Northbridge temps N/A using CoreCentre - K7N2 Delta Platinum

Hi folks - first post..........
Seeing as the mobo has a fan speed monitor, does it not have the faclity to monitor the temperature of the Northbridge as well??
It's a new board and the bios is v11.2.
The board locked out on me a couple of days ago after I tried running an XP2600+ Thoroubred at 400FSB - I looked for ages on the web to find a cure then found the way to reset the board to default settings here using the start button/insert key method. Thanks for that!!
I'm now running an XP2500 Barton at 400FSB and my cpu temps are around 29 degrees C using the std retail heatsink. (moitored via CoreCentre). I'm a bit miffed that I can't monitor the Northbridge though....
Any ideas??
cheers
D.

Welcome to the forum. The bios only monitors cpu and system temperatures so Core Center reports accordingly. I am not familiar with bios version 11.2. My board was delivered with version 11.1 but until recently I have been using the B30 or 11.3 bios. You may well find that Live Update will offer you an upgrade to bios version B40 (aka 11.4) until version B50 is released. Resist the temptation as the B40 version has caused stability problems for a number of users.

• MSI K7N2 Delta Platinum

I want to update my mother board, I am thinking of getting a K7N2 Delta Platinum has anyone got anything good or bad to say about this board?

Hi Ballie,
I've recently got one of these.
Had a lot of fun installing the operating system etc direct from a K7N2G-ILSR board. Most of them revolved around the fact that the RAID controllers are different so I had no choice but to wipe the discs and do a clean install. BACK EVERYTHING UP BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING (yes I'm shouting, so you can hear me....)
I've still not got a proper answer to the problem in this thread yet http:// RAID not fault tolerant on K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum?
, but the board works fine. The overclocking capabilities of the CoreCell technology are very good. I got it up to somewhere in the 2500's before it crashed and then it restarted beautifully at a setting just below the one it went out on, all on it's own.
I'm not running it overclocked presently.
I think my personal preference would be for a board with the Promise RAID controller as it is configurable, whereas nVidia's Raidman is purely a look and see program. If they sorted that out to the same standard as Promise then I would be happy. Obviously, if you don't plan to use RAID that isn't going to be an issue.
Plenty of USB ports, etc. and nice easy colour coded plugs, etc. to make sure you shove them connectors in all the right holes. Has 9 holes for attaching the board to the case, so plugging things like memory chips into it doesn't cause it to bend as much as the less well supported boards. I'd still plug things in on a flat surface before mounting the board though.
The CPU temperature sensor is one of those bendy wire things, so make sure you peel the paper off the underside of the chip and carefully curve the temp wire over into a U shape so that it springs up and presses flat against the underside of the centre part of the chip for best accuracy.
One odd thing - the temperature readings that are active in my CoreCell are CPU and System. The Northbridge temp isn't showing, dunno why... anyone got any suggestions??
A lot of the connectors are concentrated on the right side of the board and this can give rise to a few cable conflicts with things like HDD's getting in the way, but if you have a case with a choice of HDD mounting slots you can easily overcome these minor niggles.
On the whole I like this board. If it does as well as the last board I think I'll be well happy. Hope this has helped you. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

• Help! amd xp3000+ barton temp's.... k7n2 delta ilsr

Hi all, (sorry for the lengthy post)
Ive recently built a new system based on the K7N2 DELTA ILSR, great mobo, however my cpu temps are extremely high! on idle 48C and on load nearly 60C. the mobo temp hits approx 40c on load and 34 on idle.
I had an issue with cooling as the cpu heat diode would freeze my pc as it was hitting temps of 58c on idle. i was using the coolermaster aero 7+.... no good at all!!!!! even when on full rpm. Now im using a vantec 80mm fan on a Thermalright SLK-800A. much improved, however still extremely hot.
after reading this review (section headed: Heat Dissipation: Thermal Conditions and S2K Bus Disconnect) :
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlonxp-3000.html
......on "S2k bus disconnect" created by AMD for the barton range.
As the article states, it reduces Cpu temps ALOT!! but im not too sure ion how to activate it or even if my MSI motherboard supports it....
Can anyone shed some light???
system:
Radeon 9800
1GB 3200 Ram
xp 3000+ Barton
Sound Audigy 2
Thanks, Sav

Sorry about the long reply!!! the first thing i would like to say is why does this happen at 58C even with the bios temp settings diabled??? pehapes MSI could Answer this?
I have spent countless hours trying to fix this problem and a lot of £££. A bit of background to me I am a design engineer and i like my PC to work well. I have the following main components
xp3200+ based system (Max die 85C)
with dual 512ddr sticks running at 400mhz
Matrox Parphilia
10K SATA hard disk
7,200 133ATA hard drive
Plus motherboard Nvidia chipset
these all kick out a lot of heat the (CPU contributing 76.8w).
first i started out with a very cheap case and standard amd heatsink. I found after about 5 minutes my pc kept crashing i automatically thought that it was probably the case temperature so monitored this found every time cpu reached 58C it crashed on the dot. The only conclusion i can draw from this that this MB has some thermal protection that can not be switched off but i am guessing perhapes MSI would like to answer this.
I quickly decided as an engineer that the best thing would be to go and buy a aluminuim case with lots of case fans (Basically a big heatsink itself). After a lot of searching i settled for a Coolermaster ATC110. It has four case fans all run at full speed all the time. Now this stoped the crashing problem it only now crashes if i put it under continous loading. Then i went out and bought a new cpu heatsink to replace the amd standard one. This had a minor effect on cpu temp but again under high loads the system crashed at 58C. Obvoiusly as an engineer i satred to think that the amount of noise the system with all its fans going at max is like being put in a wind tunnel.
I then turned to looking at the thermal diserpation requiremnts of all the bits in my system. I worked out that i need to disserpate 281Wmax of heat with my current setup. The kind of heat a small electric fire produces!!!. I begun to wounder if i could shift enough air through the two exhaust fans at the rooms ambient temp to do this. After some calculations I found that my case exhaust case fans are only just surfficent to disspate this amount. Which could explain this the crashing. because the higher the case temp the lower the capability of the heatsinks to conduct heat away from the item.
In the end i gave up with active cooling methods (heatsinks and fans) and realised my only option was to go for external cooling. I now have the system setup with a koolance exos cooling both hardisks graphics card cpu and MBchipset. I know this is very extreme but the case fan noise got to me now i have disconected all case fans except for the ones in my thermaltake power supply which are virtually silent. After about 12 evenings of testing and installation I now have a system which is not only stable but the CPU temp is only 32C.
Obvoiusly getting the heat out of the case is a good idea. The Exos is only running at it's lowest setting which means the  fans arnt making any noticable noise.
MOST IMPORTANTLY IT DOES NOT CRASH ANY MORE. AND THERE IS THE PSSIBILTY OF OVERCLOCKING.
The question still remains though why 58C?

• JPW1 used on K7N2-Delta -AMD??

I need to know if i need to use the JPW1 connector on my mb(ATX 12V Power Connector), i was under the impression that it is for Pentium processors , but then why would it be on a AMD based mb , i have been running the system without it plugged in, but im wondering if i would see any benifits by using it??, or will it harm something if i plugged it in after running my system without it , for a few months???

K thank you for the info!  i have tried to find answers in the manual , but it didnt tell much about what to use or what not to use or why ,
oh and i guess i misunderstood your first post, i thought when u said that the 20 pin drew about 8a , about the load of the CPU , i thought u meant the 20 pin was sufficent, but thanks for clarifying , i will plug it in next time i shut off my pc .

• [nForce] K7N2 Delta Platinum built in firewall, advice?

Ok... well how many of you are using this built in firewall?
I have obtained two versions
Network management tools version 4.57 from the 6.11 package
and
Network management tools version 4.66 from the 6.37 package
currently I am using zone alarm and I am satisfied but some of the programs I use (dc++) do not like zone alaram
so some od the downloaded files are corrupt (skipping mp3s and corrupted zip files)
to conclude I would like to know are you people that are using this (nforce) firewall satisifed?
and which one should I install?

The firewall uses a technology called SPI, stateful packet inspection.
Every packet that comes in is checked for a few things,
Like your IP address inside the packet. (destination of the packet)
If you IP address is not there then the packet is blocked.
This type of firewall is very secure but unlike software firewalls you do not have
application filtering.
The SPI firewall allows a program through the firewall or blocks it.
A good software firewall allows the program + you specify the ports for that program.
With the SPI one if you specify a port it will open a hole in the firewall and allow
anything to come in/out.
Do you see how the software one is more flexible?
Apart from that the firewall does work, I use it with a NAT based firewall in my router.
If you are downloading / using P2p programs the software firewall is much better, The firewall can cause some P2P programs to freeze.
A few people experience terrible problems with the firewall, random crashes/BSODs.
No one knows why yet.
The nvidia website has a lot of info about the firewall too.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/feature_activearmor.html
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_16451.html
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13034.html
Your one does not have active armour but the firewall is exactly the same.
Now you should check your memory.
The best advice in the world and you choose to ignore it.

• K7N2 Delta bios versions 5.3 & 7.3 released

Bios version 5.3 for the K7N2 Delta-L and 7.3 for the K7N2 Delta-ILSR have been released and are available via Live Update only at present.
Fixes posted are:-
-Modify CPU temperature detect
-Fixed Nvidia FX5800 and FX5900 compatability issue
I have downloaded 7.3 for my K7N2 Delta-ILSR and CPU temps are higher than before as expected. So far no problems.

I was using my K7N2 Delta nicely but after flashing the BIOS from 5.0 to 5.3 in LiveUpdate3 (all OK) and then when LiveUpdate ask to reboot... GOOD BYE!
When bootin the D-lights show that I have a processor damaged or not intalled properly (two red light up, and two green down...).
My processor is an Old Tbird 1.2 Ghz with 100FSB.
The question is: Why the mother stops recognicing the processor if before flashing BIOS worked nicely?.
J10 and J11 jumpers:
When I opened case to check out, I had the green J10 and J11 jumpers closed in the mother. The J10 was in safe mode, and the J11 jumper was closed...(133FSB-166FSB??).
I only have another athlon 1.1 ghz FSB100 processor to test the mobo, but I don´t want to take the risk of burn that one two (if is that the problem, of course).
So... I want to know how can I reflash the bios back (I have the old BIOS in a backup floppy disk, of course)... or if anyone else have the same problem as me....
Thanx a lot guys, and please help me... I´m very sad by now... because I don´t know how to get my computer to work.

• Boot problems with IDE HD and SATA HD on K7N2-Delta L

I'll get right to the point.
I have an PCI SATA Controller Card in my system (using a K7N2 Delta-L motherboard, BIOS v5.7 with an Athlon XP 2800+ and Corsair ValueSelect 512MB DDR400 RAM on a single stick).  My system works fine in it's original configuration of drives (CD-RW drive only drive on IDE bus, and SATA drive only hard drive).  However, upon installing my IDE hard drive from my old computer, the system will no longer boot right.  I am connecting the other IDE HD as Slave on the CD-RW's bus, as I'm reserving the second bus for bigger and better things such as a DVD burner, and speed isn't too important for this hard drive as it's just my MP3/data I don't need in a hurry drive.
In the current configuration, all three drives are detected properly (CD-RW and HD detected on the IDE detection screen, and the SATA drive detected on the SATA card's detection screen).  However, after the SATA detection screen, the system just stops.  The cursor is still blinking, but nothing comes up.
Both hard drives are Western Digitals (IDE is a ATA100 Western Digital 60GB at 5400 RPM, and the SATA is a Western Digital 36.7GB at 10,000 RPM), and the CD-RW is a HP CD-Writer 9100.  I have Windows XP installed on both hard drives (first partition of the IDE, which is divided into two), but considering the system doesn't even attempt to boot I don't think that's an issue.  I've gone through and tried enabling and disabling "Boot Other Device", but still no love.  My boot order is set to Floppy, CD-ROM, and SCSI, which works fine when the SATA drive is in there.
Any idea what's up?  I can provide more information upon request, as I'm sure there's something I forgot to mention that's important.
Thanks.

Take a look at this link, https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=71384, I think you both have the same problem. It seems that a sata drive doesn't like having an ide drive in the system that has an active partition.
Do like Wonkanoby suggest, reformat the ide hard drive and make sure that it's not set to be the active partition in the system. Boot with a 98 boot floppy if you have to so you can format the ide drive to fat32, once you can boot up using the sata drive you can use xp disk manager to convert the ide drive to ntfs.

• K7N2 Delta problem

Hey all,
Ive used a K7N2 Delta board for about a year with now probs at all...  until now.  Couple days ago i decided a new case was in order, i purchased case went home and transfered all the components over, as it was i was changing a few parts too so i decided to go with a rebuild followed by a format/reinstall to start a fresh.
I put pc together, reinstalled windows xp pc booted fine, then i spent the next 30 mins or so installing all the programs i normally use. This pc is 1 of 2 i use and is lower spec as i only use it for work purposes, i use 2 graphice cards in it for dual monitor, a geforce mx 400(agp slot) and a tnt 32 something (pci slot)  after doing a bit of installing i went to the bios, the pc was booting using the lower card as pri display, all i wanted and all i did was change the first display in the bios to AGP. I hit F10 to save and restart... and nothin  pc hasnt done a thing since.
I get no warning beeps at all when i try to power up, although the power lights are on and cpu/system fans run. I checked the D-bracket, the code it goes to as soon as you power up and it stays there is'Initializing Hard Drive Controller' I aint no wizard when i come to fixing or building pcs but as a DIY'er i still think i hold my own,  ive done or tried everything i can think off...  clear cmos, change battery, remove components, change components, ive tried to boot with nothin connected to everything connected,  board wont even beep, just get same d-bracket message everytime, im under the impression that a new board is needed but i thought i'd post here in the slight chance someone might have a idea, or maybe able to tell me something i havent thought of.
thanks

Ive done everything described above, and redone it just to make sure  lol   Not being one to quit easily ive been messing around with the board,  now im starting to think there maybe some life left in it after all,   first off if i remove the memory it now signals the warning beep, something i wasnt doing, also the d-bracket code has changed, its now hanging on 'memory detection test'   i know this memory is good, plus ive tried another module in with same results.  Yet another strange thing, when i try to boot up with a xp2000 (also tried a xp1700) within a few seconds it shuts down, but if i try my 1300 duron and change mhz to suit even though im not getting anywhere near actually booting, it atleast stays on giving the memory code. Ive been told,  dont know if this is right, that if i take the bios chip out of the board for 24 hrs it will reset the bios back to factory setting (bios has been flashed a couple times but not recently)  any one know if this might help, or even if this will work?   This board acting strange,   bit of a mystery goin on ere  lol   any more suggestions?
thanks again
shaun

• K7N2 Delta -ILSR going up in smoke

I just rebuilt a system using my K7N2 Delta - ILSR that I had just taken out of my old case (got new board to replace it) for a friend of mine. Everything was working fine for 2 days and then all of a sudden the computer shut off and about 5 seconds later it turned back on and then I started to smell something starting to cook. I quickly pulled the power but the damage was all ready done. The FSB chip was cooked (the one that has the green sticker that says FSB400). It had melted a hole thru the middle of the sticker about a 1/2 inch across. The board is only a year old and I was wondering if anyone else has heard of or had this happen to them. All bios settings were normal. Meaning nothing was overclocked.

Quote
when i come to think of it i heard of it once before.
someone left his computer on when he was out of country for 3 months.
when he come back he could se the north bridge had melted.
Thats scary. My Computer never gets turned off unless i am going to do some kind of maintenance. I think i built it in April and basically it has been on ever since. ( presume the warranty will cover for this kind of eventuality. My Bios is set for stock speeds and voltages. The room that the computer is in does have a working and regularly checked smoke alarm though,

• Sata on K7n2 delta (2nd time)

I have once asked this question but I need it explained for the second time.
does K7n2 delta platinum has nforce or promise sata controller?
I have reinstaled my computer too many times and have changed too much
of hardware... but one thing that was allways fast was my SATA Maxtor.
I have recently burned my radeon so i bought a new one and did a format of hdd to do a clean install of xp.
Currently in my device manager I have nVidia MCP2S Serial ATA Compatible Contoller (v2.6). Is there a better driver for this board than nVidias?
I think I have used Promise fasttrak controller earlier or I am imagining I'm not sure but
I think that my hdd was faster.
Suggestions?

have u gottten the current Nforce drivers 5.10 for XP 32bit
The Unified Driver supports all nForce platform processors. The UDP contains support for all nForce components in a single driver download and installation, making it simple to upgrade to the latest nForce drivers.

• Proposed new build K7N2-Delta L

Hello,
I am looking at a new build using a K7N2-Delta L MB. The proposed parts are:
PSU: Antec True 550
Video: PNY NVIDIA GeForce FX5700LE (128MB)
CPU: Athlon xp 3000 (333 Mhz FSB)
DVD Writer, Tape Drive(Certance Travan 40, IDE), etc.
OS: Win XP Pro SP2
Memory: Mushkin
On the memory, I am looking at either Mushkin
512 MB PC2700 DDR 222 Level II Black x 2 (1 GB)
or
512 MB PC3200 DDR 222 Black Hi Perf LII V2-New Release x 2 (1 GB)
(for possible upgrade later to XP3000 or XP 3200 400 MHz CPU)
I have several questions concerning memory.
1. Would it be better to go for the PC3200 memory even if the CPU isn't upgraded?
I believe the DDR 400 memory will run at DDR 333 speed. Am I Correct?
2. If I were later to add an additional 512 MB to the system (1.5 GB) would I lose  the dual channel mode?
3. Has anyone had any experience with using the PC3200 DDR 222 Level II V2-new release Memory sticks?
I do not intend to overclock the proposed system.
It will be used for general computing use and some light printed circuit board layout work and Ham radio digital transmitting and receiving software.
I have talked with the Mushkin sales people and they are saying either memory listed above will work great at 2-2-2-11 settings.
What do the VERY knowledgeable folks on this forum think? I have read the entire forum and would like some input. Sorry this is such a long post.
Thanks,
Mark5

• [nVidia] k7n2 delta2 platinum FSB

I have just bought the following to replace my dead Athlon 1200@1533mhz
Amd xp 2800+
MSI k7n2 delta platinum (downgraded the bios to v3)
Corsair value dual channel 2*512 DDR
I have overclocked the cpu to 10,5*220 = 2310mhz, but vould rather like to run at a higher FSB eg.: 10*230mhz. This setting is, alasm not stable.
Therefore, how high can you push this motherboard?
What settings have you used to achieve this fsb?
Any advice on running higher fsb?

Hi
Each overclock is dependent on many variables and not every component will have the capacity of other identical components.
That disclaimer said, the processor may not be able to reach 230mhz since it is a 166fsb processor or you might have to raise the vcore of the processor a notch or two to help it get there.
I have one of those processors running at 12.5 times 188 with 1.675 vcore and folding 24/7.  The motherboard is capable of doing the speed that you want, the components in it may not be able.
Try lowering the fsb and raising the multiplier to see what the limit of the system is.
