Norton Utilities Tiger update

hi. i have this common problem with uninstalling Norton Utilities entirely. Every time I update my Tiger a Norton Utilities window appears when restarting my computer. You probably know this:
http://homepage.mac.com/pniklas/PhotoAlbum35.html
I've searched topics here. There is a nice hint here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=741264&#741264
User macjack says to delete invisible norton files from my hard drive via Cocktail. I did that, but still this norton utilities window reappears when I log out and then log in. I have searched for "symantec" and "norton" files via Spotlight and Activity Monitor There is nothing left.
I have found this file on my hard drive called: .symSchedScanLockxz
I am not certain if I can delete it but it looks that way. Can you assure me it's ok to get rid of it?
Do you know any other files that should be erased manually?
Thanks.
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As you probably already know Norton Utilities is not compatible with OS X 10.4 Tiger. Symantec ceased development of Norton Utilities for Macintosh and Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2 years ago.
Follow Duane's advice. This uninstaller works with Tiger and will find the 30 or so "invisibles" you will never find if you do it manually.
However it may leave behind some files. Depending on which Norton you have installed.
Download and run Cocktail in "Interface" > "Finder" choose to see "invisibles". Or use OnyX.
Look for files like these on the top level of your hard drive:
/Norton FS Volume 2
/NAV Mac 800QS File
/Norton FS Data 808K
/Norton FS Volume
/Norton FS Index
Find those files drag them (not command-delete) to the trash and empty it.
Get TechToolPro or DiskWarrior 3.0.3 if you want to have a good utility on hand.
Good luck.
EDIT: LOL! I didn't see your reference to me at first. So you must have run the uninstaller as well?

  • Can't get rid of $$!!X# Norton Utilities login screen

Ages ago - ages-- I dumped Symantic and Norton Utilities from my work Mac and my laptops. Erased every fine I could find with Norton or Symantec in it. Yet everytime I boot up my mac or laptop, I get a Norton message window (shortly after most of the desktop is loaded) that tells me NORTON UTILITIES HAS DETECTED A CHANGE IN THE OPERATING SYSTEM and some other line about updating my software. Until I hit the OK button, the Mac won't finish loading! NOTE: I have changed macs and laptops since I last had Norton software on either machine. But somehow in the Migration of files from old Mac to new, some secret Norton file has managed to survive the journey. Is there any way to get rid of this? Not sure I can use AppZapper because I have no Norton software on the Macs for AppZapper to work from...........I'd really love to delete this pest! -- david in KC

  • Unable to view Flash content after Norton Utilities scan

I ran a Norton Utilities scan yesterday, and afterwards various websites looked extremely strange in Firefox. Worse, I lost the ability to view embedded videos on such sites as the BBC, YouTube etc.
Further testing this morning shows that the problem isn't with ALL video content. There are SOME YouTube videos that I can view perfectly well, for example. And while I cannot view content in the MLB.com media player, some embedded video on the homepage seems to work fine.
I have updated my Flash plugin to the latest version and the Adobe website tells me it is working correctly. Any ideas what could be causing the problem? Did Norton Utilities delete some file that I actually needed? I have read some forum answers about other problems that suggest I should disable Norton scans with respect to the Firefox folder, and I will do that - but how do I fix the problem it has caused? I have tried a system restore to no avail.
I have Firefox 12 running on a Win7 x64 machine. And by the way, the 'weird-looking websites' problem mentioned above seems to have been fixed by reloading each one in turn.

Before using any of these 'cleaning' programs, I always save my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles (includes cookies, emails etc) using a freebie program MozBackup - mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/.
If your Firefox then gets cleaned out, you can easily recover it. You can also
get back profiles for as far back as you want, as long as you keep all the backups.
    Best wishes. CD

  • Can't get rid of Norton Utilities alert window

I have successfully installed Leopard to my older G4 PowerPC (Mirrored Drive Doors). I trashed an older Norton Utilities (V.8); but I still get a message window shortly after boot up that states "Norton Utilities has detected a new version of Mac OS X. You may need to update your installed Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks components. Consult your system administrator." I've used Spotlight to search the entire hard drive so that I can trash anything related to the Norton program, but no success: each time that I boot up, I get the same message. Other than a minor annoyance (it goes away when I click "OK"), what can I do so that it won't appear in the future?

    Hi stankay-
You definitely want to lose the Norton products.
I believe that if you go to their website you can download an uninstaller program that will remove all of the files.

  • Getting rid of old norton utilities reminders

many versions of MacOS ago I had norton utilities running - I no longer do, but every time I log on I get a message telling me it detects a new version of MACOS and that I should consult my administrator. I want to get rid of all things related to Nortons from my machine, including this last remaining message any suggestions please?

There should be an uninstaller from Norton made to help get rid of
those parts in hidden locations Norton put into the system. And a
few of them may have migrated along as you updated the OS X.
Unless you do an all-new installation from scratch and don't bring
in any of the old user accounts or previous system bits.
You could also get and use a third-party uninstaller to hunt down
Norton parts. Short of a search in the computer using Find, which
may not be good at finding items within the system itself.

Some of the items may be hiding in .plist files, or in support folders
where the apps hide parts within a system. It is better to use an
uninstaller than randomly hope to find the correct bits & trash them.
I've never used a Norton product in OS X (from 10.0 through 10.5.8)
and don't see a need to do so. I did have some Norton utilities in old
OS 9.2.2 and Before. Some were adequate for routine tasks, then.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Annoying Norton Utilities message

The following message keeps coming up when ever I instal an OS update:
Norton Utilities has detected a new version of Mac OSX. You may need to update your installed Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks components.
I used to have Norton software but I removed it a long time ago, but this annoying message keeps coming up. How can I stop it?

Try using EasyFind http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11076/easyfind entering Symontec in the search field and after that enter Norton in the field in case there's some Symontec file or files that go by "Norton".
There's also Find Any File http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/30079/find-any-file, but in my experience EasyFind has always worked for me.
EasyFind is extremely good at finding ALL files of an app that one wants to get rid of.
I've discovered that none of the App deletion applications are totally reliable for locating ALL files of an app that one wants to completely delete, but EasyFind has saved my sanity countless times over the past several years.

  • Why does Norton Utilities fail to run if Firefox 4.0.1 is running on Win XP

    Platform: Windows XP
    Firefox: 4.0.1
After upgrading to 4.0.1, the Norton toolbar was declared incompatible so I no longer have Norton site certification. Today (5/13/2011) I was running Firefox and tried to run Norton Utilities. It would not display the menu. But Task Manager listed it as running as well as Firefox. So I shut Firefox down and killed Norton with the Task Manager. The I clicked on NU and it ran perfectly. I have not tried to run Firefox after loading NU.

Firefox 4 versions and later '''do not run on a PowerPC Mac''' and require at least OS X 10.5 and '''an Intel Mac'''.

  • System password not regognised with install of Tiger update on mac restart

    Hi all,
I have just installed the latest Tiger update and on the machine restarting after installation to complete the install process, a message comes up asking for the password so that the Tiger update can access the system.
When I type in my password, it says it is wrong.
Caps lock is not on and I have tried variations to no avail.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

I must add that this very same password that I am trying still works on software installs and so forth.

  • No more Norton Utilities support in OS 10.4.4?? what now?

Since Symantec isn't supporting Norton Utilities for 10.4.4 any more and I need to defragment my hard drive, are there any suggestions? TechTool Pro? Any experience with that program out there? Any other suggestions? Is there any freeware or shareware available?
Thanks for your input. It is appreciated. G

    Hi Gerhard,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
My guess is because of the problems with Norton over the years with Mac computers. I have never really heard people talk about how great Norton works, it really does more damage then good. You shouldn't have to defragment your hard drive because ever since OS X 10.2, OS X has been equipped with delayed allocation. Delayed allocation makes a number of mall allocations to be combined into a single larger allocation in one stop on the disk. This means that it automatically defragments your "slow-growing" files (called Hot File Adaptive Clustering). I suggest reading the Knowledge Base Document 25668 on disk optimization. Also there is a previous thread that I have found about this subject.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS I believe you have posted this thread in the wrong forum, you might want to post this in Power Mac G5 forum.

  • Norton Utilities Issues? Please help

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but I hope someone can help me. I have been having issues with my ibook so I decided to run Norton Utilities. I know you can't fix the problems unless you boot from the CD. But when I boot from the CD and the emergency launcher comes up only the CD"S show up in the box not any of the drives. What am I doing wrong?

    Alexandria Pieroni wrote:

If you're attempting to use Norton Utilities on a hard drive with OS X installed on it, that would be wrong. Consider yourself lucky that it wouldn't allow you to proceed.
To do hard drive maintenance on a Mac OS X 10.3 volume, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • PANTHER TO Tiger update discs?

Anyone know where I can get some Tiger update discs?
Our G4 needs Tiger and we currently have Panther. Evilbay is a little pricey for them at the moment.
We will Be getting a new G5 in a year or 2 with Leopard....for now I need to upgrade to Tiger any ideas?

    SPCreative,
An Upgrade disc, is a disk that was provided by Apple, to consumers that purchased a new model of Mac, shortly before, or after, a new version of OS X Tiger 10.4.x, was released.
The new Mac would have had the older version Panther 10.3.x, pre-installed when manufactured.
The Upgrade disc Tiger 10.4.x, is Model Specific, for that particular Mac, and will only Update the existing system Panther 10.3.x.
It is not a full version of the OS X.
Therefore, the previous version of OS X, must be present.
The Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, will install Tiger 10.4.x, regardless if a previous version Panther 10.3.x is present.
The discs must look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • I lose toolbar settings whenever Norton Utilities 15 runs a scan

    ''locking as a dupe - https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/778322''
I lose my tool bar settings and window settings and it seems to be related to Norton Utilities running a scan to clean the drive. Primarily my add ons such as morning coffee, FireFTP and print disappear from the tool bars. However bookmarks remain intact. Any ideas how to prevent this. Occurs if I add a tool bar or add them to an existing toolbar.

Thanks for the replies. It's amazing how if you ask a question the answer dawns on you. Sort of a Homer Simpson moment. "DOH!". Dawned on me I could get Norton Utilities to ignore the Firefox browser files when it "cleans files" and instead just let Firefox delete the cache when I exit. Sounds like it'll solve my problem.

  • Need for OS9 is Norton Utilities with enabler

After several moves and reinstalling OS9 on this G3, my OS9 CD is damaged. I need the communities help. Our puppy about a year ago played with the CD and with the tiny teeth marks several things will not install, which I can and have gotten around. NOW I need the Norton Utilities that was on the CD and will not access at all. Since my last clean install a year ago I need the program desperately. The version was 7. Anyone who can send me a copy so I can maintain my computer will be greatly appriciated. As you can imagine, I need to defrag and organize the HD, wipe empty area's. All I have thats useable is Disk Doubler. Please contact me at [email protected] with copy's so I can use. Thank you.

    Hi, keepingmyg3 -
You won't find too many folk in these forums who look kindly on Norton Utilities - I'm not the only one who won't let it on my property.
Also, it would not be legal for anyone to give you a copy of a commercial product which has not been released to the general public as freeware.
Alsoft's utility PlusOptimizer can be purchased for download, then used from a Zip disk or other removable media when the Mac is booted to a CD. In the process of optimizing a drive, it will also defragment the files on it.
    ...my OS9 CD is damaged.
You would do well to replace it. You can often get retail OS 9 Install CD's at sites like these -
