'normal' battery performance MacBook pro

I have recently bought a 'replacement' battery of nominal capacity 5800 aMh. When 1st fitted it actually had a capacity of 5530 and registered 2 cycles expended. I thought maybe do a calibration; it then dropped to 5337 and 3 cycles expended.
1: is that normal, ie some reduction on pre-sale testing and further minor reduction on each cycle?
2: the original battery seemed shot (down to 1500 mHa) after only 65 cycles (after 30 months) as I rarely use the computer on battery and only found out that you should periodically recalibrate when it was too late - so is it a compromise between doing deliberate recalibration and losing a bit of capacity a little at a time and not doing it often enough and the battery deteriorating on its own
3: from other posts, it seems that even original apple store batteries fail within guarantee period, so (a) is it worth paying over double the price for one? (the replacement also carrying a 1 year warranty)
4: I don't think battery use is really viable for heavy processor use progs like Nikon Capture NX2 (and I imagine CS4 would be even worse); its really more for the convenience of not having to shut down during journeys & as a portable notebook. Would we better off with the option of a Lithium ion battery that seems to last longer - my G4 powerbook one still seems fine with 5121 mHa after 260 cycles over 9 years

Is it normall for a Macbook Pro 13" retina 2 weeks old to overheat during browsing web pages ?
i just brought a new MacBook Pro 13" Retina ( Dual Core i5 2.6GHz , 8GB Ram , 512GB Flash Storage ) and i notes that its really get OVERHEAT on the top right side of the keyboard and the fans work loudly when i brows web or play a game ( CSR Racing ) , it get heat that when i touch the top right side of the keyboard ( the aluminum body on top of the bower key exactly ) i cant keep my finger for morethan 10 or 15 second ..
and the battery wont last for morethan 4 or 5 hours while it supposed to last for 9 hours according to Apple.
so guys is this normal ?
    Thanks ,

i've did some search on the same issue and it really seems like everyone have it , even thou at apple reseller showroom here in Doha-Qatar the sales man told me this a such issue in the retina macbooks and apple has admit it and you must take it to the service center and change it , while at the service center said a totally different things and that its fine to get heat ..
in meanwhile my way back i pass by another apple reseller showroom and they clearly said if ur mack gets heat u must go and change it ...
im really lost and i have no idea whats goin on here and whom should i listen to .. i hope someone from APPLE support will read this and reply us whats goin on ?

  • Swollen battery on macbook pro 17"

swollen battery on macbook pro 17", laptop running hot, can I remove the battery and still use my computer with ac adapter? Also, what is normal temp for laptop?

Yes, you can remove the battery, but if we're talking about a unibody system, you'll need to take it somewhere to have it removed. The batteries are locked in by a rather unique screw. That's because the under side of the battery is soft and can be easily punctured.
But you can have it removed and keep on using it. It will obviously shut off immediately if power is lost, but otherwise there's no issue. And a normal temp is that the system should only feel slightly warm to the touch.

  • After a year of no use and a fully discharged battery, my MacBook Pro refuses to accept the administrator name and the password. How can I reset these?

After a year of no use and a resulting fully discharged battery, the MacBook Pro refuses to recognize the administrator name and password (both). It has system OS X 10.6 which can not be upgraded without the information. How can I reset or reistall the administrator name and password?

Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • Is it normal for my macbook pro to buzz when i turn it on?

    hello everyone!
I am one of the many people that got a mac for christmas this year.  when I opened it, it looked like a normal macbook.  after setting it up I messed with it a little to see what i could find (i used microsoft prior to this all my life; and im only 15).  i was on it all that day, it started getting late so i decide to shut it down because i was sure i wasnt going to use it for a while.  so about 3 days after i opened it i turn it back on, and to my surprice it made a wierd buzzing sound.  i showed my dad and his thoery was that it could be like a fan or some other thing that spins inside.  i ignored it, and now every time i turn it back on it does that.  i have notice that it doesnt do it when i wake it up only when i boot it up.  can anyone help me, please!!!  i need to know if i got a deffective one so that i can take it back to apple.
BTW its a macbook pro 13" and it is the basic-off-the-self modle.  i havent upgraded anything or opened it up.

The sound you're hearing may be the optical disk drive sort of 'whirring' at start-up. If that's what it is, that's perfectly normal - you're MacBook Pro is just 'checking' to see if there's a disc in the drive when it boots.
If you don't think that it's the typical optical drive 'whirring', then take your machine into your local Apple store or an AASP and have them diagnose the machine... but I'm thinking that what you're hearing is the optical drive.
    Good luck,

  • HT3053 How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

How long should I charged new battery in MacBook pro?

You can leave it plugged in all the time if you wish.
Once your Macbook is fully charged, it stops charging.
You can see this if you click on your apple logo, about this mac, more info, system report, power.
In any event, it is also a good idea to use your Macbook under it's own power to keep the battery in optimal condition.
As much as possible, try not to fully discharge your battery.  It could do more harm than good to your Macbook.
Good luck and enjoy your macbook

  • Upgrade Ram, HD to SDD and New Battery for Macbook pro 2010 i7 15". (with price).

Hi, i want to upgrade my Ram, Hard Disk and Battery of Macbook pro 2010 Model with i7 processor and 15" display.
    My current configuration:
Ram: 2GB + 2GB (original with mbp purchase)
Hard Disk: 500 GB (250 GB full)
Battery: Cycles - 669 and Health - 87 % (As show by istat)
    New configuration I want:
Ram: 8 Gb best of all (what to do with the previous 2GB + 2GB Ram)
SSD:Minimum 128 Gb ( what to do with previous 500 GB

I ignored the (with price) part. Sorry.
    Crucial m4 512GB SSD - from Amazon - $389.99.
    Crucial m4 256GB SSD - from Amazon - $203.84.
    Crucial m4 128GB SSD - from Amazon - $112.87.
    Crucial 8GB RAM for 2010 15" MacBook Pro - from Crucial - $47.99.
What to do with your old RAM? Just trash it or label it and put it in an anti-static bag and put it in your 'parts' drawer. Or trash it. Or give it away. It's not worth anything.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Battery in MacBook Pro

Is it possible to change the battery in any of the new MacBook Pro's?

Not for users. An Apple Store or AASP can perform the replacement. But, that should not be necessary for several years (of 'normal' use).

  • Low performance -macbook pro 13'' early 2011-

Hello everyone, i'm Alessio, an assiduous Apple user since Imac G3 passing by Mac Mini, Imac, Macbook and Macbook pro.
Today i decided to ask for help because i noticed that my macbook pro isn't very fast, however not fast as it was fresh out-of-the-box.
I already cleaned up all the space possible, checked for duplicate fonts, performed several cleans with "clean my mac" and "Onyx". Checked the disk for error with Disk Utility, but the situation hasn't changed.
The final test was the comparison of my macbook pro with my cousin's Imac (2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo, 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM with OSX 10.6.8). My macbook takes way more time that the Imac to start, same story with the shutting down time. How is it possible?
    Best Regards,
    Alessio
PS: i bought my macbook in september 2011 with extended warranty.
Edit: i paste here a log from Activity Monitor, these results were take just after the boot, with no applications running.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are several lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” (without the quotes) and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/ {print $6 $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple/ {print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple/ {print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get the name of every login item'
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Is this sleep light behavior normal w/ a MacBook Pro?

This is the deal. I just purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel core 2 Duo and I've noticed that the 'sleep light' comes on and stays on when I have my Cinema Display plugged in with the laptop cover closed down (so, therefore, I'm using just the external monitor, not the MBP's screen). It isn't 'sleeping' (it's not pulsing in and out as it does when it goes to sleep), but the light comes on steady whenever I close the lid regardless that the MBP is completely awake and being used with an external monitor.
I also noticed that while I was in the process of migrating data from my powerbook to the MBP, when the screen went dark (non-activity) over time, though the computer was transferring data via firewire, that when the MBP screen did go dark the sleep light immediately turned on. When I moved the mouse or touched a key of course the screen came back and then the sleep light went out. I was very surprised with this. IS THIS NORMAL FOR A [brand new] MACBOOK PRO? Did apple change things from how the PowerBooks were set up?
With my powerbook, the sleep light only comes on when it's ACTUALLY SLEEPING and then it pulses. It doesn't come on steady when the lid is closed. So this is quite different from what I'm used to and want to know what is supposed to be happening with the MBP.
The MBP goes to sleep properly in the various situations I've put it in. So far it functions properly. Except for this sleep light issue. And after doing some reading here I found there to be a number of issues with the MBP's 'sleep' and/or power management systems. And I'd like to know from other MBP users - Is this steady sleep light normal when the laptop screen is 'not in use' tho the computer is still ON and working?
Anyone notice any of these things as well? Your timely responses are much appreciated. I decided to ask here first, as I often find other users as knowledgeable and helpful as any resource out there. Thanks in advance.
BTW, and this is a side note: But I didn't install the battery update (I think it's 1.3?) for my MBP because of the scores of issues I've read about it thus far. Your thoughts on installing the update are also appreciated, if you have any.
    Regards, Elizabeth

You have a macbook pro too (as noted), does this happen with yours? If apple changed things and it's normal, like as you stated that it was lite so you'd know you're computer is 'on' but I'd like to know for sure if that's what it's supposed to be doing. (nip it in the bud if there's a problem)
I know it isn't sleeping (not pulsing) but since the light is on (steady), it is something I noticed right away. For example, right now as I type this, with the MBP on my desk w/ the cinema display plugged in (w/ a keyboard) and the lid is closed on the MBP, the light is ON right now. Not pulsing, but a steady light. Doesn't seem like it should be, to me. (at least in my view)
    Thanks for your reply Josh.

  • Using ac power adapter vs. battery on MacBook Pro

I purchased a 15 inch MacBook Pro with retina display a couple months ago.  Most of the time I use it with the ac power adapter.  Is there any harm to the battery life if I never left the battery drain down some and then recharge it? I have come to understand that when the battery is fully charged and plugged in to an outlet the battery is basically on standby.
    Thanks

If you use it mostly on AC, then once every one or two months you should use it on the battery until the battery runs down to about 20%. Then reconnect the AC so the battery can recharge.

  • Is removing battery in MacBook Pro 13" advisable?

Can I remove the battery form my MacBook Pro 13" when it is running on AC power? Isn't it charging and discharging decrease battery life? Is battery calibration needed when replacing?

Yes, but you should not. If you do then you no longer have backup power in case of an outage. Your computer will also throttle down to half-power if no battery is present. Lastly, it doesn't do anything to prolong the battery's life.

  • Battery problem MacBook Pro 13" 2012???

    Hello everybody!!
I just bought the Macbook Pro 13" Intel Core i5 Non-Retina exactly one week ago. I downloaded coconutBattery 2.8. It says my current battery capacity already dropped down from 5770 mAh (the design capacity) to 5308 mAh. That's 462 mAh in one week. That makes that my battery capacity drowned from 100% to 92% in one week. Is that normal or should I go back to the Apple Premium Reseller?

Not normal - after almost nine months (OK, so I've only had it eight months but my MBP was manufactured in the first week of February) here's what cocoanut Battery shows me:
99% current capacity. Take it back to your reseller and have them run diagnostics on the battery - you shouldn't be at 92% in a week's time.
