Northbridge cooler for Neo Plat (ver 1)

Freaking MSI has put Northbridge too close to AGP port. My Leadtek 5900U is too thick and I am very limited with the choice of active coolers for northbridge. I use vantec iceberg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-110-103&depa=0) but it bearly fits under the video card and the air flow is not the best there.
Does anyone have other solutions?

Also, when I took Vantec off to send my mobo RMA, I found out that the vantec would only (seemly) touch the sides of the chip like an issue here:

I am thinking of using a thermal tape now.

  • After market chipset cooler for NEO (PLAT)

o as im typing this im runing 44c CPU and 45c chipset dose any ond else have this prob one this borad and i dont what to wast money if the chipset cooler dont clear my 9800 card and HSF and ive got a Artec cooling After market cooler so it is realy close to the chipset cooler... so has anyone put an after market HSF on there chipset

I just posted this in the other Northbridge fan thread but I'll post it again:
Well I just recently built a new pc with an MSI K8N Neo Platinum and have been browsing these forums for awhile... I've also been looking into actively cooling the NB because from previous experience with my Xbox, Nvidia NB's run fairly hot... I was thinking about getting one of those Vantec coolers but I dont really like the hole thing where the fan is built into the heatsink (personally I don't think it is very efficient)... So I was trying to find some other ways to cool the chip and found that any 40mm fan will fit on the heatsink, but the stock gold heatsink was too tall and if I put a fan on it would interfere with my Radeon 9800Pro with an Arctic Silencer cooler... So I came across this:
    http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=291975&pfp=srch1
The heatsink is shorter plus it comes with a 40mm fan so I think it would fit perfectly on the NB (I have one of these chipset coolers in my Xbox and am very pleased with it)... I think that combined with some Arctic Silver 5 will definately perform a lot better than the stock gold POS... I will be picking one of these up shortly at CompUSA and will let all you guys know how it goes along with some pictures... Hope this helps...
Here are some pics of the kit and of it placed on the NB in my Xbox:
As you can see the heatsink that comes with it is indeed a little shorter and should help those of you with larger video cards that have problems fitting an NB cooler... I also have an arctic silencer on my vid card and I'm almost 100% sure this would fit as I was able to fit my finger inbetween the card and the NB heatsink and the fan is about the same width as my finger...

  • Just bought SATA2 250GB WD HD for MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).

I just bought a SATA2 250GB Western Digital HD for my MSI Neo Plat ver 1 (7030).
I'm currenlty using the 1.7 BIOS.
I've always used IDE up to this point.
I haven't yet installed my new drive but I'm a little nervous.
Are there any gotchas waiting for me?
What I want to do is copy my partitions from my old IDE HD to my new SATA2 HD.
Something tells me that this is not going to go so smoothly - don't ask me why, it's gut feeling
I predict BSOD when I try to boot from my new HD.
Any advice from people who have done this using the MSI Neo Platinum 1 ?
Can you have both IDE and SATA drives connected at the same time so that I can do a partition copy?
I think that MSI Neo Plat 1 is only rated do SATA1 so I'm not sure how it'll behave with my SATA2 drive
I'm a pessimist by nature, however, my "gut" instints are normally correct

I don´t have the same MoBo as you, so there might be some differences which I´m not aware of, but basically you could install the Sata drive as new bootdrive with OS and keep the old Pata HDD as backup drive.
The Sata installation (not raid) is just like a Pata installation except for other cables and MoBo connectors/IF.
To avoid confusion, disconnect the power from the old HDD and just keep the new Sata drive as the only drive while formatting / installation OS.
You will only benefit native Sata1 performance, but that almost the same as Sata2 so no big deal ( only the theoretically performance is twice as good ).
I don´t think there´s no need to change any backward Sata1-2 jumpers on the WD drive, but if I´m wrong there should be such a jumper that limits the performance to Sata1 - You could check at WD website.
After you´ve reconnected the old HDD - Go into bios ( probably "Advanced" menu ) and set " HDD Boot drive" order ( or called simular ), check and set WD as bootdrive.( don´t mix up HDD boot order with the general Floppy/CD/HDD bootorder).
Now you still have all your files intact on the old HDD and if you want to, you could ofcourse transfer them to the new drive as well.
( You will need to reinstall some programs on the new HDD, that does not work anylonger on the old HDD, but all files are intact)

  • MSI 875P Neo-LSR & Northbridge Cooler

    Hi
Hi have a MSI 875P Neo-LSR motherboard and the northbridge cooler is making alot of noise!
I've already cleaned the dust from the fan, added some oil but it stills makes an anoying noise
    My question is this:
I don't want to spend €€€ in a new cooler because i'm upgrading my system in a few months so, will my motherboard survive without the cooler? But remaining with the heatsink...
I have a Thermalright XP120 with an 120mm fan in my CPU, which are very close to the northbridge, they might fresh a little the NB... And i got a good airflow in my case...
    My MB:

    Thank you for your answers!
Do you know the maximum temperature that the NB can get? Or the normal one...
I want to test if it's not getting to hot without the fan

  • Xp-120 on msi neo plat (754) with arctic rev3 agp cooler

I want to put a thermalright xp-120 on my msi neo plat s754 board. looking at some pics, the heatpipes seem very close to the agp slot.
I have an arctic cooling rev3 cooler on my connect3d 9800pro, and I'm not sure if there is enough clearance between the heatpipe and the bracket on the side of the AGP card.
anyone else got this setup working ?

The results you posted there mean totally nothing since you don't state on what grounds you placed them on those places.

Cant load networking driver for neo 2 plat

    1. Put your Windows CD in the drive.
    2. Select Install Windows.
    3. Let install continue.
    4. After the first restart, you will see something about Recovery Console.  Do NOT select this option.  Just let setup continue.
    5. You will soon see a message "searching for existing Windows installation".
    6. Soon after, you will be given the option to REPAIR that installation or make a new installation.
    7. Select REPAIR.
    8. Just keep going.
That's it.  Hopefully things will be just fine after the repair is done.

  • Msi Neo Plat & A64 3000

    Hi guys
Well finally after a few months of waiting ive got rid of my stock A64 cooler and had chance to fiidle with some overclocking i really would like some advise on my recent overclcock perhaps some of you guys know where i might be able to tweak my system alittle bit here's the details
    System
    A64 3000+
    MSI Neo Plat
    2 X 512mb Crucial Ballistix PC4000
    Radeon x800 pro Vivo
    Hiper 450w PSU
    60gig seagate IDE HDD
    80gig seagate SATA HDD
    Cooling
    Thermalright SLK-978u
    Artic Cooling rev4
so far i have reached this
    FSB 235 x 10 @ 1.65v mem @ 2.5,3,3,10 @ 1.70v
    temps are around 39
    3DMark 2001 = 23766
    3DMark 2003 = Havent try'd yet :p
So are my mem timings good ive try'd higher FSB but couldn't seem to get it without upping my volts,  im thinking that it might be my memory settings holding me back but not really sure
    Cheers for reading

Second double sided dimm in the 7030's seem to really give it headaches.  WILL NOT run @ 1:1 no matter what I do.  Automatically defaults it to 166 divider no matter what slots or bios settings I try.  I managed to get them to run @ 200 by OC'ing to 240fsb but even then I had to use way worse timings than they would do by themselves.  OCZ is the only manufacturer I have found that makes a 1 Gig stick that runs at the same timings as their 512 Mb sticks.  When I get one of those babies I'll really be able to see what this thing will do @ 1:1.  Probaly only get to 220 or so with pc3200 but doing it @ 1:1 with good timings will be sweet!

  • Need help upgrading BIOS - K8N Neo Plat

    HELP!!!
I have bios 1.1 on my K8N Neo Plat.  I have been trying all morning to upgrade my bios to 1.3, but have been unsucessful so far.  Note that I do NOT have any fancy MSI programs installed (I don't like bloat).
Sooooo, I donloaded bios 1.3 from the MSI website.  This is a little zip file.  Then, I tried the following....
    1) Install from an XP boot floppy. -- Flashing the bios appeared to work, but upon reboot, ver 1.1 was still there.
    2) Install from Win98SE boot floppy. -- Same story.  Flash appeared to work, but 1.1 was still present.
For both type of boot floppies, the flash program says that it is currently re-programming the bios, and it exits normally, without any errors.  The filename that I was loading a file called "W7030NMS.130".
    3) Just for giggles, I downloaded bios ver 1.1, and use the "FC" command to be certain that they were different.
    4) I checked my BIOS screens for any hint of BIOS protection, but could not find any.
    5) The readme file that came with the ver 1.3 said to work from the hard drive, but boot floppies do not seem to like NTFS.  So I simply cannot do it this way unless I re-partition and re-format.
    Any ideas???

Try making a boot floppy with this.
Thats Dr DOS Disk For Bios Flashing from http://www.bootdisk.com
It's pure DOS, and will work with any OS.

  • MSI K8N NEO PLAT + CD / DVD-RW Drives

Hi, i have the msi k8n neo plat. I recently had to replace my old mobo due to the old power supply blowing or something. So i got me a 480watt enermax coolergiant psu. Replaced the mobo for a new msi k8n neo plat. Put the mobo in and psu. Working fine and dandy. Now i installed 64bit xp to primary, and ive had it running for for about 2 weeks. Went to install linux to the second hard drive, so i changed the boot order, saved settings and went to load disc...however now my cd and dvd drives dont work, and they dont work in windows either.

Can anybody tell me what i should set the cpu fsb frequency to in the bios.
I just read this in the faq
What is the fsb speed of this cpu?
Depending on which FSB you are asking about: The Athlon 64's have the memory controller built in (which was previously part of the Northbridge on the motherboard) which uses up to 200MHz DDR Memory (400MHz FSB) The HyperTransport link from the CPU to the rest of the motherboard runs up to 800MHz. Just to expand on my answer... The HT link is 800MHz, but it's 16 bit in size (2 bytes worth of data per clock) the total bandwidth of the HyperTransport link is 3.2GB in total - 1.6GB sending data to CPU and 1.6GB receiving data from CPU.

  • K8t neo 2 ver. 1

i have purchased an athlon 64 x2 4800+ to upgrade from an athlon 64 3000+. My bios version is 3.3 and live bios wont detect anything later than that. with the new cpu my pc wont even post so i switched back to the old cpu and works fine. i saw they have 9.4 bios for my board iread everything in the how to update bios in the download i tried doing it with the floppy like they say to at the A prompt i type the code and it says invalid drive and i cant get it to work. my system is as follows msi neo 2 ver. 1 ms-6702e, 2gig ram, bfg 7800gs.

See >> here << about MSI MB USB BIOS flashing tool, best way to do it. And no Live Update will not update to the newer BIOS for dual core with single core CPU installed, at least that's what happened when I tried with mine. You need to download the BIOS you need and then use the USB tool to update. Using USB tool is safest way to do it.

  • Msi k8n neo plat problems

I have built 2 computers exactly the same.
    msi k8n neo plat
    512 corsair xms ddr 3200
    8og sata maxtor
    amd 64 3200
    128mb ati 9800 pro
    asus cd drive
When i tried to install windows xp pro on both the machines i got the same error. could not copy file. On each try the file was a different one. After hours of trying new things i found that putting the memory in slot 2 on the motherboard  solved the problem, windows installed and booted up as norm. When i moved the memory back to slot 1 the computer would not boot.
I have now left the memory in slot 2 but the computer will still crash every hour.
I am sure this is something to do with the memory but not sure what the problem is.
    Can anyone help.

  • Arctic NV Silencer 5 + ZM-NB47J on Neo-Plat

I'm thinking about buying the arctic silencer 5, but I wonder does that silencer fit combined with a passive northbridge cooler on the chipset? it seems kinda big, and don't wanna buy something that turns out to be utterly useless

Dont think it will be a problem. I was just about to buy that one too but I had a check at my G card and found out that the heatsink wasnt realy fastened. fixed it and now my temp is 50,5oC (droped 7oC) @ idle. So that makes me satisfied for the moment my Gainward 6800GT GS runns @ 420/1200 totaly stable.

  • Northbridge cooler

    Hi,
I am thinking of replacing the northbridge cooler on my 875p-fis2r.
I am looking at this one:
    http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/minochcokit.html
but I was wondering if anybody had any exprience with that product on a MSI board.
    Cheers

I did replace the thermal pad with some artic silver. It does work fine, as long as you are very carefull not to put any on the miniature (what looks like) heatsinks. Else your system might become unstable (believe I know ). Now something I find interesting. You know how the NB temperature always shows around 54-56 C. Well I got the same phenomenom now with my processor temperature, eventhough the temperature coming directly from the P4 is correct (around 36 C). After installing 'Motherboard Monitor', and configuring sensor 1 to WinBond1, sensor 2 to winbond 2 and sensor 3 to winbond 3, the reading of the CPU temperature is always ~20 C off. If i run corecenter first, the temperature is correct, then if i launch 'motherboard monitor' i got that jump in the p4 temperature, and it stays as is until i reboot. So whatever 'MM' does to screw up the reading of the CPU, might be equivalent to what MSI does to read the NB temperature.
I am going to get a temperature probe this morning, as i want to check the temp on a couple of components. I will monitor the NB temp with it for a while.
