Non Traditional Setup

My company has a 50 inch TV for network monitoring.
We are very security aware, and do not allow any type of radio (AM/FM/Extra), WiFi, or BlueTooth in our secure area. The company also does not allow PCs in this area for the same reason.  This is because electronic information can only go from "in to out," and not the other way.
Were looking for a system which will have a DVD player to be connected to the 50 Inch TV, the ability to play MP3s on home-made CDs, four speakers and cable for a room roughly the size of a high school class room.
However, NO RADIO, WIFI, BLUETOOTH or PC based system.
Can anyone suggest a solution???
Thanks.

Alright here's what you'll need for everything to work the way you want:
50" monitor
speakers
speaker wire
DVD player (any will work, TV size doesn't matter)
a 4 channel amp (different then the receiver, there is no processing going on, it is just power)
a stereo mini to RCA cable (for the mp3 player to play into the amp)
This should allow you to do everything that you want without any wireless, blue tooth, or AM/FM in the room at all. The one catch is whatever store you go to as far as bestbuy is concerned will need to have a Magnolia Home Theater section so you can get the amp. You can find some amps online, you'll just need to make sure it has connections for at least four speakers, if you use a two channel for instance you might want to get a speaker selector so you can run more then just the two channels. a two channel amp would look like this: http://speakercraft.com/#Products:135:BB275%202-Channel%20Amplifier
Look at that a sales person can help ha, hope that makes sense as far as how it would all work, if not message me and I can go into more detail

Is your email address using strange letters (non Roman)?  You might try creating an alias email address using normal letters.  See link...

  • Consequences of using non-traditional SMTP ports

I'm at an educational institution, and I'm trying to set up a server (Xserve with Mac OS X 10.5.4 Server) within the institution firewall. However, the traditional SMTP (25,587) and IMAP (143,993) ports are blocked so I can't set my mail server to use any of them. The institution has agreed to open up some other ports (22,115,623). Are there any consequences to setting up our mail server using one of these ports?

Could you use port forwarding? sure, although that's overkill if you can put a machine up on the outside of the firewall - just setup a mail server on the outside that knows to forward mail to a port number that the network admins will allow in.
Set your DNS so that your domain's mail goes to the machine on the outside. This machine accepts the mail and forwards it to whatever port number you define on your internal machine. It adds an extra hop in the mail loop but it's entirely feasible, e.g.:
    Remote_domain -> outside_machine:25 -> firewall -> inside_machine:623
No remote user needs to know about your inside machine running on a different port number since they only need to talk to the outside_machine that's listening on the standard port.
Now, should you do this? I can't say but I'm sure it's going to fall into the realm of network abuse and the network admins might not appreciate it. That's your call.

  • Using IDE3 in non-RAID setup

    Hi
I have a few questions regarding my setup which I hope some users who have or have had the same configuration can answer for me?  I know that this post may turn out to be a bit long but I really would appreciate some help and answers from users who have been down this road please.
    System:
MSI 875P Neo FIS2R (no overclocking)
    Intel 2.40C Ghz P4 (800Mhz)
    BIOS 1.7
    Nvidia FX5200 AGP 8x
    LG CDRW on IDE1 (Master)
    LG DVD on IDE1 (Slave)
    IDE2 - Nothing installed
    Maxtor 20GB ATA133 on IDE3 (Master - Non-RAID)
    Maxtor 80GB ATA133 on IDE3 (Slave)
With thanks to "mdc007", I have just setup my two Maxtor drives which were previously installed on IDE1, on IDE3 as master and slave, using the following method:
Enabled Promise controller in BIOS, setup Promise IDE "as S-ATA", boot into XP, install S-ATA drivers from Device Manager and reboot.  Made sure drivers were installed.  Turned off computerm connected Maxtor hard drives to IDE3 and turn on computer.  enter BIOS and select Maxtor master drive as first boot device and then F10 to save and exit.
Everything worked just fine but I noticed on the POST screen that I had 1st IDE master/slave (CDRW/DVD), 2nd IDE master/slave (not installed), 3rd IDE master/slave (not installed), 4th IDE master/slave.
The drives on IDE3 are shown in Device Manager and I have a SCSI RAID Promise 378 S-ATA in Device Manager.  The drives also appear to be opering correctly in XP.
Q:  As my hard drives are on IDE3, why are they not shown on the POST screen?
(Note - both drives were shown on the next screen with UDMA6)
Q:  Also in the mainboard BIOS, the drives are not shown connected to IDE3.  Why?  I tried choosing "AUTO" but that made no difference.
Q:  With reference to the HDD LED, I was aware that the LED did not work with S-ATA drives on the Promise Controller at the moment but, although the HDD LED is on during POST, it shows no activity when booting into to XP or once on the desktop.  Is this correct?
Q:  With reference to the Intel IAA and IAA RAID latest software versions, I tried installing these and got a message which said something like "no compatible devices - software not supported on this chipset".  Has anyone got this software to install or am I installing the incorrect version?
Q:  I downloaded the correct version of IAA and I can't understand why it won't install so, which chipset is the message referring to?
Q:  I have seen mention of the Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller, which my 875P has, and also the Intel 82801ER.  Which board has the 82801ER?
Q:  With reference to the "On chip ATA(s) Operate Mode" in the BIOS, with my setup as shown above, I would appreciate advice from users who have this setup working ok, about which options are best to enable/disable in this area:
    * Mode:  Legacy or Native?
    * ATA Configuration:  Disabled/P-ATA only/S-ATA only/P-ATA + S-ATA/Both
    * S-ATA Keep  enabled: Yes/No
    * P-ATA Keep enabled:  Yes/No?
    * P-ATA Channel Selection:  Primary/Secondary/Both?
    * Combined Mode Option:  P-ATA 1st Channel/S-ATA st Channel?
(this option depends on what other options you have choen above)
    * S-ATA Ports Definition:  PO-1st / P1-2nd - PO-2nd / P1-1st
                                          PO-3rd / P1-4th - PO-4th / P1-3rd
(this option also depends on what other options you have chsoen above)
Q:  With reference to PNP/PNP Configuration Option in the BIOS, with my new setup, should PCI IDE Bus Mastering be enabled?
BTW, about an hour after running my drives from IDE, I attempted to install the new drivers for the WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller (from v1.00.16 to v1.00.29) and after reboot, the pc just kept rebooting and i had to choose "last known good configuration" and then once in windows, I got my first 'blue screen' with a message something like "IRQ less or equal to" etc, etc.  Don't know if that relevant or not?
    Regards

To answer a few of your questions,
Reason you can't see the devices on the Promise controller in the Bios is because the Promise controller has its own separate Bios(that's the one you get into by hitting control-F. The only link the main Bios has to it is the 1 setting(disabled, SATA, Raid). Also, you'll see the Promise devices listed in the boot devices setting although with unusual prefixes like "BBS Device 0" or something like that.
Note that the 1st-4th channels listed in the standard Cmos Features are for the Intel controller only(IE: 2IDE channels + 2SATA channels)
I know that the HDD light DOES NOT work for ANY SATA devices. I haven't used my IDE3 yet but it sounds like it doesn't work for that either. As far as I know, there is no work-around for this. Unbelievable, isn't it?
    For your setup:
    Native Mode for WinXP
Pata Only (you're not using the SATA's)
Keep SATA enabled: Yes(only if you are overclocking and can't lock AGP/PCI frequency. Don't know why, but this has worked for many of us.)
Pata enabled should be greyed out with above settings.
Pata channels: Just primary if that's all you're using but "both" would work too.
    Combined Mode: greyed out
SATA ports def: greyed out or leave default.
Not 100% sure on your other questions but I think IAA is not required on this board and IAA-Raid version will only install if you have the controller configured for Raid in the Bios. I don't think you need either with your setup. I don't have either installed atm.
I'm not sure of the difference between the 82801EB & ER but device manager lists all the 82801EB devices for me and everything seems fine.
Hope that helps out a little.
Didn't see Danny's post above when I wrote this but I pretty much agree with everything. I have Bus Mastering on but only because it sounded like a good thing   and everything seems fine with it on. (I think I read somewhere that it speed up data transfers when you're running in DOS-IE: Booting Ghost or Drive Image etc off the CD/Floppy). Never really tested though.

  • Connecting to 192.168.1.1 for checking router settings online brings non-English setup?

Bought a new WRT54G vers 6 router to replace a version 3 that died on us recently, and we have had many issues with SBC Global DSL connectivity, but when I go to the 192.168.1.1 site, it isn't in English, but in Italian or Spanish..
I can guess on some issues, but I never had a choice to pick what language this router page setup area would be in. Any ideas?
I could use some help here.

You need to download the correct firmware and upgrade or use tftp.exe.

  • Non-Administrator setup

    Hi,
We are running Netware 5.1 SP8, and Zen3.2. Currently our users are all in
the Administrators group, as this in the past made thiungs easier for us,
however as the department has got bigger it is now more of a hinderence as
users have complete control and regually manage to install applications that
affect the performance of the machines.
I have created a user who is not in the Administrators group, and I can log
in as that user, however when I try and launch some applications that
install from Zen, they fail with a "cannot find network path" error, I have
found the "run as secure/unsecure system user" and tried both of those and
neither seem to work. (The application in question is an msi, that is
installed by running setup, with apropreate flags to make it install
    silently).
We do not currently have our workstations registered in the NDS, though I
eventually intend to, if this affects the problem ?
Additionally does anyone know of a utility that will log program execution
so that we can at least find out who is installing stuff and go and stomp on
    them :)
    Thanks.
    Phill.

You can use workstation groups, but take note that by default workstation
groups are not enabled for reading of app associations.
Check the Launcher Configuration tab in C1 to enable this.

  • Non intrelace setup for PAL

hello, I'm new to whole mac environment, switched to Final Cut Studio a week ago. And I got big problem. For 99% of my footage I work in progressive mode. I use AJA Kona3 to capture from digital Beta, I got a bit of problem with fields. I capture using PAL preset - its 625i25 ( 720x576 ) - Aspect CCIR 601. It grabs frames as full ( not interlaced ). But still on the timeline they are set as interlaced with Upper fields. and I get jiggy edges, so I have to change properties in every shot from Upper to None. Then it looks ok. I know I'm doing something wrong - just cant put my finger on it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Pawel

    wow, lightning fast response,
The problem is that I cant use anything else then 625i25 - thats how AJA describes it.
This is how I got A/V settings set up
    Sequence preset :
Frame size : 720x576 CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4) - I use non square pixels for every comp
Pixel Aspect Ratio: PAL - CCIR 601(720x576)
    Field Dominance: NONE
    Editing Timebase: 25
    QT video Settings
    Compressor: Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
    Capture Preset
    Frame size : 720x576 CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4)
    QT video settings
    digitizer: Aja 8-bit Digitizer
input: 625i25 (720x576) - i cant make new presets ( and in that resolution i got only 625i25
in Kona3 Control Panel i got 625i25 set as Primary ( Native ) format. and again I don't have 625p25 to pick.

  • Revert to non-custom setup?

I have a 10.5.1 OS X Server install, upgraded from a 10.4 install, and because of some previous customization, I can no longer use the simple configuration wizard.
Is there any way (other than a complete reinstall from scratch) of getting back to a state where I can use the easy configuration tools?

    I Diff wrote:
my backups are on a remote nas drive is this a problem?
Possibly. Time Machine is guaranteed to work with a Time Capsule, an external hard disk connected to it, or a mounted internal or external volume on the source Mac. NAS devices are supported but there a lot of caveats.
From OS X Mountain Lion: Disks you can use with Time Machine
"If your backup disk is on a network, the network server must use Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing, and both your computer, and the networked backup disk, should have Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later. The AFP disk must also be “mounted” (available to your computer)."
Since only a Mac can run OS X, what the above means to me is that the NAS must essentially be a Mac.

  • User server setup configuration questions

Let me start by saying that I am starting my first position as a network administrator. I am in charge of setting up our network users, VPN, and file sharing system; all having no more experience doing this than a 10.6 Server class I took 7 months ago. That said, I am very green at all this but need to be able to quickly find my bearings.
I am trying to set up a Mac Mini system that would allow multiple non-iOS mobile devices (around 15-20) to remotely log in to that system to run desktop applications. Because of my NDA, I cannot go into much detail about the devices connecting to the server, but I know that I can remotely log in with the device, I just cannot figure out how to set up the Mini.
I have tested using Lion's built in per-user screen sharing implementation which has worked well for the few Macs that I have simultaneously logged in with, but I am unsure as to how stable this setup will be, especially for the 15-20 systems I plan to be connecting to this user hub.
Does anyone have any insight as to how this could be most effectively accomplished? I am not above using 3rd party software and my employer has stated that we can go with a more traditional setup if needed (he would just prefer this setup as it "looks cooler").

  • Moving my non standard library

    Dear friends,
I hope you'll be patient enough to bear with my question.
My music files are all stored on my iMac internal disk in a /Users/Bob/Music/rja directory with its own internal artist/album/tracks structure.
In my iTunes Preferences->Advanced, my music library is set to /Users/Bob/Music/rja2014 and NEITHER keep itunes organized nor copy files to iTunes media folder are checked.
Everything works beautifully, my metadata is now in good shape, artwork etc.
I am now in the need of moving this music to my external firewire storage and I am not sure how to go about it because of this non standard setup.
Any guidance would be receive with gratitude !
OS is Mavericks and iTunes is 11.1.5 (5)
    Thank you in advance.
    Robert

Because you manually manage music it won't be easy.  If you let iTunes manage your media then you could use iTunes' consolidate feature to move your files to a different drive and have it keep track of them.  If you were moving them to the same drive and manually manage then iTunes will keep track of them.  Moving them to a different drive means all your links will break and thrre's no way to stop it really.  "Moving" to a different drive is really copying and deleting.
Two options.  One is to copy them to a different drive, then re-add them to a new iTunes library.  Yes, yes, I hear you fuss, but for some who only have smart playlists and don't care about date added and ratings it works perfectly fine.  The smart playlists repopulate everything automatically and as long as you use tagged media most of the metadata travels with the files.
Another is to move the files, then use a text editor to search and replace the location information for all the tracks in the .xml version of the library file.  Use the .xml version to generate a new previous library with the changed information.  You will still lose some information because the .xml does not 100% duplicate information stored in the .itl file and only iTunes can open that.  If there is absolutely mission-critical information, using Applescripts you can try storing it in some non-standard location such as the comment field, then try to re-create things.  E.g. Make a playlist with all your 5-star ratings files, copy the playlist over to the new library, then use that playlist as a basis for assigning 5 stars to all the items in playlist in the new library.

  • Laptop upgrade - low budget disk setup

    Hi,
I have read many great posts in this forum about this topic (especially about disk setup byHarm Millaard ). However, I feel a bit overwhelmed with all the data. My laptop is quite old and weak (maybe too weak) for Premiere Pro/After Effects in terms of usability. Before I start investing in new PC, I would like to give my current one a try. I am wondering if proper disk setup (scratch disk) would make a difference.
My budget would allow me to choose one of the below options:
a)one external ~128 GB SSD drive (USB 3 or eSATA),
b)one 7200 rpm external HDD (USB 3 or eSATA), eventually TWO
c)other disk setup suggestions within such budget?
    d)other non-disk setup suggestions?
I produce 1080p videos, up to ~5 minutes duration.
    My current laptop specs:
    Dell Studio 1555
Processor: Core 2 Duo 2,4 GHz
    RAM: 4GB
1 HDD: 500 GB 7200 rpm 16 mb cache sata
1 external 1TB 5200 rpm HDD USB 3 (I use it for backup at the moment)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512 MB
    eSATA
USB 3 (will use a epxress card with USB 3)
    Thanks in advance,
    Kamil

....when I first started...trying to edit HD content with PPro CS4, I had a laptop like yours. At the time, I didnt know ANYTHING and foolishly BELIEVED the "minimum requirements" listed by Adobe to use PPro. I wound up pulling my hair out as NOTHING would work...EVERYTHING froze up. Then, I started reading HERE on this forum posts by Harm Millard, Bill Gherke, and others about what REALLY was needed to run this professional level software.Temporarily, I discovered I could " transcode" the highly compressed ORIGINAL clips into another codec that the laptop could edit. This is something you can try with the free Cineform codec, available at GoPro website.
However, your machine is TERMINAL....a remnant of the past...you need to take it to a FIRING RANGE and yell PULL as you throw it into the air and witness its destruction via a loud shotgun blast !!! What you want is to edit NATIVELY the original footage in an easy manner. PPro has since improved GREATLY...now, its entirely 64 bit and has MANY improvements that have improved performance SIGNIFICANTLY.
You are going to need an i7 machine that is hyperthreaded, that runs over 3 Ghz, that has 32 GB system memory, that has a good NVidia graphics card,7xx series,or, better. Then, fast storage is a great help with performance. Using ONE quality SSD for OS, programs and pagefile is a MUST. Windows 8.1 is BEST because it does NOT have the memory limit of Windows 7 Home premium of 16GB, and HAS better support for USB 3 devices. Just get a new machine ...you can do FINE with a Haswell laptop with memory maxxed out and Crucial M550 SSDs in it,( 2 drive bays)...AND the 7xx series, ( or better), mobile NVidia GPU.
Or, build a new Haswell E based desktop machine....the mid- level CPU is affordable with great 6 core performance.

  • Optimum HD setup for Server on Mac Pro

We are currently running Tiger Server on a Dual 2 G5 and are preparing to migrate to Leopard Server on a new 8-core Mac Pro (I wanted an Xserve, but given the tight purse strings lately, will happily settle for the Mac Pro!!). I will be doing a clean install and then migrating settings, accounts, etc. over to the new machine. I've been trying to figure out the best hard drive setup, but have quickly become confused by the overwhelming abundance of (and occasionally conflicting) recommendations out there.
I've seen some who swear by a RAID 1+0 set up {two sets of mirrored drives that are then striped...or is it a set of striped drives that are then mirrored?!? You can see my dilemma...}, while others swear off of such a setup; lots of STRONG recommendations in favor of a small OS disk and second data disk (perhaps a solid state drive for the OS and a regular drive for the data?); even recommendations for multiple drives with 2 partitions that are RAIDed in ways that made my eyes bleed just trying to figure them out.
Bottom line: what would you recommend hard drive wise for a Mac Pro that's going to be a primary server for a small private school? Assume anything is possible (within reason--obviously a 16 bay external RAID is out of the question), and, if possible, include specific drive recommendations (I've seen LOTS of posts steering me as far away from Seagate as I can get because of high failure rates / firmware issues...any thoughts on the WD Caviar Black vs. the WD RE3 Enterprise?).
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

There are so many conflicting recommendations because there are so many valid configurations. Not every option is right for every case, and you need to consider your own use case to determine the best option.
    Let's start off with:
I've seen some who swear by a RAID 1+0 set up {two sets of mirrored drives that are then striped...or is it a set of striped drives that are then mirrored?
RAID 1+0 is a series of mirrored sets that are striped together. This contrasts with RAID 0+1 which is sets of striped disks that are mirrored. The difference is subtle but there are slight differences in fault tolerance and performance in a degraded state (e.g. when one disk has failed).
lots of STRONG recommendations in favor of a small OS disk and second data disk
That is sometimes preferred, although it does depend, again, on usage pattern. If you expect to have a lot of data access then this can be advantageous.
Bottom line: what would you recommend hard drive wise for a Mac Pro that's going to be a primary server for a small private school
    A 'primary server' doing what?
Open Directory authentication: doesn't matter since disk is barely used, so any RAID format is going to work equally well, as well a non-RAID setup with a good backup process.
Home Directories: This may benefit from separating data from system, but you need to consider how much disk space you need.
Network Services (such as DNS, DHCP, NAT, etc.): Doesn't matter since disk is irrelevant for these services.
Other services: You need to be specific about what this server is doing in order to determine the best disk setup.
Assume anything is possible (within reason--obviously a 16 bay external RAID is out of the question
Well since you mention that, what IS the limit?
Most specifically, if you're considering external arrays, what is your goal as far as capacity is concerned? You can get external arrays from 500GB to silly numbers of petabytes depending on how much you need and are prepared to pay.
Also if you're going external, once you go over 4 drives, neither RAID 1+0 nor RAID 0+1 is ideal. You'd more likely be looking at RAID 5 which yields a better usable space ratio.
RAID 0+1 and RAID 1+0 both require 2n disks for n capacity - e.g. to get 2TB of usable space you need 4TB of disks). RAID 5 uses an n+1 ratio, so those same four 1TB disks would result in 3TB of usable space). RAID 5 has an extra processor overhead, though, so generally requires specific hardware such as a RAID controller rather than leaving it up to the OS.
    include specific drive recommendations
If you want to sleep at night, whatever drives Apple supply.
Sure, other drives will work in the Mac Pro, but for sheer reliability in a server, stick with Apple.
If budgets don't stretch to Apple-branded drives then just about any enterprise drive will work fine (don't try to skimp on cheap desktop drives since they're not designed for server loads).
I've seen LOTS of posts steering me as far away from Seagate as I can get because of high failure rates / firmware issues...any thoughts on the WD Caviar Black vs. the WD RE3 Enterprise?
Seagate really screwed up last year with a firmware bug (and, more importantly, how they mis-managed the solution), but that's history now, except for the people who got bit and have long memories. Consequently they would be on my list of vendors if I were buying non-Apple drives.
The Caviar Black is a desktop drive, so nix that. The RE3 would be OK.
Also bear in mind that if you are looking for an external enclosure (so you can handle more data than you can put in the server), many enterprise RAID solutions have their own limitations on drive support so you might need to consider that before you buy any drives.

  • No Library on my HA VMM setup

    Setup: working SCVMM 2012 R2 running on 2 clustered Windows Server 2012 R2... (SRV01 and SRV02)
During installation NO default library was added due to this going to be a HA setup...
I've now configured a file share in the failover clustering running on the SAME 2 servers with cluster shared volume storage, seems to work fine... EXCEPT when I try to add this library in SCVMM. I am then told that SRV02 is already a VMM managment server
and cannot be managed (error 444) and told to uninstall it!
Been googling for a while now, but can't seem to crack this. I get the same error if I try to add just a local share from SRV01. (It says SRV02 cannot be associated even when I try to add a share from SRV01)...
    Error (444)
SRV02 is a VMM management server. A VMM management server cannot be associated with another VMM management server.
    Recommended Action
Uninstall the VMM management server from SRV02 using Add or Remove Programs on SRV02 and try the operation again.

    Hi,
You 're configuring a non-supported setup.
    Configuring the VMM Library
Do not create highly available file shares for the VMM library on the same cluster as a highly available VMM management server installation. VMM does not support this configuration.
