Noob Question - Applying a texture to text layer

I've tried searching for the answer, but probably just don't know the right keywords to use, but how do I apply a texture (image) to only show up over a certain layer such as a text layer?  Meaning I want the texture to only show over the text and not anywhere else.

Use the texture layer as a track matte for the text layer.

    Hi everyone
    I'd like to make my scanned PDF documents searchable using the OCR feature of Adobe Acrobat X Standard. The scanned PDF files are stored in one folder (or its subfolders respectively). In principle I could just go to the OCR feature, tell it to add that folder to the OCR conversion list and replace all PDF files in it with searchable versions.
    Some of the files in the folder, however, already are searchable because they were created from Word files for instance. My question is: What will Acrobat's OCR feature do with these files that already are searchable? Will it leave them unchangend? Or will it create new files and replace their existing "text layer" with a new text layer?
    One of the reasons for my question is, that the existing "text layer" is free of recognition errors by definition (because it has been added by Word's conversion feature). This means, a new text layer added by Acrobat's OCR feature can only be equal or inferior in quality compared to the existing one. In the latter case, it wouldn't make sense to replace the existing "text layer".
    A second reason is that some of the already searchable files have security properties (i. e. signatures). What is going to happen to them when the OCR feature creates a new file?

    The usual thing is that Acrobat will object, saying the file contains "renderable text", and do nothing.
    OCR on a file with signatures will, at best, invalidate the signature. More likely, all trace of the signature will be deleted, and it will attempt to do OCR on the visual appearance, finally leaving a graphic. OCR is  not really intended as a late-stage process.

  • How do I apply a texture to a text field's fill area?

    Hi all, first post and all that!
    I've seen that it's possible to format a specific bit of text in a text field with:
    setTextFormat(format:TextFormat, beginIndex:int = -1, endIndex:int = -1):void
    I need to format a section of text by applying a texture to the rectangular fill space around the letters. (Imagine in Microsoft Word that you've written a short sentence and you highlight it. Then you fill the text background with a colour. Then imagine that that colour is a single repeating texture. That's what I'm trying to achieve.) Note that the text field must be multiline, and I'm not looking to fill the whole rectangular text field area. The applied texture needs to fit to each character.
    Is this possible in Actionscript?
    Would I need to use some kind of HTML or CSS formatting?
    Is it possible at all?
    If it is possible, is it possible to change the size of the fill area around the text?

    Actually, that's pretty much what I'm looking for. For anyone else reading this thread:

    That'll fill an area with a repeating texture. The tricky bit now is to work out a top left coordinate for each line of text, and the length of each line in pixels (based on the sum of the character widths). I'll have a poke around and see if there's a way to get that information back from a movie clip.

    Here are 3 options for future reference:
    1. With the setup you've described, apply a Match Move behavior to  the text and make the rectangle the source. Change the Transform parameter to Mimic source.  This way you can still adjust the text postion as needed, but the rectangle will drive the animation.
    2. Use a group to do the animation.  Put both your rectangle and text in the same group and animate the group's postion.
    3. Use the Link behavior.
    Each of these has it's advantages depending on what you need.

  • Applying a texture of water in movement to text

    Hi, I have two clips, one with text, and other one it's the surface of the water of an a pool moving in all direcctions.
    What I wan't to do is to have the text under the water, moving like the surface and with the lines broken by the movement of the surface.
    Now what I have is the text (in FC7) in track one, the clip with the water moving in the video track two, changing the opacity I can see the text under the water bur don't follows the movement of the surface water...
    You Know how I can get that effect in FC7 or Motion?

    In Motion, open the help system and look for the displace behavior. It's fun but not exactly intuitive. Pixels in your text layer will  be moved and distorted by grayscale values of the source layer which will be your movie of the water moving. You wont' get it the first few times, have patience.

  • Why does FCP X crash when I apply a text layer?

    I just bought FCP X and was very happy with everything until I tried to add a text layer to the timeline.  The software tried to access the text attributes and crashed.  I re-opened the software and clicked on the text layer to delete it and FCP crashed.  The only solution was to delete the project, I am glad that I was not working on something important and tried to add this text layer.  The next day I went to the coffee shop and suddenly it worked...I was thrilled.  I thought that the external drives at my home might have been the problem since none are plugged in at the coffee shop. Did some more tests back at the house and it crashed. Today it back to the same status of crashing. 
    Has this happened to anyone else? 
    My work around for this problem is to build the title in Motion 5 and then import the quicktime with alpha to FCP event/project and then apply it to the video in the timeline of FCP.  Not very efficient.

    I am using 10.1.3 and finding it very unstable. I've taken some time to work with it a little while before I responded to your posted response. After updating projects and files, I did manage to share the master file. I am still finding random crashes that get to a point where I cannot launch FCP X until I restart the computer. It seems to crash consistently when trying to share DVD. The previous version did not have all these issues. I really wish I finished my current project before trying to update FCP X.
    Other info regarding my current system: MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb memory. I am running OS X 10.9.5.

  • Applying a text layer to multiple images as a batch action?

    I want to prepare mutliple  images for press release,  that include a small border wtih copyright information.   Simply every photo i work on must be submitted with a small border and the same text indicating copyright on all of them.
    I import from light room and use a batch action to create the border.   Thats simple enough,  is it possilbe to create an action or script so that can i drop in a text layer into each of the images without a manually copying the layer text and pasting it into each file ... one at a time .

  • Expanding Text Layer Size

    It has been a while since I have asked a question so bare with me as I have been taking a break from AE development for a while
    Below are two images that show the standard blur effect in After Effects
    Notice how the blur effect is going outside the boundries of the layer the effect is being applied to (text layer).  My starting question is how this type of functionality can be achieved in a SmartFX plugin.  I have been messing with the max_result_rect, etc in the PreRender call trying to expand the area I am working with but have not been having much luck.  So before sinking too much more time into this I figured I would pose the question in case one of the other developers on here have looked into this before

    I did a pretty horrible job explaining the situation ... I will say I was on too little sleep as always so let me try this one again with much more detail
    What I am trying to accomplish is to perform a blur effect.  I have the blur working well enough (i think) but where I am getting caught up on is trying to get the blur effect to extend beyond the the edge of the layer it is applied onto when that layer is smaller than the composition size.  I had noticed that the blur effect built into AE was showing the behavior above, which is appearing to extend the effect beyond the size of the text layer. 
    From looking at the sample projects it seems like the most similair one would be the "Resizer" project, however I am writing a SmartFX (32bit) plugin so I do not have access to the FrameSetup which is where they are modifying the size of the output buffer from what I can tell. 
    I have attempted to alter the output->result_rect as well as the output->max_result_rect in the PreRender call but am pretty sure what I am trying to accomplish is not the desired way as I end up getting an error when trying to move the layer around the composition having to do with exceeding the max_result_rect.
    Now, my math is doing some fun stuff under the hood like creating temporary AEWorlds and copying to/from these worlds to perform the plugins functionality before finally copying the final result back to the output world.
    My composition has the following size:
    Height: 720px
    Width: 405px
    My text layer is:
    Height: 214px
    Width: 177px
    My input world on Render is showing the following sizes:
    Height: 214px
    Width: 177px
    My output world on Render is showing the following sizes:
    Height: 214px
    Width: 177px
    As a side note, you asked about the extent ... my extent_hint is reading as the following for both the input and output world
    { left=0  top=0  right=177  bottom = 214 }
    While it is reading as the text layer size on the input_world and output_world I can retrieve the original comp size from the in_data object which does show:
    Height: 720px
    Width: 405px
    The plugin is being directly applied to the text layer and is producing the following output:
    What I would like for it to be emulating is the AE gausian blur plugin effect like (which is exceeding the red rectangle of it's layers size from what I can tell):
    This all might still be kind of vague and if it is I appologize, I will keep trying to reword things until I can get my question across ... at it's core I am not sure how to extend the output buffer of the woutput world on a SmartFX plugin I think?
    As a side note, I am working against the CS5 AE SDK

  • Noob Question - PreComp Layers and Effects

    I have precomposed a layer and am wondering why when I apply an effect inside the precomposed layer, it cannot be seen in the main timeline... for instance, I've created a logo on a billboard and precomposed the layer. I added it to the timeline and all is fine. Now, I tried to apply a 'vector paint' effect to a layer inside the precomp. It looks fine in the precomp, but it disappears in the main timeline. Also, I added trapcode particles inside the precomp. They do not show up in the main timeline either. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks to all.

  • Pasting text into a text layer in Photoshop CC 2014

    I've been playing around around with Photoshop CC 2014 HTML5/Javascript extensions (CEP5) for a while now and I came across a problem I couldn't solve: how to paste text in an existing text layer when the user is editing the text? Using evalScript and app.activeDocument.paste(); works fine when pasting copied pixels as a new layer, but if the user is on a text layer editing the text (and I want the extension to paste text there), it throws an evalScript error.
    Am I doing something terribly wrong or what? The next thing I thought was to invoke paste event and try it that way.

    I only see the normal texture filtering. Seems like you have a fundamental misunderstanding here about how 3D works - "pixel perfect" has no meaning for 3D textures since UV space is parametric and has by itself in theory infinite resolution, so any texture will be fit into this range and inevitably a single pixel in the texture can cover more than a pixel on screen or more than a square milimeter on a 3D object. If you want "sharp" textures, you increase the texture resolution, which, if you realyl want that pixely look would be doen using the nearest neighbor method. Regardless, once you zoom in at some point you will see fuzzy edges/ pixels again. It's in the nature of the thing.

  • Use a text layer on top of another text layer as a clipping mask?

    I have searched and searched but I can not find an answer to this question. I've been creating a variety of graphic styles to use in illustrator. The appearance panel is an AMAZING tool but one function seems to be missing. I would very much like to use two identical layers of text to create a clipping layer within a graphic style. The reason I would like to do this is to create the illusion of beveling or just just to create an inner shadow without having to create highlights and shadows manually. As you can see in the attachment the Toony Toons Text has a highlight effect which I created by duplicating the text, removing the effects from the graphic style I made, expanding the words into outlines, overlapping the two and placing them offset of each other so I could shape subtract them and then placing the final highlight on top of the text. This would be SOOO much simpler if I could just create a stroke that sets INSIDE the text and could be offset as well as clipped by the text layer below it. Is this possible? I noticed I can't place a stroke on the inside of a text layer when I'm in the appearance pallet and masking text with text doesn't seem to work. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be really great!

  • Effects not showing up on 3d text layer?

    hi im running into a problem were i motion tracked some 3d text into a scene, but when i add a effect like mossaic to the text nothing is showing up. the effect is on! the text remains just the same as it was before, motion tracked but regular. Am i doing something wrong or can effects only be placed on non 3d text. btw i duplicated the text, turned the 3d off and added a effect and it worked just fine.

    everything is up to date and my computer setting are way above what they need to run after effects.

    Are you using Ray-traced rendering? Did you read the warning?
    If yes, pre-compose your ray-traced 3D text layer, make the main comp Classic, do not collapse transformations and apply your filter.

  • Applying a texture to an OrientedShape3D object?

    i am having problems applying a texture to an OrientedShape3D object. i am following the "recipe" and related examples in the j3d tutorial's chapter 7 on textures. my image is a 32x32 gif file that i want to texture onto an OrientedShape3D object that has 4 vertices:
    the "face" vertices for the OrientedShape3D object are:
    0.0f, 2.0f, 0.0f,
    0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    2.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    2.0f, 2.0f, 0.0f
    the color for the "face" is red:
    1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f,
    the texture vertices are:
    0.0f, 1,0f,
    0.0f, 0.0f,
    1.0f, 0.0f,
    1.0f, 1.0f
    as i wrote my code follows the tutorial's recipe whereby i a create an OrientedShape3D, then the textured appearance, and then i apply that appearance to the OrientedShape3D object.
    when the shape is rendered i do not see the image. rather i see a color from the image but that color occupies the entire face. if i use the texture loader object to, say, scale the image then i see a rendering behavior that looks like the image is folded on itself similar to the problems the tutorial says will happen if the texture vertices are not correct.
    when i do not apply my textured appearance to the OrientedShape3D object the behavior is ok - the face of the shape is always oriented towards my eye, and remains red, as i rotate, scale, and translate the object..

    When you import a 3D object into Photoshop it has to be UV mapped meaning that there will be a JPEG referenced by the material file associated with the object. When you load the object, it is the JPEG which is actually a Texture layer. You can't access it with the 3D tools active but either before or after you apply the 3D adjustments you can double click on the specific texture layer which opens in a new window and then use any of the normal 2D painting/editing tools. When you save the changes to that file it will be applied to the model.
    Try opening a couple of the sample 3D models in the Goodies folder on the Photoshop install disk. Most do have JPEGs associated with them which means you will have an editable texture layer but one (at least) called Simple Robot I think has only a .mtl file which means you will see color and placement, perhaps a bump map, but there is no UV texture, just a procedural made inside the 3D app. Those aren't editable in Photoshop nor can you add a texture layer. A 3D model either has one which you can edit or it doesn't.

    Say I want to use it as an opacity mask on a specific layer, or specific group of layers. How do I do it?
    I mean, I know I can select with the wand and then add a layer mask in the shape of whatever I selected, but the transparency/alpha info will be stripped. Portions of the mask will either be transparent or opaque.
    Copying a layer with gradients -- like a that of a worn-out paper texture -- into a layer mask is something I haven't been able to do. But I'm sure it can be done, because masks can do different levels of alpha just fine (they'd be pretty useless if they didn't).

    Whoa, that actually worked. Alt-clicking the mask is what did the trick.
    IMO, they should have made it work simply by clicking the mask and pasting into it. Having to alt-click it is, in my view, completely unnecessary. Not knowing that I had to hold down ALT has cost me who-knows-how-many hours over the years.
    But hey, that's how the program works so that's what I'm going to have to do from now on. Thanks, J!

    I cannot figure out why only even no. lines are being read. I inserted a breakpoint at the line
              System.out.println(NetworkLine);This shows me that only even no. lines are being read by readLine(). Any help will be appreaciated.
