None of my word processing applications will open.

My word processing applications will not open, this includes anything from Microsoft Office (powerpoint, excel, word, etc) and Appleworks.
Anytime I try to open these applications I get a message that says "the application quit unexpectedly" and gives me the options of report, ignore, or reopen. When I try to reopen it just gives me the same message.
I have restarted multiple times and have attempted (and failed) a hardware test. I have not attempted to uninstall or reinstall anything because I am scared to mess it up further, I'm not really technologically inclined.
I am running
Mac OS X 10.6.8
Microsoft Office X
Appleworks 6  (I know no one cares about Appleworks but I like it)

You will need to fully uninstall Office, then reinstall it from scratch and from the original distribution media. You will need an AppleWorks installer to reinstall it. I would consider getting a backup drive so you can backup your computer before going further.

  • As I was loading a downloading a word processing application Firefox got "supplanted by "BING" as my homepage, so I need help to return Firefox as my homepage instead of "BING"!

As I was downloading a word processing application I made sure I Unchecked ANY boxes that asked me to change my homepage or my default web browser to something "other than what it already was". But when all was said and done I suddenly have "BING" as my homepage AND default web browser, even after going through my program files and "uninstalling" any programs that have anything to do with "BING or START NOW" which are the ONLY identifying markers on the new page! I have restarted my computer several times and the "new evil page" will not change back to Firefox!

The problem is absolutely not Reader. The problem is that FireFox has stepped in front of Reader and handles all the PDF stuff - wrongly in your case. FireFox is DESIGNED to take over PDF files. But it is not capable of doing IRS forms!
To start with go back to IE for these forms. When you save them to disk DO NOT DOUBLE CLICK ON THEM until this is fixed. Just open the in the normal way - start Adobe Reader and use Open from the File menu.

  • Word processing application on new Macbook Pro?

Most PC's come with some sort of word processing application, like Word, already installed, does a Macbook Pro have one, is so, I can't find it. If not, why not, it has everything else.

It doesn't come pre-installed usually. Check out the iWork suite which has Pages (documents) Numbers (spreadsheets) and Keynote (presentations) software in it - see here for more: http://www.apple.com/iwork/
    30-day free trial - http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

We updated to the new Pages 5.0.1 and now none of our Pages 9 documents will open. Please help.

Since you have Pages '09 documents it is safe to assume that you own Pages '09.  If you bought it from the App Store you should be able to download it again to your new machine.  If you have the install disks, you can install it on the new machine and the find the updater for it.
Or you can go to the Apple Store (make an appointment) and get them to install iWork '09 on your machine.  They will do this for free if you can provide any proof that you owned it on your older machine.  They may do it for free anyway.
As others said, your '09 files should open, so perhaps they were '08 files.  In which case you must open with '09 first.  For this reason Apple will sometimes give you a free version of iWork '09.  If you are not near an Apple Store try phoning them.  No guarantees, but others have reported that Apple sent them a free DVD.
Worse comes to worse, look to buy it on Amazon or eBay, but try Apple first.

Dashboard has stopped working. The App will open, but none of the widgets will function. I've deleted widgets & added new ones, but they also will not work.

I get the "License has stopped working" mesages too.
We have a MacbookPro at home. There are two user-acounts on this mac, one for my wife and one for myself. This way we keep our personal stuff (e-mail, files, settings, dropbox, desktop clutter etc) separated. "Fast user switching" is enabled to easily switch to your personal account.
Now when I open Photoshop I might get the dreaded "License has stopped working" message. This will happen if Photoshop is left open in her account. So I'll have to log into her account, close Photoshop, go back into my own acount and open Photoshop again.
I should not get this message since Photoshop is not part of a particular user account, it is installed in the "Applications" folder which is accesible to all users.
What makes it even more annoying is that I get the "License has stopped working" message on trying to open Photoshop even when Photoshop is closed in in the other acount, but Illustrator is opened.
This makes no sense since we bought Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 as separate programs, not as a part of the Creative Suite.
I did not report this to Adobe yet but it wil do that now.

  • Please help! Shared Library Error... no applications will open!

    Hi. Major issues!!
My computer was unplugged for 2 weeks (renovations). When I set it up in my new office, none of my applications would open! (Microsoft, Adobe, AOL, etc...) Safari is working.
    I get this error message:
The application "Photoshop" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<application><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error:

The application "AppleWorks" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "4<AppleWorks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_SpeechRecognition>"
    Here's what I've tried...
I have tried to install combo update 10.3.9. .. didn't work.
My computer was purchased in 2004... just moved to a new house... do not know where my installation dvd is... so to reboot on that is not an option.
I tried disk repair permissions... didn't work!
I opened my log console to view the crash logs... and it appears a lot has crashed... but I can not understand what any of it means!?!
Can anyone help or offer some advice?
Can anyone understand a crash log if I post it?
Please help!?! Taking an online masters course and this is a major dilemma!
    Thanks,
    Lindsay

    Hi Lindsay,
"Can I get one from a mac store? Does it have to be the original one I used when I purchased my mac?"
No, you can no longer purchase 10.3 Panther disks from Apple Stores, online or otherwise. You may however, be able to purchase replacement disks for your computer (if Mac OS 10.3 were the original install disks that came with your mac) by calling Apple and explaining and having the serial number ready of the computer.
If your installation of 10.3 was an upgrade you can purchase retail copies of 10.3 disks online from many resellers, such as on ebay or sites such as FastMac, but be sure to purchase a retail box set and not upgrade or machine specific disks.
Did you perform all of the steps that Kappy steered you to in Dr. Smoke's FAQ first and your only option left is the Archive and Install?

  • Since downloading 4.0 none of my window vista programs will open so I can't even uninstall the firefox. Help

None of my Microsoft windows will open, I get the message windows explorer stopped working, you need to update windows, which it will not allow me to do, can't get into control panel, or anything. The only thing different I can think I did recently was to upload to 4.0 firefox. I just want to uninstall, and of course can't.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • Word processing application?

After being burned too many times by Microsoft and Lenovo Thinkpad, I bought myself a Macbook PRO. I can't believe how easy Apple makes it. This notebook is incredible. Far more durable than any notebook that I've ever used too.
    THANKS APPLE!
I decided to eliminate Microsoft from my life completely. I will not touch any of their products or softwares EVER AGAIN!
I got iWork, but I am curious to know if there is another option for word processing etc. Is there?

While I use iWork ’09 a lot, I have found Lotus Symphony to be great too. I have noted a link for it for you to check out.

  • What is the word processing application on Snow leopard?

I recently had my old Mac quit and had to replace it with a newer G5 (snow leopard OS 10.6.2) with a 20 inch screen. I was used to using appleworks for my word processing program on my old Mac, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what application to use on my new Mac to replace it! If I hadn't had the Windows for Mac disk to install, I wouldn't know what to use on the new one. I may sound pretty dumb, but this has me stumped.

So, your computer is a G5 now, or have you upgraded to an Intel-based Mac?
Your signature line in your post is confusing - since Snow Leopard 10.6 won't
run on PowerPC-based Mac hardware. And this is the Leopard 10.5 forum area.
Neo Office is a good choice; be sure to check later to find any separate update
download files, if they exist for the version build available.
    • TextWrangler can do more than basic TextEdit, including some features found
on the software writer's higher-end product. See the BareBones Software site:
    http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler/ - TextWrangler runs free.
There are several other options that work well & cost little to nothing.
You may be able to use Google's Documents in some cases.
{If you have the original install disc for AppleWorks, or the software discs that

application from the factory install disc that won't run on a newer Mac, & have
    Pacifist install the extracted files from the desktop of your current Mac...}
    • Pacifist: http://www.charlessoft.com/
If the old *AW 6.2* software is not in use at the time in another Mac, & you own
the disc it resides on, you could probably do that and it should work OK. I've
tried it and you have options in that install, including other language versions.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Which application will open Epson driver download (.sea.hqx file format)?

I am transitioning from my PowerMac G4 (running OS X 3.9) to a new (to me) Powerbook running Tiger (10.4.8). I have been downloading the drivers for my scanners and printer. The .dmg files opened fine, automatically finding the appropriate application for opening the file. But my Epson scanner driver arrived with a .sea.hqx file format (one which I have been able to open with no problem previously on my PowerMac in Panther). When I click on the file on the desktop, I get a message that says, "There is no default application specified to open the document "epson11019.sea.hqx" Then it gives me the 'choose application' button, but when I click on it, I see nothing I recognize for this purpose. How do I get this task done?

    Hello Matt,
Thanks for your time & energy in helping me to solve this problem. A progress report follows:
Just to follow up. It looks like it may be easier to
live with the shortcomings of Expander 11 than try to
downgrade. The procedure I had to use to downgrade
was to remove the Stuffit Expander 11 folder from the
    /Applications folder.
I had already done this, and now have version 10.01 installed.
I'm not sure if Expander 11
installs other files or whether I had files left over
from Expander 10, but I also removed Stuffit related
    files from /Library/CFMSupport and
    /Library/Frameworks.
I couldn't fine either of these files in my Library.
    I downloaded Stuffit Expander
10 directly from the ftp site.
    ftp://ftp.stuffit.com/pub/archive/mac/Stuffit_Expander
    /stuffitexp_1000_xinstall.dmg It should be noted
that this version is PPC only so it would have to run
    under Rosetta on Intel Macs.
Finally, I had to use a cache cleaner before Stuffit
Expander 10 would work properly and not assign either
Script Editor or Automator as the application to open
.sea files. I used Applejack from the single user
mode. There are other, more user friendly cache
    cleaners available.
This user is hardly a techie, so in all cases, I need the most user friendly, reliable application or utility that I am least likely to get myself into further trouble with. So I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on this matter.
I also take it that there really isn't an alternative to Stuffit Expander for opening these files. Too bad! I see on their website that I am not the only one having problems!
So for the moment, I am still up a creek without a paddle. Any further suggestions are appreciated!

  • I updated to 10.9.4 yesterday (July 3) now none of my Microsoft applications will open.  Error states they are not comparable with software.  Any ideas?

The following is the error that pops up when I try to open any Microsoft file or application:
Check with the developer to make sure Microsoft Excel works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS

Make sure you are fully updated to 14.4.3.
Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.4.3 Update (requires 14.1.0 or newer)

This last update might require you to enter your CD Key to activate your copy of Office again.
Running the combo updater will fix odd issues like this. Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Run Font Book to validate your fonts. When Mavericks was first relesed, this helped some users with this issue.
How to use Font Book to validate fonts
      1. Open Font Book in your Applications folder.
      2. Select All Fonts.
      3. Now click in the list of fonts and select all (Edit > Select All).
      4. Under File in the Menu bar, select Validate Fonts.
      5. Duplicate fonts will be marked with either the yellow badge or a black dot.
      6. Select to remove or delete duplicates.*
      7. Delete font caches **
      8. Restart your computer
    * Step 6 – remove or delete duplicates is where the tricky part comes in. You can select to let Font Book disable or remove duplicates, but I’ve found that it removes the one you have not been using rather than selecting the best option. See Font Management in OS X, by Kurt Lang, for more info on fonts.

  • CC applications will open in Mavericks, but actual project files crash them

Haven't seen this one exactly yet here, though I get the feeling the answer will be the same:  solution coming soon, which is actually fine.  But FYI:
I am working on the most recent Mac Pro upgraded with two Nvidia graphics cards including a modified FX 580 with an external power supply, so not an off-the-shelf system, though it has worked up til now.
I installed Mavericks, and the 12.0.1 AE update, and the latest CUDA software.  I don't know if I have the latest-latest Nvidia driver because when I try to install it, its installer isn't compatible with Mavericks.  But every other program is still running so I think it's operational.
Like the headline says, the programs open just fine, but when I try to open my film edit in Premiere Pro or any effects shots in AE, the programs crash.  AE just quits uncerimoniously; PP gives me that "sorry a serious error has occurred" window you have to click.
Any advice or 12.1 updates would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I emailed my logs to Mark Mapes, who then emailed me the below, which solved the problem.
I removed both Denoiser and Quicklooks from Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore
Don't know which one it was but either way I am up and running again.
    Thanks...
    Richard
So it looks like PPRO is crashing on loading some effects from AE.
After Effects, in turn, is balking at the point where it’s initializing some the Red Giant denoiser plug-in. Another user reported recently that removing Red Giant’s Quicklooks from the Common folder resolved a crash on Mavericks. (http://forums.adobe.com/message/5795188#5795188
    , post #71)
(okay THIS is the "CORRECT" post but I thought it would post this under Mark's and didn't want to award precious points to myself for his solving it...)

Did you restart your computer after repairing permissions?
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
