Northbridge fan 845E Max2

Hello all
I was wondering if it is safe to remove the fan on the northbridge of the 845E Max2 (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=311). I want to remove it, because it's to noisy and because I only use it as a server.

Yep. No problems there. I would replace the stock heatsink with a better one. I use an NB-1 from thermalright. But this is me. The stock heatsink will just fine for you.

whenever I plug in the power cable to the hard disk computer shuts down after 2-5 seconds. If I try to start it again nothing happens. So I need to plug off and on the ATX-connector again so that the power supply works and the CPU-fan spins. However, as long as a hard drive is attached (it does not even need to be connected to any of the IDE-controller; having connected to the power supply is sufficient) it shuts down.
Following tests were done:
1- other hard disks were used
2- other power supply resources were used
3- computer was started with short connecting the power switch through the respective pins
Still the same result. If no hard disk is plugged in, system starts fine.
So I flashed the bios to A6398ims.570 without connecting the hard disks (since no hard disk drives were available the win98 start diskette created a c drive in the physical memory - afaiu - and I flashed the bios via this generated c drive). But nothing is changed!
Does anyone have an idea?

after reading the PSU guide I used a HDD which was 20GB (an older one of app. 4 years) and system booted normally. It seems that the PSU of 300W was having a difficulty of serving the relative newer HDD with power. I will test it with a min. 400W PSU and let you know if the problem is completely solved.

Can anyone recommend me a Northbridge fan replacement?

I have a MSI K8N Neo4-F nForce4 and recently i have been experiencing random crashes and lock ups which i think are due to the northbridge fan failing (it was making horrible noises).
I tried to replace this with the Asaka heatsink/fan combination thing but it didn't fit under the graphics card as there is only about 1.5cm vertical space available. Can anyone recommend a replacement suitable for this motherboard? Preferably a cheap one. =)
Also -i don't know much about chipset- is it safe to run the computer without a northbridge fan installed assuming i don't do anything intensive like games or whatever?

Now add some graphite powder in the same place where you put the oil, add as much or a bit more of the graphite powder than the oil. This is important if the fan is going to "sit up" as opposed to lying flat.
Now put the fan back where you want it and when it starts spinning it may be noisy for a few seconds until the graphite\oil works its way in. Then it will stop and it will stay stopped for many years and you may very well not need to buy a new fan after all!
I experimented a lot with this and this is the very best way to quiet all those fans and have them work well. I have always been a big fan of those removable ide hard drive trays that you can buy. But the fans are the pits, they get noisy real fast. So i had to find a way to fix them as they are very expensive and hard to replace. Now i don't have to. Combo of oil and graphite is the very best, by far. One caution, graphite stains worse than
oil, so be careful! I'm talking about staining your clothes and hands.
You can use this system with all CPU fans, video card fans, system fans, and even fans inside power supplies. But one word of caution, its easy to open a power supply and take out the fan, but do be careful as there are voltages there can can hurt you badly. If you don't know what you are doing then wear rubber gloves to get the fan out and to put the fan back in after the
repair!
Trust me, this will work. If the fan spins my method will work for years and I have even fixed fans that were stuck and wouldn't spin! This is better done with the fan on the table but in those cases where you cant or don't want
to take the fan out of the system, that's where the "pen" with the needle comes in again, but i still find a way to get some graphite in as well, graphite is what makes the oil last a long time! And graphite is also an oil, but you need both together for maximum effectiveness. Oil by itself will only last a few weeks or so and then evaporate, and the fan will get noisy again. Its the graphite powder that does the long term job. The oil really only helps to spread the graphite powder around really well so the graphite can do the job!

The type of northbridge fan used on some MSI boards, eg K8N Platinum & Diamond etc, require that you remove the fan from the board first (you will have to remove the motherboard to do this). This is because the top of the shroud is attached from the bottom by two tiny Phillips type screws. Once you have removed the shroud, very gently prise off the fan from the motor assembly. There is no need to try and remove the three other tiny screws that secure the fan motor in place to the bottom half of the shroud. Once removed, you will see that under the fan is a small plastic pin that holds the sleeve bearing in place.

Even though on MSI's website the picture for the PFISR doesn't have a northbridge fan, mine does. So, is there a reason why this thing is so bloody loud? It sounds like a piece of plastic is just barely sticking up into the fans, creating a rattling sound. If I turn my CPU fan speed down to a moderate speed, the NB fan is the loudest thing in my case, and I have five 80mm case fans and two PSU fans going full speed.
Does my motherboard have fan control for this fan? Is it possible to turn the speed down some? What if it I just remove the damned thing altogether? I don't really see the point of having the fan there anyway, since both it and the heatsink are so small that they can't really be moving that much heat. How hot does the northbridge usually get? Is it possible to overclock the northbridge and see any performance gain?

And I configured Speedfan to only run the NB fan at 75%, and it is now much quieter.

845E MAX2-LR / USB 2.0 Issue

Just bought the new 845E MAX2-LR, when using Windows ME and USB 2.0 drivers, I get a green circle with a question mark in the device manager under
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller.
This does not apper in Windows XP.
Does anybody know what this green circle means? I have never seen it before.

Be sure you have installed the intel inf first, then after restart install the ICH4 USB2.0 driver .
You need to have an updated bios for it to work, so that might be your problem.

Help! Problem with Microstar 845E Max2-BLR (MS-6398e) and HDD

and i have problem , maybe You can answer me where is the root of this situation.
I connect harddisks to Ata 133 raid controler (IDE 3 and IDE 4) one disc to one IDE port, when i copy files for example 700 mb from one disc to another one , copy process goes very fast, but when i copy the same file from one partition to another partition on the same disc, this process takes me about 5 minutes!!!! where is the problem??? I installed all software for raid, for ata133, intel aplication accelerator, and nothing changed :( , my buddy have the same mainboard , hard disks connected identical like me , on his computer copy process of the same file takes about 2 minutes.!!!. I would try this ... leave your ram at 200...
there is a memory setting .. tha comes set at 8 .. I forgot the name . Doh .. drop it down to 4
then set your FSB to 144 ... see what happens ...
leave the voltage core at defualt. I am doing this with cheap generic 512 ddr 266... .and it works like a charm..
no cold boot issues or glitchy lock ups .
I doubt our boards are much different ...
I have eard Alot of problems with Kingmax =(! ...
Samsung seems to be the best bet !

MS-6398E 845E Max2

I need a redhat linux 8 driver for the onboard Promise Fasttrack133 on my MS-6398E 845E Max2 MSI does not have one and Promise does not have one. Other versions dont work. Any help?

I just found a thread on the OLD Forum with the exact same problem on a different motherboard. There is still no solution, however.

Subject: 845 Ultra CPU or Memory Problems??
This is our first experience with the MS-6398, 845 Ultra.
We installed a 2.0 processor and smelled a foul smell, assume the CPU was burnt and returned it for another. We installed another brand new processor and then the D bracket showed 4 LED, indicating CPU problem.
We then removed the CPU, it appears to still be okay and then for the heck of it, installed another stick of memory. Then the LED's changed to LED2 being green, indicating memory problem.
Now we're still there, no stick of memory will work, we're using PC2100.
Are we missing something? Is there a jumper or setting or something that we aren't seeing or reading about.

You probaply fried the MB look around the MB around the CPU socket see if any of the chips have a bubble on them!

P4N Diamond - Northbridge Fan

Since getting my P4N board (September 2005), the Northbridge Fan has been really noisy. Lately, it has stopped turning at certain times - either while the PC is in use (causing it to shut down) or on startup.
When the problem happens on startup, I have to give it a little push to get started.
What I want to know is - can I replace the fan? If so, how do I get it off.
Also, please could someone recommend a fan that will provide the same level of cooling, but also be quiter. I would also like to know the spec of the fan - can't find details anywhere.
I would have liked to put this post on the Diamond VIP Forum, but can't find a link to the URL for this??

I have temporarily put this fan on (keeping the msi heatsink).

It is spinning at up to 6250rpm, but is slightly quieter than the original msi fan.
Potential problems/issues...
- it is supposed to have a speed of 5400rpm, so I wondering if it being reported at up to 6250rpm is an issue?
- the northbridge is now 47C rather than 45C at idle
- the new fan has 7 blades, the original had 9, so it's looking like the original fan was more efficient at cooling the northbridge chip
I also have the zalman heatsink and will likely replace the msi heatsink with this and use no fan, but wanted to check whether anyone has done this successfully, while keeping a standard intel cpu fan in place.
While I have a couple of minor reservations about the new fan, it does work, whereas the msi fan was pretty much knackered and completely unreliable. I could just replace the msi fan with another msi fan but I would expect that eventually the replacement msi fan would go the same way as the old one?

New bios 845E Max2 is out

Just notice from the msi web site that the new bios version 5.4 is now out for 845E Max2 mobo.

You can email MSI tech support as often as you want but I do think they are either too busy to response or just ignore any support request emails. I have tried couple times to email them some of my minor problems related to this mobo I have and so far I got no response from them.
By the way, the new Bios still have not fix the problem for system hungs during warm boot if you oc the FSB from 100 to 133.

875P NEO northbridge fan

Wonder if anyone can help, I have an MSI NEO 875P Neo, Ive noticed however that whereas the Northbridge fan used to reach around 4000rpm its now maxing at about 3550rpm ?
what rpm should the NB fan run at , if the temperature is cool does the mainboard automatically reduce the NB rpms ? also I am using speedfan to monitor the temps
If the NB fan is on the way out where can i get a decent replacement ?

The board does not have an NB temp sensor, so if you use the NB temp to control the fan speed then it will be adjusted according to whatever stray voltage is on the terminals where the NB sensor should be. I used the CPU temp instead for regulation.
If the fan fails, just remove it and leave the heat sink in place. The heat sink alone provides adequate cooling.

KT600 Northbridge Fan

is it possible to purcahse one of the Northbridge fans (made by MSI) from them, as when I bought the mobo it was pictured with the fan, but it did not ship with it, which was slightly dissapointing.
I am using the KT600 FISR

My KT6 FISR came without the DLEDs, so I just wacked in the card that came with my Dad's Intel MSI motherboard. That worked fine, I guess the problem is buying it, not actually getting it to work or anything like that.
What department should I contact at MSI?
Would I be paying more than £10?

Northbridge fan speed

I just bought a MSI K8N Neo3 nForce 4 mainboard. I have updated the bios to the latest version. Activated cool and quiet, and the smart cpu fan control. When I enter the bios the northbridge fan works at around 7500 rpm! And make so much noise. Can this be correct. Can I somehowe slow it down? It also seem like the cpu fan goes to fast, over 3000, the temperature on the cpu is 30 degrees. It's a AMD semperon 2800+. Somebody help me?

It's been posted many times already.
You could get the zalman fanmate2 to lower the rpm of the NB fan.
It will go as low as 2800rpm,but keeping it around 5400rpm should do the job just fine.
I run it around 5000rpm(jumps up and down between 5000 and 5400) and also I've ordered a replacement fan from msi in the netherlands,it's on the way free of charge.
I did this because now I've greased the standard fan several times already because of the grinding noise it sometimes produces,even at 5400rpm.
Also speed seems to drop down occasionally,so for now I'm fine,but the replacement fan will come in handy since this is leading to a dead end.
This new fan seems to run at approx 5400rpm btw.

This seems in order.If you can't lower the cpu fan speed you might need a bios update or cpu driver update.
Or your cpu isn't supported by the cool&quiet chip.

Northbridge Fan for Neo2-PFS

I just built my first PC with the neo2-pfs and i found out that the northbridge gets too hot. I can feel the heat through my side case fan.
Does anyone else have this motherboard? Can I install a northbridge fan on it? What fan would you recommend?

Yes I have the i865 (P) Series Board, But What do you Mean that you can "Feel" it through the Side of your Case?? How Much do you have your FSB overclocked? Are you Running your Memory Synchronous (1:1 Ratio) with your CPU? ... And yes, you CAN Install a NB Fan, but Believe me if it is not a "Stock" Componant, then I assure you it is NOT Needed, as the Max. Temp. Spec. Limit of the i865's NB is 100C ..Now I know that you are No where Near that with your Board .....But If it Will Make you feel better then there are Many Choices for NB Fans out there...............Sean REILLY875

Northbridge fan

Is it possible to get the original northbridge fan that comes with the board for my KT4 Ultra from MSI?

I use the blue orb and I stuck it on with stickem tape,"thats not the stickem with a gun". seem to work great, you could put a fan on the heat sink, you will need to make the holes bigger in the fan and put bigger screws in i guess but the blue orb does it for me. basically a cooler is a cooler but i choose the vga for it is ment for high heat.

Replacing my Northbridge Fan

My Northbridge fan has stopped and I need to replace it. How do I get the old one out? From reading the forum it looks like this is a common problem and many have probably already done the job. I am hoping I don't have to pull the MB, but I think I might have to. Any precautions to watch out for. Thanks for all replays.

As Henry has already said, you will have to remove the board from the case to do the job. Have a read of this thread :- https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=98720.0 It will give you an idea of alternative coolers available to you.

The only other advice I have for you is to make sure that you've grounded yourself before starting any work, and put the motherboard on a non conductive surface whilst doing the work, so that no damage from static occurs. Also run the pc for a couple of minutes before starting the work so that the chip heats up a bit and softens the old paste, that will make it easier to remove the old cooler without damaging the chip.
