Norton Problems

Hi,
I recently migrated all my files, apps, etc from an older iMac (G4) to a less older iMac (G5). I had Norton Systemworks (utilities and antivirus) on the older iMac and it came over as well. Since the application is outdated, I wanted to get rid of it, so I simply dragged the norton folders from the applications folder and trashed it. Now, I keep getting this warning sign every time I turn on the machine, saying there is a problem with Norton and I need to reinstall it. ... Is there a way for me to simply just get rid of Norton altogether? I'm guessing there are some components hiding somewhere in the hard drive.
thanks for your help.

To remove any Norton Product requires using the uninstaller for the product.

  • ITunes latest version/norton problem?

Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it? I downloaded an installed the latest version of iTunes and everything on my computer still works fine, except now for Norton Systemworks 2005. Systemworks will no longer open and I cannot run it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, didn't work. I tried doing a few system restores, but now this is screwed up, saying that it cannot restore my computer to an earlier time because there have been no changes to my system, even though there have been changes. I've tried going to the symantec website to solve the problem, but my internet seems to work for every single webpage except for symantec/norton systemworks webpage.

If you consistently can't open symantecs website and can't run systemworks, I'd guess you have some kind of virus/trojan horse/malware on your computer taking over control. (And no, I don't think it was introduced with iTunes!)
I'd strongly suggest booting off a CD and running a virus scan with up-to-date virus signatures.

  • I updated to 4.0 and Firefox did not port my Norton passwords. Is this a Firefox or Norton problem and is there a fix?

    See question.

I have had the same issues with my Ipad 2 when it was upkdated to 6.0. Since then I have puchased Ipad-retina and iPhone 5. I had my retina 3 times to GENUIS received a replacement and still have disconnects. Crashes etc. My iPhone 5 is now crashing and I need to my Ipad retina back to GENUIS. Constant freezing, resetting etc. I think there is a problem because of the relationship of different hardware involved and I think it will be resolved however I not unlike you and others need to interact with the GENUIS.

  • How do I access Firefox when Norton 360 firewall seems to be blocking access but all links on Norton 360 default to Mozilla page which can't connect?

I'm writing this via a Windows Explorer browser window which should tell you the problem, or at least that I can't connect through Mozilla Firefox.
Mozilla has been my default for years and I've always had Norton, 360 for the last few years. I've been through the traditional update problems with Toolbar/ID Safe and both of those are working fine.
Both were updated to absolute latest version within the last week due to an Update/Restart problem I was having with Windows 8.
There were some periodic problems with initializing the Norton problems which generally led to a Firefox not responding situation.
But I was able to run both quick and complete scans yesterdays and the Norton Autofix tells me no problems with their program/app.
I just downloaded newest Mozilla 25.0.1 last night again as last resort because I can't access Firefox beyond the homepage.
Spotify also told me there appeared to be a firewall blocking access. I also can't access iTunes.
I went to Windows 8 Action Center and it listed Norton 360 as controlling the firewall.
But I went to the allow apps through Windows Firewall tab in System anyway and didn't see any listing for Mozilla or Firefox there (maybe you have a less obvious filename).
My own network connection is working fine, obviously I'm on Explorer and no problems with my other computer.
I'm going to contact Norton to deal with this problem, too.
But my real problem now is that any attempt to contact the Symantec/Norton help/support site is automatically sent through a Firefox page which can't connect.
Right now I can't figure out how to do a tech chat or something to work at it from their end.
So that's why I'm here asking if you've run into this or know any way around it.
Obviously, the quicker a response the better.
    Thanks for your time.
    Ciao 4 now,
    Don Snowden

    Hello J Scher,
I don't know if this answer solves it, but I did contact Norton Support through IE and the tech had me download Firefox again...just like I did the night before on my own. But for the moment, for whatever reason, all those issues have gone away, knock on wood three million times. I can access Norton support pages, I can get on Spotify and I can reach the iTunes store.
I will freely admit to not being a great computer person but I have no idea why my machine did this to me all weekend and why it cleared up now, unless the Norton tech did some behind-the-scenes tweakery. But for now, I'm okay and things are working, knock on wood four million more times (figure I better up the ante).
    Thanks for your help.

  • NORTON ONLINE FAMILY EXTENSION GETTING DISABLED

My norton family safety plug-in is constantly being disabled by other users of the same machine (Windows 7). I would like to ask what can I do to prevent the other users belonging to the user group to not be able to access the Firefox options menu option or change any settings in firefox.

This is a Norton problem not a Firefox problem. You would be best finding a suitable Norton forum to discuss this matter.
I am not sure exactly what Norton product you use but possibly this is related:

  • ITunes and Norton Internet Securities Fix

    I have had the same problems with iTunes as everybody else.Installed fine but will not open.This was due to NIS blocking iTunes(and many other programs) from accessing the internet.This is what I did with the help from symantec;
    1. open nis
    2. Select personal firewall
    3. select configure
    4. select programs from the tabs
    5. select program scan. This will scan your computer for all the programs that require access to the internet.
    6. When the scan is complete look at the list of programs to see if iTunes is there.
    7. If itunes is not on the list select ADD and browse to where iTunes is located on your drive and select the program. The program will be added to the list and will prompt you to configure iTunes access, select permit always.
    8. restart your computer
This worked for me and came from symantec's web site and email help. Good luck

    Michael
B Noir suggested I ask you about my problem.
I completely gave up on 5.0.0 and 5.0.1. They completely crashed my system and had to do a hard reboot. This is what I did first to get some function back:
    Starters:
I have a brand new Sony Vaio Centrino Laptop with 1gig of memory. I am running the Norton Suite, there is a program preloaded on here called SpySubtract, and AOL is often used.
I had the prior version of ITunes running fine, with no problems whatsoever. I then upgraded to 5.0, we all know what a mistake that was. I waited for 5.0.1 and here's what happened.
    FIRST ATTEMPT:
#1) I strictly followed the uninstall instructions B Noir gave me, it was link to a posting by Da Gopha.
#2) I updated/upgraded Norton to make sure I had the most recent version and data.
    #3) I restarted.
#4) I turned off Norton and then I downloaded QT standalone from the Apple site.
    #5) I restarted.
#6) I turned off Norton and then downloaded Itunes 5.0.1.
#7) It opened, it even found my music and everything. Joy abounded. I felt like Jack on the Titanic: I am king of the world. Silly boy I was.
#8) I closed Itunes, turned on Norton and restarted Itunes. I got to the Norton prompt page, said to always allow and then NOTHING. Dead, just nothing happened.
    #9) Restarted, still nothing.
#10) Restarted, turned off Norton, tried to start Itunes, NOTHING happened.
    SO:
#11) Went through all the steps to erase Itunes/Ipod etc. again.
#12) Loaded up the version that came with my disc: Itunes 4.8.31 and the QT from the disc: 6. It worked, again Joy abounds.
#13) Restart, let Norton turn back on. Tried Itunes (4.8.31) and . . . . NOTHING. I check the Norton Config and Itunes is set to allow. Bonjour is still there, don't know why, but it is also set to always allow. This version of this program worked on this machine before all this crazy 5.0 and now 5.0.1 stuff.
#14) My wife went to sleep muttering something about me losing my marbles.
#15) Restart, turn OFF Norton and try Itunes. It starts, my music is there and everything. Joy again. However, very tempered. I can now only run Itunes if, and only if I turn off Norton. I really don't like being on the internet with norton off.
I just don't get it. I don't mind not having the new version of Itunes.
Does 4.8.31 new Bonjour. If I dump Bonjour will it effect 4.8.31 functioning. If not, it may fix things. How do I get rid of Bonjour.
Any ideas why this is happening. I can't upgrade. I can't function properly. I am not as frustrated as before because now I have my music, but this is not the way things are supposed to be.
B Noir then told me to do the Norton Scan and add Itunes to the list. This is what my response was to that suggestion:
I did the NIS scan, Itunes is NOT there on the list. I went to the Itunes directory, selected the program and got a box that said the program already had rules. I went back to the list that is normally populated (not the one that is generated after the scan). Sure enough Itunes is there and it is marked Permit Always (or something like that). I thought maybe it was a setting error. I highlighted Itunes (on the NIS list) and hit modify. Crash. Computer completely frooze up. I hit control-alt-delete, could get as far as the "do you want to notify MS of the problem" and then it just sat there. Needed to do a hard reboot and now I am back where I am.
Should I delete the NIS entry for Itunes, do a scan and see what happens. Remember, I am now running 4.8.31 and will not upgrade until it looks like this is fixed. Now I am just trying to get the functionality I once had back. What about Bonjour, should I get rid of it. If yes, how do I do that?
B Noir then suggested I contact you for help because you had figured out the Norton problem interplay.
    PLEASE HELP.
    Thank you,
    David

  • Need to disable Norton before access to Internet permitted

    Hey there,
I am trying to add a HP dv6000 to my wireless network and when trying to just give it access thru my AP wirelessly I dont have access unless I actually disable NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2007 (even when wired to AP).  After disabling it I have access to Internet, even if i reenable NORTON INTERNET SECURITY I still have good access untill I reboot.
As this is not my computer this method of access to the internet is not feasible and just plain annoying.  I have permited Internet Explorer (all that is on this comp atm) in the personal firewall and still I have to disable to access Internet.
Any help on how to resolve this would be much appreciated as I'm banging my head on the wall now.
    There is a broadcom 802.11 b/g wlan adapter in here connecting to WRT54GS V.4 w/ upgraded f/w.
    Thanks in advanced.

This is a norton problem. You should ask the norton support for help. I think there was something similar here a few days ago where someone had to allow traffic for the protocol driver in his software firewall to get connected.
Regarding your problem: you are not totally clear whether or not you are able to connect to your wireless network or not. Is the problem that you have a connection established with your router (i.e. the laptop gets its IP address from the router) and you are unable to access the internet then or is the problem that you actually cannot connect to the wireless network at all unless you turn off the firewall?
Are you using wireless security (WPA2, WPA, WEP)? Which one?

  • NIS Problems

I can only open iTunes 6 when I disable Norton Internet Security. When I select "Permit All" for Apple iTunes under the firewall section, NIS freezes up every time. Is there anything I can do to prevent this interference?

    hi y'all!
every day i hope that someone will post with a technique that works for the "freezing Norton" variations of this NIS 2005 nastiness.
we get periodic scattered reports that people can get past their savage Norton problems by uninstalling and then "splitting out" the QT 7 and itunes installs. Cam gives a procedure here that worked for him:
Cameron Leese, "An iTunes 5.01 Success Story", 08:03am Oct 5, 2005 CDT
... one other thing that i don't think anyone has tried yet (or at least has not reported back about) with a "freezing Norton" is uninstalling itunes, uninstalling
    b Norton,
reinstalling itunes and reinstalling Norton. (that's a blue sky treatment possibility with no guarantee of success which would be a pain to have to do.)

  • Norton 360 will not let me install thunderbird, How do I fix this?

When thunderbird starts to install Norton does a can of the installation and rejects the program automatically.

Sounds like a Norton problem not Thunderbird bird.

  • Try permanently disabling Norton Intenet Security!

    Hi all,
I too have been frustrated since my upgrade to the new iTunes. I found that Norton Internet Security is what is interferring with installation [and running!] of iTunes!
For those of you with Norton Internet Security, you might be able to get iTunes running simply by disabling Norton before running iTunes.
If you don't have Norton Internet Security and you're having problems with iTunes, I guess this won't help, sorry!
Here is what I did to re-install iTunes and get it working. I can't promise this will work for you, but it worked for me.
Uninstall iTunes and QuickTime. There are many suggestions for what to do if uninstall doesn't work. I suggest disabling Norton, then try uninstalling (just in case; I had no trouble with uninstalls).
Here are the instructions from CoJeff as swiped from one of Rachyl's posts:
    -- start CoJeff instructions --
    1) Try and use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall itunes & QT. Reboot each time you uninstall an application.
2)Open Windows exploder and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\
    3) You should see a bunch of folders looking like, {ED9C4B62-65C7-415D-B6EC-C250B60CD0CD}
    4) For each of the folders that contain itunes.msi delete it. PLEASE be careful only to delete the folder containing itunes.msi (there could be more than one).
    5) If by chance the Add/Remove won't uninstall an application listed. I want you to download and install the MSI cleanup utility. Located here....
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
    6) I also want you to delete the following folders c:\program files\itunes & c:\program files\quicktime
    7) Download and unpack a Registry cleaner. I like to use a certain one and never had any trouble with it. The download page says XP isn't supported but it won't hurt your pc. I've used it for years and not one problem. It will create a reg file of anything it removes.
    http://www.download.com/3000-2094-881470.html
    8) Reboot your PC after running the regcleaner.
    -- end CoJeff's instructions --
Note I didn't run a registry cleaner, but it probably isn't a bad idea. This next batch of stuff came from several of the pages with instructions I found in my travels looking for help. Some of the deletions are probably not needed, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible.
Delete all these folders, if they exist:
    C:\Program Files\iTunes
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime
    C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime
For each user, delete the folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\QuickTime
Note that <user> includes not only All Users, but Default User, if the folders exist.
Also, delete the contents of each user's Temp folder: Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp, Edit->Select All, Delete.
Note that the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976 say to delete the Temp folder, but I could not get the installation to do anything without it. I only realized this after following some cleanup instructions at http://consumer.installshield.com/faq.asp#ts. But if you delete[d] the Temp folder, don't worry, just create a new one.
At this point, I recommend running anti-malware & anti-spyware programs (Spybot, Ewido, and/or others).
Be sure to turn off all security programs! Install iTunes and Quicktime. It doesn't tell you to reboot after it's done, but I think that's not a bad idea.
Now, just make sure that Norton Internet Security is disabled before you run iTunes. I can run iTunes with Norton anti-virus enabled, but not with Internet Security.
    Good Luck!
    Diane

Well, I thought that Rachyl's changes to configure Norton would solve the problem, but they didn't work. I was unable to remove anything from the list of programs - it just hung up; requiring a forced shutdown holding down the power key.
So I tried just adding the 3 programs related to QuickTime, since the two iTunes programs were already in the list. After adding them, and rebooting, I still cannot run iTunes when Norton Internet Security is enabled.
I have the same problem with MS Word. I have been unable to open Word documents for 3 or 4 weeks (system hangs with only splash screen showing). But I haven't needed to use it since then, and with the holidays and stuff I forgot about it. Today I confirmed that the problem still exists, and that I have no problems opening Word documents when Norton Internet Security is disabled.
So Symantec has some explaining to do!
Thanks to all who help out on these boards - especially Rachyl!
Now that I know the problem (at least the problem I have) is a Norton problem, I'll be pestering them.
    Diane

  • Missing Adobe Reader files

I had the same problems with Adobe Reader. When I I used the Norton SystemWorks program to find and fix problems on my computer, it said the license was no good, and that I was missing file "msvcp80.dll. Well, I used an expensive expert to put this file into my computer. I also used the program "BEYOND ADOBE READER". This got the Adobe Reader on my computer and elimated the license problem. However, when I check for errors now, it said you are missing file "msvcr80.dll". I am beginning to think that this is a lost cause! Does anyone know the solution to this next problem without going to an expensive expert again?

    > I had the same problems with Adobe Reader.
Reading your post sounds (to me) like a Norton problem. Please describe exactly what is happening.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 now exits after loading

After using premiere pro cs3 for quite a while, all of a sudden it exits after loading. I'm not sure if this is an Adobe problem or a Norton problem or a machine problem. It happened after a power failure, and while I was running premiere at the time, my power backup let me close the file and shut down premiere before it too died.
The computer is working fine with all other programs, including Encore & Photoshop. I just can't run Premiere. The other strange thing is that I can no longer access the Adobe site from that computer. The site starts to load then hangs forever.
I tried re-installing Premiere, no-luck. Then I downloaded the last update to CS3 (on another machine because the Premiere machine won't connect to the site) and tried to install it. No dice. The install hangs forever with "installing" on the screen.
I thought maybe there was an "installer" or "updater" problem, but can't figure it out.
    Anybody have any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Brad Tyrrell

    Hunt,
Thanks for the reply.   I'll try that too.
A suggestion I got over at the DV board was to create a new admin account in XP and try opening premiere under that.   That worked!   Unfortunately, since I created my projects under the old admin file, I don't have access to them under the new one.   I'm copying files to a different folder at this point, but I know Premiere doesn't like that.
If deleting the preference file works, it'd be a lot simpler.
    Thanks.
    Brad
By-the-way,  how did you get your screen name to not be your email address?   I can't seem to do it.   I went into my account and changed things, but the forum seems to insist that my screen name is my ID which seems to have to be my email address.

  • Unable to run iTunes  store on 64 bit Windows 7, only loads half way.

But when I run it I get to half way on the top bar for the store and no further.
Therefore I cannot access the store.
Norton 360 say it is an iTunes problem and Apple say it is a Norton problem.
