Nord electro as evb3 controller

Hi: I'm trying to improve my EVB3 tracks and at the same time buy an organ clone to gig with. I'm attracted to the nord electro because of its size and versatility. Does anyone use one of these to trigger the evb3? How well do the drawbars (?) and other controllers work?
Thanks, JP

Went ahead and bought the electro and it interfaces well with the evb3

  • Changing the EVB3 speed control

How do I change the rotary speed control number on the EVB3 to accept controller change #82, which is what my Nord Electro is sending? I'm using the Electro as a MIDI controller for Mainstage, and I've got all three pedal jacks plugged in, but i don't want the sustain pedal to change speeds. What am I missing?

Duh...it's in the manual. Just change the Midi Mode in the EVB3 controls to NE (I think that might be short for Nord Electro)

  • How do I hook my Keyboard up to my computer to use it as a MIDI controller?

Ok, I'm new to MACS and new to LOGIC. I just installed logic and all of its components on my IMAC. OSX 10.6.3 Once I installed everything, I tried to hook up my electric piano to use it as a MIDI controller. Mind you, I am also completely new to MIDI. My Piano is a KORG sp-300. I used an Alesis Audio Link USB- MIDI cable to connect my keyboard directly to a usb port in my MAC. I hooked up the midi side of the connector to the midi in and out on my keyboard, and plugged in the usb side to the computer. I then went to the Audio Midi set up, and looked in the midi studio, and there was the USB2MIDI(which is associated with the Alesis cord, and not my Korg piano) and the IAC driver from MAC. I checked so that both are online, and didn't change any of the other settings. I did a test set up, but when I played notes on the keyboard nothing happened.
So now when I open Logic, or garage band for that matter, it doesn't recognize that I have a midi controller hooked up. When I look in midi preferences in garageband, it says that there are 2 midi devices detected. In logic it says that there is no input or output.
I read the manual for LOGIC and for my Korg, and I am lost. Korg says that it transmits on 1 channel, automatically set to channel 1 if not adjusted, and receives on 16. If I am correct, right now I am not interested in receiving, only transmitting.
At this point, I just want to select a software instrument in Logic, play my Korg, and see notes(or MIDI data) appear in the arrange area. I don't know what's going on, but again, I am completely lost.
Could someone please help me here? Am I missing an obvious step? Like I said, I am new to all of this, so please let me know if you have any idea how to get my midi controller to work. It says in the Korg manual that it can be used as a controller, or a multitimbral tone generator. And I did switch the Local Off.
By the way, who would be best to call to solve this issue. MAC? Sweetwater(where I bought the Alesis cord, and Logic)? Or Korg?
Please let me know if you have any helpful advice.
    Thanks,
    Tristan

  • Control only the software instrument of one channel strip at a time with one Controller

    Hi people,
I have a Nord Lead 2 and a Korg Nanokontrol and I want to use these as Midi controllers in the following way, but don't really know how to set up the system:
I have 4 Channelstrips and each has the free software instrument Tyrell N6 inserted. I have the opportunity to change the volume of each channel strip with my faders on the Nanokontrol which works fine and gives me the opportunity to make layers and change also to only use one sound at a time. And this works fine. However, now I want to have the opportunity to change the parameters of each Tyrell with my Nord Lead. But with 4 channelstrips each with a Tyrell N6 I want to have the opportunity to only somehow manipulate only one instance of Tyrell at a time and change the channelstrip for which the Nord Lead manipulates the Tyrell. Is there an opportunity in Mainstage to do that?
Hope it is understandable. Help would be really much appricated. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Hi DaCaptain,
Thank you very much for your answer. I tried it yesterday, but it doesnt really work for me to be honest. The thing is that I really wanna stick to one patch, so that I can have like one patch for each song.
However, if you might be interested I found a way to do it yesterday on my own. This is how I have done it:
    In Layout-Mode
    - Create Controls for each instance of Tyrell. For my purpose I created 4 times:
                 - controlls for the Filter Section
                 - controls for ADSR1
                 - controls for ADSR2
    - So you have 4 Sections of controllers in Layout Mode. Each meant to controll one Tyrell Instance
    - Now each section gets its own Midi Channel. So all the controllers of section 1 respond to MIDI Channel 1 and the controllers of section 2 respond to MIDI Channel 2 and so on.
    - Now you tell the Nord Lead that it should send via MIDI Channel 1 and you assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the first section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the first Tyrell. And you proceed this way until all the controllers of the first sections are assigned. Then you swith to MIDI Channel 2 on the Nord Lead and assign the Cutoff-Controller of the Nord Lead to the controller (the one of the second section) that is suppose to control the cutoff of the second Tyrell. And here again you proceed this way until all the controllers of the second sections are assigned. Then you go on with the third and fourth section taking MIDI Channel 3 and 4.
    In Edit-Mode
    - In Edit Mode now you of course assign the controllers to the functions in each Tyrell
    Result
    - Now you can switch between the MIDI Channels on the Nord Lead. This is quiet easy because you can assign a MIDI Channel to one of four buttons on the Nord Lead.
    - So if you switch to MIDI Channel 1 you can controll the functions of the first Tyrell and if you switch to MIDI Channel 2 you can controll the functions of the second Tyrell. And all in one Patch with only one controller which is even from the nineties. I find this really great. The only problem is that the Layout might get really messy, if you try to maybe control more functions of each Tyrell. And I really think maybe Mainstage in future could give us the opportunity to create bigger Layouts - maybe with different Windows or something.
Hope you might find this interesting or even helpful.
    See you

  • A few questions for a new setup

    Hi All,
I've been wanting to set up Main Stage to replace a hardware synth of mine (Korg Micro X) as I am limited by the 25 note key range. I've set up the whole gig (concert) with split patches etc and it sounds great. I'm using my NORD Electro 2 as a MIDI keyboard. The thing is, that I want to use some of the sounds from the NORD as they sound much better than the software synth versions. I think I have figured out a way around this by having a concert level audio channel which my NORD goes into and out to the main output. I've also mapped a foot controller to solo this channel (as sometimes I want to hear just the NORD and not the software synths which are mapped over the same keys). I've similarly mapped a button on the NORD to mute the NORD channel so that I only hear the software synth.... (phew)
Now, the problem is that if I have the mute switch ON, and then I solo the NORD track, it works fine. Once I release the solo pedal (I have to hold it down while I play), the NORD channel doesn't fully mute again. It attenuates but not fully mutes. To fully mute I have to un-mute the channel and re-mute. Is there any way around this???
Another question, is there any way that you can turn OFF some midi signals?? Or put another way, tell Main Stage to ignore certain MIDI signals? Some of the NORD buttons are transmitting information to Main Stage by default. I.e. when I select a preset patch on the NORD, it jumps to a certain patch in Main Stage and I don't want it to do this.
I know it's a lot of information but I would appreciate any information.
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    P.S. I'm running Main Stage 1.0.2

I haven't tried this, but one way around this might be to teach MainStage about the offending button.
Set up a new button in MS Layout & 'Learn' your patch change to it.
Having done that, disable the new button in Edit.
If you set this up at Concert level, it ought to prevent any patch change messages getting through to the rest of MainStage.

  • Not sure which direction I should be heading

I'm going to drop a lot of money on equipment sometime during the next six months, and I'm really not sure which direction I should take this. As I see it I could either go with everything hardware, or I could go with Mainstage. Basically, what I want is to get the sound of me and my keyboardist up to snuff, as it's currently not that great.
What I'm thinking of getting for now:
    Hardware route:
    Nord Electro 73
    a magically great guitarfx
    Software route:
    Mainstage
    M-Audio Profire 2626
    Midi foot controller
    Macbook Pro 3,06GHz 4GB RAM
As you can see, the Mainstage route will be more expensive. At the same time it will offer more flexibility, and the ability for more bandmates to join in in the future.
Keyboardist will use the following sounds:
    - Piano
    - Rhodes w/ effects
    - B3
    - Clavinet
    - Solina
    - Strings
    - (Maybe some C64 SID-sounds)
I guess that's it for now.
    Guitarist (me) will use:
    - Overdrive
    - Amp simulator
    - Delay (I know this takes a lot of processing power, so only one or two delay-fx simultaneously.)
    - Other, typical guitar-fx.
If I go hardware I'll go with a multi-fx, but I have yet to find any that will let me tap the tempo on one patch and then keep that tempo when I go to the next patch, so they get kind of limited.
We will both be playing at the same time, and latency is important. I want to use it at 16bit/44,1KHz, as I guess that's the lowest I can go. I want to be able to play with 32 sample buffer. At 64 samples the latency gets too long. I guess I could get used to it, but the day I try to run my bassist or other guitarist og lead vocals or backing vocals through Mainstage I don't want to have to excuse the latency.
Is it stable enough? I plan on using the computer as a Mainstage-only laptop, not installing anything except Mainstage and maybe a few plugins. It'll normally not be connected to the internet, with Airport turned off.
There's probably a lot of stuff I've forgot to mention, that I might think of later, but the main question is; which route would you go in my situation? Hardware or software?

Stability will be risky on mainstage. Some people have no problems, other have lots of cpu issues.
I've been running one keyboardist and a backingtrack loaded into exs24 and have had one problem during a show that required a reboot.
EXS24 stopped playing a backing track twice as well - which was pretty major.
I'll be using playback for backing tracks and will not be sending my guitar through the computer. We will also have a drummer playing now, so if the computer breaks, we'll lose keyboards and will be able to continue on and end a song.
I think it's an acceptable risk for the flexibility and cost savings - since I already had a laptop and all the midi gear. And I try to accept a bit of glitchyness as it's a new program. Hopefully that will be changing over the next few months - as this latest version seems more stable and updates should add to that.
If I were a major act playing large shows, *I would not be using it*. And if it continues to cause problems, we'll be looking for something else.
I used the logic environment for our last band. We had three keyboards for three separate people - that worked pretty much flawlessly.

  • Expression pedals conflict?

I'm running two keyboard controllers and two expression pedals. What seems to happen is that I can't seperate the expression pedals signals even though they're coming in on different midi channels. For instance, If I'm controlling the EV-B3 with one pedal and I touch the other pedal, it affects the expression of the organ. Obviously, they're both coming in as controller #11, but can I assign one of them to reroute to some other number and still have it work as an expression pedal for the other keyboard?
    Thanks,
    Stewart
PS. I just got a new Macbook (not Pro) w 4GB of RAM and left it at 10.5.0 and have had NO problems with CPU spiking like I had in 10.5.2 (that had Airport off)

Actually, that helped a lot. Played St. Louis tonight with no problems. One of the issues is that I'm running a Nord Electro into an M-Audio Uno and also running the Axiom 49. That's not the half of it because I wanted to have a backup sound source in the event Mainstage crashed, so both the the Nord and Axiom are going into a 2x2 merge box with one out going to a JV1010 and the other going to the Uno. If Mainstage misbehaves, I can bring up the JV1010 and the Electro as backups. So Mainstage is receiving MIDI from the Axiom both from the USB port connected to the MacBook AND the merge box connected to the Uno.
Anyway, I'll be on tour for the next two weeks and would love to meet other Mainstage users. Go to http://www.54seconds.com/shows.shtml to see where we'll be.

  • Live - CPU issue

    Hello,
ok here's the deal, I have a MacBook 2.1 Ghz, 4 MbRam, running Mac Os Tiger 10.4.11, an Edirol FA101 Firewire Audio-Interface, a Nord Electro Keyboard, an SH101 Synth and a Midi controller.
I'm planning to use this on a live gig. I mainly use Mainstage samples which I control with my MIDI keyboard, but I also send my Nord and SH101 synth through Mainstage (on 2 audio channel strips), in order to add some effects.
Most patches have between 4 and 6 channel strips and I use 12 patches in total. There's no Space Designer anywhere, I only use ONE reverb (PlatinumReverb) and of course EQ, compression etc on most channel strips...
Things went well during the rehearsals, untill I added the audio channel strips. While, except for a reverb send and some eq, I didn't add any heavy plugins to those tracks, my CPU meter is now constantly between 60 and 100% IF I'M NOT PLAYING!. If I AM playing, it struggles not to get in the red zone, but fails after a few seconds.
Is this normal? I wouldn't hope so, because I can't imagine nobody would be able to use such a (fairly) simple setup. It's not dead easy, but I also feel I shouldn't be pushing things to the limits already with this.
As far as I know, there are no other programs running in the background (except for Airport). I checked "About This Mac" and there were a bunch of programs that seemed to launch at startup of my system, but I wouldn't know which ones are safe to delete from that list and how to do that AND (more important): if that would make any difference at all...
Any help would be more than welcome, concert is in 2 weeks
    Thanks!
    Senne

It might be worth thinking about upgrading to Leopard. It was problematic when it first came out, but many of the performance issues have been resolved, and a lot of people have reported even better performance with it now than Tiger.
Pan is right too - turn off your Airport card and see if that make any difference. Before that update came out, people were reporting huge differences in performance between having it on and off. Even if you do have that update, try it anyway.
Another thing to think about would be putting a 7200 speed internal hard drive in your Macbook. They're pretty cheap these days (don't know where in the world you are, but I'm in the US and just bought a 320gb 7200 speed internal hd for my Macbook Pro for less than 200 bucks!), and on those Macbooks they're REALLY easy to swap out. You don't need to take anything apart, just take out the battery, a little bar that covers up the Ram and HD, and slide it right out. This would definitely improve performance over the 5400rpm drive you probably have in there now.
    Good Luck!

  • How to send patch level program changes from concert level instruments?

    Heya,
Here's the gist of my setup:
I have two concert level external instrument channel strips (Nord Electro 3 and Prophet 8 module). I am attempting to change the bank on the Electro 3 on a per patch basis. It seems as if the concert level nature of the channel strip is overriding my ability to change on a per patch basis. I am sending out a program change on a certain patch, and it is being reflected in all of the other patches across the concert (this is expected behaviour from reading the manual).
I've been looking for a way to manually send the program changes on a per patch basis (for these concert level strips), using some sort variation of the override parent setting, but I've been unsuccessful at finding a method for doing this. Is it even possible?
The behaviour I'm looking to replicate is easily accomplished by manually creating the external instrument channel strip in each of the patches, and then sending out the appropriate program change message. This isn't a problem to do. It is, however, a tad bit cumbersome and sort of defeates the purpose (in my opinion) of having concert level channel strips.
    Any wisdom would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Nick

As far as I know the only way to send program changes is to create channel strips in every patch. I don't use concert level channel strips for that reason.
One of the advancements is that you can level your external instrument on patch level.
Tip: create one patch with the channel strips you need and duplicate that one (CMD-D) to create new patches. Works faster for me.

  • I made a MS patch-changer selecting ANY patch FROM MY KEYBOARD'S KEYS!

Love the Nord Electro 3, hate the sequential up-down button for patch changes, especially with up to 20 per song. Almost decided to sell it and go back to the Nord Stage I had before, sacrificing sound quality for rapid and flexible patch changing abilities, but I just made a MainStage-based patch changer for the Nord Electro 3 that can select any Nord patch from the Nord's keyboard. So Cool! Chances are I keep this beloved Nord now!!!
I've recieved so much help that I'm trying to be a giver here ....though maybe this is rookie stuff to the people here, it was a new level for me, so maybe it'll help someone....
It took a long time to figure out, but I decided finally not to worry about changing various (not sequential) MainStage patches from keyboard keys because I couldn't find a way, but just to make a way to choose NE patches WITH THE Nord's KEYS SENDING WHATEVER PROGRAM CHANGES needed to select a patch no matter where it is in the Nord -- this way I could choose any patch easily from the Nord keyboard keys instead of sequentially stepping through patches with two mapped up/down MS keys, or with the Mac's arrows, or hunting for a computer keyboard button.
I learned the bottom 8 keys of the Nord into 8 buttons in MS, then for each button mapped it to Send to All --> Nord Electro (destination) --> Program Change. Then I "mapped parameter" to whatever Program change number would select the patch where it's sitting in the Nord's patch banks. If it was PC 9 then the values would be 9 and 9. Pressing that keyboard key (F#0 in my case) while playing and having MS in Perform Mode would then switch my Nord to patch 5-B in the Electro, which is the Nord's PC9 location. It was a little tricky to figure out that I best go into the parameter graph and change the top and bottom numbers to 9, in this case. For some reason it defaults to 8 bottom and 9 top if choosing PC 9 outside the graph. It took some mousing sometime to get them the same.
Note: NO patch changer in layout, NO channel strips, JUST the keyboard and the 8 buttons. Also for some odd reason it does NOT work in Edit mode, MS has to be in Perform or Full Screen mode.
Granted, the number of patches you can choose is limited to the number of keyboard keys you want to reserve for this purpose. If I can give up more keys I might do 8 more to get 16 program-changing keys.
Anyway it's great to be able to choose whatever sound I want in the Electro 3 instantly without having to madly push an up/down button on the rig -- organ, Shodes, Mellotron, choir sample, no matter where it happens to reside in the Nord's banks. Cool!
What I couldn't figure out but might do next is to see if there's a way to use this tool, but also choose a MainStage synth patch or three from Program-changing keys without disrupting the works. I tried for a long time but couldn't find a mapping that would send something that would end up giving me a particular PC-mapoped Nord+MainStage layer -- that's probably to much. So I might default to also having a field with a patch changer window, a couple keyboard keys mapped to up/down, and just choosing up or down instead of a particular patch number or name. Dunno.
I can post or e-mail the concert if it helps anyone.
    Neil

You may have to call back and tell the answering party you have an
existing open case involving a repair; tell them the 'case number' or
'incident number' assigned your initial repair by AppleCare, and say
if there is a problem, you've already paid; and 'please connect me to
    the supervisor.'
A logic board issue could certainly be the cause of bizarre keyboard errors.

  • Is this a good keyboard?

I've been searching for an 88 midi keyboard controller with hammer action and I found the studiologic VMK 188 Plus and I'm feeling it's what I'm going to get. Just want to know what others feel about this product. Any thought's would be appreciated thanks.

You can make a MIDI connection via a MIDI interface to use the Nord as a keyboard controller for Software Instruments, as you appear to have discovered, or you can use the audio outputs via an audio inteface to record the Nord's own sounds onto an audio track in Logic.
If you have a MIDI connection both ways (in to out and out to in) and also an audio connection you can use an External Instrument track to record and play back MIDI data - this gives you the advantage of being able to edit the MIDI data and when you're ready you can then arm the relevant audio track and let it play through to record your part, which is probably the best option. You haven't said what you're using as far as interfaces go, so its a general response which hopefully will give you an idea.
Nord, mmm - nice gear that...
(Edit - DataStream got there just before me with a succinct explanation, hopefully both will help).

  • Assigning Pads in MainStage AKAI MPD18

Hey all, I'd consider myself a new but fairly competent user of Logic and not completely computer illiterate, but I've been playing around for about an hour now and I can't seem to find a forum or google result which is working for me.
In short: I want to fix the incorrect assignment of the pads (1 through 16) to  the correct order.
    The details:
I've recently been tasked with playing drums and some samples on an AKAI MPD18 using MainStage. I presumed it would be similar to my Nord Electro setup wise, plug it in and pick a patch essentially. However, Whilst the pads are recognised and all appear to work, The order is all jumbled up and the bottom left pad doesn't seem to make a sound unless I switch the unit to "Bank" B or C. I've been mainly focusing on the "assignments and mapping" screen but the buttons don't seem to do much (Assign and map in the toolbar just takes me to a redundant window which doesn't let me assign or map anything relevant, only some niche settings).
I've downloaded the AKAI software for mac which offers these patch options:
    Pgm03-Prog01-48
    Pgm04-Prog49-96
    Pgm02-GM_MPC
    Pgm01-Chromatic
[and all the different major scales]
I'm using the first preset so far to no avail. MainStage 3 on a Macbook Pro with OSX Mavericks. If I've missed any details please don't hesitate to ask and ill try to fill int the gaps! Thanks in advance everyone!

    Hi p.lawrence,
For your questions seems like just a question of right configuration of the MPD18. Probably the botton left (and maybe others) are configure to send midi other channel, or to send CC and not note. But with the AKAI software may be easy to solve it (just configure those pads). If you then need help to configure with MS just ask.
    Hope it helps you

  • How can I use my UC-33e as a drawbar controller for EVB3 in Mainstage?

    Hi,
I am a complete noob when it comes to Mainstage. I've been using Logic for close to a year now with relatively few problems, but I am stumped when it comes to MS, for a couple of issues anyway. Here's one:
I use various software B3 emulations - EVB3, B4 and VB3. I use my Evolution UC-33e controller as the drawbars controller. I use this in Logic with no problem, took me a minute or two to figure how to set up the EVB3 but it all works great - in Logic.
I was thinking that MS was basically Logic minus the recording and sequencing, but as for now that doesn't appear to be the case. I have my keyboard and the UC-33e both transmitting on Ch 1. When I call up the Jazz Organ patch (for example), I can still go into EVB3 and set it to recognize the NI controller set (which is what the UC-33e transmits), but when I move the drawbar controllers I will get patch changes, parameter changes, but nothing relating to the EVB3. I can go into layout mode and get the Drive control to work, as 'Distort Drive' is one of the parameters that are available on the layout for this patch, so I know it can work.
Do I have to create a new layout that contains the controllers on UC-33e? I want to at least be able to use the drawbars, Leslie fast/slow, volume & drive.
I'm also curious to know why this setup works with no problems in Logic but not in MS. I have 3 weeks to get MS set up correctly, but if I'm still having trouble in a week I'll just use Logic - I know that will work!

I think I'll make it easy on myself. No MS, just NI. I'm using two keyboards. I'll use the Pro-53 for synth sounds, and have it set to see my little Arturia controller. I'll have Akoustik Piano and the B4 running on my 76-key controller, and since the B4 is set to run on Ch 1, I'll set AP to run on Ch 16 and just toggle back and forth using the MIDI buttons on my controller. If I need a Wurly or Clav I can boot up Elektrik Piano and set it to a different channel. Of course I can still use my UC-33e for the B4 as the drawbar controller as well.
It's not elegant and I won't get to use channel strips or effects but it is way easy to set up, it gives me the sounds I need for classic rock, and most importantly, it works
