(noob) Where to file a bug of OS X 10.6 System Preferences?

Hi there,
I found a bug in my system preferences. I'm using the german localization and the UI in the preference pane "energy" is broken. Where shall I file this bug so that Apple can fix this?

  • I can't set up icloud on my older macbook. The systems preferences has only "mobile me". I have lots of files on this computer that I want to transfer.

How do you set up icloud on an older macbook? It is full of files that I want to keep. The system preferences menu does not have icloud. It has mobile me. Do I have to upgrade the operating system to, say, mountain lion? Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I want to give the old one to my granddaughter.

You have to update to Lion at least to get basic iCloud functions, and if you want full iCloud functions, then you need to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

System Preferences quits suddenly. I have lost the dock, including the trash and ability to change desktop image. How can I replace this part of System Preferences? Where can I find Trash? All other aspects of System Preferences work.

just that that is one method, and lacks provision for working boot image and for an emergency - Lion gives a small minimal emergency boot environment but may lack all the utilities you need to use and run, even some drivers that your mac requires for add on PCIe.
Just grab and look through Help in Carbon Copy and SuperDuper, both excellent and each has their use - together - for cloning.
And do you have two TM backup sets? ought to consider that also, rotate daily or make a weekly set. Otherwise you are putting all your eggs in the proverbial one basket.

  • Where to file bugs

Is this forum the most appropriate place to file bugs?
I've had difficulty determining where to file them.
Hopefully it's not some way that requires proprietary Adobe Flash.

Is this forum the most appropriate place to file bugs? No. Because it's not monitored by Oracle support. The appropriate place is metalink, statement from Oracle:
Is Oracle SQL Developer supported by Oracle Support?
The latest production release of SQL Developer is supported by Oracle Support for any customers with support for the database they are using SQL Developer against. If customers encounter bugs in earlier releases that are fixed in a later release, they will be encouraged to upgrade to the latest release. Users are encouraged to log any issues through Metalink.

  • Windows 8.1 x64 - Serious "file move" bug

I've reliably replicated a file copy bug in Windows 8.1. It's rather significant, and needs to be fixed ASAP, but this is the only forum I can find where I can even report it.
Problem: A drag-and-drop (or cut-and-paste) "move" operation where the destination files already exist results in the dropped files being deleted without warning, with the destination files being unchanged.
How to replicate: Take the following steps, which assume that your Desktop is located on your C: drive.
Create a folder on the C: drive. Name it "zzz" to make it easy to find.
Create a folder on the Desktop, then create another "zzz" folder inside of it. Let's name this one "Desktop\Test\zzz" for clarity.
Copy a couple of files from a different drive into both "zzz" folders, so that the contents of both folders are identical. It is best if the files are at least a few days old, so the last-modified date will be obvious.
Change one or two of the files in the Desktop's "zzz" folder. The nature of the change doesn't matter.
Make sure you have two Explorer windows open - one for Desktop\Test and one for C:\ - to facilitate file copying.
Drag the new "zzz" folder from Desktop\Test into C:\.
What should happen at this point is that, since you're moving files where the filenames are the same, Windows should show an alert box and prompt you for the correct handling of the situation. However, that's not what happens. The Desktop's "zzz"
folder quietly vanishes, and the C:\zzz folder retains its old files. The new files are deleted without warning. In addition, if you use Ctrl-Z to Undo the copy...the Desktop "zzz" folder comes back, but it's empty. All of your changes
    are irretrievably gone.
The folder depth doesn't seem to be relevant; I discovered the bug while working with files several folders deep, but the demonstration shows that it happens at the root level as well. Likewise, there's nothing special about the C: drive; I replicated it
on R:\ (an external USB hard drive) just as easily. Similarly, I should point out that performing these steps between two different drives (triggering a copy rather than a move) is handled correctly, although using shift-drag to force a move demonstrates the
    same bug.
When using Cut/Paste instead of (shift-)drag/drop, the same thing happens, but at least there's an alert box. It's not helpful, but it does at least show a message:
    Item Not Found
    Could not find this item
This is no longer located in (folder name). Verify the item's location and try again.(icon and file information)
However, none of the three options presented will do you any good; by the time you see this alert box, the source folder and its contents have already been deleted.

Thing is, I *do* get prompted when there are conflicts while copying folders.  I've been using Windows 8.1 since it came out, professionally and every day, and I've not run across a file-copy gotcha worse than a copy conflict prompt popping
behind an open window (but it does always get issued).
I wonder what could now be configured differently between our two setups...  I have installed the program Classic Shell, and it does add some capabilities to Explorer.  However, I don't recall "correcting the handling of folder copy conflicts"
ever being listed as one of the things it brings to the party.
Sorry that setting alone didn't correct the whole issue for you.

In the most recent version I cannot get this trick to work, however. But try it anyway, maybe it is just my macthat has an issue.
Did this happen directly after the update? Where is your library located, on an external or an internal drive? Are your originals managed or referenced?
I'd try next to check, if this is caused by the library, by creating a small test library and trying to trash pictures there. If it works well in a new library try to repair the database and the permissions on your regular library.  See:

  • How to file a bug report?

Hi there  I'm using a Sony Z3 Compact with Lollipop 5.1.1 and after the update, there is no longer any message on the lock screen, telling me the remaining charge time. I've read others saying the same thing, so I'm definately not alone. I'd like to file a bug report somewhere, but where does one do so? Kind regards, Martin

Is it something you can do, or can you point me in the right direction?

  • How do I officially file a bug?

''locking - please stick with your original thread - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/828126''
I have been unable to use Firefox from 4.0 onwards on Solaris/SPARC, because it immediately crashes when encountering a Flash page. I posted a question about it which has been ignored. I would like to file a bug report, but there is no bug reporting tool evident on either mozilla.com or mozilla.org.
Where can I file a bug?

Just in case, download and run the adware removal tool here >  The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
Easy, safe, and only takes a minute or two.

  • File Sharing Bug or Limitation?

    Howdy,
I have a client install of Leopard 10.5.2 and was trying to turn it into a file sharing machine on the local network. If I share more than 6 folders, when the computer restarts, only 6 appears in the File Sharing list in System Preferences. I first thought that the other shares didn't take for some reason, so I went ahead and de-shared the 6 listed shares. I restart the computer. I go back to System Preferences, and 6 new shares (from the 30 or so shares), where showing. I delete those, and 6 new ones popped up after restart.
#1: I'm left wondering, is this is bug or a specifically a limitation of Leopard client file sharing?
#2: Has anyone else run this problem?
#3: What is the solution, if there is one even.

this is a bug in sharing back-end framework which applies only to what is shown in UI (both Sharing pref pane and Finder are affected), but these folders are actually shared (and afp or smb clients will have access to them).
Apple has the bug filed against appropriate component

  • Could someone please explain to me how to file a bug report?

    Hi,
I had a problem recently with a bug in uevnts. I found a workaround for it, However when I went to open a bug that had similar symptoms the user got mad and closed the bug. Could someone please explain to me what I need to do to correctly file a bug report, and please don't say read the wiki. As in order to get log files, I need to know where they are, etc...
    Thanks,
    MarcoRosso.

What questions remain after consulting the wiki? Maybe you can post the bug report in question, so it will be easier for others to point out how you could have responded more constructively. First general place to look for log files is /var/log/*.

  • Getting file from directory where class files are

hi i want to load a properties file from the directory where my java program is (the class/jar files)
somebody told me that i could use System.getProperty("user.dir"); but it would only work under windows; under linux it points elsewhere.
how can i determine the directory where my program lies? sounds easy but i failed :(

why to hell put it in the classpath? Because that way you don't have to ask the user where the hell he put the file.
and if i would do so the next question: how can my
program modify the classpath? It can't. And it doesn't need to.
isn't there another way to determine the directory
where the app is started from???If you mean the current, or working, directory, then yes there are several ways to determine that. But that directory need not be where the classes are actually stored. In fact the current directory doesn't even have to be in the classpath.
    Now, here's the best way to deal with properties files. (IMHO of course.) Put them in the classpath, in the same directory or jar file as your classes. Then to create a Properties object and load it from your properties file named e.g. "default.properties" you do this:Properties props = new Properties();
    props.load(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("/default.properties"));

  • Where are files for my applications kept? I'm trying to do a clean install.

I have an intel imac OS 10.6.8. I have to do a clean install and need to transfer my files to a USB flashdrive because time machine hasn't backed up in 3 months. Where are files for my applications kept?

Since you mentioned Time Machine, I'm assuming you have an external hard drive? So why not make a complete backup - either with Time Machine or a bootable clone with CarbonCopyCloner or SuperSuper? Applications sometimes transfer well, but not always - it depends how many files/parts they have on the hard drive in different locations. There is no simple answer to your question because of that - it depends on the individual application. I'd back up all of it, do the install, and then use Setup Assistant to port things back.

  • Why does Apple not want me to know where my files are?

There is one aspect that I find absolutely ridiculous and frustrating on Mac-OS. When I'm in Apple applications, it is impossible to find out where the file I'm working on is. For example, I have multiple files in my system, in different directories, lets say direcotories AA and BB and the file is called FooBar.txt. I open one of them in TextEdit. Great. Now I want to know which file I'm editing, AA/FooBar.txt or BB/FooBar.txt.
Traditionally, I would go to File and do a "Save As" and devine where the file is by where TextEdit thinks I need to save a new version of the file. Unfortunately, this is no longer available in Lion.
Okay, I understand that Mac is now doing verisions and the "Save As" was a user hack ... but it worked. I have tried to go to the Files->Properties, no luck this is just metadata about the contents of the file entered by the user, not system metadata about where the file is located, its size, owner, etc. I do not want to have to make a Dupicate of the file just to find out where when I do the save its going to put the file. I don't want a duplicate, all I want to know is where is the file I'm currently looking at.
I know this is all part of the mis-guided Apple idea that I shouldn't care about where my files are stored ala iPad and Apple iCloud and that I can find my files using Finder, but the reality of the situation is ... I do care where my files are stored. The files afterall belong to me not to Apple and Apple does allow me to have a directory tree structure which I choose to use to organize myself.
Yes, I know that Finder is wonderful and to unsophisticated users, this is all they need. But for those of us who are more sophisticated, we want-to and need-to know where our files are. And, yes, we will have many files with duplicate names.
As for Finder, I would like to be able to have a column dispolayed that lets me see where the files it found actual are. Then I want to sort on this. As far as I know, the only way to do this is to go to finder, type in the name of the file, then choose the Show all in Finder and then click on each file which then shows me a directory breadcrumbs on the botom of the screen. Again, this might be acceptable to the unsophisticated user, this is very awkward to the sophisticated user. Example, I find a file called xml.config. Great. I now want to not only edit the file but to open up a Terminal in the directoy where I found the file xml.config. Again, I know that a Terminal is not a thing an unsophisticated user wants-to or needs-to do. However, this is a feater of Mac-OS and I want to use it. yes, I can co through the Unix CD command and ultimately get there, but what a pain!!
So, hopefully, all you very sophisticated users will just point me to the right settings, swtiches and commands to make my life easier or that your designers will try to look at the sophisticated use cases and provide us with new tools, commands and options to make our lives easier. At the present, these frustrations remind me of the Microsoft ... we know beter .. attitude. So please, proove me wrong ;-)

While most likely not of interest to you, Spotlight can also tell you where the files it finds are located
Hover the mouse pointer over the name, and press Command-Option and the path to the file will be displayed.
As for opening a terminal session in the directory where a file is located, there is Applescripts that do just that as well as specific features in Lion/Mountain Lion terminal:
