NOOB FIRST BUILD ADVICE LIST INCLUDED COMPATIBILITY

Hello,
I’m looking to take a leap and build my own computer for the first time using top components. Any advice, tips, criticisms would be appreciated.
I need to know if the list below will work together. Am I missing anything? Have I chosen something that is really not needed?
I am a photographer and deal with mass amounts of photos, videos, music etc. I also want to play games occasionally, or watch a DVD.
I am starting from scratch, bringing no parts from other places. All new.
How does the following combination stack up? Thank you in advance for any help to the above questions and your time.

My suggestion would be to build two separate PCs - one for editing, the other for games. This is because (as Harm Millaard mentioned) games have absolutely no place at all whatsoever in an editing system because many games install unnecessary and performance-degrading bloatware that could make that ultra-fast system run as slow as or slower than the average six-year-old PC with one-fourth as much RAM.
But if you can't afford (or don't have enough room for) a second PC, you'll have to make compromises. Which is more important? Editing/rendering/encoding performance or gaming performance?
With that said, what you have is a bit of a "penny wise, pound foolish" type of build. Especially when the motherboard and CPU combo is almost as expensive as some X79 and i7-3930K combos. The P8Z77-V Deluxe costs almost $300 by itself, and doesn't perform all that much better (nor do they overclock all that much higher) than far cheaper ($150-ish) Z77 motherboards. And 16GB of RAM just isn't quite enough total RAM for Premiere Pro CS6; you need 24GB or 32GB for CS6 to run at its best. In fact, I had tested CS6 on my main i7-2600K system with a GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 with 1.25GB of VRAM with the system equipped with 16GB and again with 24GB (the latter adding two 4GB DIMMs to the existing two 8GB DIMMs): Adding that extra 8GB of RAM (making it 24GB) actually improved the MPEG-2 DVD performance in PPBM5 by roughly 40 seconds. Instead of 113 seconds with 16GB, I achieved a result of 73 seconds with 24GB.

  • Seeking advice on my first build, $3000 budget, please critique. Thanks!

    Hey all,
    Been lurking around here for some time now and I must say it's been interesting. A bit of background before we get to the good part: I'm a freelance website designer (one that does a lot of graphic design), so my workhorses are Ps and Ai, but lately I've been getting more and more freelance film work. I've reached a crossroads as my current system struggles to handle the load in Pr, especially in AE. I've decided to build a kickass system that will hopefully improve my workflow enough to take me more down the film path (in addition to dominating my Ps and Ai needs). This will be my first build, so all advice is welcome and much appreciated. I've tried pretty hard to do some research before posting, and here's what I've come up with:
    The Build:
    Category
    My Choice
    Price($USD)
    Comments
    CPU
    Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor
    569.99
    Is it worth waiting until the Ivy Bridge 4930K comes out? Looks like that won't be till the fall..
    GPU
    EVGA 04G-P4-3687-KR GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ w/Backplate 4GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
    589.99
    Would you choose the 680 over the 580?
    mobo
    ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
    324.99
    I honestly know nothing about mobos.. should I be concerned that this is from 2011? Is this overkill?
    RAM
    Kingston 64GB (4 x 16GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ECC Registered Server Memory DR x4 Model
    519.99
    Is Kingston a good brand? This seems like quite a deal.
    disks
    1x Samsung Pro 840 series 128GB SSD, 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 3TB 7200 RPM RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
    420.97
    SSD for OS&programs, 1HDD for media, 1HDD for cache and exports. This is the area I'm thinking I might improve on as I'm a bit under budget. What additional disks/purposes do you recommend? Seems like I shouldn't bother with RAID unless I get more disks.
    PSU
    CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC
    129.99
    Seems like a good PSU/cooling unit. Don't know much here though.
    Case
    Fractal Design Define XL R2 FD-CA-DEF-XL-R2-BL Black Pearl Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
    149.99
    I like that this has 2 audio jacks. Has 8 internal 3.5'' drive bays, 4 external 5.25'' drive bays, and 9 "expansion slots", whatever those are. It does not mention 2.5'' bays, so I assume it has none. Does that mean I won't be able to mount my SSD? Should I go with a different case for that reason?
    Total:
    2689.91
    So I'm a bit under budget. What do you think would be the best components to upgrade?
    I'm thinking I might get 3 more Barracuda 3TBs (or maybe smaller to cut the cost a bit), put 4 of them in RAID3 for media, keep the leftover drive for exports and scratch. Does that sound like a good idea? If I did this, I think I would also get this controller: Areca ARC-1213-4X PCI-Express 2.0 x8 Low Profile SATA / SAS 4-Port PCIe 2.0 External SAS/SATA RAID Controller. Coming in at 389.99, it's not cheap, but I am willing to go a bit over budget if it will make a big enough difference. With this RAID setup, I'd be looking at around $3300, which is pretty much my max. Thanks in advance for your help!!
    EDIT: Forgot to mention that I will be running CS5.5, probably going to go for the cloud upon release of CS???

    Mkudisch, it looks like a great PC you're going to build, it looks pretty much like the one i've built a couple months ago, I'm not a master pc builder but I would like to give you a little advice about the componenets:
    CPU: Great choice, I have the same cpu.
    GPU: it looks like a great gpu, just one thing if you plan to overclock it you should buy one with better airflow (at least 2 fans), I have an asus gtx 670 4 gb.
    MOBO: great choice, probably you already now it, it is a 2011 model but if your saying it because the name says LGA 2011 it means that it is socket 2011 the one for sandy bridge-e cpus, (I have a P9X79 WS mobo)
    RAM: probably I'm wrong but as far as I know all Asus X79 mobos will only take 8gbs sticks per slot and not 16 gbs ones, you should probably look for 8x8gbs quad channel, I have G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 8X8gbs and they're great, if you want search for any other brand model but first check if you mobo will take 16gbs sticks per slot.
    Disks: great SSD, I've heard a lot of great things about samsung 840 PRO.
    PSU: I think you should consider at least a 1000W PSU, in case you want to add another gpu or more hdds in the future you will be already covered, Corsair it's a great brand also stay away from any Rosewill PSUs I bought a 1300w lightning series and that piece of crap exploded 30 seconds after turning it on.
    Case: don't know about that case but it looks like a great choice I have a HAF X 942.
    Also you forgot about a CPU cooler, there's a lot of great cpu coolers, I would recommend you Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 that's the one I have (and it's great if you plan to overclock you i7-3930K) just make sure the cpu cooler you buy is compatible with you cpu, if you buy Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 make sure it will fit in you case because that cooler is HUGE!.
    Well that's my advice like I told you before I'm not an expert or anything just another guy like you who built a PC similar to the one you want to build.

  • Camera guy needs help with his first build

    Hello all-
    I work in a video rental house, and I'm sick of renting out $13,000 cameras and $16,000 lens packages all the time and not having the capability to get the gear for free and make my own projects on my own time!  To that end, I'll happily trade any video camera / production knowledge for advice on this build I'm working on.
    I’ve put together this modest $3,000 build list for a Premiere CS5 / After Effects CS5 machine.  This will be my first build, so I’m somewhat new to this, and I’d like to solicit the board’s input on the following questions:
    1)      What do you think of my MOBO / CPU / RAM pairings?  I’m not really married to any of these components, and if I should swap any one of these out for overall performance increases, I’d be happy to.
    2)      How does my drive setup look?  Have I picked any clunkers?
    3)      I’d love to hear any alternate suggestions for 20inch or so monitors in the $150 range, or quality desktop speakers in the $100 range.
    DISK SETUP- $640
                System / Boot disk – 600 GB Western Digital Velociraptor / SATA 6.0 / 10,000 RPM
                Project / Media disk – (2) x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3R / RAID 0 / SATA 3.0 / 7,200 RPM
                Render / Scratch disk – (4) x 500GB Western Digital Caviar blue / RAID 0 / SATA 3.0 / 7,200 RPM
    (MOBO raid only- No hardware RAID card – not in my budget right now)
    GUTS- $1,137
                CPU- i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06 GHz / Noctura NH-D14 CPU cooler
                GPU- Galaxy NVDIA GTX470 1.28 GB
                RAM- 24GB (6 x 4GB) G.SKILL Ripjaw DDR3 1333 / 9-9-9-24
                MOBO – ASUS Rampage III 1366 pin X58
    CASE / POWER - $595
                Case - Silverstone RV02B-W
                PSU – ABS MJ1100-M / 1100 Watt / Single 12v rail
                UPS – Powercom KIN- 2200AP / 2200 VA / 1320 Watts
    HUMAN I/O – $485
                Speakers- Behringer MS16
                Mouse – Kensington Expert Trackball
                Keyboard – Logitech Wireless K340
                Monitors – (2) x Acer G235HAbd 23” / 1920x1080 / 20” or larger / around $150
    Thanks for any input.

    Leo,
    Nice system specification! Like Harm, I don't have much to suggest - only a comment on the keyboard!
    I personally went with the Logitech K800, which is also wireless, after comparing it with the K340 in a store that had both on display. I preferred the feel of this more expensive model and am still very happy with the purchase 6 months later. The K800 also adds backlighting which I love for editing in a dimly lit room.

  • What is Building a List of Used Media?

    Hey there,
    I am capturing around 50 hours of footage off 70 tapes. There's been quite a few breaks in TC and other problems, so I have to re-start the capturing on a regular basia. Now that a lot of the footage is already in the computer, the computer takes a long time to "Build a List of Used Media" before it lets me start capturing. Jus out of curiousity, what is this list, and why does the computer have to build it all the time? Thanks!

    It would seem this web site will answer your question.
    https://m-support.verizonwireless.com/support/terms/products/content_filtering.html
    It makes note of Blackberry devices not compatable see note:
    The service does not work on most Push To Talk devices, any device with a static Internet Protocol address or on search results provided through the Get It Now Search application. The Internet filtering capabilities of the service do not work on phones using WiFi, Mobile Web 1.0, BlackBerry devices or on devices that use Venturi Compression Software, including phones tethered to PCs or PC cards, unless the compression software is turned off. Internet filtering will not work on most advanced devices until you have turned the device off and back on after every Content Filter setting change. The music filtering capabilities of the service do not work on phones with Verizon Music v1.0 software. Call 800-922-0204 or 611 from your handset if you are on a corporate calling plan to determine eligibility to use the service and to activate the service.
    Good Luck

  • Dynamically build parameter list

    I'm after an easy way to dynamically build a list of ALL the defined parameters within the additional PL/SQL code section on a portal report. I then want to use p_arg_names / p_arg_values to retrieve and store the passed values in a table.
    To clarify, the report may have 10 parameters of which say only 5 are passed on a particular run. I need to then populate 10 columns which includes nulls for the parameters not passed. This way parameter values will always be written to the same column.
    I aiming to use this as generic code to apply to several other reports which will write to the same table.
    Ron

    In case anyone else needs this I'll post the solution myself.
    1. p_arg_names and p_arg_values (shows only the populated parameters / values)
    2. l_arg_names and l_arg_values (shows all the parameters / values)
    So in my case I needed to reference l_arg_names and l_arg_values.

    If you've more money then you can go with 7900GTX rather than 7600GT
    i agree with kakarocht. you are better off with a 7900GTX which will beat 2 x 7600GT and will also leave room for another one if you plan to add it later. and since the prices are going down for the 7900 series, i would say it is also a better deal.

  • Vendors listing including Tax Type column

    Hi Gurus,
    Please help.  I am a SD biz analyst so I am not familiar with FI-CO.
    My customer is asking me if he can print a Vendor Listing including a Tax Type column so he can verify if all Vendor Tax Types have been assigned properly.
    The accounting manager wants to make sure that all 1099 MISC, W8 and W9 vendors are clasified correctly and he is not missing any vendor from the master file
    Regards,
    Marco

    Thx Kenneth. I tried S_ALR_87012086 with all options related to Tax but I am not getting the Tax Type column I want. I am getting Tax Code, Tax Number .... etc. but I am not getting the Tax Type.
    Tax Type in the US is commonly used to identify Vendors which will be getting the 1099-MISC, W9 or W8 tax forms at the end of the year.
    Any other report?

  • My 4th gen shuffle does not play more then one type of podcast It will only play this american life even if I have the moth on it.  It play what ever is first on the list

    My 4th gen shuffle only plays the first category of podcast and will not go to the next category, it will only repeat. Example:it will play all pod casts of this american life(first on the list) and not got to the moth (second category on the list).  It does not work like my old shuffle.

    if you make a playlist and load the podcasts in the order you want to listen to them, it will work.  In effect you are double syncing.  I had the same problem and got it to work

  • Second list depending on first on when-list-changed

    Hello!
    I'm having some trouble with 2 poplists. First poplist (:bloc_portar.lista) is generated ok. Second poplist (:bloc_portar.cnp) depends on the values of the first like this:
    DECLARE
         nume_lista1 varchar2(60) := replace(:bloc_portar.lista, ' ', NULL);
         nume_lista2 varchar2(60);
         rg_query_cnp varchar2(1000) := 'SELECT b.id, b.id FROM vizitatori2 b
         WHERE b.nume=nume_lista2';
         rg_id_cnp recordgroup;
         rg_id2 recordgroup;
         err_cnp NUMBER:= 0;
    BEGIN
    nume_lista2 := substr(nume_lista1, 1, 7);
    message('---' || nume_lista2 || '---');
         rg_id2 := Find_Group ('rg2');
         if not ID_NULL(rg_id2) then
         delete_group(rg_id2);
         end if;
         rg_id_cnp := create_group_from_query('rg2',rg_query_cnp);
         err_cnp := populate_group(rg_id_cnp);
         clear_list('bloc_portar.cnp');
         populate_list('bloc_portar.cnp',rg_id_cnp);
    END;
    nume_lista1 fetches the data selected from the first poplist and nume_lista2 takes the first 7 letters of that string to pass it in the query which should make the group/populate the second list. This code is more of a test and not a final code thats why i used those string functions (and also because the values in first list are concatenated (name+surname).
    I used a message to make sure the value in nume_lista2 is the one that i want for the query to work.
    The problem : its in here 'SELECT b.id, b.id FROM vizitatori2 b WHERE b.nume=nume_lista2';
    I've found out that when i pass the WHERE condition "manually" like this 'SELECT b.id, b.id FROM vizitatori2 b WHERE b.nume=''James'' ';
    the second poplist is populated just fine with the right values. But when i try to make it use the variable nume_lista2 in the condition it says that rg2 (aka the group for the second poplist) "Cannot create Group rg2".
    Hope you can help me,
    Iulian

    But can u enlighten me on a couple of issues pls?Sure :)
    >
    1. How come it doesn't recognise the variable in the query when i make the definition in DECLARE? Shouldn't it be analyzed only later in the main program when i actually use the query ? How does this work?You can do that in declare part too :). I am usually convenient to have a query built just before using it.
    2. Why tripple quotes and concatenate operators ? Is this how variables are passed to queries? I believe i used them before without any extra bording or anything.varchar2 variables are not passed with quotes by default. So, if you do not use the quotes, the resultant query would be something like
    SELECT b.id, b.id FROM vizitatori2 b WHERE b.nume=Jameswhich is not what we expect. So, surround the variable with the quote, which would turn the query to
    SELECT b.id, b.id FROM vizitatori2 b WHERE b.nume='James'HTH.

  • 10.1.3.2.0 Mac OSX Freezes building class list

    When I launch JDev 10.1.3.2.0 on Mac OSX, the status bar on the bottom of the app says "Building class list for project "ProjectName.jpr" and the animated status bar keeps cycling.
    My CPU is at 100% and the java process is taking most of it.
    If I remove the project from the application and restart JDev, everything is fine. The moment I add the project back into the application tho, it is stuck again.
    This happened when I went to the application properties, and added two more JAR files to the application.
    I have since removed these JAR files from the application, and removed them from the disk where they were... Still does not resolve the problem.
    I have searched the forums, and can see that there was a problem with the preferences in the IDE, and deleting the preferences file fixed the issue - that's not the case for me. I tried to delete the file and restart, but I get the same results.
    Short of reinstalling JDev, I'm not sure what to do...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

    It seems it was my error. After a few hours of debugging, I discovered that I had accidentally added "/" to the JAR Directory path - JDev was trying to search my entire hard drive for JAR files to add. I removed this entry, and all worked again...
    Should the "Add Directory" function not limit itself to the selected directory instead of all sub-directories listed?
    Thanks
