Normal CPU temperature range

I'm curious if anyone knows what the normal CPU temperature range is for a Macbook? I just installed istatpro so I can now check it. The current CPU temp is 140F and the fan is at 1,500 rpm. At what temp does the fan kick into a higher speed?

The normal range is about 30º-85ºC depending upon CPU and GPU loads. Maximum is 125ºC at which point thermal shutdown occurs (your machine will shut down.) The fans change speed with temperature according to a hard-coded table (not firmware encoded.) The older Core Duo laptops such as yours have a lower fan idle speed than the newer models. Although not supported by Apple you can install third-party software that can be used to increase the fan's idle speed - Fan Control or SMC FanControl. Use at your own risk. The subsequent laptop models now use an idle speed around 2,000 RPM which tends to keep the machines a little cooler. However, this has no effect on when the fan will ramp up to higher revs. The software only raises the idle speed.

Normal CPU Temperature? Very Hot here...

My normal CPU temperature, according a widget I have installed on my Dashboard is around 150-160 degree F (with spikes up to 177 F). My fan is constantly whining and turning on and off even when I just have Safari open.
I tried using apple's new "chat" feature, and the chat support agent only ended up suggesting that I call in and possibly schedule an on-site visit.
What is your normal temperature? I'd like to have some basis for comparing, and also, what software do you use to measure the temperature?

Its hard to determine a normal temp for the cpu. It appears that the baseline is:
cpu 140F fan 1500rpm
HD 120-130F fan 2000rpm
Syst fan 1500 rpm
Once the cpu starts to do a little work it throws off a lot of heat (Apple's nemesis) and the variable speed fans start to wind up. At some cpu temp, and I don't know what that is, the machine shuts down and at that point the fans are working their cans off and getting nowhere. Apples solution to this problem, is Intel. In the mean time they will placate you and look at your machine but they not going to spend a lot of time or money on a fix now. They got the look they wanted, and I love it, but the trade off is a little fan noise that we are going to have to live with.

Intel Dual-Core CPU temperature Range?

I am a bit puzzled by exactly what is the reasonable temperature range for an Intel Dual-Core CPU. I currently own a PPC MacMini which never goes above 43C. I also have a system with Athlon64 and the CPU doesn't go over 50C. The number of 80C just seems unreasonable.
While I can understand some people think the high temperature is ok as long as the surface is not uncomfortable to touch, I can't help but wondering what effect it has to the CPU itself; or to the other components.
Anyone knows where to find such information (operating temperature range) from Intel?

You are familar with desktop processors and their associated temperatures. It is fairly common for notebooks CPUs to run anywhere between 50C - 80C. Intel specs the Core processors to 100C before the CPU starts throttling down to reduce the CPU temp.

Normal CPU Temperature

Hi. I'm worried about my MacMini (4.1) working tempature. Most of the time CPU is about 60-65 Celsius (Fans - 1800 rpm), and on the hard work it could go up to 80-85 Celsius (On 70-75 fans start rotates as crazy - 2500-3000 rpm). Is it normal? Maybe it need some routine maintenance?

HDD - 45
CPU - 60
CPU Heatsink - 55
AirPort Card - 50

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
One reason temps can increase on a mini is that the air vents at the base get clogged up over time. Get a vacuum hose on the vents to ensure they are clear. I recall one person's cat like to lay next to the mini, which clogged the air vents.
If that doesn't fix it, bring up the Activity Monitor (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and see if any program is driving CPU utilization high. If CPU utilization is high but no program is driving it, check to see if you have any printer jobs that didn't complete.

Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 CPU temperature issues while gaming (99 celsius) Is this normal ?

Hello everyone, this is my first time here. I recently purchased a macbook pro retina late 2013 notebook just over a month ago. It seems to be working just fine. I've installed bootcamp and installed windows 7. I use Speccy for my temperature monitor. I've played DayZ Standalone as well as L4D2. I noticed while playing both games on their lowest settings the CPU temperature consistently stays in the 90 degree celsius range often reaching 99 degrees celsius. I am fairly tech saavy and have a decent knowledge of computers.I bought the ThermaPak Heatshift pad in hopes of cooling it down but to no avail as it only does a great job at cooling everything else. This is my first laptop so I treat it like my baby ! haha I was wondering if these temp readings are normal because I know that even reaching 70 celsius can be somewhat damaging. So I just got back from the apple store and wow, what rude service. The guy basically shrugged when I told him "Well, I guess Im stuck with it huh?" after he told me there was no way I could get a refund. He performed a test and told me everything was fine and told me in a very arrogant manner that the test isn't showing the results I told them about as if I was lying....***? He said they can send it away for a few weeks but I don't have any other computer and I just bought this one for school so I can't afford to have it gone for that long. He told me "doesn't your school have a computer lab"? Seriously, how can someone at Apple be this rude? I told him they do but its closed at 7 and I dont live on campus. How could a computer lab replace a personal computer? He basically kept shrugging rudely anytime I tried to find a solution. He didn't even reply with a single word. When I told him I called the call center and they told me that yes it is much too hot and to take it to the store after doing a fix he just chuckled and rolled his eyes. Really? I spent 1500 dollars on this computer to not even be able to do basic things on it without it overheating and the service is this bad? Well, looks like I won't ever be buying an apple product again even though before this experience I was a huge fan of all their products. I know one customer doesnt make a difference to them but come on...looks like I'm stuck with it and apple couldnt give one care. If having your hands uncomfortably hot after a small amount of time is acceptable then it looks like I'll never be buying another laptop from them. Its a shame I really liked it at first.

CPU operating Temperature range

Looking for the CPU operating temperature range. Not the ambient operating temperature range, but the range the CPU is allowed to run at.
My CPU has been nearing 175° F.
Macbook still runs great.
This is an early 2006 model with the intel core duo 2GHz

I believe the lower limit is 32F and the upper limit 212F. At 212F it will trigger thermal shutdown.

Huge CPU temperature, low fan rpm, is it normal?

I'm a new mac user, I have a new macbook 2.0Ghz, 4GB Ram and a hdd 160Gb.
I compared the temperatures of my mac with other macs and my values are huge.
In normal CPU usage I get 60ºC, but when I turn on my virtual machine the CPU temp can go to 84ºC and the fan is only at 3265rpm!
For example, now I got CPU usage of 70% and it's at 80ºC and the fan is at 2456rpm, is it normal?
Above there is a list of CPU temp and respectively fan rpm
84ºC - 3265rpm
80ºC - 2427rpm
78ºC - 2004rpm
60ºC - 2000rpm
45ºC - 1998rpm
40ºC - 2001rpm

Hello All, I have a early 2008 Macbook 4.1, with a 2.1 Ghz, 4G ram, and a 7200 RPM HD, and I am also frequently between 60-85 deg C. (140 - 185 deg F.)
My fans runs between 1800 rpm up to 6200 at higher CPU temps.
Sometimes I wonder if running the Macbooks wifi, bluetooth, and an external 24" monitor, increases the interior temp?
I have had on occasion, doing some encoding with a slew of programs running, had the temp up to 96 deg C (205 deg F), and it still was running fine, mind you I was freaking out.
But when I checked on the Intel site for max CPU temp for my model processor T8300, it said that it was 105 deg C as the maximum. 105 deg C converts to which is 221 deg F.
I figure that they must have some kind of CPU shutdown/slowdown mechanism so if it gets too hot.
And if it doesn't, my 3 year AppleCare will have to deal with it.
I am more interested in the Hard Drive temp, since if that cooks, there goes my "restore plan" into action. But it generally stays around 90 - 100 deg F.
My buddy has an iMac, and it runs between 70-100 deg F. Go figure, it's cold as ice

Not the best gaming machine, but if your fans kick in and keep the temperature stable, you're ok in the short term. Over time, heat will degrade the battery prematurely and lessen the life of other components.
Keep it well ventilated.

What is the correct operating temperature range for the various iMac models?

In our organization, we opperate approximately 20 mac systems (3-4 years old) with users performing a range of tasks using applications that range from 3D Design and graphics programs to MS Word and Outlook. There is concern that the systems (specifically iMacs) are running too hot and we've had a couple 'die'. Does anyone know of a list of acceptible opperating temperature ranges for Apple Computer systems? I am using a Mid-2010 3.2ghz Intel Core i3, with 8gb ddr3 and an ATI Radeon HD 5670 512mb graphics card, I have a 1 TB SATA that currently has 732GB's of free space. Below are my systems current temp readings using "Temperature Monitor" by Marcel Bresink.
Has anyone else had issues with current Apple Computers overheating and dying?

My PC CPU temperature is 43C when idle. But it rises up to 60C when under load.
The system temperature ranges from 35 to 38 depending on system load.
I have double checked CPU fan, it is perfectly attached.
CPU clock is 3.0 GB 1MB, 512 DDR1 @ 400 MHz
I am running the system on the default clocks (No overclocking).
3 Fans for system cooling.
Is this normal temperature?

Tweak the balance between fan speed and CPU temperature / Dell M6400?

I have a Dell Precision M6400 17" laptop. It runs really well on Arch, but is a bit noisy. It has always been noisy, btw, but I recently noticed that the CPU fan was blowing a lot of air even though the CPU temperature is lower than 70°C. I also have a macbook air, and its CPU runs at 70°C all the time, which seems to be normal. I would like my m6400 to behave similarly, and I'm sure someone here know how to change that

When I start the laptop, its CPU fan stays at its minimal speed only for 1 or 2 minutes, then increases its rotation speed to a second level. It reaches it maximal speed only under heavy load, when the CPU reaches >80-95°C. I would rather let the CPU run a bit hotter before the fan starts to blow: let's say the fan could enter its intermediary speed between 70°C and 85°C instead of 55-80°C, and blow at is its maximum speed beyond that.
I checked the Fan Speed Control wiki page, but lm-sensors is not able to show me the status of the fans. Any idea ?

PS: the temperature of the GPU is not reported by sensors, and nvidia-settings reports around 60°C. Its dedicated fan is very quiet.

I'm in the same situation from at least 1 month ( INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME X9100, 3.06GHz with 8GB ram, one solid state disk 128 GB, and one sata disk 500GB)
My dell M6400 has dual boot: ubuntu and windows7. The fan works a lot and continuosly in both environment and this is the reason because I have doubt that the origin of the problem is in hardware problem?

I'm using macbook pro retina 13inch 2013 late version.
my macbook has NO external graphic card, just iris graphic.
when i was playing diablo3 or watching movie by using bypass ip address, my cpu temperature was maintained 90~100 celcius degrees.
And at the same time, my cooling fan was maintained 5800~6000 rpm.
There are two questions.
One, is my macbook temperature too high or normal level ?
Two, i know that 6200rpm is maximum speed of cooling fan. Why did fan run 5800~6000rpm, not maximum?

When processor intensive activities are taking place, temperature may reach the maximum level.

Normal operating temperature - A31 2.0Ghz

I do not understand how designers ever thought that a machine that is only 80cm away from your ears can have a fan that it audible.
Nevertheless I am trying to use Thinkpad Fan Control (v0.18) to minimise my fan activity. Removing the battery or setting the BIOS to low speed "helps" but also means a higher load, and thus more heat!!
I am not sure if the idle CPU temperature without the fan running is normal around 58C. With the fan in BIOS mode it stays around 42C, but it still seems rather high to me. Is it possible that it needs new theral paste or the heat sink is not set well?

I guess this is some improvement:
on BIOS mode the CPU goes down to 33C in idle and will stay around in 51C with no fan using TPFC.
Straight writing in the word processor never makes the fan go on, but with 5+ tabs and my database open, it will go to 60C then start the fan. That probably means that watching video on this machine is a no go!
My sister, cat owner and thus good experience with cleaning out computers, took a look. She noticed that around the CPU there was a burnt capacitor C508. It ain`t broke so no fixing, but that may be related to the defective USB ports or why it will not run from the battery. She probably also tightened the fan or put the the thermal paste on better...
The update to Thinkpad Fan Control did not make much difference, but the interface is nicer. I tried the BIOS 1.13 but it was not accepted, but 1.10 went through fine. In either one there were no indications of changes to temperature control. Power here is stable but still a risk considering my battery (or motherboard) does not work.
As for running processes, I login in a restricted account to avoid having to install an anti-virus/spyware and I used CCleaner to diasable most startup programs, and lastly using services.msc, I disabled a few that I never use. (wifi – automatic updates- help)

Standard operating temperature ranges

Where can I find the standard operating temperature ranges?
I download the iStat widget last week and it gives me a list of the temps of different parts of my machine, but I'm not sure when they're running hot versus running cool or normal. I'm not having any problems, just curious.
