Norton AntiVirus Problem

Although I know Macs are supposedly immune from viruses, I wanted to be safe just in case and get Norton's AntiVirus for Mac. But now, when I try to update the virus definitions, it says there is an error and it cannot update the definitions. Any ideas why? I rebooted by computer and it is still doing the same thing again.

  • 10.4.8 update and Norton AntiVirus Problem

Since installing the OS Update I'm getting an error mesage from Nortons Antivirus saying there is an error in updating. Unistalled and reinstalled a few times, Nortons suggested JAva was the culprit and so I reinstalled but no luck. Anyone know what the problem is?

    Malcom,
    That's simply not true, eh.
From Symantec (official, not an employee blog) under 2005-2006 Version:
"Norton AntiVirus 10.1 for Macintosh is currently the latest version available and is compatible with PowerPC and Intel-based Macintosh computers with Mac OS X 10.3.x to 10.4.7."
Looks like Symantec might have to put out an update soon.

  • Problems with Norton antivirus after Tiger install

I installed Tiger yesterday and it all went well. After the install however, on every restart or when turning on the computer I get this error message:
Norton AntiVirus Error. Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect could not continue. Please reinstall Norton AntiVirus and restart.
Of course, I did the reinstall for Norton but continue to get the error message. Any assistance is appreciated.

There's no question that the exploit is serious, but it is a very narrow exploit, only involves specially-crafted RAR files, and there's both a completely adequate workaround and a virus definition to flag potentially compromised RAR files.
Given that, there's no reason to uninstall NAV: simply implement the workaround, download the latest virus defs, and stay away from RAR files for a bit. I expect we'll see a patch shortly.
The hysteria that this problem has generated from some, as well as some of the responses — uninstall NAV, throw out NAV, etc. — is wholly unfounded given the workaround and available virus def.
There have been Mac OS X exploits announced for which an Apple-provide fix took a couple of days to publish. Given the response to this Symantec issue, I'm surprised some didn't advocate uninstalling Mac OS X at those times.
As you point out, there are those who exchange documents with Windows systems, employ macro-enabled documents, etc. Uninstalling NAV vs. using the available workaround opens them up to a wider range of threats. Doing so simply makes no sense — i.e. is "nonsense" in the dictionary definition sense of that word — given that the available workaround and virus definition address the RAR exploit until a patch is published. That's not disparaging: that's fact.
Why waste the time or expose one's self to other potential threats when the workaround and virus def are available and the patch is forthcoming? Uninstalling NAV vs. using the available workaround and virus definition is "throwing out the baby with the bath water."
The Symantec-bashing that has transpired in a variety of threads since this problem arose is also unwarranted. NAV is a good product. I've used it for years and recommend it. I have no financial relationship with Symantec: I simply like the product, use it, and I recommend what I use.
ClamXav and the underlying ClamAV engine are also good products and I recommend ClamXav for those who can't afford NAV or prefer an open source product. But the ClamAV engine has also had similar exploits found in its code, so it also has an imperfect track record.
As software complexity increases, finding all of the potential exploits in the design or testing phase is increasingly difficult. All software installations are a matter of trust as to if the developers did the best job they could to ensure a product free of defects, including security exposures.
    Good luck!

  • Mount scan problems with Norton AntiVirus 10.1

Autoscan freezes when I mount iPod in dock, connected to my iMac via a firewire connection. Autoscan will not respond to eject or cancel scan. When I eject the iPod in iTunes, the iPod screen continues to read "Do Not Disconnect".
    Any similar experiences of solutions?

Open Norton Antivirus prefs and turn off scanning of the iPod.

  • Norton Antivirus and Mac Book Pro

I receive the same error message every time I start up my Mac Book Pro. That Norton antivirus needs to be reinstalled. I have done this several times and have gotten the latest updates but still get the same message. Is it a compatibilty problem with the intel chip?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
According to MacFixIt: Symantec has now told MacFixIt that they are working on a fix which should be available shortly.
    A company representative told us:
"We wanted to give you a heads up that Apple’s recent batch of security updates caused some issues to LiveUpdate on Intel Macs. We are working on a fix right now."

  • Norton Antivirus screwed up settings-Any Help?

    Hi all,
I finally figured out what is messing with my settings in my ibook G4. It has Norton Antivirus on it. I bought it used and the first owner had put it on there. The problem is whenever I try to view a picture or secondary part of a web page, it won't display. Example, if I go to a page and click on a picture that is supposed to show you a bigger image or details, it won't display. It doesn't really matter what type of format it is, Norton is stopping it. I tried to turn off the Norton thing, but it won't turn off. Does anybody have any idea how to neuter this Norton program from my ibook G4 (10.3.9) PowerPC 1.07gb chip. I am leary of upgrading the OS to Tiger until I tame this Norton thing. Then I will upgrade. I already have the disks.

    Hello thomjw,
I have been in a similar situation, not fun. The reason I am part of this community, came to find some info regarding the funky behaviour of my system, & found out the culprit was Norton Antivirus fo Mac version 9.0.
You will need an uninstaller to do it right, go the the Norton Symantec site to look for one . It was updated, the one bundled with certain versions does not work. I am not sure if you will need the CD to do it, however Just pulling the application to the trash does not do it. Make sure it is for the version of Norton that you have. This would of been best posted in the forum:

  • Mac OS 10.5.7 and Norton Antivirus 11.0.2 conflicts?

Since downloading 10.5.7 Norton antivirus does not auto-protect when external drives are attached and console notes "exited abnormally, abort trap". Files were sent to the library "crash report" log. I tried de-installing the anti-virus software and re-installing to no avail. Any known issues? Advice welcomed. Thanks.
    Hope

    Hi hschr;
You asked any known issues with Norton. I would say if you had done a search you would have found that it is a foregone conclusion that it is more of a problem then a solution. It is known to take far more resources and impact performance much more then is called for by any tool.
There is no need for a virus tool on Mac OS X. If you feel you need to install one any way then I highly recommend a free one such as ClamXav instead of Norton.

  • Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect: Removal Inquiry

    Hello,
I have uninstalled _Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect_ from my MacBook and I still get an Error Message every time I turn on my computer. I have downloaded the _Symantec Uninstaller_ hoping to solve this problem but it cannot find any Norton applications to uninstall. I have also check my preferences under Accounts and I do not have Norton to start up when I log in.
Is there something I am doing wrong, or its just some file in disguise somewhere hidden in the library? Please help.
Oh... Just for the record, this problem occurred when I Migrated Norton from my old PowerBook G4 to my Macbook. The PowerBook was running on Tiger.
The message on the Error Message says *"Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect could not continue. Please reinstall Norton ANtiVirus and restart."*
    Thanks in Advance!

Unfortunately, since I have migrated it from my old PowerBook, I do not have the CD or the manuals anymore.
Still hoping this can be resoled thought.

  • Norton AntiVirus on MacBook?

I previously had a MacBook Pro for a few days and had installed Norton AntiVirus on it with no problems. But when I switched over to the MacBook, installing and using Norton was a nightmare (almost as bad as not being able to sync with Bluetooth). I installed and reinstalled about 20 times and receive the same error: "Norton AntiVvirus Auto Protect could not continue. Please run LiveUpdate or reinstall & restart. Code:10."
Not only that, but when I try to open Norton AntiVirus (or any part of it such as Preferences), I get this error: "Norton AntiVirus quit unexpectedly."
I don't know why it ran on my MacBook Pro with no problems but it's not on the MacBook. Anyone else have this problem?

I would also like to hear any ideas to JennC's original post. I am helping a friend with a MacBook with similar problems. LiveUpdate and Norton AntiVirus crash on launch. I've tried repairing permissions, verifying the disk, reinstalling, etc.
-- Here is what I don't want to hear from you all: --
    "Don't install Norton!"
I agree with you, but sorry, but my friend is going to a school where they require that it be installed. Not installing it is not an option. I need to hear ideas that will make it work. I am extremely familiar with most Mac troubleshooting as I used my first Mac in 1985.
My friend has already been through some troubleshooting with the school IT but it didn't seem to help. My next step will be to clone the entire MacBook drive to a backup drive so I can reinstall OS X to see if Norton works better on a true virgin OS. But I sure would like to hear if there's a simple solution, first.

  • Norton Antivirus 10 worth it?

A friend of mine has offered to lend me a copy of his Norton AntiVirus version 10. My question is, is it worth it? i owned version 9 on my previous 12" PB and it was even a nightmare keeping it at arms lenght but i'm thinking maybe they improved version 10 any ideas?

This fall, Macworld did a review of Norton Antivirus 10, and gave it pretty good marks. They had previously reviewed Norton 9, and given it lower marks.
FWIW, I use ClamXAv, which is free, but requests a donation (which I did). I have it do a weekly scan, and so far it's only found problems in my mail, ie, Windows virus and phishing. I would recommend it, as it works well.

  • Norton Antivirus disabling ethernet on T42

Twice I have attempted to upgrade Norton Antivirus to version 2008.  On each atttempt, during the install Norton is disabling (removing) the ethernet adapters.  (Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile).  Has anyone else experienced this?  What are the steps to prevent this from happening?

    Welcome to the forum!
Something similar has happened to me a couple of years ago with an earlier version of Norton. I can't walk you through resolving the problem, but my resolution was to un-install it and replace it with a different anti-virus program.
    Good luck.

  • Norton Antivirus 2006

When I hook up my wireless router (Model WRT54GS) my Norton Antivirus (2006) gives me repeated Worm Warnings and will block the router. I tried to configure rules for the router but nothing seems to work unless I stop the Worm detection or take outthe router....
    Any ideas?

I have been using Norton 2006 wired and wirelessly, without that problem.
Does Norton indicate that it is blocking a worm, or that it has found a worm on your computer?
If Norton indicates that it is blocking a worm, perhaps another computer (or other device) on your network is infected with a worm.  Turn off all other network devices (computers, printers, PDA, etc.).  Are you still getting the worm warnings?  If so, perhaps it is coming from your Internet connection.  Have you turned off some of your router's protection, for example, have you enabled DMZ, or disabled firewall, or do you accept anonymous WAN requests?  If so, turn your protection back on and see if that corrects your problem.
If Norton is indicating that it has found a worm on your computer, then pay attention to the warning.  Worms can spread in many ways, including email, IM, and sometimes just by doing nothing other than being connected to a network, such as the Internet or your home network.  If Norton indicates that your computer is infected with a worm, disconnect the computer from your network until you have cleaned the computer.  Also, check all your other computers for viruses and worms, even the ones that are not complaining.
What kind of rules have you added to your router?

  • Norton Antivirus = A Virus Itself?

My laptop, aquired nearly three months ago, came with a free trial of Norton Antivirus. Nice enough, one might think. Over the course of time, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and Windows Live Messanger. A month or so ago, the trial ended, and Norton was just asking me to buy it. Earlier today, I decided to do a little program cleaning, where I uninstalled Norton, its updater, etc. When I rebooted my computer, Firefox and the Messanger stopped working! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling those two programs, but they still don't work. Obviously, Internat Explorer is still running fine. Help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I run into this problem quite a bit at work, typically, even if you have run the Norton Uninstall feature, it doesnt clean out the registries, like the poster above said. Instead of restoring your computer, you might try getting on a second computer with access to the internet, and go to Symantecs website, and searching for the 'Norton Removal Tool'. This completely cleans out any data left behid by the Uninstall program. I have seen this work about 3/5 times, so it would be worth a shot before restoring especially since it takes about 4 minutes to do. Good Luck!

  • Why won't Norton AntiVirus 10.0 install on my PowerBook G4?

I have a PowerBook G4 and have installed OSX 10.4.7 for PPC. I am now attempting to install Norton AntiVirus 10.0. The error message I get is: "...Software requires Mac OS X BSD Package." My PowerBook G4 does not have an Intel process (pre-Intel). I cannot figure out why it won't let me install the software. I don't even really know what a "BSD Package" is, or how to get it. However, I don't think I need it since it relates to Unix.
    ANY ASSISTANCE?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, hawaiimele.
    1. You wrote: "... have installed OSX 10.4.7 for PPC..."Have you:(a) Just upgraded to Tiger from Panther or Jaguar? Or...
    (b) Were you running 10.4.6 and installed the 10.4.7 update?Which is it?
With Tiger, the BSD Subsystem is installed by default. In previous versions of Mac OS X, it could be omitted from the installation process by deselecting it in a Custom Install.
    2. As a general checkup, I suggest you run the Procedure outlined in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. I suggest this as directory corruption may make it appear that the BSD Subsystem is missing.
    3. Does your Mac meet all the system requirements for installing NAV 10, in particular the RAM and free disk space requirements?
    4. As FYI, I've been running NAV 10 for Tiger since it was released without problems. The "advice" you've received against this product is nonsense. See my "Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware" FAQ for my recommendations as well as a list of some recent Mac OS X security threats that have emerged, including Trojans, rootkits, and spyware. The FAQ also addresses some of the usual arguments against installing an anti-virus solution that often arise in discussions of this topic.
While some people believe that anti-virus solutions are not required on a Mac, I think they're ignoring the fact that threats are emerging and that security exposures continue to be found, albeit eventually closed, in Mac OS X, as in any other operating system. Even Apple now recommends that one should "check for viruses."
    Good luck!
