Norton antivirus

I use XP and lately my PC shuts down by itself. This always
happens when Norton AV is in active mode (running scan, LiveUpdate, etc. and
online or offline) but once or twice has occurred when non-active (such as
sending long email attachment). The first time this occurred was whilst Norton
was performing its automatic weekly full scan. I finally managed to stabilize
the PC by getting it to finish the full scan. It worked fine for a week but
then when the next automatic full scan started running it shut down the
computer again and once more I stabilized it by managing to finish the full
scan. The next week it cut out on full scan again and this time I have not been
able to run the entire full scan without it shutting down. Now any Norton tool
on long enough (mainly 30 mins. but sometimes as short as 2 min.), will shut
down the PC. If I don’t use the Tools then normally the computer stays on but
Norton isn’t fully armed (no full scan).
I’ve been in touch with Norton tech for several weeks (since
the outset) and have removed and reloaded Norton (including all registry items),
amongst other things but to no effect. I suggested to them it could be a timing
out or overload issue but they never related to this. I’m 90% sure that if I
remove Norton and replace it with something else the problem will go away but
before I do so I thought I’d get advice from this board.

It could well be a hardware issue, for example during heavy disk activity the power supply is under higher load. Turn off Norton and do a defrag. Same problem?
Could be a bad power supply. Do you have a spare that you could swap in for testing?
Another possibility is overheating. Open the PC and use compressed air to clean out the CPU heatsink and all the vent holes on the chassis. Are all the fans spinning (case, cpu, powersupply)?
How old is the computer? Could also be the motherboard, e.g. a voltage regulator.

leroydouglas is correct, DO NOT install Norton or any other commercial anti virus software.  They all work very poorly with Macs.  If you insist on AV software, consider Sophos, it is free.
If you do wish to update your OSX, here are the available options:

  • After installing Norton Antivirus to my PC, iTunes won't connect

A few months ago, after getting a nasty virus, I had Norton Antivirus installed on my PC.  Since then, my iTunes won't connect to the store.  This wasn't a huge deal until I got an iPhone, now it's a constant issue.  Has anyone had a similar issue or know what in the world to turn off/on to make it work again?

What iPad117 is describing is recovery mode. this will need a restore in itunes to be able to use the device again, clearing all data. If you want to avoid this, try this first: Try a different usb port. A lot of ports are not compatable with some iPads. One in the back of the computer is usually best. Also try a different cable, and make sure itunes is up to date.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
According to MacFixIt: Symantec has now told MacFixIt that they are working on a fix which should be available shortly.
    A company representative told us:
"We wanted to give you a heads up that Apple’s recent batch of security updates caused some issues to LiveUpdate on Intel Macs. We are working on a fix right now."

How do I remove Norton Antivirus *after* I have installed Lion?
The Norton uninstaller is a PPC native app and Lion won't run it.
    Thanks.

You should run the removal applicaiton that came with your installation. Read this from the Norton web site..https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?product=No rton+for+Mac+Products&version=current&lg=english&ct=united+states&pvid=f-mac&doc id=v64924250_EndUserProfile_en_us/

  • Mount scan problems with Norton AntiVirus 10.1

Autoscan freezes when I mount iPod in dock, connected to my iMac via a firewire connection. Autoscan will not respond to eject or cancel scan. When I eject the iPod in iTunes, the iPod screen continues to read "Do Not Disconnect".
    Any similar experiences of solutions?

Open Norton Antivirus prefs and turn off scanning of the iPod.

Not needed from the App Store. Go straight to the developer.

  • Loading Norton AntiVirus 10.0 in OS 10.4.2

Tried loading my new anti-viurs product, Norton AntiVirus 10.0, and was given an alert on my iBook that I couldn't continue loading due to needing a BSD package in OS 10.4.2.
What is that, and how do I make that happen in my computer?
    Thanks.
    elbowpilot

Apparently, when you installed Tiger, you did a
customized installation, and deselected the BSD.pkg.
To install it, pop in your Tiger install disk,
double-click on the System folder, then Installation,
then Packages, and copy the BSD.pkg to your desktop.
Eject the disk, double-click the BSD.pkg, and install
it. Restart and try installing NAV again.
baltwo, thanks. Appreciate the help. Now can scan for viruses again!

  • Norton antivirus says my licence have expired when switch my computer on for the first time.

I just bought new touchsmart 520-1002 ru (LN649EA). It had norton antivirus preinstalled when i started it for the first time. After few hours of working antivirus informed me that the licence have expired. But before it was like 60 days. What to do? I'm affraid of sirfing the web without antivirus protection. So i'm using iphone. May be i should return it and buy second hand mac?

    Hello Karuser:
Welcome to HP's forum  and your new computer. Nothing to worry about. That was a trial verson. What ever time limit they gave it has expired. I think you miss read it It flashes a reminder all the time. You can still use your computer. Until you purchase or install an anti virus software. The only thing Norton will not do is up date it's self but it will still scan your computer when you open it up and click scan. Try to get anti  virus software. Titanium Maximum 2012, McAfee, and Norton are the top choices to choose from. Try to stay a way from the real cheep ones like Kerpsky that will not protect your computer. My freind installed Kerpsky asked to fix his lap top. Well I did fix it first thing I did was get it on line and run Trend House Call it found over 250 different virus. Some of the worst ones I had to manually removed. Trend House call is a free scan. Trend.com are the one who make Titanium Maximum Security 2012.
You just bought this computer Mac's are great computers but you are very limited to what you can do on them. This one will last you for a very long time ounce we get the bugs out it. My Touchsmart 600-1050 is going strong going into it's third year now. Just had it's frist full recovery done now my computer runs faster and much better then when I first bought it. Yes I had some minor issues fixed on it at first like anything you buy today is not perfect HP covored it all during the one year warranty. My recovery was performed because I picked up a new virus that no anti virus on the market could delete it had to be manually delete it but to much damaged was caused in the operating control software. Otherwise I would be still using Oginal set up.

  • Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac

Scheduled scan using Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Leopard crashes after exactly one minute after it starts. Norton's log says: " Virus 'Did not have permission to scan.'" (Everything on my Intel iMac and Norton is up to date.) The Mac's log file says this:
12/26/07 6:12:30 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.symantec.Sched502-12.plist[225]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 226 PPID 1 scheduledScanner
Norton's support is of no help. They said to exclude compressed files. Same result. Manual scan, by the way, works perfectly, even when including the compressed files. Any ideas (other than the fact that I probably shouldn't be using Norton)??
    Jerry Kirkpatrick

Bottom Line: You don't need virus protection on a Mac.
I have come from the PC world and have dealt with Symantec's products. Norton Antivirus is a virus in and of itself. In the PC world if you try to remove those products, they leave traces of themselves all over the place and the only way to clean up is to remove all traces from the Windows registry. Symantec's products are junk. I always say "Norton Antivirus is a virus in and of itself."
Please don't waste your money. If you can, return the product to wherever you bought it and never think about it again. Macs simply don't need Antivirus software no matter what the so called "security experts" tell you. Security experts that says we need these products for Macs are simply voices for the sellers of these products and, therefore, will tell us anything to get us to buy them.

  • Can Firefox (which apparently has antivirus protection) be used on a computer with a Norton antivirus program already installed?

I've been told I can only have 1 antivirus program on my computer at a time. Since firefox has antivirus capabilities, can I install it on a computer which already has a Norton antivirus program?
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; Trident/4.0; GTB6.5; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; Media Center PC 5.0; .NET CLR 3.5.21022; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; .NET4.0C)

Firefox doesn't include anti-virus protection, you need a separate anti-virus program such as Norton.

  • Norton Antivirus screwed up settings-Any Help?

    Hi all,
I finally figured out what is messing with my settings in my ibook G4. It has Norton Antivirus on it. I bought it used and the first owner had put it on there. The problem is whenever I try to view a picture or secondary part of a web page, it won't display. Example, if I go to a page and click on a picture that is supposed to show you a bigger image or details, it won't display. It doesn't really matter what type of format it is, Norton is stopping it. I tried to turn off the Norton thing, but it won't turn off. Does anybody have any idea how to neuter this Norton program from my ibook G4 (10.3.9) PowerPC 1.07gb chip. I am leary of upgrading the OS to Tiger until I tame this Norton thing. Then I will upgrade. I already have the disks.

    Hello thomjw,
I have been in a similar situation, not fun. The reason I am part of this community, came to find some info regarding the funky behaviour of my system, & found out the culprit was Norton Antivirus fo Mac version 9.0.
You will need an uninstaller to do it right, go the the Norton Symantec site to look for one . It was updated, the one bundled with certain versions does not work. I am not sure if you will need the CD to do it, however Just pulling the application to the trash does not do it. Make sure it is for the version of Norton that you have. This would of been best posted in the forum:
