Non-Retina v.s. Retina.

Hi i bet there is bunch of questions like this, so sorry for asking.
i'm travling to USA in a few days and I thought of buying a portable laptop, in that case a macbook pro. but the problem is that i can't decide if i'm going to for a retina or a non-retina desplay. My travel in USA would just for 9 months and would be living on a budget. So the the whole thing has somthing to do with what i could afford. but on the other hand it is very likely that i'm going to study and work more with photography next year. Investing in a decent computer could be a good investment.
i'm going to use it mostly for photograpy, lightroom and photoshop but also for som writing and some futher adventures, so it need to be suitable for travels.
Is the Retina display worth the price of not having the option to upgrade?

Thank you

Get the first one in your list.
I own a Retina Macbook Pro and let me tell you, Photoshop is much better in the non Retina Screen - kinda blurry since Photoshop doesn't have Retina support and i'm not sure when Adobe is going to release an update to support the Retina Screen.  Don't get me wrong - it's a nice screen for viewing pictures and watching movies - totally different when you're editing pictures.
Also remember that once you decide to upgrade the RAM, you can't do that in the Retina.
1 and 2 will do the job just fine - if you're on a budget as you mentioned - 1 will do just fine for you.
good luck

  • MacBook Pro 13 with retina or without retina ?

    HYe guys. Was planning to buy a apple laptop. This is my 1st MacBook Pro. So I'm confuse should i get macbook pro with retina or without retina ? I'm studying it. So for now i use for office work. Excel. Word. in feature. I might be using heavy program like Adobe. Photo shop. So which one should i get ? I was planning to get MacBook Pro without retina because i can upgrade the ram n hard disk in feature. Please i need advise from you guys. Can MacBook Pro without retina after few year i can use heavy apps ?  And can MacBook Air use a heavy apps ?

    I think you shouldn't get macbook pro or retina or even air. The heavy editing is consider you to get bulk windows laptop with more ram, better cpu and dedicated graphics when it comes to your video editing. If you want mac computer, why not get New Mac pro 2014 (Dustbin shape) or get yourself build your own custom pc. Money wise. You need to know more about IT things, You can't fool yourself when you step in apple store because everytime I visit to apple store, all the staffs definitely don't know **** about IT and they talk nonsense and push us to buy. Act real smart.

  • 15 inch MacBook Pro non-retina or with Retina?

    Hello everyone
    I have the new iMac and got it in early December to replace my old 2008 MacBook Pro. I sold that one and now have decided to get a new 15 inch  MacBook Pro. But I am stuck on whitch one to buy.
    Here are the things that I will do with this computer
    Use all of the pre-loaded apps
    Download more from the Mac App Store
    Import pictures from my Nikion Camera, 64GB Black iPhone 5, 64GB Black iPad 4 into iPhoto and edit them in Aperture
    Use iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband
    Use Pages, Keynote, Numbers
    Here's the configuration I would buy if I get the non-retina model
    $1799 model
    4GB RAM
    256GB SSD
    1680X1050 Glossy display
    2.3GHz Quad-Core i7
    Here's the configuration I would buy if I get the retina model
    $2199 model standard configuration
    OR if there are any refurbished $2799 models from Apple's refurbished store
    Please let me know what you all think!
    Thanks for helping me!!!

    Personally, I would go for the non-retina display, and here are my reasons:
    1. It's far cheaper, and you're getting a very similar product.
    2. Yes, the Retina display comes with 8GB of RAM, and from what I know, with the newest models you can put 16GBs of RAM in them. If you ever needed more RAM, you can't replace it on your retina display model. However, you can go out and buy 8GBs of good RAM for $50, and replace the non-retina display RAM without voiding your warranty.
    3. If you ever want to upgrade your SSD, or switch over to a massive hard drive for the sake of storage capacity over speed, you can also do so without voiding your warranty on the non-retina display.
    Both of the displays are gorgeous, and while it's true that Retina display is prettier, the non-retina display is quite nice. Furthermore, if you ever need to do anything at all in your computer, you're out of luck with the Retina display, as the case is glued together. I personally have an old '09 MBP, before retina display, and the display is perfectly fine. You'll save a lot more money getting the non-retina display, and it will probably last you longer, seeing as SSD's tend to be more reliable than flash storage. True, they're the same thing, SSD's are alined in an array and are made for speed and reliability. If I were you, I'd go for the non-retina display.

  • Should I get a MacBook Pro non retina upgraded or retina base model?

    Hi I am looking to buy a MacBook Pro non retina or retina model, I have a budget so I would buy the non retina i7 with 4gb of ram and upgrade to 8 later or buy the retina model with no upgrades and not being able to upgrade  it later on... I might be playing a bit of games like skyrim oblivion gta maybe other stuff downloading music and movies ... Please help me decide thanks.
    MacBook Pro

    You're most welcome, Bacon.
    I know you'll love your new MBP.
    This is my 2nd, and they're just wonderful.

  • Replacing standard non-Retina display with Retina display

    Hi, does anyone know if it's theoretically possible to take a standard 13/15inch MacBook Pro's display and replace it with a 13/15 inch Retina display assembly?

    It may possible to physically "replace" it (stick the new one in and try to reattach the wires) but the real question is whether it would actually work afterward. Especially on older MacBooks, the GPU muscle might not be there to drive all the additional pixels, and drive them fast enough.

  • I am looking to buy a new macbook. I am not sure whether to go for the Air, 13inch Retina or 15inch Retina.

    I mainly use my current laptop for browsing the internet on my sofa, however I also want to be able to use photoshop and logic without a struggle.
    My thinking so far is, MBA 13inch is portable and fast with good battery. rMBP 13 is more powerful but still portable. rMBP 15 has better graphics performance than the 13ich and might be worth the extra and sacrifice some portability.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks.

    If you're going to start using Photoshop, you'll get much better performance from the 15" rMBP's discrete video card. I wish that I had gone for the full 1GB card on my 15" non-Retina because, sometimes, the 512GB discrete card just isn't powerful enough. If you're looking at portability, then I'm assuming that you wouldn't even consider the non-Retina 15"? I would rule the Air out entirely, so you're left, in my opinion, on the differences between the 13" and the 15" rMBP - and in performance, the 15" rMBP just can't be matched by the 13" model.
    You may get some differences of opinion here - were it me, I'd go for a non-Retina 15" since you can still add your own RAM and a SSD to it. That being said, it's nowhere near as portable as the 15" rMBP.
    Good luck with your journey...

  • Load @2x retina images on retina equipped iPads?

    I've seen a number of ways to dynamically load the retina version of an image (with @2x appended to the filename), but none of them seem to work with Edge animations. I'm guessing this is because these solutions work within CSS and not within embedded javascript. Has anyone found a method to dynamically load retina images based on the device?

    Well, I gave it a shot. Here's the code I came up with. Unfortunately, it isn't working. Since I'm new to Javascript, I'm very open with the idea that I'm doing something wrong.
    function getDevicePixelRatio() {
    if(window.devicePixelRatio === undefined) return 1; // No pixel ratio available. Assume 1:1.
    return window.devicePixelRatio;
        if(getDevicePixelRatio() > 1)
            var im='retina/';
        else
            var im='images/';

  • Macbook Pro with Retina or without Retina

    Hi,
    This may sound simple but I received a reply to my earlier query and asked me to visit http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD102LL/A#hardware.
    I just want to know that in the above link it is Macbook Pro with Retina or it is Macbook Pro without Retina.
    Thanks.

    IMHO = In My Humble Opinion.
    IMHO, you're better off with a non-Retina machine at this time, too.

  • MAC BOOK AIR Serial # C1*******G85 Retina or without Retina I would like to know

    Please let me know I get one Macbook Air with Serial # C1*******085 ,Please I would like to know this one have Retina display or without
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

    There is no model of MacBook Air with Retina Display.

  • Ugh, Retina or no Retina, that is the question

    I have placed my order for the 2.3 Retina MBP, (arrival june 26-29) but I am having second thoughts due to the 256gb flash drive.  I just don't know if that is enough space in the long run.  I do some light photo editing and some home movie stuff.  So, definately not a high end pro by any stretch.
    I like the speed of the SSD and the diplay sounds great, but will it be that much better than the same priced MBP without Retina?  Also, was it mentioned in the keynote that apps etc will look a little 'jank' until they are updated to Retina specs?  It would be a little underwhelming if things looked crappy out of the gate.
    It would be a helluva lot easier decision if it sounded like the SSD would be upgradable.
    Any input good or bad would be appreciated.

    If I was purchasing the retina-MBP, I'd go with the upgraded version.  Once you're spending $2200 on a laptop, what's another $600?  A 512GB SSD should be plenty for the long run.  256GB would not be sufficient for me, but that can vary from person to person.
    Also, I've been reading hands-on reviews of the unit today.  The display options they've added relieve some of my worries.  You have the option to increase actual screen real-estate from 1440x900 up to 1920x1200 equivalent.  The display will be scaling some, but it should still be clear enough to not cause issues.
    One good note is the 14-day return period.  Once you get it, if you don't like it, take it back!   ....Hmmm, anyone know if there's a restocking charge to do this?

  • 13" Retina vs 15" Retina - same price

    Hi,
    I am thinking of gettina new macbook for work. I mainly develop using XCode and use Parallels for any ASP.NET related work on Windows. I currently have a 15" Retina 2012 model with 16GB Ram. I find this sufficient but have the opportunity to visit New York from Europe and with the prices so much lower I would really like to make a purchase.
    I have my eyes on the 13" retina 2.6GHz Core i5 with 16GB RAM 512GB or the the 15" Retina 8GB RAM 256GB Core i7 2.0GHz.
    They both cost $1,999.
    Size of screen doesn't really matter here both are fine by me. Both cost the same but the 15" has less storage and less RAM. I could live with the storage but it is the RAM that is worrying me. I've read that RAM is very useful for virtual machines like Parallels. So my question is will the 8gb ram suffice for Parallels. I know the 16 does but I'm wondering if I could just go for the 15" since the price is the same. Also I guess the 16GB ram on the 13" is shared with the gfx card.
    I will not be doing any gaming as I know macs are rubbish at it and overheat like mad. I'm not paying more just for the gfx card.
    I can see this is another trick Apple are making on customers ("upgrade for a little extra to get a better mac" sales model)
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

    Since I do not wish to spend much more do you think the 13" 16gb ram would suffice given the graphics card memory is shared? What I mean to say is I would not like to pay more just to have the discreet graphics card which I would not use. What do you think?

  • 13" Retina or 15" Retina

    Hi, I know this has probably been discussed a lot. But I'm looking for advice on which model to buy. I would like to keep with the 13" model (I currently have a unibody Macbook 2.4GHz with 4GB RAM). But I am concerned with the rMBP performance after reading some reviews and the lack of dedicated Graphics. I use my Mac obviously for every day tasks, email, web surfing, calendar etc. I also use iPhoto and iMovie for minor editing and I also do software and web development, mainly using XCode and Netbeans. My question is, would the 13 rMBP perform these tasks well, baring in mind I prefer the form factor of the 13". I am willing to consider the 15" seeing as the price difference is not that great from the 256GB 13" model to the base 15" model. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Having worked with developers all my career the one thing they tell me is that the greater the spec of their machines the better it is for coding. Developers would say that of course, but from a longevity point of view alone I personally would shelve out on the higher spec 15". Sure, you lose the convinence of the 13" form factor, but the 15" is pretty compact for what it is, and a larger screen is always better for coding IMHO.

  • MacBook Pro retina or non retina?

    What is a better laptop ?
    I'm not sure which one to buy, the retina which I would have to wait for updates to see the full potential of the retina.
    I want to have the laptop for A while and will need it to use everyday, emailing, TONS of googling and TABS up
    The occasional photoshop and lots of photos.
    I haven't owned a macbook before so I want something with a decent hard drive which leads me to the non retina
    However the retina is lighter and I'll take it traveling with me a few times a year.
    I have heard about problems with both, the non retina overheats and you can't sit it on your bed?
    Is that true?
    The retina is more expensive but faster
    I'd love to hear from anyone who owns either to help me decide
    As I will be buying one in the next few weeks
    Thank you in advance

    A couple of things to start off with before we get to "to retina or not to retina".
    Based on your description of your daily computing tasks you don't really need "THE MOST POWERFULL AWESOMEST AMAZING COMPUTER EVER".
    What does never owning a macbook before have to do with needing a decent hard drive.  And I think by "decent hard drive" you are refering to the storage space and not the quality of the drive.
    "Traveling a few times a year" with your computer means you're seeking the slimmest and lightest available?  People who commute with their laptops daily need to be concerned about this more than somebody who will take it out a few times a year.
    Also you should never put any computer, windows, mac, or other kind on a soft surface.  What happens is that those surfaces conform to the shape of the computer and block the fan in/out ports.  This prevents the computer from being able to properly cool itself and result in overheating.
    So "to retina or not to retina"...
    I believe you'd be plenty happy with a regular macbook pro.  In fact I'd bet you'd be happy with a macbook air.  The current generation air's virtually match the 13 inch macbook pro's in specifications. The biggest distinction you'll notice will be storage space for the money.  Ultimately if you choose traditional HDD over SSD you'll get more storage space for the money.
    You mention "the retina is more expensive but faster".  You are correct, sort of.  The retina maintains a speed advantage based primarly in this "all flash" design.  Apple directly connected the ram to the motherboard, and the SSD directly to the motherboard as well.  This does significantly increase performance. However I believe you may be able to achieve considerably close performance with a SSD in a non-retina MBP.
    In my opinion you would be well suited with a macbook air, spend the extra money you'll save by buying a MBA on upgrading the hard drive/ram/processor and you'll have a computer much lighter than a MBP with similar performace to a 13 inch MBP.
    If you're completely sold on the rMBP(retina macbook pro) consider/remember this, however you buy it is how it'll stay. You cant upgrade/change the ram or hard drive.  They're built in and you cannot change them.
    If you want to save some money upfront and get less ram and less storage space and upgrade later your best bet is the regular MBP.

  • Retina Screen PS panels

    So we now have retina screen PS and Ai so I naturaly want to update my panels I made in FB to support retina screen.
    Does anyone know of any good resources or examples?
    I can find a bunch on iOS but none on Mountain Lion Retina support.

    Retina was supported since product version CC. If you run your extension on e.g. Photoshop CC, the text will be well supported.
    If your included any picture in the extension, if your picture was show as 32*32, you need to provide a 64*64 picture to it ans specify the size as 32*32.

  • Retina MPB or not

    Coming up seven years ago I bought my first iMac but I'm now considering getting a MBP but I'm just not sure about retina. Is it just an expensive gimmick?Prior to my iMac, I used PC's since Windows 95; Psion MC400 laptop before that and Sinclair ZX80 before that - OK, history over. Obviously none of these had retina display yet I have managed perfectly well without it up to now, so what will retina give me?  Zillions of pixels sure, but is that only useful to professional photographers and graphic designers?  And how much current software is optimised for retina and how does non-optimised software perform? I'm sure many of you have invested in retina so I would appreciate your views.  Regards to all.

    I would recommend the retina if you concerned about weight and color accuracy.  The SSD is a huge advantage for battery life and instant on.  The 15" also features a dedicated graphics card.

  • MBP Retina wont boot from USB HD

    Hi every1,
    I used my old macbook(2009, 10.7) created a couple of bootalble images on my USB 2.0 external hard drive, they all 10.7. one of them was installed on one partition, all the other were cloned by CCC on other separate partitions. they all can be booted from my macbook. then i got the new Retina, tried to boot them from it, i got a crossed circle instead, none of them is booting, but they still bootable on my macbook. any1 knows the reason? much appreciated!

    thx Clinton.
    the problem is that all the images(10.7.4) in my HD are for reimaging some old macbooks and iMacs at work.
    the Retina was work issued, so was my macbook. i had to give away my macbook, since i got the Retina. The Retina is the only Mac i got at work at the moment.
    what i want to do is modify some of the images(10.7.4) in my USB HD from the Retina, then to reimage those old macbooks and iMacs. hence i do not have to go to Mac rooms or borrow one of the Macbooks from where they belong.
    P.S. i already free updated my Retina to mountain lion via app store.
