Non running Safari 1.3.1 (Panther)

I was experiencing a hiccup with my Safari. When trying to login to a particular web software that uses a "sheet" (is that the right term? one of those windows that emerges from the top of your current window!) for the login and password, the sheet never appeared. I can login fine using Firefox or Explorer, but Safari would just sit there dumbly waiting for me to fill in the user and password into a sheet that it wasn't displaying!
So when I saw an update I thought I'd give it a try... bad move, now Safari won't even run! and the icon is a drop box icon!!
Prior to the update I had tried everything to get rid of Safari and all associated files, prefs, plists, emptied the cache etc. yet still when I ran it, it remembered the website I was connecting too. This was odd because it consists of an IP address on my local network, not something Apple are likely to know about! I could not manage to get it to forget this info, suggesting that there is a file somewhere that Safari knows about, but I don't, which could be the file that's causing the behavior.
Does anybody have any (sensible) suggestions?

  • Entire computer freeze while running Safari in OS X Mavericks

I honestly can't recall the last time I've had a full "system freeze" on this or my two previous MacBook Pro laptops.  But now it's happened twice in the past couple weeks, both times while running Safari and under OS X 10.9.2.  This is the sort of freeze where the only thing I could get to function was the trackpad or bluetooth mouse.  I could move the mouse around but couldn't click on anything.  Nor could I request a Force Quit as none of the pulldowns worked, nor would <option><command> <esc> bring up any menu.  I closed the lid but the computer wouldn't even go to sleep.  My last resort was to hold down the power key until the machine shut down which worked.  I restarted and it came up ok.  I am about to go stare at the system log but haven't done so yet.
Might this be a Mavericks issue??  I am running the latest 10.9.2 and I've been running that for both of these recent events.  Anyone seeing this???  Again both times it happened while Safari was up and running so I suppose it could be a Safari issue but I am most often on Safari anyway so it's a bit premature to blame Safari.
    Any thoughts???
    thanks... bob..

    Bob,
I've had Mavericks on my MacBook Pro, a 2009 MacBook and an iMac since the day it was released and have installed updates up to and including 10.9.2 on the dates each update was released.  Safari is my primary browser and I use it a lot.  I have not experienced such a problem on any of the 3 computers. I have been very pleased with the performance of all 3 machines.
Since the problem is so random on your system, it will probably be difficult to diagnose.  If you have not done so, possible a clean install from the Recovery Partition will fix the problem.

  • Ongoing non-functioning Safari saga

Safari quit working for me around Nov. 3. I've followed the many threads by other frustrated folks experiencing similar problems, and I've tried 'most everything suggested. (I'm running Safari 1.3.1, BTW, on OS 10.3.9)
At first, Safari couldn't "find the server" for ANY site, despite an active internet connection. Ditto for Software Update. No such problems using Firefox, which has (of necessity) become my default browser.
All diagnostics say my system and hardware are peachy. I've reset, repaired permissions, trashed preferences, resolved duplicate fonts (for the most part--see below), trashed icons, you name it.
I've managed to restore SOME functionality to Safari by changing two settings: my default fonts, and cookies (switched to 'accept all' from 'only from sites I navigate to'). I can now access Google, my Yahoo mail account, and other uncomplicated stuff (couldn't, before). No, I'm not happy with the "accept all cookies" setting--I won't surf that way, but it was an experiment.
STILL CANNOT access the really important stuff, like my online degree program (log-in uses a perl script) and my university's library online resources page--should be pretty basic, right? A library? Sheesh.
Why, might you ask, did changing the font work? I went to Font Book, noticed some duplicate fonts, and resolved most of those. But certain of my most-used fonts wouldn't resolve: Courier, Times, Geneva, Helvetica, Monaco, and Symbol. For these, I'd select "Resolve duplicates" from the Font Book menu and each time was asked "Do you really want to disable this font?" Kinda spooky, that.
So I'm thinking I have corruption problems. Until I can fix 'em, I've switched Safari's default to non-problematic fonts.
This hasn't been the Big Solution we're all looking for, but perhaps a Mac genius can use this bit of info to solve all our problems and earn our undying admiration and lifelong respect.
    Anyone?

Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/Extensions.plist
Click Go then move the  Extensions.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • HT5655 I followed all the instructions to update Flash Player, but the installation fails at around 90%, it says that there is an Application running (Safari) bit I actually close all Apps. already. can someone help me with this issue ?? Thanks

I have followed the instructions to update Flash Player, the Installation Fails at about 90%, it says that there is an Application running (Safari) and it says to close all the apps. and start again ... but I already close all the Applications ... none is running ... can someone help me with this issue ??? Thanks ...

    Dear Dominic
Brilliant reply. Simple English. Simple to follow instructions. And it worked immediately, first time.
Why couldn't the Apple and Adobe corporations get their programming right first time? We spend billions of UK pounds and US dollars with them. They reply with incompetent programming such as this, and arrogance to their customers in issuing faulty systems without doing the most rudimentary checks.
Anyway, I certainly shan't be buying another Apple as this is the most unreliable, most incomprehensible, most illogical and downright thoughtless shoddy piece of computer kit which I have ever owned. And all of it is rubbish ~ emails disappear, photos can't be organised properly, spreadsheets don't work, Pages is laborious… the list goes on and on...
But thanks to you Dominic, I have been able to load Adoble Flashj… maybe eyou should get  a job at Apple, and set them all on the right course to how to work simply and correctly with customers.
    Thanks again,
    David

  • How do I run Safari with a proxy on start up by command line?

    Hello,
I am using a piece of software called Sahi to perform automated testing of websites. It uses a local proxy to accomplish this task, so it runs the browser with parameters needed so that that instance of the browser is running with the proxy settings. For some reason it's not correctly setup by default with Safari on the Mac. But it has a configuration file where you can set the command line parameters that it runs the browser with.
So when I use Sahi in its default configuration, it doesn't work because the proxy is not configured, and I get an error ( http://sahi.co.in/forums/discussion/4607/sahi-doesn039t-work-with-safari-5-0-1-o n-macosx )
So I need to set the proxy. When I set the 127.0.0.1:9999 proxy in the System Preferences it works. My question is how do I run Safari so that it provides the proxy settings as a command line option?
This way I can add the command line option to the Sahi configuration file so that it runs Safari properly. I don't want to have the proxy settings system wide because I need other programs to work. I don't want to have the proxy settings set for Safari permanently because I also need to be able to run Safari normally outside of this special context.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

I should mention this is Safari 5.0.1

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

I am running Safari 5.1.7 on 10.6.8 and experiencing frequent freezes and crashes, how do I solve this problem?
    Hal Harris

The best way is to post the crash log next time it crashes. That will contain specific information that will help find the problem. Logs are cryptic but there are people here who can make some sense of them.
I'm running 5.1.7 under 10.6.8 on both my iMac and MacBook Pro and it is completely stable. However I have no extensions installed. Incompatible extensions are a common source of Safari instability

when using apps or running safari my iphone glitches then takes an age to reboot, done a full restore but still getting same problems any ideas

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
If you have tried all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first...
See if there is anything here first to help with your issue...

  • Can't install Safari 4 - 'Another user is running Safari'

I was running the Beta and loved it and want the 4.0 but I'm stuck.
After running the installer I get a continual alert that says words to the affect of 'Safari is being run by another user. Quit all running Safari applications to continue' which won't go away till I shutdown and restart. The installer just stalls and won't go any further. If I force quit every application the Alert keeps popping up till restart.
Any ideas, some old Safari Beta 4 file somewhere I can trash. Unfortuantly I don't have the uninstaller that came with it any longer.

    Hello Paul:
I did not run the BETA Safari 4 (I NEVER use BETA software). I would suggest uninstalling the BETA Safari (that will put you back to Safari 3) and then downloading (again) Safari 4.

  • Import a new service in a non-running zone from global zone

    Hi All,
I have zones implemented in VCS. i need to import a new service in SMF. i can do that in the running node by logging into the zone server directly.
Now i want to know, how can i import this new service in the non running zone (hsoted in other node), so that the service starts automatically during the faile over also.
    Thanks in Advance !!!!

You could do it just as if they were separate systems by using a network tool like RSH/SSH.
If the non-root account has permissions on the full path to to the zone files (that would be unusual), then it could directly copy them there. But normally the root of the zone is set for root only access.
    # zoneadm list -iv
    ID NAME STATUS PATH
    0 global running /
    8 zone1 running /export/zones/zone1
    # ls -ld /export/zones/zone1
    drwx------ 4 root root 512 Jan 10 09:10 /export/zones/zone1
