Not able to boot after updating to 10.5.1

Hi all,
Have been running 10.5 on an external disk having left Tiger on the internal.
After updating to 10.5.1 the system doesn't boot at all. I get the grey screen with the apple symbol and NO spinning "wheel". I have to re-boot from the install DVD to be able to change the start volume to 10.4.11. From Tiger I have tried to change the start-up volume to 10.5.1 again but still the same problem, in some cases it goes back and starts Tiger even if I set the volume to Leopard.
Re-installing 10.5 doesn't change anything, the older version behaves in the same way.
I suspect it must have something to do with booting sequence.
Any suggestions ?????

If you're comfortable with opening things up you could take the drive out of its case and plug it into the ide cable inside the G4 along with your existing system drive. (Assuming this is a G4 tower)
To be on the safe side you could just swap it with your current internal disk and see if it boots as well.

That is never a good time when you are getting error messages when you are trying to restore. If you are getting a bunch of variations of error 0xE and on windows, take a look at the article below for some troubleshooting options to get it back up so you can use your iPhone.

My mac is not able to boot after internet recovery

Hi I Own an i mac27 inch which i bought in year 2011. Recently it showed some disc errors and got crashed with a blue screen. I was not able to boot it in a safe mode and had to remove my data via a thunderbolt cable. After removing the data i formatted the hard drive with mac format thinking that would remove the bad sectors. But I realized it wont even start up again in a recovery mode. So i tried to boot it via a bootable USB drive. Now When i press Command+R i get only two options (1. Bootable OSX Drive, 2.Internet connection) None of the options are of any help. Any suggestions??

From your post it looks like you are trying to reformat your hard drive, but are unable to boot into recovery. Since you have a newer iMac, you should be able to boot to internet recovery. Booting to internet recovery occurs automatically if your startup drive has an issue. If you are seeing boot drive options when starting up, then you may just be holding down the option key on the keyboard. Both options you do see to boot from, should be able to help in reformatting your hard drive.

I pad is not able to check for updates even. plz help.

Try some basic troubleshooting:
(A) Try reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
(B) Try reset all settings
Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings
(C) Setup as new (data will be lost if you do not have backup)
Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings

Not able to sync after updation

After i updated the softwere to IOS 5.0 version im not able to sync the phone so far, more than 20 attemps so far over 6 months of time.
i could not update it until i deleted all video and songs from phone,
after that so far not able to sync or load any files to handset.
it start syncing and gets struck at backingup up "STEP 2 OF 7".
tried updating itunes to latest one and also IOS to 5.0.1 thought handset,
Its one scrap set now with only contacts, apps and photos.

Just spent over an hour debugging my wife's audible problems as well. iPhone updates, iTunes updates, reboot, pull hair out etc...
What I've determined is the "Sync Manager" window - when you select what to sync to you iPod/iPhone device that you've selected in the left hand window - does not appear to work for Audio Books.
We we're choosing Sync Audiobooks -> Selected audiobooks and NOTHING we selected was getting synced. More importantly, and this took a long time to see, none of the selected items were reflected in the little checkboxes in her iTunes library view.
Once I MANUALLY selected the books in the iTunes library view, things started syncing.
So it appears the audio books you select to sync when setting up your phone, do not get registered properly as "things to sync".
Definitely looks like an iTunes bug to me. Until they fix it, try manually checking the books you want to sync in your library view.

Huge problem, not able to boot after shut down.

I just updated the Firmware 1.8 to eliminate the optical drive noise, thought my computer would restart but it said it wasn't necessary. So I continued using it, writing a document. I had Safari, Pages, Mail open-- I opened up PhotoBooth to take a picture of my brother and I and my computer stopped responding all together. Eventually I had to shut it down by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. Ever since then when I try to restart it- it will not move past the Apple logo screen with the spinning cog. I have tried to boot from a leopard install disc (holding down 'c') and it just keeps restarting. I've also tried to boot a Data Rescue program, and again it just keeps restarting- like it will not boot at all from the CD drive. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Just tried to boot in Safe Mode and it wouldn't. Also performed the fsck check until it said my hard drive was ok- and it is still performing the same actions. Thank you for the reply. Is there anything else you can think of?

Please try to boot into WinRE and run the Startup Repair option.
Generally speaking, when you add feature like Hyper-V, system would take a long time to get this feature configured. if your computer still stay updates configuration steps, you can use Windows 8.1 installation image to repair system. In system repair mode,
you can access into Command Prompt mode, and check CBS.log under C:\Windows\logs\CBS.
This log file would record Windows installation process, we may find the problem of Hyper-V installation.

If it is one year old minus one day it is still under warranty. If it is more than a year since you purchased it then yes, the warranty has expired.
Millions of iPads have been sold. Most continue to function long after their warranty has expired. Check the many requests about updating the iOS on the original iPad on these forums and you'll see that there are many iPads still working after three years. My iPad 2, which I had for over two years is still working well for my son in law who took it over from me when I bought a new one.
Given that there will always be a few iPads that fail early. Most of those will be covered under warranty. But some will fail after the warranty has expired and before the owner expected it to. I'm sorry to hear that you are in this category. Take your iPad to an Apple store and have it looked at. They will provide you with alternatives, one of which is to purchase a like model to the one that failed at a discount. You can then know your options and make the best choice for you.

Arch not booting after update due to udev problems

since an update yesterday one of my systems won't boot anymore.
I tried several solutions mentioned in the forum with no success:
1) went back to an older kernel
2) uninstalled and reinstalled mkinitcpio, delete and got a new mkinitcpio.conf
and ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 on the kernel
I had a sort of success by disabling autoloading in rc.conf. Instead of just crashing
as with autoload enabled it went through to the boot prompt. But I couldn't test any further because I had only usb-keyboard available and that didn't work due to some a missing module I guess . I'll try to get my hands on a PS2 keyboard and look how far I can get later.
I think the key to the problem might be that I use JFS for both root and home partition (ext2 for boot). From the error messages before the crash it looks like the computer can't reach the root-device. I tried to add jfs to the modules section of mkinitcpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio -p kernel26 again but no change.
Maybe someone can give me a hint how to get the system up again and fixing the udev problems. This setup did work for the last couple of months so maybe there was some recent change in this regard I overlooked.
I'm using testing repos and thats what might happen at bleeding edge, no complaining . Nevertheless I would be very interested to understand whats happening and how do get the system up again.

I had merged the pacnew-files already. I read through the udev-readme and did the suggested changes (for example in modprobe.conf) but still not able to boot.
If I boot failsafe I can actually read an error message on the screen instead of blanking out:

/dev/sda3 is the correct root-device but I have no raid. I have two hdd's (one IDE, one SATA) and one DVD-RAM on IDE as slave, nothing more, nothing less.
If I boot via install-cd I can mount /dev/sda3. Sometimes I have to run fsck first because mount complains about bad superblock but after fsck I can mount without problem although it didn't report any error. I'm confused.

One possibility, is a strange occurence when applying the big 10.5.8 combo, most people have to Repair Permissions twice in a row, then reboot.

Not able to boot OES admin server

Can you mention the steps you used before running the ales_install script? Which WLS version are you using for Admin Server? Is it CP3 or CP4 patched?

Mac won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4

I am on my 3rd Mac that won't boot after updating to OSX 10.6.4. One MacBook Pro and two iMacs. I fixed one but the last two are getting the better of me. HD is not fried. Have tried every keyboard shortcut on startup, Disk Warrior via. Target Disk, repairing permissions in single user mode. The machines will not boot off of a CD or DVD and it will not boot up in safe mode. Something in the startup files is preventing startup. I am suspecting Sophos antivirus. I tried to uninstall it and trash it but I think it's still blocking something. Any help would be appreciated.

Got it! Not sure if removing Sophos had anything to do with it but here's what I did.
1) boot dead machine in Target Disk Mode (iMac)
2) boot good machine off Snow Leopard disk (MacBook)
3) install OS to dead machine- I found this next part very curious. When the install was complete the MacBook restarted as the iMac.
4) ran software updates
5) shut down MacBook then shut down iMac
6) rebooted iMac- all was good
I actually did this twice because a co-worker had the exact same problem on her MacBook Pro. Got both fixed today.

Mac Pro not able to boot into 64 bit kernel?

I've been trying to boot while using the 6 and 4 buttons held down to no avail. This mac pro was bought in 2007 (work computer). Am I not able to boot into 64 bit mode with Snow Leopard? If so, does that mean I can't take advantage of the 64 bit kernel?

Man, Yes, when I am rendering all 8 cores in Maya, up to 4 gigs of ram are being used. Why is that so hard to believe? I should be able to render in RAM preview in After Effects a whole lot more than i can now without cacheing.!!!!
Is Maya a 64 bit application? If Maya is not using more than 4GB, than you should be talking to the Maya developers.
You should be able to use Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and look at the "Kind" field. If it says "intel (64 bits)", then it is a 64 bit application.
How many times do I have to state "YES, I will be using more than 4 gigs of RAM per program"?

You are responding to my post, so I'm going to say, I have been working for major computer manufactures since the early 70's working with "Big Iron" computer systems, not PCs, and I most likely know a lot more about how computers work, then many computer users. Please do not tell me I do not understand. I've been working with 64 bit code since the early 90's.

Are you saying AFX (is that After Effects?) is not a 64 bit application yet? If not, then I suggest you talk to Adobe, not Apple.
Just for fun, I wrote a sample program, which allocated a large amount of memory. I ran it on my iMac with is booted with a 32 bit 10.6.2 Snow Leopard kernel. Here are the results:

My program has more than 4GB of physical RAM (4.74GB), and a virtual memory size of 9.32GB.
If I use Activity Monitor, I can see that my program is listed with a Kind of "intel (64 bit)".
So if Maya cannot use more than 4GB of memory, it is a Maya problem. Talk to the Maya developers.

A response I put together from another post. Also going into iTunes and choosing to sync phone to iCloud then back "this computer" sometimes works.
First thing.. Stop where you are. Don't try to sync, update, hard reset, iCloud... Just stop.
Check on your phone under 'SETTINGS' 'GENERAL' USAGE'. It should show some value for PHOTOSTREAM. Also, connect to iTunes and you will notice at the bottom of your phones summary page that there is a large amount of 'OTHER' data.
I used third party software called iExplorer (formerly iPhone explorer). In this program you select 'MEDIA FOLDER', then 'DCIM'. In the various apple folders (IE: 101APPLE) you should be able to preview your photos and copy them to your desktop.
From there sync them back to your device through iTunes or whatever method you use.
There is a simpler solution I'm sure, which may involve using iExplorer to delete some .plist files then restart the phone and let it rebuild. I'm going to try it myself AFTER I've finished copying all the photos to my MAC
