Not a problem, just curious

Hey all... a few times now I have packed up the Apple TV and headed over to a buddy's place to watch some movies. Up until last night, didn't really put much thought into it, but last night it suddenly occurred to me...
I never set the ATV up to work on his network.
As the film drew to a close, I became curious so checked out the network settings: not quite what I was expecting. I had the ATV connected to his Airport network via RJ-45, but according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here, etc...
Hmm, thought I, that could be why the trailers took so long to open up..
So just curious... I was way out of range of my own Airport network: is the ATV able to access Back to My Mac, and connected that way??
Again, not a problem. Just curious.

According to your original post, you mention being out of range of your Airport network, thus I thought that you were using wireless.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by:
"according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here"
How could you tell? If both you and your friend left your routers' using the default 192.168.x.x IP address range (or picked the same IP address range), the network settings would be exactly the same at both places.

  • No problem, just curious abt performance

I'm using Lightroom on a Toshiba Satellite A75 with a P4, 3.2Ghtz CPU with 1.2 gig of RAM running XP Home, and Lightroom runs just fine even when I've got PSE5, ACDSee V8, ACDSee fotoSlate, and occasionally Outlook 2003 running at the same time. Yes, SOME functions do slow down some times, but overall, it isn't significantly slower than any other product that claims to compete with LR. And let's face it, my set up is definitely NOT state of the art at this point.
YET, People with what sound like much more powerful systems complain about LR performance. And people with systems that sound pretty much like mine also complain about performance. But at the same time, other people that fit the above descriptions also feel performance is just fine. It seems there is no consistent pattern regarding performance issues.
What is going on here? It can't be just a perception issue of some people, can it? I'm not known as a particularly patient guy, so I would think I'm very likely to whine about performance if I thought I wasn't getting full performance out of LR.
Why is performance satisfaction/dissatisfaction all over the place?

Virtually every installation has some unique attributes--from software to configuration. Discovering where a conflict or bottleneck takes place is both and art and a science, and it has to be practiced one case at a tiem by individual users in cases where there is such incosnistency as in LR performance speed.
One good thing about trying to find the hangup on your configuration is that you will learn a great deal about computers, especially your own. Yes, that is doing it the hard way in one sense, but in many cases that is all you can do--and in the end you still may not be successful.
If it were me, I'd use Occam's Razor and start by putting it on by itself on a dual boot partition--no internet, no virus checkers, nothing--and then add applications one at a time to find what bogs it down. I have a copy LR on my main boot setup, and separately with CS3, a couple of image utilities, and a DAM, put on one at a time and tested after each new addition.
It runs 30-35% faster in that lean carefully controlled environment. Do I know why it is so much slower in the ebvironment where I have virus, malware, spyware, word processing, accounting, internet and mail, etc, etc, etc applications--not a clue! But, then again, I am not in the slightest surprised that it has been affected by something in that jumble of diverse applications.
No amount of testing by any software team at Adobe or anywhere else would be able to find all the interactive problems that can potentially occur in today's extraordinarily diverse, complex (and rich) computing enviroments--especially on PCs.
I think you will note that the number of issues with LR from the Mac side are far fewer, and the general level of expressed satisfaction much higher. That, however, will not get me to buy a Mac :)
I have a number of serious complaints about LR, but relative speed isn't one of them.

  • Not a problem just cool to think about

Ok so ive been having problems with my computer and i had the computer out in the garage and dad said he wanted to try the 120v converter he had in his truck to see if it would power my computer and monitor so we hooked it up.. ran perfect
it is a very nice system, he wanted to try it out so we would know if i could play whatever during the trip to California   now think about it..
    Im running 7 hard drives the Athlon 64 3200+ the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R, 1Gb of Corsair XMS pc3200, Radeon 9800XT. 1 DVD-rom 1DVD-+RW
we figured out that im only using 185 or so Watts, we could easily run 3 computers while on the trip, btw not taking a truck. taking a camper/ motor home

this isnt one of those cheap walmart brands this is a heavy duty converter
plus theres gonna be a big marine battery behind it 3x the size of normal batterys 3x as heavy too   and i have to lift it
but i might bring along a UPS but not the one that i bought that cant keep up with my system it keeps shutting its self off like the house lost power, its just a faulty unit

  • VirtualBox vboxdrv module, not a problem, just a question

Well, ive installed Virtualbox, and ive got to modprove vboxdrv to get that module loaded so VirtualBox can run... Ive thought to put this on the rc.conf, so i dont need to modprove ir every time i boot and want to use vbox. But whats the drawback of having a module loaded always?, i mean, does it consumes resources as much as considering this? or i just add it to my rc.conf? I dont use vbox everyday, just isolated use... so for the moment modproving it everytime i need it doesnt hurt... , thnx!

xracer wrote:i mean, does it consumes resources as much as considering this?
Yes, it will consume resources, mainly RAM... It's up to you if that usage is worth savings by loading and unloading all the time. Personally, I just leave it loaded. One less thing to worry about.

  • Not a problem, just a question

The iChat file transfer isn't handling large transfers too well. I'm looking for a way to transfer files over ip mac to mac. Such as an episode of a tv for example.

    Hi The Void,
Have you Zipped it first ?
Have you thought of other methods ?
A VPN may produce faster speeds.

I have been experiencing the same problem. My mail app won't even open on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. It will show as open, but the app will never actually show up.

It should not be a problem, as long as you are careful. Note the delete settings option when uninstalling firefox will delete bookmarks etc for ALL installed versions of firefox.
Firefox attempts to retain the profile information, that include bookmarks etc when updating. It may still be prudent to consider other backup methods not entirely dependent on firefox.
The firefox 4 beta will install by default in a slightly different location, you are then able to run either the current or the beta version of firefox. It is recommended you set up a new profile for the new version of firefox. see

  • TS3899 I just installed the latest software update on my iPhone this weekend (9/22/12), and now I can't get email. I've restarted and closed all my apps to no avail. I'm able to get email on my laptop, so it's not a problem with my provider. Any ideas?

Originally we were getting the error that the phone could not connect. Then, after deleting the account multiple times and re-adding it again, the error message CHANGED to having to log in to Yahoo and authorize.
When we went to Yahoo in a regular browser and logged in there was an alert telling us about connection attempts so it disabled mobile/iphone connectivity. It required that we change our password FIRST.
Then, we went in to Manage Apps and Webpages and saw that iPhone was not there but Facebook was.
After all of this went back to the phone and deleted then re-added the account again and SUCCESS!
It now also shows up on the Yahoo Manage Apps and Webpages.
Hope this helps someone else. Please consider giving me points if it does or like the post.

It has been indicated that both of those cameras will be supported in the final release of Camera Raw 8.7. But there is no announced release date. There never is. I assume it will be before December 31. But that is only my guess based on the fact that the release candidate expires then.

My iPhone 5 just fell on the floor from a water tumbler. The height mayb like 2 -3 feet. i'm just curious to know if i have to worry about any kind of internal damage. It had a moshi cover on when it fell but it fell on the side of the screen so just worried about the microphone or the front camera. Someone please reply if i should go to Apple and give the phone for a hardware check.

The only choice you have is accept it as it is or pay for a replacement
Any user damage is not covered by the warranty but at any time if you have problems in the future you can obtain an out of warranty exchange unit for $229 in US
I would forget it for now ,just not drop it again

this is exactly the kind of response i expected, almost begged support to please not do this to me and yet there it is another meaningless, non helpful, standard template response to restart my apple tv.
this does NOT work which is why i am contacting you. i have tried all suggestions about unplugging and restarting and nothing works.
i live in an apartment and logon to the provided wifi wireless. so i do not have access to a router. however, management says they have talked with their provider and have been assured that the required ports are available.
remember all the jokes about how bad windows was because the solution was always to re boot. funny huh? how is apple any different.
i have been to the local apple care store and they are clueless, too.
should we just end it here and you admit that i will not be getting any support from apple on this one? i got the ipad because my kids were such big fans. it is difficult for me to share their enthusiasm.
at this point i am just curious about how you say you cannot support your own product so i can complete my file on this contact.
thanks...sorry it was you who got this problem..

  • Hp smart web printing does not work on firefox. HP says this is not their problem and to contact Mozilla. Is there a plug in available?

I just bought a new hp printer. the software has a feature called HP web smart printing. The feature works on explorer but not on Firefox. HP says this is not their problem and suggested I contact Mozilla. Is an add on available and if not will one be made available.
I am using v. 3.6.13. and the printer is HP Officejet 4500.

HP smart web printing is an application that only works with IE. In spite of what HP have told you, if they want their application to work with Firefox they will need to make a version for Firefox. It is not down to Mozilla to make a version of the HP software for Firefox.
