Norton Antivirus 6 and Firewalls

Do I need to use antivirus software such as above or is there some inbuilt to OSX 10.4.4 please?
Thanks
Tom

The Firewall that is included with OSX is one of the best.
Do not use anything Norton on your machine.
There have been way to many reports of corruption and freezes and stoppages of the OSX Operating System.
If you feel it necessary to have a Virus Software I suggest you look at.

  • Norton Antivirus 12 and Mac OS 10.7.2

I am having trouble with Norton Antivirus 12 on my iMac using Mac OS 10.7.2. When I open the program the Automatic Protection keys are turned off. They
should be on at all times. Can anyone give me some help on this problem?

Norton has a very bad reputation here (thus Barney's response).  I have no personal experience with it, but at the same time see no purpose whatsoever in having something like Norton installed.  See my Mac Malware Guide for more information.  If, after reading that, you still want or need AV software, get a copy of ClamXav.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

  • I updated and couldn't connect, but I found my culprit, Norton Antivirus.

Three weeks ago I updated my i-tunes to the new 6.03 version and I couldn't to the music store since then. Today i got on the support and services web page and keyed my problem. They said, among other things, to make sure there aren't any third party virus scan programs on your computer. So I disabled Norton Antivirus fro half an hour and now it works.

I think I have the exact same problem. I've discabled Norton Antivirus too and reinstalled and tried to use itunes but it didn't work. You said you disable for 30 minutes. After that what did you do. When you launched itunes and it went directly to the music store did you get connected right away or did you have to wait for a while in that 30 minute disable period?? Thanks!

  • Mount scan problems with Norton AntiVirus 10.1

Autoscan freezes when I mount iPod in dock, connected to my iMac via a firewire connection. Autoscan will not respond to eject or cancel scan. When I eject the iPod in iTunes, the iPod screen continues to read "Do Not Disconnect".
    Any similar experiences of solutions?

Open Norton Antivirus prefs and turn off scanning of the iPod.
Auto-Protect Mount Scan Preferences do not work as expected when mounting an iPod® using a USB port

  • Norton Antivirus 10 worth it?

A friend of mine has offered to lend me a copy of his Norton AntiVirus version 10. My question is, is it worth it? i owned version 9 on my previous 12" PB and it was even a nightmare keeping it at arms lenght but i'm thinking maybe they improved version 10 any ideas?

This fall, Macworld did a review of Norton Antivirus 10, and gave it pretty good marks. They had previously reviewed Norton 9, and given it lower marks.
FWIW, I use ClamXAv, which is free, but requests a donation (which I did). I have it do a weekly scan, and so far it's only found problems in my mail, ie, Windows virus and phishing. I would recommend it, as it works well.

leroydouglas is correct, DO NOT install Norton or any other commercial anti virus software.  They all work very poorly with Macs.  If you insist on AV software, consider Sophos, it is free.

  • Norton Antivirus and Mac Book Pro

I receive the same error message every time I start up my Mac Book Pro. That Norton antivirus needs to be reinstalled. I have done this several times and have gotten the latest updates but still get the same message. Is it a compatibilty problem with the intel chip?

    dralacar,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
According to MacFixIt: Symantec has now told MacFixIt that they are working on a fix which should be available shortly.
    A company representative told us:
"We wanted to give you a heads up that Apple’s recent batch of security updates caused some issues to LiveUpdate on Intel Macs. We are working on a fix right now."

  • Mac OS 10.5.7 and Norton Antivirus 11.0.2 conflicts?

Since downloading 10.5.7 Norton antivirus does not auto-protect when external drives are attached and console notes "exited abnormally, abort trap". Files were sent to the library "crash report" log. I tried de-installing the anti-virus software and re-installing to no avail. Any known issues? Advice welcomed. Thanks.
    Hope

    Hi hschr;
You asked any known issues with Norton. I would say if you had done a search you would have found that it is a foregone conclusion that it is more of a problem then a solution. It is known to take far more resources and impact performance much more then is called for by any tool.
There is no need for a virus tool on Mac OS X. If you feel you need to install one any way then I highly recommend a free one such as ClamXav instead of Norton.

  • Norton AntiVirus 11, Time Machine, and Time Capsule

When Time Machine starts Norton AntiVirus begins a scan of all 700k+ files on my Time Capsule. I cancel the scan but wonder if I am doing the right thing?

Hi gumsie, I can include much more than a line about being vigilant.
While there are no known viruses that attack Mac OS X at the present time, it is possible for spyware to get onto your Mac.
So I go to lenghts to protect my user. A hosed system can be replaced but a compromised user folder is compromised forever. Along with all your important data like bank records, credit cards, ... I.e. your "identity" stolen.
The best way to avoid that is by using your built-in firewall which is industrial strength and/or a hard wired router, downloading only from "trusted" sites, installing all security updates and being careful about what you give administrative power to. It is also recommended to run day to day tasks from a non-admin account.
Don't use Limewire or any other P2P service to download your software, get it from reputable sources. In addition, always keep at least your users backed up, preferably a clone of your entire system on a separate disk. And put your sensitive passwords, bank accounts, credit card numbers in a "secure note" in a new keychain or in an encrypted folder.
If and when a Mac virus does appear it will be headline news and you can download the AV software then. If you feel you have to run an AV program I'd suggest ClamXav a mac friendly freeware app that is very stable with Tiger. It will check for known virus signatures at any rate.
    Hope this allays your fears;-)

  • Norton antivirus and cached email

Norton keeps telling one of our teachers that she has a virus in her Mail cache. She closes the norton box and it keeps popping up , over and over. She has deleted emails, emptied the trash nothing helped. Does she need to delete some preference file in her library?
She is running os 10.4 and Apple Mail.

I just had a similar situation come up myself yesterday.
I too had Norton Antivirus identify several messages in my IMAP folder that contained infected attachments. I dutifully waded through several mailboxes vi Mail.app to delete messages containing any suspicious attachments.
The scan just ran again last night and still found the same number of infected messages. I looked harder at the paths:
    /Tiger/Users/dalel/Library/Mail/IMAP-dalel@<my-email-addy>/INBOX.imapmbox/Cached Messages/
The folder CachedMessages was used in Panther, but when my mail was imported in Mail 2.x the messages are now cached in the folder "Messages". This legacy folder is kept around for backwards compatibility (as mentioned here previously) but is no longer updated.
I removed several dozen CachedMessages folders from my ~/Library/Mail/IMAP-* folders, and am now virus free.
So even though your teacher may have cleaned out their mailboxes via Mail, the same corrupted files could still be present in the alternate cache folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does norton antivirus keep telling me that an attack attempt hss been and it points to firefox.exe?

I keep getting messages from norton antivirus that an attempted attack has occurred and it points to firefox.exe

    Hi there Amiliz1313,
I seems like you may have already done a few of these steps, but I would recommend going over some from the article below.
Apple ID: "This Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons" alert appears
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2446
If you continue to have issues with your Apple ID, please refer to the "Additional Information" section at the end of the article.
    Hope that helps,

  • Rosetta and Norton Antivirus

I wanted to install Norton AntiVirus software on my MAC last night because I work in a mixed environment and don't want to risk getting some crap on my MAC. I plan on installing Parallels to run Windows. Anyway, when I went to install it I was informed by Symantec that I need to load something called Rosetta for their software to install. I attempted to load Rosetta from my MAC OS disc and got an error message basically stating that it could not load it because I had a newer OS version than what is on the disc. I'm running 10.6.3 and the most current is 10.6.4. So I try to download and install 10.6.4 from Apple and I have failed repeatedly to download the 900+ MB file. I'm using a hardwire connection from Roadrunner. I get to just under 800mb and it chokes. What is the best way to get around this?
Personally, I think it is absurd to expect anyone to download a file that freaking huge. There has to be a way to chunk up this download. Any ideas are welcome!

I echo what has already been said (and thanks for the plug, Richard), but to answer the specific issue of installing Rosetta, I would bet that you already have it installed, which is why you're having trouble installing it from the Mac OS X install disk. Look through your Applications folder, and do File -> Get Info on any old apps. If any of the apps you know run just fine say "Kind: Application (PowerPC)", you've already got Rosetta installed.

LOL, that's life these days. If you're on a slow connection, or one with limits on downloads, you can try a public wireless connection somewhere - like a library - instead.

  • I uninstalled the norton antivirus when setting up my new computer and now it takes forever to start

    Can someone help me?
I uninstalled the Norton Antivirus that comes preloaded on a new pc.  I use Microsoft Security Essentials instead.
I want to know what could have happened in the uninstall.
Also, I really would like to talk to a tech person.

Hello leannej926, When you first got your new HP system, you would have needed to activate the Norton Anti-Virus program. This would have required you to set up a Symantec account. Symantec would have the product serial number for your copy of the Norton Anti-Virus program.
If the subscription has not expired, you can go to the Symantec web site and initiate a Chat session, and explain what happened and the Symantec Support representative can resolve this issue for you very easily.
Before you reinstall Norton Anti-Virus, you will likely need to uninstall any other Anti-Virus program, since another program may be seen be Norton as a virus itself.
Here  is the link to Symantec. Look at the left side of the screen for the Chat Tab.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.
Please mark Accept As Solution if it solves your problem.

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
First, save any work such as draft email messages. Then:
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Clear your Yahoo cookies and then try reloading the page. You probably will need to log in again.
    Does that help?

  • I was surfing the web and got tricked into downloading MacProtector.  It says my system is infected!!  Of course they want almost $80 to register the copy that is on my laptop.  Is this a good product??  Should I get something else, like Norton antivirus?

Yes, turning off Javascript works, but turning it on and off is a pain if one has to make a trip to the preferences.
Why many recommend the NoScript Add-on as one can drag a "allow" button to Firefox's toolbar and turn on scripts on a site per site, case per case basis.
NoScript also protects against other web nasties, like Clear click jacking and zillions of other web based trickery.
    http://noscript.net/changelog
Apple Support Forums works fine without Javascript running, I do it all the time, it also supports HTTPS encrpytion too.
It might be that I'm not seeing a lot with Javascript and other things turned off, but the post box functions etc. work just fine.
Maybe Apple is heading towards no scripts running on all their products?
First Flash gets the axe, then Java is coming next and perhaps finally Javascript? hmmmm?
    Smart move possibly.
Nope it's the same with it on or off.
