Noob question use dng converter or let LR convert to dng

Sorry for the noob question but I'm transitioning over to LR from aperture and I believe DNG is  a good move for me.  Now then, is there any advantage to using the converter over letting LR do it?

It really is the same integrated tool, yes. All the same preferences are there.
The only thing I am not aware if Lightroom can do is Extract Embedded Originals. But that's not something I'd ever do to my own RAW files.

  • Loupe in Bridge doesn't display DNG images created using DNG Converter correctly. Why?

I have noticed recently an anomaly in Bridge when viewing DNG files that are created by converting my Nikon NEF files to DNG using the DNG converter. Specifically, when clicking on the preview image of a DNG file, in order to open the loupe, the 100% image seen in the loupe remain fuzzy, whereas when clicking on a preview of the original NEF file the 100% view in the loupe is sharp and clear.
I am using DNG Converter version 4.6.0.3, and it also occurs when using version 4.4.1. I am using Bridge version 2.1.1.9.
I have no reason to believe that Bridge is at fault, since the loupe function does work properly when viewing the NEF file. It would seem that there's a problem in the DNG conversion.
However, despite this anomaly seen in Bridge, when I open the DNG file in Camera Raw, it is perfectly normal at 100% or any magnification.
I have tried re-setting the JPEG review size in the DNG converter, but that makes no difference.
What's going on here? I don't want to keep both the NEF and DNG versions, for reasons of space, but I'd like the loupe to work correctly. Help, please?

Try to recreate the thumbnails for that folder.
Use the latest version of the converter (5.4)

  • My question is which better to use every time my iPad until the battery is 0% then charge it to 100% then use it again until it is 0% or i use it until the percentage is low then charge it until it is 70 - 80 %  then use it but not let it charge to 100%

My question is which better to use every time my iPad until the battery is 0% then charge it to 100% then use it again until it is 0% or i use it until the percentage is low then charge it until it is 70 - 80 % percentage then use it but not let it charge until it is 100% to reduce the number of circles and increase the life of battery as i read that it must at least one time a month use the device until the battery drain to 0% then charge it again to 100% but i don't understand is it must be one, two, three times a month or properly most of the times  to reduce the the number of circles and increase the life of the battery?

    wuzradioman,
I was originally on your side in the discussion of batteries, however, after being contradicted by Meg St._Clair and others I took a leap of faith and took their advice with my Apple devices.  Much to my chagrin their advice has proven true.
Long story short I have not noticed any differences in my battery life by changing my charging habits to what is convienant over what is more in line with conventional battery myths.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, I need to make a master DVD that can then be duplicated in bulk as a single layer disc.  This surprises me because I tried burning a different DVD project that has worked in the past which is also 4.5 GB and now I could not burn that either.  I also reencoded some material to get the new project down to 4.4 GB but it still would not burn.  Any ideas are appreciated.

  • Noob questions...windows emulation on mac OS 10.4

getting my ibook later this week and was wondering about windows emulation. i don't have an intel processor in my ibook (obviously), so what's your recommendation for a product that runs windows on a mac? and, total noob question, do i have to buy a copy of windows? i already have windows on my dell laptop.
thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
so, do the new macbooks have some kind of software
pre-installed that runs windows? my friends who just
got a macbook tells me he can run windows programs if
    he needs to.
The MacBooks have Intel processors in them. So, no emulation is necessary. They can directly install and run Windows if they want.
The reason you need a program like Virtual PC on an iBook is because it uses a PowerPC processor which Windows cannot communicate with. And, the PowerPC Mac's architecture is completely different.
So, that means you need a program like Virtual PC to completely emulate an entire PC computer. Basically, it is a program that simulates a real computer and then translates those Intel instructions into PowerPC instructions that your iBook can understand.
There is a severe performance penalty for all this translation. The iBook G4 will not perform like a regular Windows PC. It will be much slower, and you will need to be more patient. With a G4 iBook, you could reasonably expect your performance to be comparable to a 300 MHz PC running Windows XP.
With a 1.8 GHz iMac G5 and 2 GB of RAM, I was experiencing performance comparable to a 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron system with 256 MB of RAM (which I happened to have around for comparison).
But, for more intensive tasks, the performance was more comparable to a 500 MHz system.
Anyway, back to the Intel Macs. Those machine's only need a free Apple Utility "Boot Camp" to provide the drivers and create a Windows compatible boot partition:
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/
And, then they need Windows XP Home or Pro. That's it.
With programs like Parallels, they can run Windows inside the Mac OS (or along side it) much like you would with Virtual PC:
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/
i am trying to figure out where this might be useful
    in the first place.
It is useful if you need to be able to run Windows software, but don't want to buy a PC. It's more convenient to have one machine that can do everything than it is to have a Mac and a separate PC.
Feel free to ask additional questions if you have them. Or, if you like, hit solved on the post if you feel everything is answered.
But, do let me know if I can answer any additional questions or need to re-state something clearer.

  • Question about .DNG...

The DNG format is basically a RAW format, right? So when i shoot in RAW (in Nikon, it's called .NEF), there is no processing of the image "in camera", like:
    - sharpening
    - noise reduction
    - white balance
When i import the photos (converted to .DNG) into LR, some settings are made automatically:
    - Sharpening: 25
    - Color noise reduction: 25
    - Brightness: 50
    - Contrast: 25
If these settings were set to "0", that would make the photo purely untouched, right? A pure RAW file with no adjustments. I'm assuming these settings are set to make the photo more pleasing "out of the box". Am i right?
Also, my Nikon D50 has excellent in-camera noise reduction when i shoot in .jpg. Is LW's noise reduction slider linked to the excellent D50 noise reduction? Or is LR simply applying it's own noise reduction? I'm assuming (and hoping) that it's using the D50's noise reduction because 1) there are only 2 sliders for noise reduction, and 2) the noise reduction is extremely fast!
    Thanks for all your help!
    John

John you pretty much have it. Though I would not count on any companies
products trying to apply sharpening or anything else so that it matched what
the in camera version did. For one thing companies like Adobe may not have
access to how that is done. Second of all there are better ways of doing all
of that. The processing capabilities of cameras are very limited. They have
to be in order to shoot pictures and get them done so you can shoot another
one. If you had powerful in camera processing with sophiticated routines you
would end up shooting a picture and then 10 minutes later to was finally
written to the card with all of the processing done. Cameras while a distant
cousin to computers are not computers.
In fact based on what I have seen for things like in camera sharpening, etc.
you are much better off turning all of that off or shoot raw so that your
images aren't affected and doing the job right in LR or Photoshop. You can
always do a better job and with a lot more control.
Also, right now the noise reduction and sharpening in LR just plain sucks.
So these things do need to be done in Photoshop and noise reduction needs a
third party plug-in because the noise reduction even in Photoshop sucks.
As for what Andrew said about Meta-Data. Adobe does know which cameras have
things that get lost going from the camera RAW format to DNG format. Adobe
needs to publish this information so that we know. The longer Adobe keeps
things like this in the dark the longer it will take for DNG to be fully
accepted. It comes across as Adobe hidding something very bad, otherwise
    they would spell it out.
As for RAW files being digital negatives well that make more sense than
anything else. Digital cameras will never have a true negative option RAW is
it. As for DNG being the envelope your negatives and prints come back to you
in. Well, maybe but that isn't how 99.99% of people look at it and comments
like those from Andrew only serve to confuse people because now people will
read what he said and then think DNG files aren't RAW files and they are.
For some reason people like to pick nits instead of just answering the
question using the information and terms that the rest of the world uses and
understands. There is no need to confuse and it doesn't matter what DNG
technically is for the consumer and photography worlds it is Adobe's open
    standard RAW format.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699

What do you mean it won't let you?  What exactly does it say? (Sorry to sound so exasperated but this is like the 6th post in a row where people have made vague statements which do little to help us find solutions without a game of 20 questions.)  I'm going to guess and say you can only deauthorize a computer to which you have physical access or VPN login.  The alternative is to deauthorize all which you can only do once a year.

  • Questions About DNG

    1) Is the Current DNG 5.5 only useable in CS4?
    2) I notice that support for cameras is shown for both RAW and DNG. Since DNG is supposed to be universal, what is the down side of using DNG to run raw files from cameras such as the Canon 7D? Should I be using DNG 5.5 on CS3 for this camera? An earlier one?
    3) What would be the observable differences between a supported and non-supported when converting to DNG?
    Message was edited by: Hudechrome

    1) Is the Current DNG 5.5 only useable in CS4?
The DNG converter is a stand-alone program, i.e. it is running without CS, LR or Bridge. 5.5 is the version of the program code (click on About in the dialog). The "usability" is determined rather by the version of the DNG format: older versions of CS do not support features, which have been introduced in newer DNG format versions.
The DNG format can be selected in the DNG converter dialog: Change Preferences -> Compatibility.
As the Canon7D does not require any new features, the resulting DNG file can be used in CS3 or even in CS2, even if the conversion specifies a higher DNG version.
    3) What would be the observable differences between a supported and non-supported when converting to DNG?
If the DNG converter does not support a camera, it will not process the file. The speciality in this particular case is, that the 7D is not mentioned as "supported", because the support is preliminary.
It's file extension is supported but the 7D is not. Therefore conversions are possible
The file name extention is irrelevant. All newer Canon raw files have the extention CR2; that does not mean, that the camera is supported by ACR or the DNG converter.
We are seeing a magenta cast to clipped highlights from the 7D in ACR
    Try reducing "Blacks".
the files from the 7D appear noisy, even the iSO 200 files
The 7D is about as noisy as the 50D at low ISOs, and less noise from 1600. However, all copies exhibit a vertical banding. It depends on the copy, at which intensity and how strong it appears. I have not seen it with ISO higher than 400, and it occurs usually in the 9th and 10th stop of the dynamic range, i.e. you have to increase the intensity a lot (exposure, brightness, fill light) in order to see it (and blacks = 0).
Here are two samples for the banding, 100% crops:

How do I get a refund?  I have tried to use this converter to change a PDF to a word document or excel document three of four times and it always fails..  I want my money back but don't see any way to communicate with Adobe.  i really just want my money back.  Very disappointed.  Also disappointed that it is so hard to find a way to communicate with Adobe that I have to resort to asking this question in this forum.

You need to use the CHAT link in support to reach Adobe staff. Be sure you know the product name you are trying to cancel, Adobe have lots of products, several converters etc. I think it is ExportPDF you have, most likely.

The batch processor in Audition is an internal tool, not an external one so no, you can't use it on your website because it's DAW, not a web development kit. There's no API available.

  • Going Abroad - Question About Voltage Converter Stuff

Hello, so I am going abroad for a few months (the Netherlands), and I have a question about voltage converter stuff. All of the voltage converters I can find say powers heat-producing appliances rated 500-1600 and converts foreign voltage of 220-240 volts to U.S. voltage 110-120. However, it says not to use on appliances under 500 watts such as computers. So first, off does anyone know how many watts an ibook g4 14" puts off. Secondly, I read that laptops have a dual adapter and that they can work on the 220-240 volts converter. Does anyone have any ideas about these issues; any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Brandon,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Your iBook's power adapter is rated for 100-240v. All you need is an adapter for the plug so it will fit in a European outlet. You can find them at travel stores or online for a few dollars.

  • I can't open RAW files from new Sony Alpha a6000 camera in PSE 11 camera raw editor. Is there an update that will allow me to do this or do I need to always use DNG convertor?

You would need to update to PSE 12, or just keep using the DNG converter. Your camera requires ACR 8.4, which isn't compatible with PSE 11. It's also not compatible with PSE 12 if you are running Vista or XP.

  • Using of CONVERT DATE

    Hello,
I have two questions relating to a part of a source code, which I have to analyze:
      CONVERT DATE INTAB-DATUM INTO INVERTED-DATE DAT_INV.
SELECT SINGLE * FROM TCURR WHERE KURST = INTAB-KURST AND
                                       FCURR = INTAB-WAEKZ AND
                                       TCURR = EUR AND
                                       GDATU = DAT_INV.
I don`t know the command CONVERT DATE INTAB-DATUM INTO INVERTED-DATE DAT_INV. For what purpose do I need this command?
Another question is the SELECT-command. I always thought, that it is necessary to specify a workarea where the result of the Select-Command will be saved. Is that wrong?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards,
    Tobias

Hi, here is the explanation for your two queries:
    1. You can actually go for F1 help for this and get some idea...
In some cases (for example, when sorting dates in descending order), it is useful to convert a date from     format D to an inverted date by using the keyword CONVERT.
EX:  DATA: odate TYPE d VALUE '19955011',
          idate LIKE odate.
    DATA field(8).
    field = odate.
    WRITE / field.
CONVERT DATE odate INTO INVERTED-DATE idate.
    field = idate.
    WRITE / field.
CONVERT INVERTED-DATE idate INTO DATE odate.
    field = odate.
    WRITE / field.
    Output:
    19955011
    80044988
    19955011
    2. If you mention a table under TABLES declaration, then it means that a workarea with the same table name has been created and hence when u don't specify INTO TABLE, it won't give any error. But if u don't specify the tablename under TABLES it will show error..
If you check in your program the table might have been declared under TABLES..
    Hope this helps..
