Normal download speeds, incredibly slow browsing

I've got an airport extreme that I've been having problems with. I get some pretty fast download speeds when downloading a file from Safari or Firefox, anywhere between 150kb/s and 300kb/s. However, my internet browsing speed is at a crawl. It can take between 30 seconds and 1 minute to load Apple's homepage whether I'm using Safari or Firefox. Can someone help me out with this? Are there some settings I need to change? Thank you!

I was having the same problem as you. I recently (tonight) installed a new Extreme N and was noticing that this was happening.
Even Google's website was taking a while to load. What I did is changed the DNS servers from AT&T's to public ones. I'm using 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2 and this seems to have corrected the problem. Browsing is back to normal speeds, but I'd be skeptic to call this a "fix", since it's been about 20 minutes since I made the chance, so I'm not sure if this will really fix it, but if you want to try it you've got nothing to lose.
Let me know if it helps!

  • UK Download Speeds Incredibly Slow

Hi, I am just about ready to give up...my download speeds through the iTunes store are appauling - upto about 700kBps.  I am on a 100Mb connection and this works fine everywhere else.  For info, the speed through itunes store is horrendous on all my systems.
I see loads of people reporting speed issues but no answers from apple from all around the world - I am in the United Kingdom.
What is going on?  I have paid a lot of money for all this kit and I would hope to get a decent service from it.
    Thanks.

    Anyone please?

  • Incredibly slow browsing despite line speed of 3.5...

For about the last week I've had incredibly slow browsing. When I run the BT speed checker it comes back at between 3.5M and 4M. It's like the data is broken up into chunks which are separated by a lot of time. It's like the bad old days of dialup.
The speed tester comes back and said
    download speed was 3692Kbps
    range 1000-7150Kbps
DSL connection rate 4672Kbps downstream and 888Kbps upstream
    IP profile 4000Kbps

Are there any other tests or web sites, I should visit to try and establish what's going on, before I bite the bullet and report it as a fault?
I'm running Windows XP on a homehub 1 connected with an Ethernet cable and IE8

Sorry I didn't reply straight away it got so bad I couldn't do anything, so I reported it as afault.
I was told there was a fault in the exchange and someone would call me.
No-one has called me back,  but overnight the problem seems to have gone.

  • Download speed will slow to nothing. Must continually manually pause and resume to force the connection to the download to complete. How to fix?

Have recently tried to download multiple files from multiple locations. These files will show up as downloading in the download manager. After 5-10 seconds, the download will slow to a crawl. In the window for the download manager, it will state that the download still has a download speed. When reviewing the time and progress, as well as monitoring my actual inbound/outbound internet traffic, I can conclude the download does not have any actual download speed remaining (that is, 0 kilobytes/sec).
To complete the download, I must manually click on the file being downloaded, force it to pause and then force it to resume. This will cause the download to actually download again for about 5-10 seconds before the download manager states that the download speed is slowing down (when in fact it goes back to 0 kilobytes/sec). This process must be repeated until the file is fully downloaded.
Also observed is that there will suddenly be more of a connection, downloading just a bit of the file, before going back to 0 kbps. This will happen every so often and is much slower than manually pausing/resuming. If left to its own devices for long, it also has a chance that it will decide that the file is complete and report that it has the full file size of the download. Review of the actual downloaded file shows that the file is incomplete for the supposed size of the download.
This should not be an issue with internet usage. There is no inbound/outbound traffic for my connection when the download speeds hit 0kbps. Loading webpages during this time load fine, only the download is unstable.

Problem Solved!!! :) No need Of Any AntiVirus !
Got back into '''Firefox 5.0.1''' !!
    Its Working Great!

  • Time capsule download speeds are slow

    iMac <======>Time capsule (bridge mode) <=====> 10/100 ethernet switch <====> Comcast router/modem Arris TG862
Multiple iDevices are wirelessly connected to Time capsule because Arris TG862 couldn't handle more than 10 wireless devices without kicking them off.
Time capsule is in bridge mode, 4th gen, 7.6.4.
Have been running this configuration for over a year and download speeds @ 50Mbs for the iMac that is wired to the time capsule and an iMac that is wirelessly connected to time capsule.  AppeTV is hardwired to 10/100 ethernet switch as well, and has never had a problem before download / streaming movies.
In the past week, the wired download speed of the iMac has crawled down to 5-6 Mbs.  Wireless connections are .5-1 Mbs.
I have unplugged all devices, waited 10 mins, plugged in router/modem, waited 5 mins, plugged in switch, waited 1 min, plugged in TC, waited 5 mins, ran a test on Speedtest.net - still getting 5 Mbs wired and slower on wifi.  If I unplug the ethernet cable from the TC (WAN) and plug it into the iMac directly, I get 57 Mbs download speed on Speedtest.net.  Why would the TC suddenly be slowing down download speeds.  In all configurations, the upload speed is still 10-11 Mbs.  It appears that only download speeds are affected.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I've tried moving the ethernet cable from the iMac to a different LAN port on the TC.  Same slow speed.  The wireless download speeds are slow too, seems like the WAN connection is "throttling" download speeds no matter if it's wired or wireless.
I have pressed the reset button on the back of the TC until the front light blinks amber.  Then I went thru the setup to have it connected Ethernet, Bridge mode, create a wireless network, and DHCP from the router.  I got 12 Mbs download speed for the wired connection after doing this the first time.  Fifteen minutes later I tested it again using Speedtest.net and the download speed for the wired connection had fallen to 5 Mbs.  I unplugged the TC, waited a half hour, held the reset button down while I plugged it in, went thru the setup again, and still had a download speed of only 4 Mbs when I was done.
I assumed if the switch on the TC went bad that it wouldn't work at all, not just be slow.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Extremely slow download speeds and internet browsing on Macbook pro

I recently got a 13"" macbook pro. System config - Maverick OS/i7 dual core/8GB RAM/750 GB HDD, Almost 690GB of free space available. I am expriencing extremely slow download and internet browsing speed. I have to wait for almost 10-12 seconds for normal sites to download. The app updates and downloads are painstakingly slow.
The internet speeds are working perfectly fine on my Windows Laptop, and even on my mobile phones. So, the there's no issue of network. Also, I have cleared safari cache etc, just to be sure. But nothing's really helping.
Can any one help me here.
    Thanks !
    Chetan

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Insanely slow upload speeds with normal download speeds -- can anyone help?

I have done LOTS of troubleshooting and I'm coming up blank. I've just moved from CA to HI and have a new ISP, but other machines in the house are not having this issue. I'm having a very difficult time figuring out why I can no longer upload files larger than 1 mb without lots of network stalling and eventual timeouts using most upload tools.
    Here are the facts:
    * It's only the upload speed: downloading is just fine on this machine.
    * This machine WAS fine: No problem with uploads from this machine before I moved from CA. I've had it for about a year.
    * Not the new cable internet: We also have a brand new Macbook Pro AND a PC using the same modem and connection and neither have trouble with upload speed.
    * It's not the tool, the file, or the server I'm trying to upload to: have tried uploading various files, using various web interface tools, to different servers, (flickr uploader, blog upload tool,) including ftp from the command line -- same upload problems. Command line ftp doesn't time out like these other services, but takes a really really long time with lots of stalls (7:13 minutes for 2.1 mb?!)
    * File sharing over our network between this machine and the Macbook Pro are lightning fast.
    * Behavior is the same using airport OR built-in ethernet (even tried two different ethernet cables)
    * Behavior is the same whether I use our internet connection or 'borrow' bandwidth from a neighbor's wireless connection (although I'm pretty sure everyone around here uses the same service?)
It seems to be some strange combination of this machine and my connection? I am stumped and really need to be able to upload files for working remotely!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    thanks,
    Enola

So after MUCH research and back-and-forth, it appears that my problem here is the upload bandwidth provided by our ISP. They acknowledge there is a problem in our area with upload speed (download speed is excellent) and are apparently working on it. I am still baffled as to why this problem is so much more obvious on my mac mini than my husband's macbook pro, but I'm sure it has to do with all kinds of different variables. We both tried some speedtest sites like the one you mentioned, and we both get crappy upload bandwidth and lots of stalling. At least I know it's not that my machine has something terribly wrong with it. For now, I am making do!
    thanks for your advice!

  • Why is the download speed so slow?

I have 100MB internet, and I am able to receive that speed with other applications. (I literally just tested with steam and got 9.1MB/s, at the same time as the Adobe download is running)
My Adobe download is 35 KB/sec or less, seriously guys? I don't intend to leave my PC downloading for 2 days just to get software!
I have tried both with the download manager (The download errored at 78% after I had left it running for about 6 hours) and now the browser (I've managed to get 1.6GB of the 5.8GB in 6 hours, currently running at 36.8KB/sec)
In the same time period I have downloaded the entire of GTA IV (15.6GB) and managed to play it for 5 hours!
Any idea what is causing it to be this slow or is the download service really this bad?

I'm using gigabit wired internet, with an appropriate network card and router, my firewall is completely disabled (both on my router and my pc) and I don't see why anti-virus should interfere with the download,
What is the general download speed normally received? Would you recommend using the browser download or the download manager?
I'm happy if this is just a "slow day" for adobe server or something, but my internet seems to be 100% fine as several other downloads I have tried have managed to get full speed even while the Adobe download is left running. (I obviously have had these other downloads off the majority of the time the adobe download has been running)
    Cheers for the response,
    Rob

  • Mac App Store download speed very slow...

I have been trying to download the App Store updates OS X Update 10.10.3 and OS X Yosemite Recovery Update to my iMac for the past several days.  When opening the Mac App Store, I click on updates and they appear.  However, when I select 'download' my download speed slows to the point of less than 1 MB per minute.
I seem to remember this happening when Yosemite was first released, but after a few days, I had no problem downloading Yosemite from the App Store.
This only occurs when trying to download from the Mac App Store.  When I download iOS App updates to iTunes I do not have the same problem so it seems to be only affecting the Mac App Store.
My internet speed is fine.  I can download fine from other websites, just not the Mac App Store.
After searching online, I found one solution that looked promising:
Finder->Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access->Preferences->Certificates->Certificate Revocation List- Changed from Best attempt to OFF.
Unfortunately for me this had no effect so I changed the setting back.
I then looked for a way I could download the files from outside the Mac App Store & found this:
       Apple - Support - Downloads
When downloading from Apple Support downloads page, my downloads were very fast.  The Yosemite 2 GB Combo update took about 15 minutes, a far cry from the App Store which would have taken hours.
Is there some setting I need to change to increase the download speed from the Mac App Store or is it just overloaded servers?  Why then can I download the files from the support page and not run into the same slow speeds?  Updating iTunes was also giving me very slow download speeds, so again, I went to the Apple Support Downloads & clicked the link to download the latest version of iTunes.  The file downloaded in about a minute.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Apple servers are overloaded. Instead of using App Store, use safari to download the updates manually from apple websites.
    Here's a link for OS X 10.10.2 Combo Update.
OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update
I had the same issue and downloaded manually from this link. It took me about 30-40 minutes. I'm using a 5mb connection. Your 40mb connection should be faster.
As for the iOS updates, you will have to download them from your iOS devices, because there are no standalone updates for iOS. Alternatively after you update your Mac, use iTunes to download iOS updates by connecting your iOS devices with your Mac. That should be faster than downloading through your iOS devices.

  • Download speeds extremly slow for CS6 trial version

I am trying to download the trial version of CS6 using the Adobe download assistant. It is extremely slow (Currently saying it will take another 15 hours to download.) It has been stuck at 987 MB for over two hours. I have a very fast fibre optic line and just did a speed test. I am seeing download speed of 75.79 Mbs so it is not my broadband. I am on Mac OS Lion 5.7.  and have plenty of empty disk space. Any ideas of what the problem is?

so it is not my broadband.
Actually it probably is. Due to how ADM work sthere may be issues on such connections due to how they handle upstream communication and may dynamically switch IPs/ channels in their multiplexers.... Try a direct download using the method described here:

  • [SOLVED] Download speed is slow while playing certain Steam games

This is a weird one: When playing Steam games my download speed (everywhere) drops to a fraction of what it should be (roughly 1/10th). My upload speed is unaffected.
I don't know how long this has been the case but I think it's fairly recent since when playing games I often tab out and do stuff on the net. I would've noticed.
This doesn't happen with Portal 2, Civ V, Guacamelee or Xcom but does happen with Rochard, Steamworks Dig, Gateways (2d puzzle platformer) and Awesomenauts. I was looking for a pattern but I fail to see one.
To be clear about the problem: If I start one of those games and tab out my download speed is 1/10th what it should be. If I exit the game my download speed returns to normal instantly.
I've checked for obvious stuff like Steam downloading in the background (it's not and nor is anything else - no unusual network activity at all). I've checked for mere coincidence - signal dropping/interference and so on and that seems not to be it either. It's also far too consistent and, as I say, upload is unaffected for some reason.
I don't even know what info to give with this one or how to begin tracking it down so any advice will be received gratefully.
I'm running Arch 64bit, all up to date.

Ok, well, I *think* I've sort of solved it:
I went through various wifi channels and found that the degree to which my download speed was reduced varied depending on the wifi channel I was on. So I left a game running and watched the download speed and the speed of my CPU and GPU as they clocked up/down and it seems that one of them is managing to interfere with the wifi signal. Or at least that's my best guess. High wifi channel numbers seem to be affected least (significantly so) so ... yeah.
I don't know if this makes sense technically (and no idea how I've never encountered it before) but... that's my guess.

  • My Macbook pro 2014 downloading speed is slow

Hello guys, I need help! I am new to Macbook, I was checking the internet speed on speedtest.net and my download speed was 11mbps. when I tried to download a movie it's  actually 33-100kbps. I don't know if the movie website is slow or my macbook is slow. Any suggestions?

Sounds as if the servers on the movie site are simply overloaded. It happens.

  • TS1398 Why Wireless Download Speeds so Slow?

My iPad 3, MacBookPro and Apple TV have been suffering with poor connection speeds lately. Connect the MacBook to the Internet using Ethernet and it works fine. Here's the funny thing, when I run speedtest from either device, my download speed is horrible, but the upload speed is normal for my ISP.
I'm suppose to get 10 down and 1 up. This data below is from the speedtest app on the iPad. As you can see, I don't run this app too often. What it does show the horrible numbers.
I've ruled out my ISP. I don't have another wireless router to check against, but before I go out and spend another hundred, I thought I would check if anyone else is experiencing this type of issue. NetGear, my router manufacture claims since the release of iOS 6, user have been experiencing connection issues.
If anyone at least can offer maybe additional tests, router settings, etc., I would greatly appreciate it.

You use 3g wifi with your computer? I don't think so. I'm not saying it isn't possible; I just doubt it's the case since that basically means you have your computer tethered to a cell phone. If that is the case, let me know.
If you're getting the same speed whether you're using wifi or ethernet, it's because your download speeds are bottlenecked at/throttled by your ISP, not your in-home hardware.

  • My internet download speeds very slow

Dear Sir or Madam:I changed my cable service plan on 3/6/2015. Internet download speeds should be 25Mbp/s.   Unfortunately, Comcast never support this kind of download speeds rate to my service requested rate. I checked the download speeds rate ever day, without 3/6/2015—3/9/2015, the download speeds rate reached 5Mbp/s, otherwise, until now, there are no any one day , the download speeds rate up to 2mbp/s,   sometime even download speeds is zero 0 bp/s ; most time download speeds only around 100Kbp/s. or under 100kbps.I bought new Gateway model Motorola SBG6580 that is working perfectly. I checked cable connection is good.I paid for 25mbps download speeds rate. Comcast given me only at 100kbps download speeds rate. This is too much overly fault service, I can’t accepted.I hope Comcast fix the problem immediately.  Thank you.

    I am getting 1.2MB currently.
    Sometimes I get lot more.
    I understand technically why you
    think Apple resolution would put
    more demands on bandwidth.
    1080P for my TV.
As I said this worked for other
    apple movie rentals in past.
I have been using same Dsl
    service for many years.
I know you are going to say that
    my bandwidth is too slow.
    Which Dsl customer gets 6MB?
How much do they pay each month
to get that kind of bandwidth.
I pay $80/mo and get 5 IPs which
    I need.

  • Download speeds very slow

I've seen many other threads on slow download speeds, however most of those were last summer/fall after people upgraded to Lion.  I bought a new iMac with Lion preinstalled (last summer) and have not had issues with download speeds until that last month or two.  I believe the issue started with the Feb 1, 2012 system upgrade to 10.7.3.  The iMac started to intermittently drop the wifi network.  At this point the download speeds were also significantly slower.  There was a patch that more or less fixed the dropping issue, however the download speeds are still awful.  It still occasionally drops the wifi network, but not as often as before.
I've tried a few things to troubleshoot.
    1) I have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard and I'm able to download a 2GB file in about 25 minutes wirelessly.  On the iMac it estimates over 2 hours but takes longer.
    2) I checked the firmware on my Qwest Actiontec modem, and it's up to date.
    3) when I plug my iMac directly into the modem with an ethernet cable it's able to download the 2GB file in about 25 minutes.
Thoughts on how to resolve this?
    Thanks!
