Normalizing sound output

Hello all,
I searched and could not find this topic although I know the issue must be out there.
I use my Mac for everything, work, watching TV/movies/video, and listening to music.
I upgraded from a Dell 30" to a 47" monitor, once I attached the new monitor I noticed that the sound didn't seem to be normalized like it was before, this was only really noticeable in video/TV (not saying its fine in music, just notice it in video/TV) . Quiet parts during a movie/show are VERY quiet, you need to turn it up to hear, and loud passages shake the room, I end up turning it WAY down so as not to freak out my neighbors, I end up watching a movie/TV show with the remote in my hand at all times.
I have the regular "line out" going directly to the internal speakers of the monitor (which I use much of the time), and the optical out going to a set of Logitech Z5500s. The issue is with both/either.Its evident much more when using the Logitechs...once an action scene happens and that sub kicks in I can almost see the looks on my neighbors faces!
I have the Perian codecs installed and have it to play soft sounds "loudly" thinking it will "normalize" the sound and have soft passages in a show/movie play in volume more consistent with loud passages, but it doesn't seem to be making much difference.
As I said this is with both/either sound sources so I believe its with the computer itself where the change needs to take place.
Is there a utility/app out there that will address this problem? Is there something that I'm missing, a command line deal?
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Hi Jeff Hoogmoed;
Thanks for your explanation. Dynamic range compression I have heard of but I have never heard it referred to as normalization.
Since I tend to listen to primarily classical music where the huge dynamic range is the heart of the music, I would never even consider using something like that so I can't be much of help with your question. Sorry.

  • Upgrade to 10.9.4 Sound Output Gone

I upgraded to 10.9.4 today.  After doing so the internal speakers output option is not available in the Sound control panel.  My only selections are the Soundflower output choices from my previous install of Soundflower.
Can anyone advise how I could restore normal sound output to the speakers?  Thanks

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    3. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    4. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    5. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    6. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    7. Reset the NVRAM.
    8. Reset the SMC.
    9. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    10. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • Apogee miniDAC and Sound output

There is no sound output from the Apogee miniDAc after the MacPro (2013) awakens from sleep. Sound output does occur if the internal Mac Pro speakers are selected. A restart will allow the Apogee miniDAC to function normally. In searching the threads regarding similar topics, it appeared that this occured with fusion drives. However others have reported  similar problems with SSD.
Is this a Mavericks issue? My Apogee miniDAC is connected to the computer via USB.
I would like to maintain the miniDAC since it does provide the interface to my preamp and speakers.
    Thank you.

This seems to be a bug with digital audio output via USB. I am not sure if there is a fix or whether you're gonna have to wait for a Software Update to be released by Apple.
BTW: I've always wondered whether this kind of solution gives you better audio out that using the analogue out (i.e. headphone port on the Mac Pro).
Obviously Toslink would be another option but I understand that you are not willing to spend money on hardware to do the same thing differently...
EDIT: Does that thing not have a Toslink input? May be worth a try if you have a 'cable' lying around for that (you'd need a 3.5mm optical adapter for that port though).

  • Lower than expected sound output from A100

    Hi.
I have recently bought a Satellite A100 PSAA9E and have been pretty disappointed with the low sound output from it.
It's currently set to the highest volume level and is nowhere near the level I would expect.
Is this normal for this machine? All advice appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Well, its not easy to say what a low level is because its your own perception.
You know that the notebook speakers are not very powerful speakers because of the size and you can not compare it with other speakers.
But nevertheless; did you check also the settings in the control panel -- Sound and Audio devices?
There you can set the different sound controls to max. Maybe then you will notice a difference.

  • Weird sound output issue

    Hi everyone,
my main problem this time is that I hear no sound coming from the internal speaker of my G4 MDD 1.25 dual.
I have read some othe topics and I have trash the prefs and did the trick with the mini jack.
I have also install 10.4.11 over my old 10.4.11 using a combo update.
    No results at all.
In sound prefs "choose a device for sound output" I see only Headphones.
If I plug a mini jack on headphones then I see the Line Out option!
If I plug in headphones they work normally, except I see the Line out option and I can hear sound including the startup chime.
    Thank you!!

  • Noise on sound output

I'm just trying out an external drive on my Macbook Pro. I happened to have the internal sound output from the Mac connected at the time and noticed that as soon as I connected the drive to the mains, the output became very noisy: as continuous series of clicks at about 15 Hz. I thought it was the drive, but I think it's some sort of grounding issue as connecting my FW interface led to noise on the internal MAc outputs too (a different type of noise!). It seems to happen with either FW400 or 800.
I have no intention of using the output for anything serious - I was just listening to some CDs whilst wiring up - but is this normal?
    Best
    Gorwel

I'm also experiencing this issue. I have some external speakers (razer mako) connected to the headphone jack on my 15" Unibody MBP (purchased last month). I get some intermittent line noise. Additional hissing and clicking which seems to correspond to activity on the computer (e.g. external drive connectivity).
There is no line noise connecting to my iPhone or other audio source.

  • NO SOUND output (except for start-up chime) on MacBook Pro

I've been looking all over the discussion boards but haven't been able to figure this one out.
Suddenly for no apparent reason I have no sound output. I've checked all the settings, repaired disk permissions, restarted, etc. with no effect. I DO get the start-up chime but then nothing. Also, I do NOT have a red light emitting from my adio out jack. F3, F4 and F5 show the volume icon changing on-screen but with no actual sound output. Switching to a speakers or earphones doesn't change it either.
The only thing I can think of is that my battery has been slowly dying and has just recently started to crap out when the battery life indicator shows more than 50% charge. For this reason the computer has lost power and suddenly shut down once or twice without having been properly shut down. But the loss of sound input did NOT happen directly after this.
    Any suggestions?

    I Finally figured it out...
For some reason, my audio setting got changed in my audio prefs:
    System settings --> Audio
On the "Sound Effects" tab, it was set to "Internal Speakers", which explains why I was getting the startup chime, and alert sounds just fine.
However on the "Output" tab, it somehow got changed to "Sunflower" which causes the sound not to work. As soon as I changed it to "Internal Speakers" everything went back to normal.
    Hope that helps!

  • Sound Output on MacBook - Not loud enugh

I've been using a MacBook for quite a while now and I've noticed that the sound output for programs such as Front Row is not loud enough to be able to use it from 10 feet away which is what the interface is about.
iTunes volume levels are higher but not that high, all levels in System Preferences are set to maximum.
Any suggestions or software to fix this issue???

    Hello,
Most notebook sound devices usually produce hallow sounds and are normally harder to hear at higher distances. Your best bet, rather than to push the limits of the speakers, ( they aren't great ) is to hook your laptop into some external speakers made for this type of operation. I usually hook my Macbook up to the TV along with my home theater system when I am using Front Row. I highly suggest you do the same.

  • Multiple sound output streams?

Hi list. I've got a question about sound output. Specifically, when I do voicechat with things like iChat or Ventrilio, I want that to use my USB headphones for its audio output, even though I'm also listening to iTunes on my normal analog output.
Is it possible to use multiple output streams like this? And if not, why not?

Okay, never mind. I found it as a per-application preference. Silly me.

  • No Sound Output options - and no sound - when in Native OS 9

    Hi,
on my MDD G4 (the last one, single 1.25GHz G4), I have no sound output option in the Sound Control Panel, when started in native OS9. As a result I cannot increase the volume above 'mute' and hence have no sound at all. Extensions-off makes no difference.
In Mac OS X, all variants I've tried, I have perfectly normal sound. In Classic mode too, sound works (but I can't use the Sound CDEV obviously).
Is there a special driver (Sound Manager vXXX?) required for this machine or what? The Sound Manager which it does have, which is shown during startup, is not crossed out.
    Thanks for all suggestions!
    Cheers, A.

Yes, that was my suspicion actually, because I am quite sure that I am NOT using the correct OS. I bought the MDD second hand, and it didn't come with OS9 disks. I tried installing a retail OS 9.2 system, the installer told me No, not on this Mac. Even weirder, when I copied someone else's OS9 disk, which was allegedly from a MDD also, I was also told by the installer No, I don't work with this hardware. I guess that the disk I got was from an earlier MDD (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP63), not the 1.25GHz later one (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP106), though I don't know what actual hardware differences there are.
I eventually just copied the system folder from my Yikes 400 G4, updated it in Classic mode to 9.2.2, then restarted in native OS9 and wow, it worked. Except for the graphics card, drivers for which were a nightmare to track down. ATI has somehow removed all OS9 drivers from the entire internet (yeah, who'd have thought that that was possible!). Again, eventually I found someone who had hoarded the ATI Retail Driver Installer from October 2002 and he kindly let me copy it and then yay I had graphics acceleration. (Even the Finder was awful to use without it).
Chances of finding a machine-specific installer disk for THIS particular mac are very small I suspect.
    Cheers, A.

  • Sound output no longer happening

When I downloaded iTunes 7.5 to my G5, when I opened it to play my library, no sound came out. I rebooted. Still nothing. Then I decided to check the driver for the Firewire 410. It appeared fine with the input but no output was showing. I then went to M-Audio's site and downloaded the most recent driver. After installation, there still is no sound coming from my system.
    Do you have any ideas?

    Hello sb235
Open *System Preferences / Sound* and select the Output tab and test both a set of headphones and your speaker system. You should see the *Sound Output* automatically change from *Internal Speakers* to *External Headphones* when inserting a jack.
There are two things that normally go wrong:
    1. the micro switch in the iMac's output jack has failed and now it doesn't switch the sound to Headphone Output and needs to be serviced.
    2. perhaps you have mistakenly plugged the speaker system into the input jack instead of the output jack.

  • MBP Sound Output

    hi everyone,
i'm considering getting one of the current "core 2 duo" macbook pro computers, most likely the 2.33ghz 15" one. i use my computer mostly for pro audio work, recording and performing live.
currently i'm using a g4 titanium powerbook with a digigram pcmcia vxpocket as my soundcard for live and mobile work. i have a digidesign digi002 interface too, but this is much too large to travel with.
since the macbook pro doesn't have a pcmcia slot any longer, can someone recommend another very portable solution for my sound input/output?
the built-in sound output on my titanium g4 has always been terribly noisy. how are these combined optical digital/analogue outputs on the macbook pro's?
how have people's general experiences with these latest apple portables been?
thanks very much for any advice!
    alexandra

I use my 2.16 core2 for audio, as well. While I normally use a MOTU 896 for all audio functions, right now I'm listening to streaming radio...the audio out jack is doing the work, feeding a Mackie 1402 into a pair of TAPCO S5 powered monitors, and the sound is VERY good. I mean, surprisingly good.

  • IMac 21.5 sound output flaw

I have a small flaw with my 21.5 iMac's sound output. When I plug my Philips headphone into my iMac's build-in sound output hole, it takes about 2 seconds to transfer the sound from the build-in speakers to my headphone. Also, when I take my headphone out, it takes 2 seconds to come through the build-in speakers. When I did set up my iMac, I received static electricity by touching the bottom of it. This flaw does bother me. Did the static electricity caused it? Is this normal or a flaw? How can it fix it?

The delay isn't a flaw, it's the time it takes for the switch inside the jack socket to recognise something has been inserted, mute the internal iMac speakers and redirect the audio to the socket.

  • No Sound Output with Digital Output Mac

    Hi There,
I normally use my Blackmagic card for sound output on my Mac with Premiere CS6.  I want to work with the digital output on my current project but when I try switching to digital out under Preferences>Audio Hardware the audio still comes out of the Blackmagic card but not the digital audio out on the Mac.  I'm testing with the bars and tone in the browser and my timeline sequence.  FCP 7 works as expected when digital out is selected, and I know digital out is working properly on my computer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Gerry

OK, sorry it was that I had to switch audio device under plackback.
Perhaps this should be added to the FAQ under No Sound During Playback, which doesn't include the Preferences>Playback as part of the troubleshooting for MAC.
    Thanks!
