Non-Printing Background?

I've got a form I've designed in InDesign and exported to Acrobat. For spice I have a background color. But, some users are going to have to fax this. Because of this I'd like the background color to be non-printing. Is there a way to do this?

You can try the "Form Fields Only" option in your print dialog box. Also, there are instructions for making a non-printing background. It helped me!!

  • Making a form with a non printing background

I need to make a form for an overprint on a 4-up postcard sheet. The postcard is preprinted, but I want to show it in the PDF form so that the user knows where the data is going to be when they print out the form. So basically I need everything but the form data to be non printing. I tried looking for something like this in the Help but I don't know what keywords to use to look for this. Is it possible?
    I have Acrobat Pro 8.

You could use the background option to import the comp and then fade
back using the opacity level - this would then provide a background
which (if configured) would show inside the PDF but not print ..

  • Non Printing Template Background

    Hello,
I have a pdf form that I wish to use as a template. The problem is that the form is already printed and all I want to print is the field data, omitting the background template from printing over the form. How can I do this?
It seems as though there is no control over the template.
Any help is much appreciated...Tom Fullen

  • Non printing buttons in interactive pdfs

In InDesign CS4 I was able to set buttons and their backgrounds as non-printing. In CS5 with the new interactive option this does not seem to be available.
I would like to be able to post interactive presentations that can be viewed on screen but when printed out do not show any navigation.
    Any help please.

  • Text not printing or PDFing. Non-printing is not applied. Help?

I have a logo. The top is on a path applied to an oval. Same with the bottom. In the middle is an ampersand (&). When I try to print, only the ampersand prints. I've tried printing to 2 different machines. I also tried saving it as a PDF but I lose everything except the ampersand in the middle. Everything is colored black, so there are no weird colors going on. Non-printing is not applied to anything. Any thoughts? I can send the file to somebody if they want to check it out.

    Thanks,

Sorry for the delay. Spent some time looking for the font becasue I'm on Windows.
I opened it first in CS5, and after font substitution it exported fine, so I figured maybe it was a font problem on your end, but just to be safe I opened it in CS3 to check. Same problem here that you have on your end.
Good news, though. I exported to .inx and opened that. That page opened at 11 inches high, which may be part of the problem, but after resizing, it exported correctly. This is a pretty good inidcator of some minor corruption that is fixable by the export. See Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • Why is my page set up drop down different from your illustration in help for printing background

    ''duplicate - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/830795''
The page set up drop down menu looks nothing like the illustration in help. It does not include a box to check for "print background. How do I print background

first, does it sound like I set it up correctly from what I wrote?
    Yes, all sounds correct.
Second, I heard that adding a b/g AX to the network will slow everything down to b/g speeds but I have also read that simply using B/G AX's to add speakers by joining the network will not slow down the N network....which is it?
The b/g AX devices will not slow down the network unless they are actively streaming AirTunes. Even then, audio streaming does not require a great deal of bandwidth, so for the most part, the effect would be negligible. Don't worry about it.
Is my network slowed down to b/g speeds because of my speaker set up or not?
The speed on your network will depend on a number of factors..are you downloading something while copying something else? Are you simply browsing? How far is the computer from the closest wireless access point?
You can check your current available bandwidth on your local network by doing the following:
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the Transmit Rate number.
    "g" wireless = 54 Mbps
    What do you see?
Oh, and by the way, I don't know if this matters, but while the time capsule serves as the main base station, it is in bridge mode because it is plugged into a 2wire gateway router.
If the Time Capsule is in bridge mode, it cannot act as the main base station. If you want, you could think of it that way if you are using the wireless on the Time Capsule as your preferred network, but the Time Capsule is not the "main" router.

  • Exporting a PDF so that non-printing objects show but don't print?

I've just spent a couple hours trying to find an answer to this in the forums, but can't. (The most frustrating was one thread where the original poster said, "I found the answer here," and gave a link that went right back to the main page of the forum. Argh.)
Okay, anyway ... what I need to do?
I've got a document with graphics that I want to show up on the pdf when I export it, but that--if a reader prints it--don't print.
The document looks like a 3-ring binder with "tabs" for each section--just like the real thing. But the rings and tabs go right up to the edge and look terrible when printed, and whose printer can print right at the edge of the paper, anyway? But the tabs work as navigational links while looking a the pdf, and the rings just make it look cool, so I WANT them in the pdf.
    I've tried:
Turning the entire layer into a non-printing layer (one that "shows" but does not "print"). But when I export it to a pdf, it doesn't show up on the pdf to look at OR to print. So that doesn't work.
Using the Attribute option to turn each object into a non-printing object, but so far as I can tell, that doesn't do a thing, because they still print from the pdf.
Exporting with the "create pdf layers" turned on and off. Exporting with the "include non-printing items" turned on and off.
Basically, I've pretty much tried everything. I gather, from browsing the forums, that this is POSSIBLE, but can't for the life of me figure out what to do to make it happen. (Short of hiding the tabs' layer and creating an entirely separate PDF and calling it "Print version" which is not exactly what I want to do!)
Is there maybe some magical combination of ons and offs I need to select to make this whole thing work?
(And, seriously, am I the only person who thinks the supporting documentation is just dreadful? I can't find anything in any of the Help screens that even mentions this, much less explains how to do it.)
    Any help is appreciated!!

    Partial progress...
The button option (and, I'm using CS3, by the way--I should have said that originally) does work in terms of showing on the pdf but not printing.
The problem is that it messes up the way the document looks.
I said it's designed to look like a 3-ring binder with tab-dividers between each section, and each tab has a hyperlink to take you to that section.
Now, when you've got a paper binder in front of you, the tabs stay in the same sequence, and often overlap a bit (which mine do). The problem I'm having, having turned all of them into buttons, is that when you click on any of them, it "jumps" to the front of the row, so that they don't "flow" in the correct sequence.
Am I explaining this well? You know, the top-most tab is at the top of the pile, the next one is always below it and above the third one, and so on ... you never see the second tab on TOP of the first one. I'm trying to get the document to act as close to a hard-copy binder as I can, and it did ... except the buttons keep jostling each other for attention...
I'm going to go play around with this some more now, but ... any suggestions? (Other than restructuring my tabs so that they don't overlap at all?)

  • Recent InDesign change suppresses non-printing layers when exporting to EPUB

I hate it when development teams quiety "fix" features I've come to rely on.
I am using InDesign CC 9.2.
Until a recent update, when I exported a book to EPUB from InDesign, layers which were set to show but not print were included in the export. I relied on this because my documents include a non-printed Table of Contents block on the first page of each piece included in the anthology. This block causes the correct page to be set when generating the TOC (notice that it's on the page facing the title, not the title page itself) and is used to print the correct title on the title page of each story and running headers throughout the body.
(An example document - Click for full size)
Up to at least January 2014, when I exported to EPUB, that visible-but-not-printed block was included in the XHTML output. I could then modify CSS to optimize for e-reader display and the title and author names would appear at the top of each piece. Sometime within the past couple of months, that has changed: layers that are not printed also do not export to EPUB. This wouldn't be so big a problem except that the printed title in the image above also is not output to the EPUB file, because it's a text variable in the underlying master page.
If you like reading and messing with markup, as I do, the next two images illustrate the problem.
(The old output - Click for full size)
    The new output:
(The new output - Click for full size)
I have five volumes of the anthology so far (comprising roughly 30 stories each) with a new one coming out every three months. Now that this change has been thrown at me, I need to get it resolved or come up with a good workaround while I only have a couple hundred documents to update, instead of double that a year from now.
Thank you for any help or suggestions you can provide!

Going back through every document to override Master Page objects just to get the elements to export is not a realistic workaround.
The change that suppresses visible but non-printing objects is annoying, but at least it's a documented change in 9.2. The change that suppresses all Master Page elements as well is not documented (or at least not documented in an obvious way) and so to me it's a bug.
Ideally, if these new changes are required by some users, the old behavior could at least become an option: the export to EPUB dialog could add checkboxes for "Include non-printing objects" and/or "Include Master Page elements" so that users like me are not left with no way to continue to use existing functionality.

  • Firefox 5 not printing background (colors and images) despit it's selection in Page Setup. Previous version worked fine.

I upgraded to FireFox 5, but it is not printing background (images and colors) for certain pages which previously printed fine with my earlier version. Print Preview DOES shows the background images, but when sent to printer or PDF, background images do not appear in the printed output.

I wish it were that but a long time ago when I had a problem with the gadgets with iGoogle back 6 months ago thereabouts I was asked to disable it then and I did and I just went to re-check and it is still not enabled, however, it will not let me un-install it though.. It only gives me an option to enable or disable.. Any advice ? So I'm wondering if it is something else still or is there a problem with the avast still ?

  • Safari 5 won't print backgrounds

So I'm trying to print from Safari 5, and even though I have "Print Backgrounds" checked in the print dialog, I cannot get background no matter what. In fact, on some pages, the layout is ganked — especially horizontal nav menus printing as plain-text, vertical, bullet-point lists.
Anybody have any insights or solutions to this? Is there a fix on the way? Did Apple just to horrible QA?

I understand ya, it is also your web page and you should be able to view it using any font and colors you like. You can actually do this.
User friendly is more often than not about adding every single possibility as a button, this has always been the Apple (S. Jobs) philosophy, remove as much as possible, because if you do what is left is the core of easy-to-use.
If you do add buttons and options for every possible use because if you do add buttons for every single little use case you soon end up with something like this: http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Shots/BRUMainScreen.gif
I do argue that it is the job of the web developer to make sure that colors and layout is as good as possible. If you need expert level control over the web page you can do the following:
First option: Open Safari preferences, go to advanced options, check to show the developer menu.
Now you can inspect the web page and delete any CSS files that have media="print"
That should allow you to print the webpage however it looks. You now have 100% control of the local (your Mac) web page content, looks, layout, color, images and even behaviour.
If you are unsuccessful with the above option, try this second option: Open Safari preferences, go to advanced options, check to show the developer menu.
Save the web page and open the CSS files in your favorite editor and remove any @media print and media="print" rules and files and you should be all set.
Option three: Open Safari preferences, go to advanced options, select a custom CSS file that you have created containing rules that override the web pages' rules for print styles.
There you go, three ways to solve your dilemma. Hope it works out for you.

  • My screen background color is off-white & this color comes through on the print page. Page Setup/Print Background is set off. How do I fix this? Problem first popped up with version 6, still there with version 8.0.1

    File/Page Setup/Format & Options/Options/Print Background (colors & images): Check box set off.
This setting does not work as my screen background color still comes through on the print preview & the print page.
Is this because the newer Firefox versions have blocked my graphics driver version?

See [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683139 Bug 683139] – Using the 'High Contrast Black' 'Accessibility Option' in Win XP results in the screen colours being printed.

  • Non printing items still printing

    Hi.
I have created in Indesign a 8 page pdf with hyperlinks (as a nav bar on each page)
I have set the colourful headers and footers on each page as non printing.
I am trying to create a PDF that will be colourful on screen, but when the browser goes to print it out the headers and footers will not output.
trouble is, they are still printing
I have tried exporting as smallest file/ high quality print and non printing options are ticked (otherwise the headers dont appear at all on screen)
can this be done? if so, how?
I have attached a sample file it has two objects in it:
    1) some text
    2) a magenta rectangle place over the text
I am trying to acheive a pint rectangle on screen, and when the pdf is printed, no rectangle just text.

You can't add a hyperlink to a button - but you can Convert something to a button and then give it a URL to go to when clicked.
Basically you don't select the button and choose a hyperlink destionation the way you would with text, that won't work.
    Here's what to do.
Select the frame that will be the button.
    Go to Window>Interactive>States
In the fly menu for the States panel (top right of panel) click the arrow pointing down, and a sub menu pops out.
Go to Button Options and to the tab that says "Behaviors"
    Event: Mouse Down
    Behavior: Go to URL
    URL: (insert the url)
And then DON'T FORGET TO CLICK ADD at the bottom of the dialog box.
And that's it. When you make the pdf make sure you inlcude interactive and bookmarks and everything else you need.

  • Marking text as non-printing

I read that in ID CS4 it's possible to mark text as non-printing (while still including it in a TOC). However, I can't find where this command is ...
    Can anyone help?

What I'm trying to do is this.
My (inherited) ID CS4 document has 5 chapters. On each chapter title page, there are two separate header styles (with very different formatting). One says, for instance, 'Chapter 1' and the other provides a description, such as: 'Managing Applications'
I want the TOC to show: 'Chapter 1: Managing Applications'.
If I tell the TOC to pull in both styles, I get (on two lines):
    Chapter 1
         Managing Applicaitons               7
My thought, based on Sandee Cohen's text, was to insert a second 'Chapter 1' in front of the 'Managing Applications' and mark the former as hidden. But ID can't do this...
Is it possible to put the second 'Chapter 1' on a second hidden layer, inside the same frame?
Even if you can do this, it probably isn't worth the effort in this instance. But I'd just like to know for future reference.

  • Caesar Cipher and non printing ascii

I am writing a program to implements the caesar cipher. For the program I am using ASCII code so my encryption algorithm is:
    c = (p + k) mod 128
The only problem is, is that depending on the characters being encrypted and depending on the key I use some of the characters are encrypted to non-printing ascii characters such as 'del'.
So my code reads in the plain text from a file converts each character to ascii, encrypts each character using the key. It then writes the encrypted ascii values to a file as text (i.e. the character equivalent of the ascii).
If I do then encounter a non-printing ascii value it is written to the file as a square shape. Is there any way I can get around this?
Thanks for your help on the matter.
    Wallace

Modify your encryption function so that it only covers those ASCII values that print, i.e. you need to implement the mod and + function yourself so that only good ASCII characters are considered.
