long time, then stayed still but the light under the icon that indicates the application is open was not on.  When I opened the "Force Quit Applications" window to force quit the applications, some of them (Photoshop and InDesign) showed as open, while the others (Microsoft Office and Internet browsers) showed as "not responding". I don't know what is happening - everything was fine when I last used the computer.
So far, I have tried repairing the permissions using Disk Utilities, which did not help.  Any idea on how to fix this will be very much appreciated.

Thank you, sanjampet and a brody. I reset the SMC but it didn't work. And I don't have Mackeeper. I also tried resetting the PRAM and did a few other things (throwing out preferences, etc.) but none worked. At the end, I decided to re-install the operating system using OS X Internet Recovery. It took about 7 hours but it solved the problems!  After re-installation, I was able to open all non-Apple applications without any problems. In fact, they seem to open a little faster than before. I wonder if the re-installed OS came with patches that fixed the problems. It did ask to download a java script when I opened InDesign.
@a brody; thanks for setting me straight about Apple vs. Mac. I was pretty distraught yesterday (lost a full day of important designing work) and wasn't thinking clearly ...
