Normal range for the Airport express in iMac

I have a pretty new iMac and since I installed I thought it has a low sensitivity. At the beginning I thought it was because the wireless router was too far, but yesterday I make a test and I put the router in front of the iMac, 3 meters of distance, direct vision without obstacles, and the wifi signal received by the iMac was 55% mesured with AirRadar. I think this is very low
Do you think there is any kind of problem with the Airport card? I read that in some versions of iMac there was a problem with the conexion between the antena and the card but I don't know if this happen in the latest versions of iMac

airranz, Welcome to the discussion area!
The wireless range should be much greater than that. It could be a fault of the iMac, it could be a fault of the wireless router, or it could be that wireless interference is destroying the wireless signal and drastically shortening the range.

What is the range (physical distance) for an Airport Extreme?

The range of the AirPort Express is about 150 feet or 50 meters. But, this measurement is taken in free air, with no obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path, and no other networks in operation that might interfere with the wireless signal.
In the real world, in a real home, once the signal passes through 3-4 walls, it is about gone. A ceiling will absorb more of the signal than a wall, because it is thicker. So, as much as possible, you want wireless devices to have line-of-sight with the wireless router for best performance.
Bottom line....it is not possible to predict wireless performance in advance of any installation since there are so many variables involved.

  • Where can I purchase a replacement CD for the Airport Express Base station A1264?

Where can I purchase a replacement CD for the Airport Express Base station A1264?
I'd like to sell my Airport Base Station, but I believe I need a CD with the software on it for the new owner. Anyone know where I can find one?
    Thanks!

I doubt it is available.. and since a new Mac doesn't even have an optical drive.. there is no need whatsoever today for the cd.. it is all available in the OS or download. In fact the stuff on the cd will now be totally out of date.

  • Range of the Airport Express

I am using my Airport Express in an upstairs office.  I can access the internet in a den downstairs at the other end of the house with a second MacBook Pro - BUT I cannot access the internet with my IPad.  What is the range of the Airport Express?

What is the range of the Airport Express?
Apple's specifications of 150 feet don't really mean much since this measurement taken in free air with no other wireless networks around, and no obstructions like walls or ceilings in the signal path.
As you might imagine, it is not possible to predict wireless coverage in a home due to all the unknowns.....how many walls, ceilings, etc. must the signal try to pass through? What is the construction of the walls and ceilings? Are there other wireless networks or camera/security systems in the area?  Cordless phones?
The bottom line here is that the iPad should pickup the signal about as well as your MacBook Pro, so if you've already tried powering down the Express and then restarting it to reset the device and the wireless signal....and the iPad still won't connect...you might want to take it to the Apple store to let them have a  look.

  • What is the range of the airport Express

I want to get an apple airport express to use for all my apple I products but I would like to know the range of the express so I know where the best place in my house would be

The best location would be close to the wireless devices that will be connecting to the AirPort Express.
Line-of-sight between the AirPort Express and a connecting device would be ideal.
You will lose 15-20% of the wireless signal...on average...for each (sheetrock) wall that the signal must pass through. So after 3-4 walls, or a ceiling and a wall or two, there won't be much of the signal left...and performance will be poor to non-existent at that point.

  • HT1998 When will Apple release an new firmware update (7.6.5 or higher) for the Airport Express/Extreme?

I am sure most of you know how terrible the 7.6.3 firmware for the airpot express/extreme is.  I was on the phone with Apple technical support and they had admitted there are issues with this lastest firmware and confirmed they are working on it.  I know how well Apple fixes their issues however it has been over 6 months and nothing.  Because of all these issues, I have had to roll back all my airport equipment to 7.6.1 mainly to use the Airplay feature. Is there any projection for a new update or is Apple just ignoring this issue!?

What problem are you having exactly? I have updated  to 7.6.3 and AirPlay works just fine in fact better especially with iTunes. All my wireless devices show up  as soon as they are turned on or  in range.
Not trying to predict anything here, but if the firmware update  IS defective software, Apple probably would've fixed it by now.

  • Do I need to buy any extra cables for the airport express??

I was wondering if i need to buy any extra cables for the airport exprees.what kind of cables do i have to get to connect the airport express to my DSL modem?

Typically all you would need is an Ethernet cable (cat5, rj45 end), and it would be connected to the LAN port on the DSL modem, and the Ethernet jack on the AP Express.

  • Whats the typical range of the airport express? Can I use a single unit for a 3,000sq ft house.

My iPad 2 has serious back light bleeding. What should I do? I think its getting worse too.

To address your subject question: the range of the express could extend over a 3,000 sq ft house if the conditions, placement, etc. are ideal.  Plaing the Express in the center, or close to the center, of the house would give the broadest coverage area.  But, things like construction material, wiring, other appliances will all have an impact on the signal strength around the house.  You would probably be better served using an Extreme since it has significantly more radiated power (23 dBm vs 15 dBm for the Express) and will be able to tolerate the signal attenuation better.
If tow Expresses, then spacing them so each covers about half of the house would be a decent approach.  But again, the construction of the house, and interfering equipment have to be considered.

  • What is the range of the airport express and extreme?

I'm thinking of my next network upgrade and possibly moving even more into the depths of apple and using one of the airport or even the time-capsule networking devices.  What kind of range am I look at with these devices?  Of all the specs. and such listed, I don't really see that mentioned and its a bit of a concern of mine (my current network doesn't give me good connectivity on the back side of the house).  I do understand that a lot of my troubles are from the location of my setup, but with that setup I also know the general blanked coverage is x ft in diameter approx.  So what is it for these devices?

Range is almost impossible to predict for any wireless device. It is a function of a number environmental variables, most of which concern the type and construction of the building in which it is used, and the presence or absence of competing wireless networks and other sources of interference.
I can tell you that in free and unobstructed space, the range of an AirPort Extreme or Express is hundreds of feet because I've measured it. A single Extreme blankets my home and most of the area around it, even with its transmitter power set to minimum (10%). You will not be able to get that range in a Manhattan townhouse though.
All Apple products are now capable of using the 5 GHz band. Using it exclusively will mitigate the effects of wireless interference, at the expense of not tolerating intervening obstructions as well as 2.4 GHz.

  • What are the ideal/optimum settings for the Airport Express for WiFi... ?

I currently have my MacPro plus my MacBook Pro running from my Airport Express and they work perfectly... but my new iPhone 4 won't see the network... does anyone know why this could be and is it something to do with security or other setting I have on my Airport Express.... I have been onto iPhone 4 support and they are all about restore and resets... it's gotta be something small I'm doing wrong.
Any suggestions or advice most welcome.

    Hi Bob and Sijnon...
Cheers for your replies and comments... I don't really know hat a closed network is... I do have it password protected and I'm using the WPA2 Personal security protocol... the one thing I can say is that it is broadcasting in the 5GHz band as I had it set to the 2.4GHz and I couldn't pick up the signal in my kitchen so I switched recently to the 5GHz band and my MacPro now works fine all over the house. I was told by a colleague that the iPhone 4 supported the 5GHz band..?
Is this the problem... is this reason why it won't join the network..?

  • HT2497 Do I need to download a software for the airport express on my computer before it will work?

Having trouble getting conneced to my airport express.  Supposedly they set it up at the Apple store and said all's i needed to do would be plug it in when I got home. Not so it doesn't work!

    Hello:
From your profile, you have an iPad.  There is an app you would need to download to the iPad to set the AE up from there.  From an iMac, the software is already included.

  • I did set up my Airport Express to extend my existing network. It did ok but I can't see the name assigned to the Airport Express name in my available networks. Is that normal?

I did set up my Airport Express to extend my existing network. It did ok but I can't see the name assigned to the Airport Express name in my available networks. Is that normal?

If the AirPort Express is extending your network it is using the same wireless network name as your "main" router.
Your main router and the Express act like one "big" network now.
Your computer will connect to either the main router or the Express automatically....depending on where it sees the best signal.

  • I have a Time Capsule as my main WiFi router in my home.  I'd like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house located approx 100 feet away. Will the AirPort Express fill this need?  Is the AirPort Extreme a better fit?

I am using a Time Capsule in conjunction with my IMAC 27" system as my main WiFi router in my home.  I would like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house which is located about 100 feet away.  Can I use the Airport Express to provide this extended range?  Would I be better served to use the Airport Extreme?  Thanks!

The normal location for an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme is a point that is about half way between the main router....the Time Capsule in this case.....and the area that needs more wireless coverage.....the guest house.
I doubt that you will be able to locate an AirPort at this "half way" point, correct?
Before you buy anything, take a laptop, iPhone, iPad, etc out to the guest house as a test to see if you can log on and get a reliable Internet connection over the wireless.
If you can, then either an AirPort Express or AirPort Exreme could  be used to provide additional wireless signal coverage in the guest house.
If you cannot get a reliable connection with the "test" mentionded above, neither AirPort will help since they can only "extend" the quality of signal that they receive.
If this is the case, you will need to look at running an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule out to the guest house to provide the reliable connection that you will need.

  • New Airport Express/Old iMac

This is my first time trying to set up a wireless network. I have installed the original Airport Card in my iMac and I just upgraded to Tiger (10.4.3). When I try to use the Airport Assistant to connect to my new Airport Express, I get the "There was an error joining the AirPort network 'xxxxx'" message. At this point I am only trying to use Airport for printing (will be getting DSL in a couple of weeks). The Airport Express is flasing amber. I have reset it several times with no success. I have also tried to download 6.1.1 Firmware, but it will not install because I'm not connected to the Airport. Help please.

Are you in range of the Airport Express? First off make sure you are sitting next to the AE.
I have this setup you are talking about, AE with the printer attached and no other connections. This configuration in my house has no blinking light just the solid green. This configuration work well I have two ibook laptops one older and one new that access the printer via the AE and it works great.
