Norton Anti-Virus allows takeover of Mac's

First it was Norton Utilities that was screwing up Panther and made obsolete by Tiger, now Norton has furthered it's revenge (it seems to me) by recently announcing all it's Anti-Virus software will allow takeover of Mac's.
This company is not to be trusted in my opinion and I'm glad I haven't installed any of their products. As always, completely trust the source before giving a admin password to a program.
Don't run software from a music cd (Sony rootkit) and don't give Norton "anything" your admin password.

I've recently read that Sony-BMG has really been taking some heat over this. It seem that Sony-BMG has created serious security, privacy and consumer protection problems that have damaged music lovers everywhere.

Has anyone tried this new Anti-Virus from Symantec?
It has caught my attention, but I am not sure about infecting my Mac OS with a Norton product.

I went and looked... $69!?? for dual bundle? You may not want Norton AV messing with Leopard or need it; there is ClamXav; there are free AV for Windows, however I believe you want a full security suite (rootkit, malware, spyware, firwall, etc) for Windows.
I remember back with Peter Norton Computing, great people - and product - nearly 20 yrs ago, but.
And like I said, an excellent, top rated suite for same price would be Kaspersky.

Why is Norton Anti-virus bad for mac?

Hi,
I like to know why Norton Anti-virus is bad for mac? Someone told me it's because norton digs around in the directory and that's a no no. Has anyone had bad experiences with norton? I like to know the pros and cons, thanks.

NAV is not "bad for mac."
Do not believe the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) spread about Norton AntiVirus. A good bit of that is undeserved, especially when it comes to NAV 10, which is the Tiger-compatible version and what I use.
I recently engaged in a debate on this subject in this thread, so you can read some of my thoughts there in response to the usual FUD spread about NAV and Symantec Norton products in general.
There are security threats that can affect your Mac besides those cited by Kurt. There is more than the mere threat of passing along Windows viruses.

A little late to the game, but .sit files are Stuffit files as developed by http://www.stuffit.com/ Apple used to use this compression format, but does no longer, and no longer includes the free Stuffit Expander program made by Stuffit.com. If you need to extract an old .sit uninstaller, get it from Stuffit.com. And also any company making such a program for Mac OS X should seriously consider upgrading their downloads to be .dmg.zip files instead, which are more easy to extract on Mac OS X without downloading extra software.

Norton Anti virus for OLD Mac.

Does any one know where I can download ( CD rom died along time ago) a copy of Norton anti Virus poss ver 9 i think thats the one that works with OS 8.1 > .I have a 1400c/166 power book that my wife uses for her MA. etc Some how we have aquired the virus w97M.Thus.gen via a MS word doc and is now corrupting any (poss only MS word doc s) attachments sent out . eg. all of the Ma. work.

Time Machine and Norton Anti Virus

I started getting error messages from Time Machine after I installed Norton Anti Virus. Norton found virus issues on the Time Machine Disk, but on on the Mac from where all the files originated.
Are there particular settings I need to use them together?

Don't allow Norton to touch your TM backup volume. Unless your employer requires you to use anti-virus software I would recommend uninstalling it. There are no Mac viruses. The software is really not necessary.
If removing it is not an option for you, then be sure Norton does not attempt to check your TM backup volume. If it does it will misunderstand the content of certain files used by TM. If it makes any changes as a result of this your entire TM backup will become useless (and may be so already.)

Once and for all: Do I need anti-virus software for my Mac?

I've always heard that you don't really need anti-virus or anti-spyware software for Macs - but I do wonder that there has to be viruses about that would affect Macs?
I do alot of creative and professional work on my Mac. The data on it, means a **** of a lot to me, and I'd hate for my Mac to be infected with something horrible.
Could anybody please tell me if I really do need anti-virus or anti-spyware software for my iMac? And if I do, which one do you recommend? (Ideally I would want it to be cheap and not hog lots of system resources)...

I can only give you my personal experience on this one.
The short answer is "no". I've been using macs for the past 4 years, my partner for many more. Neither I nor she have an anti virus program installed.
We both use firewall on both the os x setup and via our router. I tend to install the security updates posted by apple after they are released and check the forums to be aware of any potential problems.
A much better idea is to back up your important projects etc on a regular basis to dvd and external hard disk.
I have one experience of anti-virus software on the mac:
About 2.5 years ago i thought i had a virus - my diskspace was being eaten up at a very very fast rate - and i was worried. Found out that the os update from 10.3.2 to 10.3.5 had an incompatability issue with the mcafee shock game controller driver (obscure eh!)
Anyway, after this experience and deleting the driver which i no longer needed, i decided to err on the side of caution and tried out both mcafee and norton. Both of which slowed down my system and norton especially caused problems when i was running logic pro etc. really really annoying.
Once i'd got over my "insecure" stage and having spoken to other mac users i realised anti-virus software was causing many many more issues than resolving any - and besides since then i have still had no problems and have never come across any viruses on mac os x.
It all depends on what makes you feel safer. Personally i wouldn't recommend ant-virus programs... i wonder if anyone has any positive experiences of anti-virus software on the mac?

Anti-virus Software: Norton Anti-virus OR Intego's Virus Barrier?

Hello all.
Let's just assume here that "we need an anti-virus software" and not dwell into the other area of discussion about Macs not needing any, despite the recent 'worms'.
Which one would you get, which one is better overall? Norton Anti-virus or Intego's Virus Barrier?
I think I remember reading a MacWorld magazine back a few months and think they rated Virus Barrier the best.

Norton anti virus

I just got the new imac with OS X 10.4.8. I moved my stuff from my old mac running OS X 10.3.9 via the firewire as asked during set up. The problem I am having is the Norton Anti Virus I was running in 10.3.9 will not run in 10.4.8. I removed the Norton folder from my applications and to the trash, but the yellow and black ying-yang symbol remains in my upper tool bar and it still wants to scan. I have to turn off the scan feature every time I sign on or I keep getting an error message till it is off. I can't find any way to uninstall this stupid thing, and I can not remove it from the toolbar at all. I sure hope someone can help me.

Norton Anti-Virus Poping This Message

Hello all.
On and off these few days, when I start up my mac while a few apps start up, like Mail and iTunes (when I plug in my iPod), I will get this Norton Anti-virus Pop-up Message:
Norton AntiVirus Repair Alert
The compressed archive 17096.emlx is infected. It cound not be repaired. (OK Button)
Sometimes this message will pop up a few times continuosly, clicking OK and no more will pop up.

How do I remove Norton Anti-Virus

I purchased my MacPro Early 2008 used, and it had Norton Anti-Virus on it. I deleted all the folders a number of months ago when I got repeated prompts on startup that the program needed to be upgraded, but apparently that did not uninstall it. I just tried to use the RemoveSymantecMacFiles https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/kb20080427024142EN_En dUserProfile_en_us, but it will not accept my admin password. I'm guessing it wants the admin password of the previous owner, who I have no way of contacting.
Any suggestions for a work-around? Apparently it is keeping Super Duper from being able to back up my Mac hard drive so I need to figure this out.

When you buy a machine used, if it comes with the previous owner's stuff on it, the first thing you need to do is erase the hard drive and start fresh. You don't need the hassle of working through all the problems someone else has created - especially someone who would install Norton on their Mac!

MacBook Pro and Norton Anti Virus

I recently recieved an email in my junk folder that I reported to the internet crime bureau. I am new to Mac computers but I have heard that you do not need a anti virus program, Norton, on your computer because Apple runs on a UNIX system. Should I install Norton? I have not had anything "weird" or anything out of the ordinary pop up or happen on my computer. Just want to be cautious. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

The general consensus is that you should not need to install any anti-virus software on your Mac. As you can also run Windows on a Mac, you would still want to install an antivirus program within Windows.
You'll see lots of people that recommend that you stay away from Norton AV. If you do wish to install an antivirus program on your Mac, the most common recommendation (and it's free) is ClamXAV:

Norton Anti-virus-Unable to Live Update (Virus Def) Error/Java 1.4.2

Hello all.
I have Norton Anti-virus 10.1.1 running on my iMac, Live Update has always been set on "auto" scheduling.
Until these few days, I have difficulties Live Updating the latest virus definition, I will get this error message window:
Updating Error
There was an error performing the update (OK button)
I emailed Symantec and got a reply, saying the problem could be due to Java 1.4.2, they ask me to re-install Java 1.4.2
However, a check at Apple's Download site reveals no single stand-alone Java 1.4.2 installer, only updates. Is Java 1.4.2 part of the current OS or was from previous OS?
Anyway when I tried downloading the Java 1.4.2 Update, my iMac refuses, in the installer it says:
You cannot install Java 1.4.2 Update 1 Package on this volume. This volume does not contain a version of Java that needs updating.
So if Java is the problem like what Symantec Support points out, how can I re-install Java 1.4.2?

Don't touch anything in the Receipts directory unless you know what you're doing.

Paraphrasnig what I wrote earlier: If you see the Live Update error again, check the ends of the logs cited in my "Checking Console for clues" FAQ for any messages related to LiveUpdate problems, e.g. messages citing LiveUpdate that were written to the ends of the logs I cite in my FAQ at the time the problem occurred. If you check immediately after the problem occurs, the messages — if any — would be at the end of the log.
What could be clearer than that?
3. I suspect the Java 1.4.2 info you were given earlier by Symantec was a red herring, i.e. a false lead. Console-related messages as noted in point 2 above would be helpful.
4. You might want to perform a general checkup for some common troublemakers: run the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
5. Likewise, following the Symantec advice to download the virus defs once and then trying again in a week or so isn't a bad idea.

Norton Anti Virus Live Update stopped working after last system update

Hello,
I am using Anti- Virus version 11 for MAC. It has worked fine for years. Now Live Update will not run.
I have tried reloading and nothing helps. Is anyone experiencing this problem.

FYI:
Norton Anti-virus software is the worst app to install on a Mac. It will slow down the drive and cause all sorts of system issues. Delete Norton and get ClamXav available here, and it's free:

There are no known Mac virus. If you really think anti-virus software is necessary, then use Clamxav. It can detect a trojan horse and malware both.

unless you have a partition for another operating system, such as Windows or Linux, most mac users would agree that any a/v software is completly unnecesary and will do more harm than good. There is a free a/v in the appstore called "ClamXav. Have you installed all software updates and also have you tried youtube using different browsers (chrome, safari, opera, etc)?
