Non responsive MacPro won't boot

I currently have a major dilamma. My 5 year old Mac Pro as from yesterday, won't boot up. Instead I get a pink and white pattern on the screen followed by the spnning wheel. There seems to be no way to access any of the other internal drives on the Mac as I have cloned the original HD for this specific reason.
Any advice would be most appreciated, as I sincerely hope this doesn't mean buying a new Mac.

System Profile or what you remember.
9GB tells me 2006/7 with FBDIMMs and a 2 x 512MB set
An older GPU that likely needs to be replaced. X1900 or OEM 7300GT or 8800GT
Pull all the drives out.
Shutdown and unplug everything. Press power on button for 10 seconds then connect just kb/mouse display and power.
Zap PRAM/NVRAM
Now connect your cloned drive.
Oh, and inspect the graphic card for make/model and dust.
Inspect the DIMM Riser cards.
Try with just one set of newest RAM in slot A1 and A2
Consider new FBDIMM set $25 from Amazon, and a new ATI 5770 for $250 from Apple.
Might need a new system boot drive. Try Samsung 840 EVO 120GB $99.

    Sorry, this is detailed, but I figured I had to explain everything I've done so far and the issues I've had. Thanks much!
    My MacPro won't boot up. Initially I thought it was a software problem, and went through this thread looking for help. After a while, I came to think it wasn't the OS but a hardware problem. Here's why:
    The initial problem was that I couldn't login to OS X (Lion). It started with the screen flickering, and freezing up. One time I logged in, and there were these uniform dots across my screen, and a black border overlaying the screen. I restarted, and that was when I couldn't login at all. It would go the gray screen with the dark gray Apple logo. The sundial would appear below...and then suddenly freeze. At that point, nothing.
    I tried to boot into Safe Mode, but this also didn't work. The same result.
    I then decided I'd do a clean install from the Install DVD and overwrite my boot drive (everything is saved onto a RAID Array). However, I couldn't load the OS installer.
    I then thought maybe it was the HDD itself (the boot drive), so I bought a new one and tried to format and install. Again, the same thing. The DVD drive would activate, the gray screen would appear, and then it would freeze at the sundial. But this time, the dark gray overlay would come on screen, with the small box that told me to hold down power key (the one in mutliple languages).
    So I then began to suspect the problem was deeper. I ran the Apple Hardware Diagnostic test. (I disconnected everything except the keyboard and the display.) The quick version showed everything was fine, but the extended version came back with some varying results.
    First, my specs.
    This is a MacPro 3,1.
    24 GB RAM (8GB installed by vendor, 16 GB recently installed by me)
    Bay 1 - Unformatted new HDD
    Bay 2 - Slice 1 of RAID Array
    Bay 3 - Slice 2 of RAID Array
    Bay 4 - Formatted HDD for Storage
    When I ran the first test, it was as above. Here is the error message I received:
    4MEM/62/40000005: 0x79600ff18
    This made me think it was a memory issue. So I took out the new RAM I had recently installed and ran the test again. I got this:
    4MEM/60/40000005: 0x79650d18
    So I took the old RAM out and put the new RAM back in. I also put the original, formatted HDD with OS X back into Bay 1. Here's what I got this time:
    4SNS/3/4000000: TMOP-128.000
    The new kind of error led me to think the problem was the old HDD and old RAM (after all, when I used only the new RAM, I put the old boot drive back in). When I ran the test, with the unformatted HDD in Bay 1 and the new RAM, I got...no error message!
    So I restarted my system, hoping I could load the Install DVD now and install Mac OS X on the new HDD in Bay 1. But...nothing. Same as the original result. Gray screen with a freeze on the sundial, and then gray overlay telling me to shut down. Aaargh!!!
    Someone suggested trying to login to Single User mode. I was tried and was able to do that. But, what do I do from there?
    So I rebooted, and then tried to login when holding down the option key. It came up with the option to load the Install DVD. I said yes, and of course, same result as before.
    So, as a last step, I put my old HDD back in and started the system holding the option key. This disc is a dual boot drive with Windows 7 on another partition. It gave me the following options:
    Mac OS X HDD (my Lion install)
    Windows 7
    Recovery HD
    Install Mac OS X (DVD)
    For kicks, I chose Windows 7 to see what would happen. It actually logged me in! ... but it was like I was in an old safe mode in this sense: the screen size was the smallest available (that is, all the icons were big).
    This makes me think that maybe (again, maybe) the problem is the video card. (Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT) This might explain the flickering and freezing I initially had when I could actually login. But...really, I'm at a loss and don't know if I should take the time and money to get a new video card.
    Any suggestions???

    Windows 7 DVD has a decent memtest and you are in Safe Mode probably due to Windows didn't shutdown gracefully.
    You can also use chkdsk or WD Lifeguard to certify all the disk sectors are mapped out if they need be.
    8800GT: you have heard of the 10 minutes in over for 350*?
    But you might want a new card anyway.
    Vendors and RAM. Well it was working but buying RAM esp FBDIMMs and my guess is you have some 4GB DIMMs. Also mixing sets or brands can work most of the time, but not always.
    RAM probllems result in dirty files and other errrors so fix the problem, make sure you have a good pair and no errors. Or more. And then try clean install.
    Windows 7 w/ AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys does not like an Apple array to be present. MacDrive gets around that and allows mounting - and avoiding BSODs.
    Cheap as I have found, highest quality though, 667MHz so they run 4% slower is all, if you need one good set:

    Lion Recovery Disk Repair? you did or didn't?
    Lion installer: hopefully you kept the ESD package for later re-install (without having to download and all that bother).
    Some people play musical chairs with the Risers and DIMMs and DIMM slots. Or just RMA and get new sets but I would try with just half the 24GB or less, then test with half the 16GB set. To have one set it would be one DIMM in A1 and B1.
    And of course reset the SMC - hitting power button 10 seconds while unplugged (and no devices or cables connected).

  • MacPro won't boot from any disk but the original

    We picked up a lightly used MacPro 2 x3.2G Quad Intel Xeon at work. The plan was to remove the internal drive (which is also the boot disk) and replace it with a brand new WD Caviar Black 500G drive with OS 10.5 freshly installed, and then use Migration Assistant to transfer from the old machine.
    The problem is that when trying to run the OSX install disc on this new machine, it will restart, but then not boot from the install disc. Rather, the apple logo pops up, it thinks for a bit, then the grey curtain drops and i get the multi-language "you must restart your machine" message.
    So, after successfully doing an install of the OS on the fresh drive using a different machine, i put it back into the new one, restarted holding OPT, and selected the fresh OS drive. I get the same multi-language message, and the machine will not boot. I've tried installing the OS on a different HD as well, to the same results.
    The new machine will restart using the startup disk (internal HD) that came with it and will run Apps, etc. To confuse things further, i pulled my startup HD out of my personal tower at home (also running OS 10.5, but it's been updated to 10.5.8), stuck it in the new machine, and tried to reboot from that. This DID work (normal time startup, apps work, etc).
    I thought this might be a HD problem, but now it seems like a machine problem. Maybe it doesn't like the OS install? I dunno.. Thoughts?
    I just had one. I'll try to clone my HD/OS from my personal computer to the new WD 500G drive, and if that works, i'll just go from there...maybe i just had to type this out to think of something different to try, but i'll post it anyways...

    So you're saying essentially that this new machine, when it came out of the Apple factory, had OS 10.5.x installed on it, and because that was the original install, it won't recognize something that has OS 10.5.0, even if that install is on a fresh HD? Basically the hardware inside the tower can't/won't recognize any OS prior to the original 10.5.x factory install?
    well, if that's the case, then 1)that's ridiculous of Apple to do, and 2)it makes this whole problem make more sense, and it's good future knowledge for me to have.
    I cloned my personal OS (but not the users, docs, etc) and stuck that in the new tower, and it works well so far. I'm in the process of copying files to other internal drives, and i'll be using Migration Assistant to transfer users from our old system to the new one, and if all still works fine after that, i think we'll be good to go. So, based on what you've told me about the factory OS install, etc, i think we're on the right track.

  • How to open CD/DVD tray if the MacPro won't boot

    Just a few days ago I updated my version Safari on a MacPro. After the upgrade, my computer, I got a message on the reboot that said that it cannot read the disks I inserted. Since then, I can't get the machine to start at all. I'd like to boot it up from a CD/DVD (Drive Genius) but can't figure out how to get the tray to open to let me insert it. (1) Has anyone had such issues with updating Safari? (2) How can I get the tray to open if I can't get the machine to boot up to start with? (I've tried rebooting and holding down the "c" key. I've tried "target disk" mode but that doesn't get me anywhere.) (I think it may have 10.5.8 OSX and two internal drives.)

    Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
    Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
    Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
    If this fails then try this:
    Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • MacPro won't boot from (2) internal drives but will from DVD

    My MacPro hung this morning, blank screen but mouse red LED working. I restarted it and it booted into my 2nd internal drive with 10.5.2 rather than "Macintosh HD". Checked Time Machine and seemed to be all good.
    I used the DVD to get TimeMachine to do a complete restore from internal drive 4 onto the main Macintosh HD. This got as far as saying something like "restore complete, click to restart using restored disk".
    After clicking I just got a beachball of death.
    Used DVD to run disk utility, clean bill of health on all drives except verify permissions gets 15% through then stops.
    Now, when I try and boot from either of my two startup disks the MacPro starts up, goes to greyscreen then I get a couple of little clicking noises and the whole thing shuts down.
    Tried unplugging everything then just put power lead back in and monitor connection,
    Tried running Apple Hardware Test (as it boots from disk but not drives, thought it might be a power supply problem) but AHT gets to "test 1" then locks up
    I can boot into single user mode, am about to try FSCK but running out of things to try.
    Can I access files from the desktop and put hem onto a remote machine or USB stick from Single User Mode - or access/mount my drives from the DVD. In the "old" days it was poosible to boot to a desktop from a CD - can that still be done?

    I always keep spare drives, and use SuperDuper to keep images even of drive volumes.
    Keeping one drive to OS only and no data or prefs helps.
    Having an emergency drive or partition: a must (sort of like Micromat TTPro eDrive only better).
    Pull the drive for now. Maybe Data Rescue II later. And a FW case you can throw it into for repairs or to recover files.
    I am surprised you don't get the "stop" sign, a circle + slash, that often indicates corrupt journal/directory and no boot device where it expects to find one.
    TechTool Pro, commercial $90 5.0 is due soon, hopefully they were just waiting now for 10.5.5 to be out and see if it would change or alter (or break) their utility.
    Backups, whether TS or a clone made with SuperDuper, are critical, should run on their own automatically in background, and the OS doesn't have to be that large, fit it on 60-100GB disk image so you don't have to worry about partition and size.
    For now, use the DVD to install OS X on a new drive partition to begin to build a foundation from which you can do more and mark this as emergency-only. You can clone it later if needed to a "working" system. SuperDuper is free for full copy, or use Disk Utility Restore even to set the source and 'target' destination volumes.

  • MacPro won't boot to DVD install media

    Hi,
    I have a MacPro that I'd like to do a clean install on. It's a 2010 5,1. When trying to boot to the DVD media I hold down option and select the DVD icon that comes up. The Apple logo appears but that's as far as it goes. It gets hung up on the Apple logo. I've tried it multiple times and waited over 30 minutes but it just doesn't proceed. I've also tried the DVD in 3 different drives to see if it was the drive.
    The drive actually stops spinning so I know it's not even trying to read the DVD.
    I installed an SSD a couple weeks ago and have been running on it just fine.

    The Apple logo is not resident in the Mac's ROM. Its appearance means you got some stuff off a Hard Drive or DVD. Failure to see the gear means you did not get very far after that.
    If you have "suspect" drives installed, pull them out, as they may be interfering with what you are trying to accomplish.

    I have a MAC PRO, it was asleep during a power outtage... Now when i try to restart the computer, it never boots - and gets caught in an endless white screen. I've tried to zap my PRAM, still nothing. I just ran out of my apple support, and they are telling me to bring it - is there anything I can do on my own to fix this without having to pay a fortune?

    A storm can send too much juice down the modem line and fry the ethernet ports, as long as it is wired, does not need to be running - and sleep is still 'running.'
    I consider UPS $200 to be worth investment - as much AppleCare and helps protect the PSU which costs more to replace. My modem had to be replaced (router seems okay) was $79.

  • Help!  MacPro won't boot

    Everything was running fine then I did some automatic software updates...I believe OS X was updated to 10.4.9, there was a quicktime update and an airport extreme update and maybe one other. After the update, I shut down and when I went to start up again, I can't boot up. The mac gets to various stages of booting and then the screen gets darker and I get a message in 4 languages saying I need to restart my computer.
    ANy ideas how I can get up and running again. This is my first mac so I am not familiar with the ins and outs. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

    It's called a kernel panic. Kernel panics are caused most often by hardware failures such as bad RAM. However, they can also be caused by disk or system corruption. I would first insert the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer into the optical drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics. The diagnostics will help determine if the problem is hardware related.
    If there doesn't appear to be a hardware problem then do this:
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    If this does not resolve the problem but the hard drive is OK, then you will need to reinstall OS X. You can do that as follows without having to erase the drive:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Blinking LED light on startup. MacPro won't boot.

    I've had this happen before so I pulled all 8 ram chips, a total of 20gig. I put two 4 gig cards back in slot one for riser A & B only and was able to reboot. I figured it was a ram issue. I added all new ram chips that I new were good filling the rest of the DIMM slots on both risers. The rest were matching 2 gig. Reboot went fine. But for some reason Dimm slots 2 and 4 on both risers are showing up empty in the about this mac "Memory" panel and I'm only registring 12gig from a total of 20gig.  So any ideas? How would I determine if it's the riser cards or the mother board?
    I appreciate any suggestions for trouble shooting.

    Well, if it doesn't matter which dimms are in those slots, and it's always the same two slots, I guess it really is a hardware problem.  I don't know what else you can do to diagnose it.
    It could be a costly repair.  If the machine runs fine without using those slots can you "live" without them?

  • Mavericks won't install, the button in App Store is blank and non-responsive.

    This is extremely frustrating, and I have read every website trying to answer this issue. None of their problems match mine.
    I tried to download Mavericks yesterday. It appeared to download as normal, with the icon in launch pad, but the progress bar never moved. I cancelled the download, and tried to restart it. The download button is non-responsive. I've tried going to the store tab, clicking unfinished downloads, and it says all downloads are complete.
    When I go to purchases, Mavericks is listed under "other downloads," but the button is solid black with no text, e.g. download or install, and is non-responsive. Clicking the button does nothing.
    I have tried using CCleaner to clean the app store's cache, restarting the computer with a full shutdown, quitting and restarting App Store, etc. Nothing works.
    If I close and reopen App Store after a full shut down, Mavericks will disappear from the purchases menu. If I go to Mavericks, click "free upgrade," then button changes to "install." When I click install, nothing happens. Mavericks reappears under the purchases menu with its button, again, completely black with no text. The button is non-responsive.
    Having a $2,500 Mac, I have to say that I am extraordinarily upset with the shoddy work of Apple over the past few years. For $2,500 I expect the product to work.

    Actually, it appears to have started downloading, even the the purchases tab still doesn't reflect it.
    Try what I did, typing "sudo nvram boot-args="-x"" (include the quotations around the -x), and then entering your account password.
    Reboot the system, which will cause it to do a full reboot (you'll find your mac operates very slowly). Log into your account, then try hitting "free upgrade" and "download" from the Mavericks page in app store (not the purchases tab). It will ask you for your Apple ID and password, then it *should* automatically take you to launch pad.
    If the download doesn't seem to be progressing, press the icon in launch pad to pause it. Exit launch pad and scroll down in App Store to 'free apps" on the right side. Click to download one of them, enter your password and Apple ID as usual, and see if it downloads. Once finished, hit the Mavericks icon again to unpause it. It should start then. It's clearly a very large install, so over the past thirty minuites the progress bar has moved roughly a milimeter.

  • Non-responsive keyboard/trackpad in W7 install via Boot Camp

    I have a brand new MacBook Air, upgraded to Maverics, and trying to install Windows 7 64 bit.
    I have made a usb stick via an iso image from DigitalRiver, through Boot Camp, and started the installation via bootcamp. I also installed the rEFIt drivers, so i got the nice boot menu.
    When I boot into the installation, i cant do anything. My trackpad and keyboard is non-responsive (I can't even get the caps lock to light up).
    I've tried to:
    *boot into W7 safe mode, pressing F8 while booting, but it doesn't help.
    *"run unsigned drivers", from the same menu
    *Removing setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder on the disk. Also with no avail.
    I have seen that people have been struggling with keyboard and trackpads in W7 over Boot camp, but I cant even install it...
    Please help

    Only key responding is the shutdown key.
    I don't have any external mice or keyboards.

    SOLVED
    I just did it all over again, and it worked. Removed the partition and installed from boot camp again.

    No issue with normal firefox

  • MacPro, OSX 10.7.4 Safari 5.1.7 won't boot keeps crashing. How do I install another version? It won't let me.

    In my Applications folder, I have Safari 5.1.6. When I try the manual install of of 5.1.7 it won't let me because it says I have a "newer" version of Safari already installed!   ???
    I tried reinstalling OSX 10.7.4, but still have the same problem.  You can't throw it out or replace it either, or restore from Time Machine.

  • Won't boot -URGENT response needed

    Hi Guys,
    I can't stress enough how urgent this is. I'm on a print deadline and my Mac has decided to pack up on me.
    It just won't boot normally or in save mode.  I've booted from the disc to use Disk Utility, which give all my drive the all clear.  I've used single user mode and this is the problem it come up against
