Norton 360 sent me a high CPU useage note for plugin-container.exe today. Should I be concerned?

I received a high CPU message from Norton 360 for a plug in named plugin-container-exe today. I do not know what it does, should I be concerned if I see it again? What does it do?
I use Windows 7 OS, Office 2007

This so called liquid damage that they are reffering
to probably occured when I was working and had my
computer on the desk...someone must have been
drinking a coke cause when I came back there was a
coke can on its side, but not exactly very close to
the computer, and the liquid had seeped underneath
the machine. When I picked the mac up there was
liquid on the bottom of it, but only because those
little useless rubber standoffs they put on the
bottom of these Macbook Pro's was not high enough to
be above the thickness of a water based liquid as it
runs across a desk. At that point I promptly had
unplugged the battery from my computer and the power
cable and dried it all off. From that day no NEW
problems had surfaced, the battery and heat issue
had already existed.I didn't expect that any should
because the liquid had only reached the bottom side
of the computer and it was shut off quickly.
Where was your desk?
I think you should find the drinker/spiller of the coke.
Getting electronics wet usually kils them, they aren't made water proof or even resistant.
Logic board+super drive+batery=$1200 probably not far off.
Some one owes you 1200 cokes and IMHO it is not Apple.

  • Why do I keep getting a Norton AV pop up message "High CPU useage for plug in container on Firefox"?

Norton keeps giving me a lower right hand pop up comment “High CPU usage for plug in container on Firefox." Is there something I need to set to fix this? Should I be concerned? Sometimes this occurs with no other application running.

IMO, the detection threshold is set too low in that Norton app. Contact Norton support to find out how to set it higher, or how to turn it off.
Or quit using Norton. ''I hate the garbage they sell. IMO, it is good for one thing, making money for retailer's and for helping PC techs make money fixing what it does to PC's their customers bring in for repairs.''

  • Clamd high CPU useage

I have an Intel Xserve running 10.4.11
I followed Alex's tutorials some months back and upgraded clamav, amavisd and spamassassin.
All has been working well and I have been pleased with the performance.
However I decided approx 6 weeks ago to move from using clamscan to clamd.
On and off I have been getting exceptionally high CPU useage from clamd which requires me to kill off the clamd process as everything almost grinds to a halt.
I initially put it down to using Carbon Copy Cloner at night, but it has been getting more frequent during the day to the point where mail was just being queued.
    I killed clamd again
    ran
    sudo /bin/launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    sudo /bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
but then all my incoming mail started going deferred
    so I again reloaded amavisd.plist
then ran postsuper -r ALL, to requeue all the mail. This worked for a few minutes then clamd started going high CPU again.
Also in logs I started seeing in mail.log
    Mar 25 12:30:50 fileserver postfix/smtp[147]: 502232589239: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1], delay=2616, status=deferred (host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 451 4.5.0 Error in processing, id=00791-05, virus_scan FAILED: virus_scan: ALL VIRUS SCANNERS FAILED: Clam Antivirus-clamd av-scanner FAILED: CODE(0x1801270) Too many retries to talk to /tmp/clamd (Can't connect to UNIX socket /tmp/clamd: Connection refused) at (eval 51) line 310. at (eval 51) line 511.; ClamAV-clamscan av-scanner FAILED: /usr/local/bin/clamscan DIED on signal 11 (000b) at (eval 51) line 511. (in reply to end of DATA command))
So I commented out the entry for using clamd in /etc/amavisd.conf
and rolled back to previous version of clamv.
I am now getting mail in, and although very brief high clamscan usage it is working, the queue has been cleared.
But now I am getting no logging in anything apart from one file, /var/log/asl.log.76
    this has thousands of entries
[Time 2008.03.24 22:08:47 UTC] [Facility local6] [Sender clamd] [PID 18032] [Message accept() failed: Too many open files;] [Level 3] [UID -2] [GID -2] [Host fileserver]
syslogd is also running very high CPU.
Has anyone any ideas what caused my initial problems and what I may have done now to break the logging. ???

    Thanks Alex
    will schedule downtime to upgrade.
    update
Reboot, again, of server cleared my logs problem (what a popular person I am )

  • Alerts from Norton re high memory usage by plugin-container.exe

Running Firefox 3.6.13 on Windows XP Pro Service Pack 3. The details from Norton are as follows:
    1. Program Path C:\program files\Mozilla firefox\plugin-container.exe
    2. Program Description - Plugin Container for Firefox
    3. Memory - 1,676 MB used
    4. Disk Write Activity - 10 MB (total for this process)
    5. File Origin - Source File = updater.exe, File Created: firefox.exe,updater.exe,plugin-container.exe

Probably the alerts are nothing to worry about, and you may wish to suppress that particular alert.
On a couple of old spec legacy machines I recently switched. <br>Partly because of economics, and partly because , of the two, <br> Norton can perform better (in my opinion) on legacy machines.
The first thing I did notice was that Norton does pulse updates and background tasks very frequently (configurations can be changed) by default, and flags up quite a number of alerts.
The Norton (NIS) 'Insight' facility will be flagging up firefox plugin container.exe. It can be configured to suppress the alerts from firefox plugin container, but unless disabled will probably just flag up another busy process or application. It is not flagging it up because it is a known security problem, merely because of the amount of activity.
I imagine the alerts are when you are playing videos, probably with FlashPlayer, and may well depend on the resolution/quality of the videos.
If you think the results are unusual or unexpected see:
    *[[High memory usage]]
*[[Firefox consumes a lot of CPU resources]]
PS not sure what is happening with this post are some phrases unacceptable eg alternative expressions about economics; one paragraph was behaving oddly in preview resorted to manually adding break tags to keep it within the container.

  • Ebay causes plugin-container.exe to use high cpu

I am using firefox 6.0.1 with Windows XP SP3 and have noticed that opening my ebay summary page causes plugin-container.exe to use between 60 and 80% of available CPU time. I haven't noticed this problem on other pages nor did I notice it before the recent firefox upgrade.
Not sure if this a firefox or ebay issue.

  • Plugin-container.exe is EATING cpu clock cycles and slowing down my computer big-time. Is there a fix to prevent this, or do I just have to disable this subsidiary program and take the consequences?

Whenever I have an audiovisual display running in a Firefox (5.0) tab, the program "plugin-container.exe" swamps my CPU, jumping up to 95% of processing clock cycles. This makes all online video displays hang and jump, and it's a pain in the neck. Is there any way to mitigate this?

That's supposed to indicate it's your plug-ins like Flash that is the problem.
You might try changing hardware acceleration, a setting within Flash either turn if off or on.

  • Plugin-container.exe. I realise this has been raised before but there never seems to have been any firm reply from Firefox as to how to rectify the problem, as I have just had 94% use of my CPU by this and my use is so slow it is impossible. Emjayel

plugin-container.exe is a disaster and looking at previous forums it has been so for at least a year without any resolution. As I said before at one stage this was using 94% of my CPU and my system was reduced to a snails pace.
Surely Firefox should give some useful alternative.
    Emjayel

Try going to http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck and see if your plugins are out of date.

  • Plugin-container.exe using 40% of cpu

    == Issue
    ==
Firefox is having problems with certain web sites
    == Description
    ==
    FYI, (thanks to all developers)
I rarely go to porn sites but the popunder-windows they generate caused the plugin-container.exe to use 40% of cpus (2 cpu). This is after I had closed all tabs and left my computer unattended. This popunder-window might have very-very-unusually slipped my attention due to my errand.
    Thanks again

Only if i have 2 sites open i.e. http://www.youtube.com and http://www.mobileman.com (or any other site), i have trouble opening a third page i.e. http://www.google.com. Is it possible, that firefox is using a lot of CPU (i.e. plugin-container)??

  • Plugin-container.exe ate my CPU and my goldfish

After installing Firefox 3.6.4 and version 3.6.6 respectively, there was a process running in the background, called plugin-container.exe. It immediately began to eat my CPU, my RAM and my goldfish. I have a fish tank in my room and after installing the FF update, my goldfish disappeared. Can I get a new goldfish from Mozilla?
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
== after installing v3.6.4 and higher

Same problem...XP SP3, X64. Followed the suggestions outlined in this thread:
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/704242
which, basically, was to restart in safe mode to see if an extension is causing the problem. Well, I restarted in safe mode, tried to watch a youtube video, and it still runs like trash (to say it nicely). So its definitely not an extension causing the problem, its this trashy container.
Flash Player is already a container. Meaning its already an intermediate layer between the user and the OS. Which is one of the things Steve Jobs talked about as for why Flash is not on iPhone. The more layers you introduce, the less efficiently something can run.
So basically Mozilla took an existing container (Flash player) and wrapped it in ANOTHER container, further removing it from the OS. Whose brilliant idea was that??? Its like watching TV as filmed through someone's web cam.
Total garbage. With each release of FF, video playback gets worse and worse...

  • Plugin-container.exe takes over and uses 100% of my CPU locking me out and leaving my PC non-functioning. Is this a bug, or a memory leak, in the Firefox software? Can anything be done to fix this problem?

In looking at Windows Task Manager I found that plugin-container.exe was taking over 100% of my CPU and my system was frozen. Is this a memory leak or other bug?

Thank you! I have been having problems with Adobe Flash since downloading the new 11.1 version. I will download it again and reinstall it, hopefully that will correct the problem.

  • Plugin-container.exe is using 90-100% CPU - even while running Firefox in safe-mode. Can I fix this?

I am using fire fox 5.0 (after using 3.6 for what seems like forever) and the plugin-container.exe has been sucking up my CPU power like a vampire. It had been doing that in 3.6 but not as much. I figured if I upgraded the problem would go away, but no, it has not. After reading some other similar posts, I ran Firefox in safe mode with no plugins running and sure enough after browsing for a bit it started running slower and used 90-100% of my CPU. Is there any way to fix this issue? Or am I doomed? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

That's supposed to show you the problem isn't Firefox, don't know how successful that actually is. You can delete it so that it starts up again. Susggest restarting Firefox when you see it has used about an hour of CPU time as the next hour of CPU time will take shorter to get there and you will be locked out.
Also see this -- the solution on all the items seem to fix a lot of problems with the places.sqlite database.
    :'''freezing at regular intervals''': http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals

  • Why does plugin-container.exe hog so much cpu usage?

When FF is running with some application (ie flash or maybe shockwave) or some type of embedded function, the cpu usage for plugin-container is generally between 60 and 80 percent. This causes extreme lag and reduced functionallity. Quite frankly it is extremely annoying to have things run so slowly.

Somehow this bug came up on my radar yesterday later in the day: the first two comments indicate different plugins, and the third refers to the Acrobat plugin:
<blockquote>This seems to happen if Adobe Reader is used for displaying PDF documents (pdfjs.disabled set to true and Preferences > Applications > PDF to "Adobe Reader (in Firefox)").<br><br>Opening two tabs displaying PDFs and closing one crashes the other one.<br><br>Was able to reproduce with Firefox 36.0.1 and Adobe Reader plugin "Adobe Acrobat 11.0.10.32". When I tried to reproduce it later again in the same profile (or on Nightly and Beta), the tab didn't crash.</blockquote>

Sounds like your issue, but it's puzzling that they got a tab to crash and in your case only plugin-container.exe crashed.

  • The plugin-container.exe is using 100% cpu usage???

After I open a few different pages or tabs within the pages, the plugin-container.exe max's my cpu usage and the system hangs horribly. It comes back and then hangs again. The plugin-container is reasonable new, because I don't recall seeing it in the Task Manager. Is there a way to fix this?? I know it's related to some apple piece of garbage software that I could totally do without if that helps.
    Thanks

Plugin-container was introduced in Firefox 3.6.4 to run certain plugins in isolation from the browser, so that when an offending plugin crashes, it does not crash the entire browser, just the tab with the offending plugin. There is information about plugin-container and a method to disable plugin-container in the following article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins
If you disable plugin-container, your entire browser will crash if a plugin crashes. If you choose to disable plugin-container, restart Firefox to be sure that plugin-container closes; once started, plugin-container remains open until you restart Firefox.

  • Plugin-container.exe占用cpu太高

Firefox 3.6.4 introduced this plugin-container.exe to make sure that plugins are better behaved. So if you're watching a video or playing a game and it crashes because of a faulty Flash plugin, only the plugin will crash and it wouldn't take down all of Firefox.

  • I find 'plugin-container.exe' takes up 68-91% of my CPU and effectively hangs my machine; how can I avoid this, from happening?

You can disable the plug-in container for one or two plug-ins, or for all the plug-ins it works for. <br />
