Non-Wireless Capable Router/Modem for Xfinity???

Non-Wireless Capable Router/Modem for Xfinity/Comcast???
Apologies up front since I’m sure I have the terminology wrong, but here’s the situation:
Currently we have a modem (or router or cable-modem, I don’t know the difference) that we rent from Xfinity/Comcast. It is a Model DHG536C, Thomson RCA. I’m pretty sure (but not 100% sure) that this doesn’t have any wireless signal emanating from it. On one side of this box is a cable TV type connector from the outside world, and on the other is an Ethernet-type cable.
The Ethernet-type cable goes from this Comcast box to our Apple Airport Extreme. This is the 6th generation model ME918LL/A 802.11AC.  From the Airport Extreme we send internet access to Apple devices through the house, both via wireless and also cables (USB and Ethernet).
Comcast sent us a “free” replacement modem (we rent the modem from them) a year or two ago so that we could take advantage of some new capabilities they installed on our line (don’t know specifically what they were, but possibly speedier access). However, the install was a bit of a nightmare since the replacement they sent also emitted a wireless signal and there were issues between the wireless emitted between by their new modem versus our Airport Extreme. Comcast is justifiably not renowned for their customer support, and given my lack of computer knowledge, I couldn’t figure it out. So we returned the upgrade modem and stayed with our old one.
We are now getting requests from Comcast to throw out our old modem and install another new one. So here’s the question: can we get a modem that doesn’t emit a wireless signal, that just converts the cable signal from outside the house into an Ethernet cable that we can plug into our Airport Extreme? That way we shouldn’t run into any of the issues we had last time.
And two related questions:
Will this noticeably speed up our internet service? We’re actually happy with what we have right now but perhaps we are just used to it.
Can I buy this new modem on Amazon or from Apple to bypass Comcast (to get rid of the monthly rental fee, and to get something that may have better customer support)?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
And any teaching/education about the proper name for the Comcast “box” without wireless, and our Airport Extreme would be fun as well (router, modem, cable-modem, etc).
Thank you!

So here’s the question: can we get a modem that doesn’t emit a wireless signal, that just converts the cable signal from outside the house into an Ethernet cable that we can plug into our Airport Extreme?
Simple modems do exist, but the question would be whether one of them would be compatible with the Comcast service.  So, you really have a question for Comcast support here.
The question would be whether Comcast can provide a simple modem.........like you have now.......and not a modem/router or gateway type of device, which you really don't need, since you already have a router, and just need a simple modem.
Will this noticeably speed up our internet service? We’re actually happy with what we have right now but perhaps we are just used to it.
Possibly, if you are already paying for faster service, but your current modem is not capable of working at higher speeds.  Again, a question for Comcast support here.
Can I buy this new modem on Amazon or from Apple to bypass Comcast (to get rid of the monthly rental fee, and to get something that may have better customer support)?
Possibly, if Comcast can provide you with a list of modems that will work with their service.  Apple does not make modems, so they would not be able to help on that product.

With the proper connections, my Blu ray player can stream films from Netflix.  How do I go about connecting my Blu ray player to the FiOS equipment?  Has Verizon provided me with both a wireless router and modem?  Is the Verizon wireless router already connected to a modem with a LAN cable?

  • Downgraded Firmware in Wireless AP/Router worked for me with iOS6

Update - Got it working.  I have a Netgear wireless access point WG102, it was running the latest firmaware 5.0.3 NA - I then DOWNGRADED it to firmware 5.0.1 and wa-la it works.
Not sure I like running older firmware, but at least iOS6 will connect to my Wi-Fi (WPA2/PSK) AES!

From what I gathered, about the Y2P Limited Wifi issue, this problem is solved by configurating a router to meet the computer needs. Once done, to fully implement this fix, it is adviced  that you carry this configured router and use it every where you go, like a power cord. When you go to Statbuck in the monrining, be sure they hook up your router and return it when you leave. Alternitively, this can be done at other venues like the airport, hotel, school, work, etc.
I really don't know why people keep wasteing their time. Lenovo has chimed in and said this is a router issue. That said, the aformentioned advice is a formulated fix.  Shall we put an end to thiese topics and get the forum moving again past the wifi issues? Like said many times, this issue has been fixed using the above reccomendation.

  • Is there any way I can get a wireless N router?

Okay so I have the old 25/25 connection and with the current modem/router from verizon I got bout 12 down and like 5 up.
I switched to a 3rd party router a long time ago but I wish to use a verizon modem/router that has a wireless N router
since the verizon router can block internet access because I wish to leave my connection open from now on its not open
yet but I wish to do it but I can't do with this router because I don't know how to block people that's why I have it locked still
and my current NETGEAR WNR2000(I get 25/25 wireless or closer like 23/25). I know its the wireless B+G that was
making my connection slow because I had switched between like 5 verizon routers from them and none difference
because they all were B+G but when I purchased my NETGEAR WNR2000 with B+G+N I got full speed because of the N
technology. So is there any way of asking them if I can get a wireless N router mostly for free?

I just purchased the N router and I'm not really happy with it.
The range is pathetic and there is no dual band. Just a heads up.  I'm wishing I would have purchased an access point and just bridged them together for the wireless.
I assume you are referring to the Actiontec Rev I router.
I am not really concerned about range with the Rev. I router, but it seems to work fine for me at around 70 feet, at the other end of my house.
Yes it is not dual band, but then again, nothing I have seen would make anybody believe that it was dual band. And dual band routers are typically more expensive, and I am sure you know that Verizon is never going to be the cheapest option for purchasing any hardware.
To the Rev. I router performance: I have 25/25 service and I typically get 30/24 performance wireless. For example, I just did the following test wireless to speedtest.net:
    Close enough for me.
I get basically the same speeds when I use the laptop wired.
I don't know about how your router was configured when you received it, but mine was configured for WPA2 but for TKIP/AES encryption, which supports B/G/N speeds, and my N-capable laptop would only connect at G speeds, no matter what I did, and I was unhappy with wireless performance. Eventually I found a topic that talked about changing the encryption to AES only and bingo, my wireless speeds increased dramatically. So you might check to see if you are using AES only and if not changing to that so that you have the "N performance" option.
And one other thing: have you checked for wireless interference? I use inSSIDer (free) to see what other networks are operating around me, and I have found that using Channel 1 works best for me. But if you haven't checked I encourage you to do so, it can make a big difference if you happen to be using a congested channel.

  • 2 wireless+1 router

hi, i have 3 computers at home. 2 of them are wireless(both wireless usb adapter) and one of them is with the modem+router.
recently, both of the wireless goes disconnect after 30mins-1hour(at the same time), but the computer with router stays connected. the main computer display a msg that a cable has been unplugged, and the main computer get disconnected for about 1second(but connects back later).
Once i restart the router+modem, the wireless works fine. but i have to keep restarting router+modem for the other 2 wireless to connect.
can anyone help me troubleshoot the problem? is it the router, modem or wiring fault?

Let's start with what adapters and what router you are using and how they are connected exactly.

  • Using Airport Extreme with Linksys Router/Modem

I was just told that my Mac mini is excruiatingly slow on the internet because I am using a Linksys router with Xfinity and that Airport Extreme will be much faster.  And that I should plug Airport Extreme into the modem.  When I checked, I don't have a separate modem.  My Linksys is a combined router/modem.    What should I do?  Do I plug the Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, or do I get a completely different modem that is only a modem?  And, if I plug Airport Extreme into the Linksys box, how do I configure the network for Airport Extreme, and what else do I need to do?   All help greatlly appreciated...I can barely get onto the Apple website!

When I signed up with Xfinity one of the stipulations was that they would not install a router/modem but only a modem. I had heard of problems with their router/modem and I didn't want to go down that path.
I don't but you mighht be able to get them to change out your router/modem for a modem. I would start there by asking them.

  • Connect Linksys Network Optimizer OGV200 to multi-function router/modem

I'm using a Westell Versalink 7500 multi-function router/modem for DSL Internet service.  I would like to connect the Linksys Network Optimizer OGV200 to improve my VOIP calls. Linksys instructions say insert the OGV200 optimizer between the router and the modem.  Since I'm using a multi-function router/modem unit, how would I connect the OGV200 optimizer to my unit--if at all?

Your iMac does have wireless capability. It does need, however, some wireless network in order to connect to the Internet. It sounds like there are several networks in your area, including one Belkin router that is not encrypted and several other networks that are. I presume that you would know if the Belkin one is yours, and you would have mentioned it. Do not use someone else's network without their permission. In some jurisdictions it is illegal, in others it is merely foolish.
It is impossible to know what Xfinity has given you. Possibly it is only a cable modem, or perhaps it has a router built in. Call them and ask them. If it has a router built in, get them to help you set it up. Note that some tech support people for Internet service providers will resist working with Macs. Be persistent, it is not that different.
If they did not provide a router, you will need to get one. Apple makes the AirPort Extreme base station, the AirPort Express base station and the Time Capsule. Other companies have their own. Be sure you get one that is up to date and has 802.11n capabilities (for the highest speed) and go on from there.
    Best of luck.

  • Does Timecapsule work with the new xfinity wireless gateway 1 modem / router?

My husband hooked up the new xfinity wireless gateway 1 modem / router today and now I can't access my Timecapsule to back up my Mac. Comcast has not been able to help me...and they can't get me back on our old Comcast modem so I can access my Timecapsule, which has worked fine for several years. Can anyone offer a solution?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have no idea why but all of a sudden the Time Capsule backed up my Mac before I had time to do as you suggested...although the back up process was very slow. I'll see if it gets faster over the next few days...will resort to your suggestion if needed. Thanks again!

I'm not familiar with your router but are there any buttons on the front or back of it because sometimes you need to pair the router in order for your PC, laptop, phone or iPad to connect wirelessly with it?
From the routers I have used there are normally two buttons on the front or back (apart from the power button), pressing one of them allows you a few minutes to enter the required password on your iPad. Best look at the instructions for the router.

  • I have bought a TC to extend the range of the wireless network in the house and would like someone to explain the best way to do this? My combine router/modem is supplied by Movistar(in Spain) model Xavi 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports.

What is the best way to extend my wireless network in the house using a TC? I currently use a combined router/modem supplied by Movistar(live in Spain) model XAVI 7958 router ADSL with four ethernet ports. What is the best configuration and can you explain what is meant by bridging and which is best to bridge for signal strenght TC or Xavi modem/router? Have ipads, iphones, apple tv...etc and want a connection them all in the whole house which, not just downstairs, to our wireless network.

You cannot wireless bridge Apple to non-apple router.. so that is out.
The only way you can do this is run ethernet or EOP adapters.. and place the TC in a location where the other apple idevices can reach it.
If you want to repeat wireless with apple routers you have to use another apple router next to the modem.. plugged in an running as an AP.
Basically the TC is the wrong piece of equipment unless you want Time Machine backups.. take it back and buy a universal repeater.. not apple. Or buy more apple stuff like an extreme or express.. one apple router is useless to you without running ethernet.

  • Non-wireless router

does any know ..if Verizon offer a good non-wirelss router ...there Actiontec sucks.. i rather get a my own router to hook up to computor ..Verizon service ok but there equipment is lousy...

A non-wireless router? A few simple ways to get one. First of all, the easiest and quickest way is to disable the Wireless Radio in the ActionTec which of course will restrict you to using Ethernet until you enable the radio again. If the ActionTec is giving you other problems besides the wireless though, the Westell 6100 is really the only other thing offered by Verizon that does not have built-in Wireless capabilities. It is a wired router in itself despite only having a single Ethernet port, though you will need to purchase a switch to be able to use it as a router for more than one PC/device. The routing functions can be disabled, so to speak by simply bridging the modem to your router of choice and setting your router to use PPPoE (which is in most Verizon DSL areas, some areas are DHCP though they aren't very common). Additionally, you could see if Verizon can send you a Westell 6110 if any are around, which are pure bridge modems. Lastly, there's always the option of using your own modem and router combination.

  • Connecting HP 4500 Wireless printer to a new Netgear router/modem

When running setup from the wireless config screen on the printer it finds my new router/modem and then asks for the WPA passphrase. I enter the one that came with the new router and it comes back as a fail. Is there a secret around this or another passphrase it is looking for? I had this printer on my older modem before and it was connected to all PCs in the house but the new one does not want to connect. Thanks

has or are anyone using this TP-Link TD-W8961ND Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router - Version 2 instead of the bt home hub 3?  i need some help because all i get is dropouts after i have set the settings up in the device i use the defualt settings advised in the set up instructions tp link give, ive been told my line adsl may be to slow for this kind of adsl router. so have for now gone back to the hhub 3 here are the results from the nhub3 today. can someone explain this to me G.992.1 Annex A
    ADSL Settings
    VPI/VCI:

The connection speed is missing from those hub3 figures.
G992.1 is ADSL max, up to 8Mb, which is compatible with all routers. Perhaps you have the settings wrong on the TP link one.
There is some information on this page, which should also apply to the 8961ND.
Using the TP-Link TD-W8960N instead of the BT home hub
You can ignore the DNS settings and leave them at default, if you do not want to use OpenDNS.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

Looking for a wireless router/modem that we can configure here, and then just take with us, plug into a wall somewhere, and have the capacity for an event.  In past events we've used the same off-the-shelf wireless routers that we have in the office now, but they start to choke and die at around 40 people. The events are 50-100 people; capacity to 200 would be great.
Assume the wired connection is good enough to handle it.
I'm not sure if the Cisco SMB will have something similar, but maybe even I have to go towards the Enterprise portfolio.
    Any suggestions?

The events are 50-100 people; capacity to 200 would be great.
Cisco Enterprise wireless portfolio are the 1040, 1140, 1250, 1260, 3500i/e model WAP.  You'll may need a WLC if you use the 3500i/e.  Cisco recommends no more than 25 users associated to an AP.  So for about 200 people, you'll need about 8 APs spread apart.
You can start by going to the website:  www.cisco.com/go/wireless.
