I don't ever use macs and I like the pc setup, I heard that you can add (or maybe it possibly already comes with the notebook) a setting so you can use either the pc or mac programs and regular screen. Also what is the best mac notebook for students....for homework.

despite the woes and tribulations about the macbook, its the best considering the limited budget most students have to work with, such as myself. recently apple's been fixing this problem so you should be fairly safe from the recent debacle.
As for using the PC platform, there are two ways you can use windows. you can either A: use parallels. this is a great way to use windows as a virtual machine on top of your mac os x. the downside to using this is the price. parallels is 80 bucks on top of the price of the windows operating system. the cheaper way is B: using bootcamp. this allows you to boot up in windows and run it natively on a minimum of 5GB for the partition for windows.

I am not a Mac user, but Premiere Pro and other Adobe programs are installed on the Macs used by our freelance artists and editors.

We have video clips of interviews stored on a Mac-formatted external hard drive. Our new editor explained that in order to have authentic time codes, we must transcribe them using Premiere Pro. What is the most efficient way to do so?
In other words, should I open a Word doc, start listening to the interviews and type them? Is there a dictation option within Premiere or a note pad I can type into and save them? I am really baffled.

I think I've figured out that there is no dictation program.
When I open the video clips in Premiere Pro, they will not play. If I can figure out that problem, I wont worry about anything else. Isn't PP, a media player in and of itself? I must not be opening it correctly.

I cannot turn off my computer while useing firefox I have to do a forced shutdown every night and it is frustrating the hell out of me. If I switch and use Explorer I can press shutdown and it shuts down but it won't work with Firefox WHY.

Mac users disconnected from shares on OS 10.3.9 Server

The past few days I have had many (not all) Mac users get disconnected from Apple file shares that they have mounted. They get a message saying the connection to the server was unexpectedly terminated. Oddly, this doesn't happen to everybody using the server at the time. And, some users are only disconnected from a few of the shares they have mounted. We are not having any network issues and I don't see any errors on the server or log files. Is it possible that saving very large files to the server could cause the NIC to get tied up and prompt the disconnect? Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I wanted to update the thread on some new developments. Just a few moments ago, the server affected by this behavior crashed. It kicked everyone off shared volumes, and wouldn't respond via ARD, Server Monitor, or SSH. It just totally took a dump all over itself.
I was able to find the crash in the Apple File Service log in Console, but it looks like it locked up hard before (and during) when it was writing the crash log. Here are the parts I could find:

You can see on that last line there where it started writing the console log as it rebooted.
Hope it helps diagnose the problem. If anything, it's the first time the server was rebooted since about May, so maybe whatever problem it was experiencing is fixed with the reboot.
I promise to report back if things go well, or not.

My friend has a new Vista PC and he's not a skilled user. I'm a Mac person myself. He's having tons of trouble with it and I live 2000 miles away. I'm here on a visit and have been helping him get Flash player and Yahoo IM etc installed.
Is iTunes a simple, painless, installation or does it require troubleshooting? If the latter, then we won't even try. Too little time for anything but install-and-play.
Your advice will be much appreciated.

Our luck will be problems out the wazoo. His PC is brand new and shiny, but working with it is like trying to do eye surgery on yourself without instruments or anesthesia: painful.
Maybe we'll postpone this until I buy him a Macbook later this year.

Thanks for the link. It's downloading the standalone installer now.
Still need someone to chime in if QT will install without problems on the Vista PC. This bit (with my emphasis) from Apple at the download page isn't encouraging.

Normally, you just connect the monitor to the MacBook using a VGA adaptor that you can buy from an Apple Store. Now try System Preferences > Displays > Detect Displays. You should now be able to select a display mode for the monitor. If it still doesn't work, then I'd check that everything is properly connected. I've had problems with colours disappearing due to a faulty connection in the VGA adaptor.

I have accidently deleted safari from my iphone and can't find it to put it back. I did it ages ago as I didn't know what it was and I was trying to create extra space! Now when I click on a link say in an email, it doesn't come up with a browser. I have looked at the apple site but can only see a download for mac users. Not sure if this is the case because it is preinstalled on the iphone.

Mac users DO NOT use this Desktop software! it will cause hours of heartache

I have exactly the same issue with a Bold and have still to find any option to resolve the issue other than to entirely wipe the device and go through the tiresome process of reinstalling and updating everything to the way i had it.
I am utterly furious with myself for trusting RIM to release a desktop option for Mac users. I choose a Blackberry for its push email and i love the device very much, even despite Initially going through 6 Bolds until i received a new one from Vodafone UK that was not reconditioned and finally worked properly. Since then everything has been fine until this amateur attempt at writing software for Mac users.
I don't have a lot of time to myself and i can think of nothing worse than spending the little time i have searching through endless ill concieved solutions that simply do not work. Just by plugging in my Bold and hitting sync has destroyed my contacts, ringtones and other settings. Why bother to release software until it is entirely tested? Why would you want to put your customers through this demorolising procedure which does nothing more than further emphasise your true lack of interest in supporting anything Mac. I dont want an iphone, i believe that your phones aresuperior for business users like myself.
Please, please, if you are a Mac user DO NOT use this software unless you really want to go through hell just trying to get it back to the customised form you spent loving hours to get right. It destroys your address book and other elements and not one solution posted anywhere on the Blackberry web site works. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
The reason i am a Mac users is because i need a reliable hardware/software solution that works out of the box. It is entirely obvious that RIM havent quite realised the long term benefits of this really very simple idea!

I have been able to connect to other Mac users signed onto AIM accounts in iChat, but not Windows users signed onto AIM. Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated, as I am at college and away from all my loved ones, and desperately want to chat with them.

I am sorry that only 2 hours and 15 minutes left you disappointed.
Some things to consider.
1) they have to be on XP.
2) they have to be using AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro
3) if they use AIM 5.9 they have to Tune the Camera and Mic to the Application. See message 570 in that link (Access to these preferences in in the My AIM menu now or use F3)
4) Whichever App they use it has to be Enabled through the XP firewall. IF at Service Pack 2 they need these instructions an earlier version of XP has to have the Firewall disabled.

The ports that iChat uses have to be opened at your end although it sounds like they are.
The port for AIM/Trillian have to opened in their modem at their end.

Trouble with forms not fuctioning for Mac users

I have created a form in LC Designer that works great on PC, but doesn't work on on Mac. Or rather doesn't work on all Mac machines. I have tested the form on two different Mac machines in my office and it seems to work fine. However, those outside the office are not able to save the completed form or allow the user to use the email submit button. Is there something I can do to make this user-friendly for Mac users?

The email button function is the least of the issues. The fonts and type size are altered, parts of the form drop out and the form fields appear to be blank until you click on them. Upon click the information then appears. It's really very odd.
Additionally, they can not save the form to their desktop. I thought that this was me forgetting to enable user rights, but that was not the case. At the moment, Mac users can only print the form and fax it.
