Non-Printing File

Okay, for starters, I think this is probably not explicitly an InDesign issue.
I have a template I use in InDesign, and every time I try to print it to our color machine (Konica-Minolta bizhub Pro C5500/EFI Fiery Print Server),
It processes in the queue, and never actually prints. I have set defaults in both the InDesign print dialog, and the machine-specific dialog to no avail.
It has done this since CS3, that I am aware of, I have CS5 now.
I know I may not get a specific answer, but help in the general direction at least is greatly appreciated.

  • Text not printing or PDFing. Non-printing is not applied. Help?

I have a logo. The top is on a path applied to an oval. Same with the bottom. In the middle is an ampersand (&). When I try to print, only the ampersand prints. I've tried printing to 2 different machines. I also tried saving it as a PDF but I lose everything except the ampersand in the middle. Everything is colored black, so there are no weird colors going on. Non-printing is not applied to anything. Any thoughts? I can send the file to somebody if they want to check it out.

    Thanks,

Sorry for the delay. Spent some time looking for the font becasue I'm on Windows.
I opened it first in CS5, and after font substitution it exported fine, so I figured maybe it was a font problem on your end, but just to be safe I opened it in CS3 to check. Same problem here that you have on your end.
Good news, though. I exported to .inx and opened that. That page opened at 11 inches high, which may be part of the problem, but after resizing, it exported correctly. This is a pretty good inidcator of some minor corruption that is fixable by the export. See Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • Recent InDesign change suppresses non-printing layers when exporting to EPUB

I hate it when development teams quiety "fix" features I've come to rely on.
I am using InDesign CC 9.2.
Until a recent update, when I exported a book to EPUB from InDesign, layers which were set to show but not print were included in the export. I relied on this because my documents include a non-printed Table of Contents block on the first page of each piece included in the anthology. This block causes the correct page to be set when generating the TOC (notice that it's on the page facing the title, not the title page itself) and is used to print the correct title on the title page of each story and running headers throughout the body.
(An example document - Click for full size)
Up to at least January 2014, when I exported to EPUB, that visible-but-not-printed block was included in the XHTML output. I could then modify CSS to optimize for e-reader display and the title and author names would appear at the top of each piece. Sometime within the past couple of months, that has changed: layers that are not printed also do not export to EPUB. This wouldn't be so big a problem except that the printed title in the image above also is not output to the EPUB file, because it's a text variable in the underlying master page.
If you like reading and messing with markup, as I do, the next two images illustrate the problem.
(The old output - Click for full size)
    The new output:
(The new output - Click for full size)
I have five volumes of the anthology so far (comprising roughly 30 stories each) with a new one coming out every three months. Now that this change has been thrown at me, I need to get it resolved or come up with a good workaround while I only have a couple hundred documents to update, instead of double that a year from now.
Thank you for any help or suggestions you can provide!

Going back through every document to override Master Page objects just to get the elements to export is not a realistic workaround.
The change that suppresses visible but non-printing objects is annoying, but at least it's a documented change in 9.2. The change that suppresses all Master Page elements as well is not documented (or at least not documented in an obvious way) and so to me it's a bug.
Ideally, if these new changes are required by some users, the old behavior could at least become an option: the export to EPUB dialog could add checkboxes for "Include non-printing objects" and/or "Include Master Page elements" so that users like me are not left with no way to continue to use existing functionality.

  • Non printing items still printing

    Hi.
I have created in Indesign a 8 page pdf with hyperlinks (as a nav bar on each page)
I have set the colourful headers and footers on each page as non printing.
I am trying to create a PDF that will be colourful on screen, but when the browser goes to print it out the headers and footers will not output.
trouble is, they are still printing
I have tried exporting as smallest file/ high quality print and non printing options are ticked (otherwise the headers dont appear at all on screen)
can this be done? if so, how?
I have attached a sample file it has two objects in it:
    1) some text
    2) a magenta rectangle place over the text
I am trying to acheive a pint rectangle on screen, and when the pdf is printed, no rectangle just text.

You can't add a hyperlink to a button - but you can Convert something to a button and then give it a URL to go to when clicked.
Basically you don't select the button and choose a hyperlink destionation the way you would with text, that won't work.
    Here's what to do.
Select the frame that will be the button.
    Go to Window>Interactive>States
In the fly menu for the States panel (top right of panel) click the arrow pointing down, and a sub menu pops out.
Go to Button Options and to the tab that says "Behaviors"
    Event: Mouse Down
    Behavior: Go to URL
    URL: (insert the url)
And then DON'T FORGET TO CLICK ADD at the bottom of the dialog box.
And that's it. When you make the pdf make sure you inlcude interactive and bookmarks and everything else you need.

  • Caesar Cipher and non printing ascii

I am writing a program to implements the caesar cipher. For the program I am using ASCII code so my encryption algorithm is:
    c = (p + k) mod 128
The only problem is, is that depending on the characters being encrypted and depending on the key I use some of the characters are encrypted to non-printing ascii characters such as 'del'.
So my code reads in the plain text from a file converts each character to ascii, encrypts each character using the key. It then writes the encrypted ascii values to a file as text (i.e. the character equivalent of the ascii).
If I do then encounter a non-printing ascii value it is written to the file as a square shape. Is there any way I can get around this?
Thanks for your help on the matter.
    Wallace

Modify your encryption function so that it only covers those ASCII values that print, i.e. you need to implement the mod and + function yourself so that only good ASCII characters are considered.

  • What is this non-printing character? (¤)

    The generic currency symbol
    (¤)
shows up often as a non-printing character in a document I'm editing, mostly inside table cells where I'd expect paragraph symbols to be.  I can't find any information anywhere, and now I'm curious.  Does anybody know what this means?

    Hi,
As far as I know, the non printing character is much easier to understand spacing when the characters are displayed. You can quickly tell, for instance, when you have inserted two spaces between words or added an extra carriage return. This allows you to
more accurately control the look of your document and what it contains.
In tables you will see one additional character, the universal monetary  symbol (¤), which displays variously at various point sizes and magnifications  but upon close inspection is seen to be a circle with four lines radiating from  the corners
We may show/hide the non-printing character. (File> Word Options>Display>Check/Uncheck Show These Formatting Marks )

  • Hiding non printing characters

I have migrated character mode report from 2.5 to 10g and mapped the o/p to open in textpad using orarrp.
But i am getting non printing characters in the o/p when viewed in any editor but in print out they won't appear.
So how to hide this non printing characters.
The characters are like "square box" followed by "g","square box" followed by "m","square box" followed by "p"
This is the prt file which i am using
    printer "wide"
    height 72
    width 132
    code "01" esc 15
    code "18" 18
    code "10" esc 80
    code "12" esc 77
    code "15" esc "g"
    after page control(L)
    return control(M)
    linefeed control(J)
    pls help

    so use the Document
pattern it after the FixedLengthDocument in the tutorial
store the real string in the extended document class
when the user types an invalid character, it is not added to the text pane.
there is a getText method in the Document (i think)
have it return the real string with all the characters
when the user types in the textPane, it will be added to the string in your
document class but will not be seen in the text area because you have
    filtered it.
I think you can figure it out. I haven't tested this exact theory but have done
    something similar

  • Non printing characters

    Hi,
I was cutting and pasting code from a post
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=54&threadID=766671
To have some fun and see if I could get it to work.
Had some trouble at first, got some advice and eventually got it to work.
When I pasted it into TextEdit (standard text editor on my mac) and tried to compile,
I ended up with100 errors per file. Somewhere along the line I figured
that the editor was formatting things wrong or including non printing characters
of some type and screwing up the system. So I downloaded JEdit cut and
    pasted and everything worked fine.
so, my question is this: Can someone explain this stuation or point me to a resource
of information on editors and how they work and what to look out for.
I'm just starting the learning process...seems like there is a lot I need to learn.
    Thanks Bill

So something else must have been a problem. But
without any error messages or other details, I
couldn't possibly tell what. After I read your reply I thought; maybe I did screw up somewhere else, so
I did the copy and pasting again to try and reproduce the errors.
I copied from the forum and pasted into TextEdit.
    Saved as plain text (UTF-16)
I tried to compile and got the following results.
Since I pasted into JEdit and everyrthing compiled
I figuered the problem had to do with editor, or formatting.

  • "Non-printing" items in AW Draw

I'm converting some PageMaker files into AW Drawing documents but have one sticking point. In PM, I could designate an item (text or image) as non-printing so it would be displayed on monitor but would not print. Is there a way to do this in AW? For example, I print name, team & date on award certificates. I want to put paper loading instructions (face down, head toward monitor) on the screen with the name & etc but, obviously don't want that on the finished certificate. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid there is no way of doing this that I can see. The only suggestion I can offer is that you put the instructions as a single draw object in front of the document, and make sure to delete it before printing. (Create a filled rectangle in a light colour with a line round the edge: put a text frame over it and type instructions in it, including 'delete this before printing', then group the two. You could lock the rest of the document so it can't be deleted by accident.)

  • New Epson WF 7620 will not print with Macbook Air, receive "Print File Was Not Accepted" message.

Hello! To anyone who tries to help me, thank you in advance!
I brought home a new Epson WF 7620 yesterday and did all the necessary stuff, installing it with my Macbook Air (Mac OS X ; 10.7.4.). I installed the software from the site, added the printer to my printer list, enabled "print sharing" and connected it to my wifi network. I am trying to use it wirelessly.
I tried to print a test page of a regular PNG image, but I am receiving the "Print File Was Not Accepted" message in my printer queue. I have changed the file type a couple times to JPG and PDF but more of the same. I have also reset the printer, and have repaired the disk permissions in the Disk Utility to try and get it to work.
None of this seems to be working, suggestions very appreciated!
    Thanks
    MP

Try Linc's suggestion first.  That should cure your issue.  If not, here's something else to consider:

Apple keeps a set of current software for Epson printers.  You should start by going to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and delete the printer from the list (using the "-" key).  Then download Apple's software version from here:
Epson Printer Drivers v2.18 for OS X
Finally, set up the printer as shown here:

I noticed that you said you uninstalled the printer, but you didn't mention resetting the print system.  Resetting the print system will reset the drivers the Mac has installed and make them work like they should.  Give this a try and see if it gets the printer working like it should.  The document below will expalin more about doing this.
Basic Printer Troubleshooting Steps for Mac
If that doesn't help, see if you are using the AirPrint driver, or the printers driver.  By default 10.8 uses the AirPrint driver if the printer supports it, so I'm betting that's the driver you're using.  If it is, try using the driver for the printer itself.  To do this, access Print and Scan.  Click the + sign to add a new printer.  Select the printer from the list.  Click the dropdown next to Use and select the 7515's driver.  Let me know what happens.

  • PS cs3 generating corrupted(?) print files

I upgraded to cs3 recently. On screen images look fine. I calibrate with a Spider. I'm running OSX 10.4.11
My problem is ...a recent print job printed VERY green, very little red and whole areas of red seem almost masked out!
Next, I send a print ready JPG file to a client and he says it gave him a Photoshop dialogue " Unsupported color mode". It did allow him to open and "fix" the file, but now I'm starting to think something on my end is corrupted or a setting is WAYYYYYY OFFFF.
I've double and triple checked my settings ...and I can't find the issue.
    Maximize compatibility is "ON".
    It's not a layered TIFF.
I've deleted my PS preference file.
I've search the 'net for any reference to the issue - none.
    Anybody have any ideas?
Thx in advance for your thoughts.

Here's what the client wrote ...
"Attached is screen shot of both styles showing missing/white text under top left photo (Nutrients) - but I was able to correct...
I opened in Photoshop and it says the file uses an unsupported color mode (not sure why?). I then click convert - and the top green is no longer bright - but a more dark green (which I like) AND now the missing text appears too.
I re-sized and saved as a jpeg, and the colors look normal. "
The client included a screen shot of the BEFORE and AFTER. I can't include it here because of an NDA, but believe me it looks sort of  "RGB" with missing text (maybe white text on white) and AFTER - it looks like it did on my screen.
Freaky huh! And the worst part is I don't have much choice but to keep putting out print files that may have some corruption or twisted-embedded color profile!

  • Non-printing text frame for use in exported pdf

    Hi everyone,
I have a couple of words in a text frame and I've set the text frame to be be non-printing in the attributes panel. I was hoping that by doing this, that when I exported to pd, it would show in the pdf file but not print, but as it happens it doesn't show at all in the pdf.
Is there a way to mark a text frame as non-printing in Indesign but still have it show in the pdf and not print in the pdf?
Would be grateful for any advice.

It might work to put it on it's own layer, mark the layer as non-printing, so it won't print from ID, but export a layered PDF (you might have to include non-printing layers to get it inthe PDF, but I don't think so). In Acrobat pro you can then change the layer properties to visible, but non-printing. It's a real pain to do this.

  • Non-TOC Files Appearing in Output

I've started to notice, when I output a RoboHelp project into a non-printed format (that is, as CHM file or a Abode AIR project), RoboHelp will include everything in my output, instead of the files that were supposed to be included through the Table of Contents. My projects tend to include files that we're keeping around for our own reference, but don't want anyone else to see, so this is a problem. I've developed a bit of a workaround where I can tag any files not in the TOC, and then exclude those files when I output the project. However, it would be nice if I didn't have to worry about it to begin with.
So, I guess my question is: is including non-TOC files in an output intended, or is it a big? If it is intended, is there another work-around that I can use to stop it?

    Welcome to our community
You are misunderstanding the way RoboHelp works. The TOC is similar to a simple web page that simply contains links to other pages. Just as you might have many pages in a web site that aren't referenced by a front end page, the TOC works similarly.
If your goal is to include only content found in the TOC, you need to investigate using Conditional Build Tags and Conditional Build Expressions that will be used to exclude content from the build.
    Cheers... Rick
