Non stop whirling arrows on face recognition

Imac 21.5inh OSX10.95 Processor3.06 GHz
Very slow to load iPhoto, then very slow to view events (15 seconds each) The circular icon of two arrows next to face recognition in constant spin . I do not initiate this action. I cannot disengage it.  Very  disappointed with iPhoto. What can I do to remedy?

Thanks for the reply. The whirling arrows have now stopped,   iPhoto 09 Version8.1.2(424),  Time Machine backup. I had used back up to try and retrieve some lost photos. Still couldn't find them but thankfully all else seems back to normal except for the ever so slow loading. It could be to do with the fact that there are seven iPhoto libraries . Would it be safe and possible to get rid of most of them ? I only need to have one library. I don't know how they all came about.

  • PS9 - Face recognition just stopped working

    Hello,
I'm kind of desperate, I just installed PS9 on my PC and at first the face recognition feature worked well. Than I realize there was stuff missing in my catalogue (sorry I have the french version) so I recreated a new one. When I try ti use the face recognition app, it does not recognize a single face! I get this message telling me I have not one face in all of my pictures. When I create a tag manually I see the name appear. It does show a square arounf each face on individual photos, but the name is not retained. With several thousand photos, I dont want to do them all manually.
Is there something, anything I can do?
    Please help and thank you.
btw, I'm running on Windows 7, 64 bits.

I have tried this along with editing my shares as recommended on the
community board. Nothing seems to help. While I do not want to would
uninstalling and reinstalling the program fix the problem? If so, are there
files I must manually delete when doing the uninstall?

    I apologize for my English.
Nvidia 3D testing program wheel shots. The face recognition does not start.
If on, the image activator 3D is disturbed and I do not see the image in 3D.
If I try the Games 3D compatible (Left4Dead) activates the 3D in 1080p but the game is jerky as the test image 3D not activate the face recognition.
3D play is to see in 2D photos into 3D but how do I vadere photos in 3D?
If active 3D activator the image quality is poor.
I did set both normal and advanced, but the videos have gost effects especially on the sides.

    Hi
It looks your Qosmio F750-03W PQF75C-03W001 is an Toshiba Canadian model as I found this here:
    http://support.toshiba.ca/support/isg/center/en/index.asp?s1=Notebook&s2=Qosmio&s3=F750&s4=PQF75C-03W001
First of all you should update the BIOS to the latest version (at this time it seems that BIOS 2.0 is the latest one).
    Also update the
    nVidia Display Driver version 8.17.12.9039
    Super-D IC Driver version 1.0.1613.809
Toshiba Blu-ray Disc Player version 1.0.1.299

if 3D stereo effects are not ok use the X-tune to calibrate this.
You are recommended to use this utility to optimize the 3D stereo effects when using the Glasses-Free 3D function for the first time or being unsatisfied with the 3D effects.
To operate the X-Tune utility, follow the steps as described below:
    1. Select the language and optimization mode, and then click OK. There are three optimization modes: Primary, Advanced and Professional. You can choose one based on your own experience.
    2. Sitting about 60cm away from your computer, click Start to continue.
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions on each step.
    4. Use the left or right arrow key on the keyboard to adjust the effect. When you are satisfied with the effect, click Enter and then an information window will appear on the screen. Press the ESC key on the keyboard to cancel the optimization procedure.
    5. Click Finish to close the X-Tune utility.
You said your face recognition does not work properly so uninstall this software. Do this also with the webcam driver/software. After both tools has been uninstalled, clean registry using CCleaner and install both tools again using the newest version.
Reboot and start the X-Tune again to calibrate the 3D effects.
In the Toshiba doc (link posted above) you can find this notice:

  • No face recognition in iPhoto on my iPad 2

Hello, thank you for opening this thread.
Today I uploaded the photo for the first time on to my iPad 2. When I open the photos, there are Photos, Albums, Events, Places, but there is no "Faces."
I searched the discussion board but I could not find an answer how to let iPhoto do the face recognition.
    Could someone please help me?
    Thank you!!

Faces will only show as an option in the Photos app on the iPad if you've synced photos from your Mac which have 'faces' associated with them (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236 : 'iPhoto ’09, you can also add your Faces, Places, and Events to your device.', and the manual 'Events and Faces must first be configured in iPhoto or Aperture on a Mac, then synced to iPad') - i.e. it must be associated with photos prior to syncing them to the iPad.
If you've synced photos with Faces to the iPad and they aren't showing, then try closing the Photos app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with Photos 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Photos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • How does Aperture Face recognition work

Just upgraded to Aperture 3 --- I'm a little baffled by the functionality of the face recognition. Aperture certainly found most (if not all) of the faces in my collection but I thought it was supposed to be able to actually do recognition (to some extent) so that when I associate a certain face with a name, it would automatically find the same face in other photos and mark them.
I am not seeing any evidence that this actually happens --- I just seem to keep getting fed faces along the bottom that I have to name manually, even if it's a very similar picture that was already seen.
    What am I missing?

I've noticed that sometimes (seems like all the time, but I've only done a few imports) when I first import new photos it can take a long time before Aperture decides to search for similar faces.
I can tag a few pics of people in the "Faces View" and then double-click their photo to try to see suggested matches, but watching the "Activity Window" shows no searching for similar faces... I don't know what's stopping it, but it just doesn't seem to even bother searching for quite some time. It's not that it's still detecting faces in the photos (I've checked to see it's finished doing that) — there's nothing in the Activity Window and the CPU usage of Aperture is basically zero. Memory is not full, nothing else is using the CPU, it's just sitting there doing nothing...
And then randomly, suddenly, it seems to remember that it is meant to search for similar faces and does so...
Would be interested to see if others are having similar behaviour, where Aperture just doesn't even bother searching until some event, or some time after importing... Open up the Activity window in Aperture (from the Window menu), double-click on a face in the faces view and see if it starts searching for similar faces... if it's not even searching, then that might explain why you're not being given the ability to match faces. If it is searching, then I guess it's just not finding anything. Also note that you won't get any matches until the search finishes (it can take quite a while to search through the photos for similar faces; likely depends on (and is slowed down by) the number of faces for that person, the number of 'unknown faces', the total number of faces and/or people in your library)

  • Face Recognition Problem in PSE 12

I am having a problem with face recognition with PSE 12/Windows 8.1. It is a new install, at first all went well. I could enter names and they were immediately accepted. As faces repeated recognition was working and I could click the green arrow and it would accept or even click the red x and make another selection as it should be. Then I started having problems when it would come up with the correct face I would click the green arrow and instead of accepting the box would go to "Who is This" and it would take numerous attempts to get the program to accept the name. Next I started having problems just entering names, again instead of accepting it would loop me through the "Who is This" numerous times. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
We sincerely apologize for the problem that you have been facing while using a trackpad with Photoshop Elements 11 & 12 on Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite).
We have been actively working with Apple to resolve this problem as quickly as possible. We're hopeful this will get completely resolved in an upcoming update of Yosemite(MAC 10.10).
In the meanwhile, you have two options to work around this problem:
    1. Option1: Use a mouse instead of the trackpad
    2. Option2: Install a plug-in which should workaround the problem
    Plug-in installation instructions:
    1. Close Photoshop Elements
    2. Download this zip file to a location you can easily find (e.g. your desktop)
    3. Unzip the file, WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin, and move it to the Plug-In folder:
    • For Elements 12 – //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 12/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
    • For Elements 11 - //Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 11/Support Files/Plug-Ins/
You can verify the plug-in is installed by launching the Photoshop Elements Editor and choosing Help > System Info... Scroll to the bottom of the text in the dialog and look for the plug-in name "WhiteWindowWorkaround.plugin".
Note: This plugin is a temporary workaround and should be used until this issue is addressed in Mac OSX 10.10 (Yosemite). Please remove this plugin once the issue is officially resolved by Apple.
If you are using a stylus in conjunction with a trackpad, you might see issues with your trackpad. Workaround in this particular case is to use mouse instead of the trackpad.
    Hope this helps!

  • Just upgraded to iPhoto '11 . . . Don't want face recognition?

Just upgraded and iPhoto '11 is busy doing its face detection trick on my 15GB library.
It estimates about an hour remaining but I suspect it will be much longer.
I don't want face recognition so if I click on "Pause" will that stop the process permanently without any ill effects or is there another way to turn off face detection?

There's no way to disable Faces in iPhoto.
Search on Old Toads posts. He describes a way to lock the db file so that nothing is saved, but frankly, once the initial scan is completed it really makes no difference in the world to using the app. Just ignore it.

  • Performance, stability and usability face recognition

    Hi
I have been testing out the face recognition feature in Lightroom CC and I have some questions/comments
    My hardware setup:
    CPU: i7-5820K
GPU: Geforce GTX 750 Ti, running Benq 3201 UHD display
    RAM: 32 GB DDR4
Disk: 1 500 GB SSD for OS and SW, 1 240 GB SSD for Lightroom catalog, 1 6 TB disk with the photos
I run Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.
I have according to Lightroom 120.000 photos in lightroom, mainly RAW, but also quite many JPG. The photos are organized by year, month, camera on disk. A year as typically from 5.000 to 10.000 photos.
    Performance
    1) It takes days for Lightroom to go through the photos to do face recognition. That is ok, but according to Windows task manager Lightroom seldom use more than 10% CPU, there is little disk access and there is pleny of available RAM. What is the bottleneck?
    2) If I try to handle all the photos together the pc starts lagging and everything goes very SLOW, but still no visable stress on the hardware - still about 10% CPU for Lightroom. It can take minutes to put photos to a named person. If I only take one year at the time the respons times are ok.
    Stability
    1) When I work with all the photos at once Task Manager says "Not Responding" a lot for the Lightroom entry.
    2) The screen goes "white foggy" from time to time indicating that the pc/Lightroom has sever problems
    3) The screen flickers sometimes when it is stressed out.
    4) If I leave it at "All pictures" it is very often inpossible to use it again, I do not get contact with Lightroom, I have to terminate the Lightroom prosess and start again
    5) Other applications works allright, but might lagg when Lightroom is very stressed
    Usability
    1) I thought face recognition would become better and better as it learned from more and more photos. It does not seem that way. It is quite often not helpful at all - you have to do a lot manually
    2) It seems it does not use other photos for face recognition than current folder, that means that when I can not use the root folder due to the performance problems I have to go through the same process again and again
    3) The algoritems does not seem to take time line into account, when trying to find who the person is. I think that is something that is important to to to make it more useful.
I have been waiting for face recognition in Lightroom for many years and so far I am not very pleased.
Anybody that have had nice expirience with face recognition so far?
    Any workarounds?
What do the Lightroom engineers have to say about this?

I agree with all the observations above.  I have a 25,000 photo database, and am running a Dell Precision with 16gb ram.  After people tagging for a while, the screen starts to flicker back and forth between Lightroom and other open apps, or the desktop.  It won't respond until restart or put the computer to sleep & login again.
The face recognition is very poor in comparison to Picasa.  The more faces you identify, the more bizarre and random the suggestions for a match become.  All races, genders and with very few apparent common features.  I would prefer NOT to have thousands of suggested names to sort through.  If the face doesn't match within close parameters, just leave it in "unknown" without suggestions.
I like the way Picasa groups similar faces, then asks "Who is this?"
Auto-complete for people names is maddening.  If you enter a space (don't names have a space between first name & surname?), it apparently resets.  So if I type in John Martin, it wants to auto-complete as John Martin Smith. (John Martin & Martin Smith being two DIFFERENT individuals already identified).  I already have 10 men named David in my file.  As soon as I hit the space, (assuming no one has his last name as a first name), auto-complete DOESN'T work at all.  So my husband's name, (a very common first name) has to be typed in its entirety each time.  Picasa doesn't have a problem with spaces...
I have a huge collection of magazine clippings and sewing patterns.  I would like a way to exclude certain folders from the face search.  I don't even want to see those faces.
I'm stunned by the huge number of non-human things identified as faces.  Once in a great while, I can see why... but I never had this problem in Picasa.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Lightroom, but don't think this feature is up to snuff, at all, no way, no how.

  • Face recognition and places

wouldn’t be nice if also aperture could do also “face recognition” + “place” . some features are useless for professional business but some could make my work easier.

    Hi schalliol,
I am not disagreeing with you - and I will use these features too and really look forward to Aperture 3.0 or whatever comes next as much as anyone. I just meant that we need to be realistic about the capabilities of face recognition in a "pro environment" - i.e. you wouldn't want the grandma to be identified as the bride, just because she wore similar glasses and her haircolour happened to match the bride's on the day... All I am saying is that it is not difficult to quickly tag people with keyword bar presets "manually" - if a face detection helps here by doing the "obvious" ones by itself - awesome - but it needs to be configurable so that a group shot or a difficult one (smaller "head" in the picture/background people) are not mis-matched etc.
Note: I have not yet played with iPhoto09 so I should probably not write all these speculative things anyways and just await the final product, I rest assured the Aperture team is aware of all these things and will come out with some really nice new features.
My second point was that many of us are waiting for slightly more critical things - i.e. selective editing, better sharpening & smoothing, non-destructive effects/filters etc. - whereas the face-recognition is a "nice to have" thing rather than a make or break - as it can obviously be accomplished by keywording in the traditional way already - manipulating an area of an image with Capture NX's or Nik's Viveza precision is still not possible by contrast, at least not in an Aperture-only and non-destructive way (technically it is non-destructive to your original image of course, but every change takes up space by creating a "full image" copy.
It will all come to us eventually - they sure got the resources to create world-class products.

  • Face recognition endless

ML and IPhoto: Face recognition is working endless since 2 days! Due to that drag and drop pictures in albums is not possible anymore. Tried rebuilding Library etc. but no success. Tried deleting faces.db but still no success. Face recognition is still running even faces are all finished.

So you rebuilt with iPhoto's own tools? If they fail then my next step would be to download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • PSE11 Face Recognition Window Disapears

I recently upgraded from PSE8 to PSE11.  I am trying to use face regonition to tag the people in my photos.  There are only a few photos with people tagged in them that I did manually.  Most photos are newly imported from camera, but some where converted over from PSE8.  When I run "add people" on all media, it prepares the files for a few seconds and then tells me "people recognition supports photos only.  your selection includes invalid items which will be skipped."  I say OK to this, a window flashes on the screen and dissapears, and then nothing happens.  I also try to "add people" on smaller folders, but it says there are "no new people found in your selection" although none of the photos are tagged yet.  An ideas on how to fix this?

Please go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Elements Organizer\11.0\Organizer on Win and ~/library/App Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/11.0/Organizer on MAC and delete the following files.
    psa.prf
    status.dar
Now relaunch Organizer and run face recognition. This should work fine.
    Thanks
