Do the basic troubleshooting steps described in the iPhone User Guide (Appendix B):
Restart
Reset
Restore from backup
Restore as new
If the last step doesn't help, there is a hardware problem with the home button.  Take it to Apple or whoever provides iPhone warranty service in your location.

  • How do I get to settings with a non-functioning home button - iPod touch5

My daughter dropped her iPod touch (gen. 5) and now the home button is not responsive.  It will not 'click'.  It is not stuck, it seems to have lost a piece under the home button and now is very loose and constantly down.  I am trying to use the 'home button app/screen setting' but I can't get to the settings screen because her iPod is in an app that I can't shut down.  There is no way to go 'home' or to 'settings' with out the home button.

Without the Home button being functional enough to access Settings and to turn on the Accessibility function which could provide an on-screen Home button, there is not much you can do.
Take it in to get it repaired.
    Cheers,

  • Non responsive select button

Yesterday the select button stopped responding. My iPod seemed to reset by just holding the menu button. All the buttons on the click wheel work and I can listen to music my just scrolling down to shuffle songs and pressing play but nothing else.
When the select button is pressed the button definately feels like normal but nothing happens.
I have already been through the restarting and restoring and am hoping for some more suggestions. Thanks!

I have only had it for about 10 months.
I am going to be in atlanta this weekend anyways- looks like a trip to the apple store is in my very near future.

  • IPhone 3g barely responsive home button

    Hi All,
My boyfriend and I both got iPhone 3g devices in Nov 09. We didn't buy AppleCare because it's probably cheaper to just get a new phone and with the strict limitations on coverage we'd have been better off going through Squaretrade, but we did neither. Boo on us.
I have seen a plethora of material on the internet regarding this problem, but no details as to what actually causes it. I am curious to know if Apple acknowledges this issue as a defect, or if they pass it off as as a "normal wear and tear" problem. My boyfriend barely uses his iPhone (most times, less than 20 mb a month and probably about 60 minutes of talk time total), so even though its over a year old, I highly doubt that's the real issue. Before I spend my life savings asking a tech to troubleshoot, I'd like to know what other people's experience have been. How much does it cost to fix if you don't have apple care? Do they ever disclose the root issue - if so what is it? Is the genius bar still charging crazy fees just to interact with customers, or will they troubleshoot first and then charge you when they fix it? If it's a known issue, will they fix for free even if you don't have AC and are out of warranty? I've also seen some suggestions to restore - has anyone had success with this?
Any assistance or guidance is appreciated.

I'm sorry, no, there isn't. Depending on where you live, and Out of Warranty replacement for the iPhone 4 is $149USD. Check your local Apple store or Authorized Apple Service Center for prices.
Sorry I was thinking of something else. You have no alternative but to get the device fixed. You can either choose Apple for repair or a 3rd party repair facility.

  • I disassembled my iPhone 4 to check a non-functioning home button.

When I reassembled it, the screen only showed vertical lines as if it were rolling very fast like old TVs used to.  It appears to be working otherwise, but I can't see any icons on the screen, just vertical lines that appear to move when I use the touch screen.  Any ideas?

if its related only to the screen, then there is a possibility that you either damaged the signal cable to the screen, or didn't connect the screen/lcd cable back to the motherboard properly.  you also voided your warranty, but this shouldn't be an issue for you, as you seem to know what you're doing as far as opening the phone yourself.  worst case isolate the problem and then order and replace the faulty parts yourself.

  • HT1212 my home button has also stopped working how can i get device in recovery mode.

i was wonding if there is a way to get a iphone 4s into recovery mode with a non functioning home button?

Unfortunately the only way to put the iPhone in recovery mode is by using the home button. If it is broken you won't be able to do this, I'd suggest to get the iPhone replaced by Apple.

  • HT1212 My home button is disabled and I am using assitive touch, I now need to reboot my phone as it has frozen. Can any body help

I've been using asstive touch because my home button doesn't work. My phone froze and I can't reboot. The sim was also removed so I can't see the screen to add a passcode. I know the phone is still working as when you turn the speaker off it still vibrates.
    Can anybody help?

With a non-functioning home button, the only thing you can do is allow the battery to die and then connect the device to the charger. This should restart it, unless something else is going on. In that case, without a functioning home button, there is nothing else you can do.
I'm not sure why you think that removing the SIM card would have any bearing on being able to see the screen, but that is not the case. The screen is not connected to the SIM.

  • The home button is not working on my iPhone 4

My home button has not been working for ages. It works about once every 10 clicks. It feels like it has something stuck under it. Please help! It is really annoying.

Method 1: Calibrate (and possibly restore)
If you're lucky, your slow-to-respond home button is due to a software glitch. To find out, you'll need to calibrate your home button. Here's how:
Open up a stock app, like the Clock. Hold down the sleep button until "Slide to power off" appears. When it does, let go of the sleep button and hold down the home button. After about 5-10 seconds, the app will close.
If this solved your problem, you are one lucky iPhone owner. If it didn't you may want to try restoring your iPhone before continuing to the second method.
Method 2: Realign the docking port
There is a chance that through normal wear and tear, your phone's docking port got misaligned, moving the home button along with it. Although a repair shop might suggest you replace the home button, this YouTuber offered a different solution.
Plug a USB cable into your iPhone. Then, gently push down on the 30-pin connector, so that it pushes up behind the home button. While you apply the pressure, click the home button. Remove the cable, and see if that fixed the problem.
Method 3: Clean the home button
A splash of soda, sticky hands, dirt in the bottom of your purse or pocket -- any of these things can damage your iPhone's home button.
For this fix, you'll need 98-99 percent isopropyl alcohol, which can be found at hardware stores. Using a cotton swab, eye dropper, or tissue, apply 2-3 drops of the isopropyl alcohol directly to the home button, avoiding the screen. Then, with a narrow, dull object (like the eraser on the back of a pencil), repeatedly tap the home button so that the alcohol seeps into the frame.
Wipe clean, and wait about 10-15 minutes before checking to see if that did the trick.
Method 4: Enable the on-screen home button
If the previous three methods did not work, it sounds like perhaps you have a completely defunct home button. In this case, your home button's connectors may have been misaligned and would require professional repair. (Or, if you're willing to brave it, iFixit shows you how to DIY.)
The good news is, you can still use your phone using its on-screen home button. Normally, this is used as an accessibility option, but it's also a common solution for those with non-functioning home buttons.
To enable the on-screen home button, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch. Turn Assistive Touch on, and you'll see a small circle appear on screen.
Tapping that circle gives you four options: Home, Siri, More (for things like multitasking and playback controls), and Favorites. In your case, ignore Favorites, but tap this on-screen button whenever you need to access your home screen, activate Siri, or get all the options you'd normally see when you double-tap the home button.
If the on-screen home button ever gets in the way, simply tap and hold to drag it anywhere else along the frame of your screen.
It's hardly an ideal solution, but it'll hold you over until you're ready to purchase a new phone or get your current one fixed.

  • IPhone 3GS Home Button Issue - iPhone Thinks Home Button Is Always Pushed

Alright, this isn't the normal(home button doesn't work) question. Listen...
Customer brought this iPhone 3GS in to replace the non-working home button. Before I did I tested it with a working screen assembly(obviously including a new home button) and it DIDN'T work. So I replaced the dock connector and speaker/mic assembly(where the home button makes it's connection. And that still doesn't work.
I have figured out now that the problem is NOT that the iPhone doesn't recognize the push of the home button but instead it thinks that the home button is always being pushed. When hold the power button(only) the iPhone will restart(which requires home+power).
Since I've tried replacing the home button and the dock connector is this problem with the logic board?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    HI iFixItMan,
I have the same problem andmine was stuck in a recovery loop and it took me about 7 hours to get workingsoftware, now I have the phone fully working the home button has no functionwhen in phone mode, I have soft reset when in phone mode and the home buttonworks (resets phone) - Power + Home button pressed together)).
The home button also works whenthe screen is lifted from the connector for DFU mode and soft reset; I’mthinking there are two connections made to the logic board one for system(software reset and DFU) and one for phone connection.
Not changed the dock or thescreen assembly due to thinking which part I need to buy :/, don't want to keep buying parts then having to keep them if they don't work
    Thanks again

  • Home button not as clicky, will I be charged?

My home button doesn't seem as clicky as other iPhones I've used. It also seems stiffer and sits lower than it should. I rang up apple and went for the express replacement. I've seen that they charge you if they don't think theres any service needed. The button itself seems to work so will they charge me?

    Excellent!
Because I've just sent my iPhone 4S for a mushy home button, and also intermittently it won't work properly (missing clicks, registering one as two and vice versa)
Because the problem is so intermittent and it happens sporadically, and once I firmly press down hard on it and go completely apesh** at it, it will work nicely for a couple of days and then go back to it's old tricks. I've explained this issue to an AppleCare Advisor and he offered me an express replacement. There's no physical damage to the iPhone, and the water indicators haven't been tripped. However, since this problem is intermittent (the not registering properly is, but the mushy and non-clicky home button doesn't stop) I don't want apple charging me a fee because my iPhone was unable to replicate the issue on command. And I can't sit with a technician for hours and wait for it to happen.
Hopefully it's a "no questions asked" replacement, for the sake of it being a problem that happens every now and then. And knowing my luck, it will probably behave itself for them. -.-
Good to hear that there are no charges. I'm releived.

  • Hello..i have IPhone 4S i did reset to factory settings by fault and till now after a 2 hours there is nothing just a waiting icon in the middle of the screen and none of home or turn off button are response so i do need your help plz

hello..i have IPhone 4S i did reset to factory settings by fault and till now after a 2 hours waiting (as known it takes a 1 to 2 minutes maximum) there is nothing just a blank screen and a running waiting icon in the middle of the screen and none of home or turn off button are responsed so i do need your help plz & thanks in advance..

Try to reset it by holding the power an home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.  If it won't reset, you'll probably have to force it into recovery mode and restore it, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808.

  • My iphone is non-responsive--including the on/off button and home button.  What can I do?

My iphone is completely non-responsive--I can't even turn it off or on.  What can I do?

Hold both buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears to reboot iOS. Should take 10-20 seconds of holding.
If it doesn't work charge for 15 minutes with the mains adapter and do it again.

  • Home Button Non-responsive

The Home Button on my touch does not work. Stopped working same day I upgraded to 2.1, coincidence? Fixes?
The first questions I had when I got it new: Why is there a mechanical button on a touchscreen device? Why can't I just go between modes with an icon on the screen?

if softreset or restore of firmware dont help i'd suspect
it's a hardware issue which would require fixing
about why there is a home button rather then a on screen button
i guess is it's a quick way to exit applications which an area on
the touch screen would not really be would likely be the bane
of air hockey game players :P
