Normal Noise Levels for 15" i5

Hello,
What is the normal level of noise from fans and the hard drive in a 2.4GHz i5 15" MacBook Pro when idle (i.e. no CPU usage)? Mine makes a soft, quiet "swoosh" or hum, which sounds like the fans, although seems to originate from the right of the trackpad, which I believe is where the hard drive is located. It is very low volume. I can't hear it at all in the office, but at home in a silent room I can hear the soft, quiet "woosh". It is by no means an ugly or annoying noise, I just want to make sure mine isn't doing something that others people's are not.
Thanks,
James

same here! had a 2007 macbook pro and a 2009 unibody mbp before and the new i5 mbp is considerably louder than the other ones. its a permanent noise, similar to fan noise coming from the right corner, most likely from the hd. i called apple support today and they said the new ones shouldn't actually be louder than their predecessors. they suggested comparing it with an equal computer to see if there is any difference and if so, to have it replaced. so i'm also curious if this is normal or if i got a lemon.

  • Normal noise level of first generation XServes

    I just purchased a used first-generation XServe.
I turn it on, and the noise level is horrendous. It is as loud as when my old G5 PowerMac "crashed" and all 8 fans would run at full speed.
    Is this normal?
    Thanks for your answers!

Sound levels are relative - what may be noisy to you may not be too bad for someone else.
Remember, the XServe is designed/expected to be racked in a server room, with all kinds of other servers, air conditioning systems, etc. - datacenters are inherently noisy places and the XServe isn't out of line with other server platforms.
Part of the issue is the small size - at 1U there's only room for small 1.5" fans, which have to spin faster to move the same volume of air as the larger 6" behemoths in the PowerMacs, so they will be noisy.
The best way to tell if your noise level is within the expected range is to check Server Monitor which will tell you the fan spin speed - 4,000 RPM is typical for a properly-conditioned environment. If your fans are spinning significantly faster than that (up to 12K - 14K RPM) then there's a problem, either with the temperature settings that make the system think it's hotter than it is, or with the environment (it really is too hot).
Just one further thought - you say 'first generation'... do you mean the XServe G4? the G4 was significantly noisier than later revisions such as the G5 and the Intel-based XServes, although none of them would be considered 'quiet'.

  • Excessive Noise Levels

Hi, i'm getting a High Noise Level issue with a Linksys WRT54GL and with a high gain antenna LIN HGA7T. The problem is that at the WRT54GL location there're some neighbour antennas that at certain times off the day seems to be transmiting signals that increase the Noise Level seen by the wireless cards. So from the pc connected via wireless we're having ping responses to the AP for about 700 - 900 ms and sometimes (almost one time a day) it drops the pc from the wireless and it`s really hard to get connected again. When the signal stops, we recover normal noise levels and the ping response is at 1ms without any troubles. We're using WUSB54Gc cards. The question is, if i add another AP could i override the noise level? This would increase the signal strength in order to avoid the disconnection and the bad response times? Which AP should i use to this purpose? Is there any othe solution? Thanks a lot for your help.

Your best solution to this problem will probably be to simply change your router's channel  (see more channel info below).  However, I have included my full set of wireless connection tips:
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Noise level of the SRW2008MP?

    Hello!
Anyone has any information on the noise level produced by the SRW2008MP?
Furthermore is this switch quieter when idle or rather the noise level will always be
the same no matter the temperature of the internal components?
    Many thanks!

    Luca,
The acoustic noise level for this SKU is 42.4 dB. This product does not have automatic fan speed adjustment.

  • S10 noise level too high when closed

    HI,
I just unpacked a new S10 6423 47G. I was startled by the noise level from the start and now that after completion of the windows setup the noise level has not gone down(I has hoping for a fan control issue), I have stopped further installation and am wondering what to do next.
The three fans seem ok and fairly quiet, I think the installation of the hard drive is also nicely solved.
When the unit is open the noise level is nothing great but ok. As soon as I put the side panel on, I have an increase in noise level that brings me over the tolerance treshold.
I am not sure about the reason, the panel is quite loose but when I press on certain or all parts there is no change in sound. It seems there is resonance in the entire case when I install the side panel. It starts even when the panel is not completey vertfical. In addition to the general noise level there also seems to be resonance of other frequencies as from time to time there is a humming with a frequency of a few changes a minute.
I am really disappointed, the "quiet like whipser noise level" (or so the ad went) was the thing that made me buy this computer without thinking much either about specs or price, I just wanted a reasonably quiet computer.
    Any advice?
    ThanksM.

    Dear Brian,
thanks a lot for your info. I am relieved to see that the noise level is acceptable with your machine. That gives me hope.
FYI, I contacted Lenovo Germany and they were polite but not too helpful, they said that naturally this computer should be louder than a normal pc and did not want to hear much about the way the system is advertised as ultra-quiet. I do not believe in advertising promises but a moderately decent noise level i do expect.
I will return this unit to the dealer and order a new one - hoping that this is only a singular experience.
For me  it is not an option to be unhappy with Lenovo - I like the Think series a lot and buy their notebooks all the time for business..

  • Is this Noise Level ok?

Hello just wondering if one of you good people could take a look at these stats and just confirm for me that they are ok?
Have recently had a BT engineer call and rectify a problem with my broadband which i am now really happy with the results
my initial connection was 7915 which after a couple of days went down to 6190  after a couple of days which is still an improvement over my original connection of around 4000 prior to his visit.I have not manually reset the router which btw is a netgear dg834g v4 as didn't want to create any problems by resetting.it's the noise margin downstream  which seems high to me hence the post to verify .here are the stats: thank you.FAQ

  • Noise Levels

I just got a new MacBook, and everything is just peachy so far. I was curious on what would be "normal" for noise level. My computer is quiet enough to study at the library, but there is this really soft high pitch whine. It's not loud at all, but of course the high pitch whine is a little bothersome. The whine goes away if I hold a mouse button down, whether it be the one on the computer or a wireless mouse. I found that kind of weird. Is there an obvious solution? Or should I drag myself down to the repair center?
MacBook (Black)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The whine is referred to as "CPU whine". It was/is a common topic of discussion for the MacBook Pros. Here is one thread:

I believe Apple is replacing logic boards for some MacBook Pros:

  • Logical level for logical fact table sources

it is clear that for fact aggregates, we should use the Content tab of the Logical Table Source dialog to assign the correct logical level to each dimension.
question is : is it mandatory to assign even for non-aggregates fact tables the logical level for each dimension (which normally should be set to the most detailed level of each dimension) ? is it any known issue if "logical levels"in content tab are not set ?
the reason I'm asking this is a strange bug I have (I'm not going to discuss it here) and then only workaround seems to be NOT setting the logical levels (on content tab) for logical fact table sources.
    thank you !

If levels are not set: By default levels are considered as lowest level
It should not matter if you set or not
Generally we set for facts explicitly when we are using Aggregate tables.
Your current issue might be a case by case; I would suggest to check implicit fact, any table mapped to the source to force a join etc

  • ERM -- unable to determine matching org. level for BRGRU in the system

    Hello,
    I have a problem.
When I trY to import in the ERM (SAP GRC AC 5.3 SP5) a mass import of roles (derived roles) using the template Organizational Template.
Some of the roles gives me this error:
"Role not imported; unable to determine matching org. level for BRGRU in the system".
In the file I put for example
    ZAPVAPINTE     BUKRS     0083
Am I doing it right? or do I have to put $BURKS?
    Best regards.
    Pablo Mortera.

I have found that when you run the background job "syncronization of the organizational values" it pulls the org value name and all "values" assigned to it.  If you don't have values specified (on the table level) for the org name, you get this error.  We have many fields that we use values for these fields but they aren't specified in the table.
For example:  We have the org value "PLVAR" with the values "AL", "01", "02", "03", and "GB" assigned to it.  You can actually see these values in the backend system using SE11.  We do not get this error on this org value.  However, we have another org value "SACHZ" that we use, but we do not have any values assigned to it on the table level, so it is giving us this error.  We are trying to find out how to populate the "values" field since this was not done through configuration.
Here are the steps:  (1) Go to SE11 in your backend system.  (2)  Put your org value (example:  PLVAR) in the "DATA TYPE" field and click display. (3) Double click on the Domain name.  (4)  Go to the Value Range Tab and click on the "Value Table" name if there is one.  This is the table that has the org values assigned in it - normally done through configuration. (5) go to Utilities --> table contents --> display.  (6) execute the table contents.  These are the values that the sync job pulls over.  If there are no values there or if there is no "values table" name, you get the error.  If there are values there, you don't get it.
We are working with our technical team to get the values in these fields to see if that works.  Another quick way to see if there are values assigned to the org field is to use "Org Value Mapping" in ERM.  Select the "derived org level field" you want to see and click on the "org value from" magnifying glass.  If no values are there, a "values table" hasn't been populated in SE11.
It doesn't make much sense to me though because we can still use values for these fields for our derived roles....we just don't populate the table with them.
I'll update this message if we find a solution.
    Thanks,
    Peggy

  • Assign patch levels for component versions of system: Maintenance Optimizer

    Hello,
I am trying to have Maintenance Optimizer check for what files I need to download.  However, I get the following error:
Assign patch levels for component versions of system SXM.
I susepect that the problem really lies in the fact that the "SP Levels" in the "Software Components" tab is not populated in SMSY.
Does something read that information from the child system and populate the data automatically?  This is a new system install, and perhaps a step was missed in solman.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
MOPZ directs you to SAP Software Download Center in order to show you the lastest status and available packages.
If you are not seeing the packages perhaps you created you satellite system at solution manager pointing to the wrong product/version.
MOPZ is created to point you to the available Support Package Stacks for its products.
Normally one creates a system in solution manager defining it as an ECC server ( this does not have a download page for MOPZ ) when the correct assignment would be SAP ERP ( this last has a download page for MOPZ ).
If this is your case, you´ll need to redefine the satellite system again in our solution manager.
    hope this helps.

  • Why does NI-9233 with IEPE microphone report 39dBA as minimum noise level?

    Hi,
I have been using an ACO Pacific 1/2" IEPE microphone and preamp (7052SYS) with cDAQ and a 9233 IEPE module. The ACO mic is very similar to the G.R.A.S. 46AE (50mV/Pa) but with a 20mV/Pa sensitivity. Using this set-up in a hemi-anechoic chamber, the SPL is reported as about 39dBA (using the Sound and Vibration standard  'sound meter' VI). Yet, the third party lab's signal analyzer reports the room at about 25dBA. I have partially verified the NI set-up with a 114dB 1kHz calibrator. The NI set-up indicates about 114.3dBA. So we are on the money there.
Is there a noise floor on the 9233 that I am dealing with? Any thoughts? Recently, my company has built its own hemi-anechoic chamber and we like the NI tools. We had hoped to use the newer 9234 with a cDAQ chassis since the 51.2kS/sec is sufficient for our measurement range of 20-20kHz. We already use cDAQ extensively here.
    Thanks,
    -JD
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From the 9233 specs:
    Integrating Noise density:
    A-Weighted Power = ( A weighting power factor for bandwidth ) * (Bandwidth) * ( Noise Level )^2
    A-Weighted Power = ( 0.53 ) * ( 20000 - 20 Hz ) * ( 400 nV / sqrt(Hz) / 20 mV / Pa )^2
    A-Weighted Power = 4.26u Pa^2 rms
    Leq (A-Weighted) = 2.06m Pa rms = 40.2 dB(A) ref 20u Pa
Calculating from Noise at full scale range:
FS = Voltage Range / Sensitivity
    FS = ( 5 / sqrt(2) ) V rms / ( 20 mV / Pa ) = 176.8 Pa rms = 138.9 dB ref 20u Pa
    Noise = 138.9 dB ref 20u Pa - 95 dB FS - 2.73 dB(A) = 41.2 dB(A) ref 20u Pa
So the fact that you are reading 39 dB(A) indicates that your 9233 noise is meeting specifications. There is still an issue that some effort needs to be made to better match the signal range to the input range of the 9233. You can add some external signal conditioning to apply pregain (20 dB) to the microphone output before the 9233. You also have other DSA hardware options that include input gain.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT Noise levels

    Hi,
I'm considering a Mac Pro + 4GB RAM + ATI X1900 XT to run Apeture, based on the experiences & recommendations in this forum.
Can anyone comment on the noise level of the ATI X1900 XT compared with, say, the standard GeForce 7300 GT? I use my current Mac to run iTunes, as well as some other sound based apps that would suffer if the graphics card noise level was like a jumbo jet on final approach.
Does anyone have experiences here they can share?
I read in the forum that there is a possibility of a ATI Radeon X1950 XTX for Mac Pro that is quieter ... any truth in that?
    Much appreciated.

I have a MacPro 2.66 with the X1900 which was preinstalled in the system. The card is quite noisy but it is at an acceptable level. The reason you hear it is that the MacPro itself is very silent. Two components are competing which can make more noise: the harddisk (standard model with 250 GB) and the X1900. :-))
The sound from the X1900 is a constant fan noise which you are able to ignore while you work with this awesome machine. The performance of Aperture is simply great with this card even if I just installed 1GB of RAM!
Let me say it this way: If you want great performance for Aperture you should arrange with the fan noise of the X1900. Im convinced that we will see much more silent cards in the future which will give us the same performance. Then the time for a nice christmas present will have come! :-))

  • Which means when the iphone is working and doing normal noises but the screen shows nothing?

my phone is making normal noises, such as vibrate to connect with the charger, the noise of Blocking and unlock, but the screen is all black

    Hi https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6267396,
If you are having an issue with your iPhone giving you a black screen, I would suggest that you follow the steps in this article -
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Specifically -
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L
