Not able to boot

I have been working with our school system to recycle the old systems so they aren't just thrown away. I currently have 8 Imac G3 333Mhz with a tray loading cdrom and many more on the way.
In trying to install 9.2.2 I have run into problems.
I am unable to get these to boot to the cd - any cd. I have held down the "c" upon boot and it loads the hard drive. I have done the "Programmers Button" fix with no result. Another sugggestion was to remove the battery, no luck. I even found a post that said to change the amount of ram by removing a dimm, that did not work either.
I believe that they have installed software to keep the kids from making changes, this software must have changed the bios to disable the ability to boot to a cd. It also will not read any cd after it boots. I thought this could be a bad cdrom, so I tested it and the drive and cd reads fine on another machine. Also this is the same result on multiple systems so I doubt it is a hardware failure.
I would like to reinstall the os so these can be put to some use other than parting them out. But how?
G3 333   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi Xavier
If they are all behaving the same then it would suggest that the drives have been disabled somehow.
I don't know of a way of doing it other than by turning of extensions - but in your case, the CDs are not being read before the extension load so that is not the answer.
Try taking out one of the Hard-drives, formatting it and reinstalling using another Mac and then put it back in and see what happens. From the above para, logic says it shouldn't affect the CD issue (but since when has logic had anything to do with computers?)
You've nothing to lose by trying.

  • Hyper V feature in Win 8.1 after getting installed , system is not able to boot up

I am using Windows 8.1 professional x64 os in my Hp pavilion G6 laptop which has virtualisation technology enabled in the bios , but after enabling hyper v feature in the windows system is not able to boot up and circles around for a long time. I need
hyper v on my laptop , kindly help me out for the same.

    Hi,
Please try to boot into WinRE and run the Startup Repair option.
Generally speaking, when you add feature like Hyper-V, system would take a long time to get this feature configured. if your computer still stay updates configuration steps, you can use Windows 8.1 installation image to repair system. In system repair mode,
you can access into Command Prompt mode, and check CBS.log under C:\Windows\logs\CBS.
This log file would record Windows installation process, we may find the problem of Hyper-V installation.

  • I'n not able to boot Osx 10.6 from Firewire Hd if I use USB yes ... Why?

    Hi ,
I've problem with the internal hd of my Imac. The option is to change de HD or to use an external HD to boot from.
At the Apple store they showed me the possibility to use a firewire HD to install and run the system on my mac . I already had a firewire HD , a WD my passport studio, but I'install easoly the operative system on the HD connected by a firewire but when I need to reboot the system doen't recognize any operative system. If I reboot using the USB is OK but not with the firewire ... so I can install OSX on a firewire but I'm not able to boot using the same connection , I have to switch to USB... Somebody can help me? I read something about some problems that Snow Leopard have with firewire ... maybe using lion can be better?
Thanks and sorry for my grammar mistakes

It is free. It is beta. It works well - I use it on mine and two PCs as well...
MS Security Essentials will no longer install due to compatibiliity issues - that is the idea of a beta - and the RC could be out in June.
Windows 7 doesn't work great on any Mac, or Apple drivers, fan cvontrol to manage heat, and other issues.
Put 8 in and get to know it, then when the RC comes out you'll be ready

  • Mac Pro not able to boot into 64 bit kernel?

    Hello,
I've been trying to boot while using the 6 and 4 buttons held down to no avail. This mac pro was bought in 2007 (work computer). Am I not able to boot into 64 bit mode with Snow Leopard? If so, does that mean I can't take advantage of the 64 bit kernel?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Man, Yes, when I am rendering all 8 cores in Maya, up to 4 gigs of ram are being used. Why is that so hard to believe? I should be able to render in RAM preview in After Effects a whole lot more than i can now without cacheing.!!!!
Is Maya a 64 bit application? If Maya is not using more than 4GB, than you should be talking to the Maya developers.
You should be able to use Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and look at the "Kind" field. If it says "intel (64 bits)", then it is a 64 bit application.
How many times do I have to state "YES, I will be using more than 4 gigs of RAM per program"?
Why is it the tech people really don't understand how intensive program dynamics like Maya and Blender are,
You are responding to my post, so I'm going to say, I have been working for major computer manufactures since the early 70's working with "Big Iron" computer systems, not PCs, and I most likely know a lot more about how computers work, then many computer users. Please do not tell me I do not understand. I've been working with 64 bit code since the early 90's.
and yet Apple touts their excellence in 64 bit programs like AFX, yet, I can't use more than 4 gb of RAM?
Are you saying AFX (is that After Effects?) is not a 64 bit application yet? If not, then I suggest you talk to Adobe, not Apple.
Just for fun, I wrote a sample program, which allocated a large amount of memory. I ran it on my iMac with is booted with a 32 bit 10.6.2 Snow Leopard kernel. Here are the results:
PID RESIDENT VIRTUAL PageFlt Reclaim COMMAND
    54296 4.74G 9.32G 0K 0K tmp
My program has more than 4GB of physical RAM (4.74GB), and a virtual memory size of 9.32GB.
If I use Activity Monitor, I can see that my program is listed with a Kind of "intel (64 bit)".
So if Maya cannot use more than 4GB of memory, it is a Maya problem. Talk to the Maya developers.

  • My mac is not able to boot after internet recovery

Hi I Own an i mac27 inch which i bought in year 2011. Recently it showed some disc errors and got crashed with a blue screen. I was not able to boot it in a safe mode and had to remove my data via a thunderbolt cable. After removing the data i formatted the hard drive with mac format thinking that would remove the bad sectors. But I realized it wont even start up again in a recovery mode. So i tried to boot it via a bootable USB drive. Now When i press Command+R i get only two options (1. Bootable OSX Drive, 2.Internet connection) None of the options are of any help. Any suggestions??

    Hello nachi777,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post it looks like you are trying to reformat your hard drive, but are unable to boot into recovery.  Since you have a newer iMac, you should be able to boot to internet recovery.  Booting to internet recovery occurs automatically if your startup drive has an issue.  If you are seeing boot drive options when starting up, then you may just be holding down the option key on the keyboard.  Both options you do see to boot from, should be able to help in reformatting your hard drive.

If it is one year old minus one day it is still under warranty. If it is more than a year since you purchased it then yes, the warranty has expired.
Millions of iPads have been sold. Most continue to function long after their warranty has expired. Check the many requests about updating the iOS on the original iPad on these forums and you'll see that there are many iPads still working after three years. My iPad 2, which I had for over two years is still working well for my son in law who took it over from me when I bought a new one.
Given that there will always be a few iPads that fail early. Most of those will be covered under warranty. But some will fail after the warranty has expired and before the owner expected it to. I'm sorry to hear that you are in this category. Take your iPad to an Apple store and have it looked at. They will provide you with alternatives, one of which is to purchase a like model to the one that failed at a discount. You can then know your options and make the best choice for you.

  • Peoplesoft App Server - Not able to boot Domain

    Hi all.
I've installed Peoplesoft 9.1, PT8.52 (Oracle 11G 64 bit database) on windows 2008 server 64bit and an HRMS DEMO DB on a Virtual machine PSDEMOVM.
I also installed Oracle 11G client 32, and configured a PS client workstation on another virtual machine PSDEMOVS
I did all the steps and now, from the server machine, I entered PSADMIN and created a domain following all the configuration steps.
I am not able to serial boot this domain, it shows the following errors:
    'Error Application Initialization failure
Error: Fatal Error Encountered, initializing user error handler'
And the appserver.log file shows the following errors:
'PS General SQL Routines: Missing or invalid version of SQL Library PSORA (200,0)
Database Signon: Could not sign in to database PSHRDEMO with user PS'
So I thought it is because the unavailability of the Lib32 on the server machine.
So I installed Tuxedo on the client machine, to be able to access psadmin from there.
But unfortunately, when I choose to administer domain from the client machine, I am not able to see the domain that was created from the server, and when trying to create a new one, it says 'No available templates'.
I really need guidance through this asap.
    Best Regards and Thx,

PeopleTools 8.52 on Windows does indeed require the 32 bit client to connect to the database. If you're getting an "invalid version of SQL library PSORA" that means that the Application server is using the incorrect Oracle client to connect to the database. There's an "Add to Path" variable under domain settings in the Application server domain configuration file which has to point to the 32 bit client BIN directory.
In short; navigate to the PS_HOME on the server PSDEMOVM (if your PS_CFG_HOME is the same as PS_HOME, otherwise this directory will be under %USERPROFILE%\psft\pt\ by default or the directory which you specified). Open the appserv directory and open the directory with the name of your domain. Locate the configuration file for your domain ({DOMAIN}.cfg) and open it in notepad. Scroll down until you reach the domain settings and change the add to path variable to point to the bin directory of your 32-bit client.

  • Not able to boot anything...

I just picked up an eMac 1GHz off the street (strangely enough, all 4 of the Macs I have/had have been found waiting to be thrown away). Physically in good shape but when I plugged it in to boot it up, I got a flashing question mark/Finder icon that I'm sure is not from OS X. (image here: http://img31.imageshack.us/my.php?image=downloady.jpg the eMac was upside down on my bed so the photo is the wrong way...sorry )
I tried booting from Jaguar and Panther CD's that I have and tested them on my iMac G3 (working fine there). It seems, however, that the superdrive on the eMac doesn't want to do anything. I can eject the drive from OpenFirmware but doesn't sound like it's spinning up at all, and doesn't boot holding the C key or typing in commands in OF.
I have read about target disk mode and I suppose it will help me in some way, though first I need to get a 6pin-6pin 1394 cable. What exactly can I do with it, can I use the iMac's working drive to install Panther on the eMac? That would be ideal as I don't have Tiger but would like to at least be able to use Firefox 3. Or can I install Jaguar on the iMac to the eMac's drive? (side note: iMac's previous owner upgraded to 10.2 w/o upgrading firmware, so I'm stuck with it)
I'd like to be able to repair the current install if possible, otherwise using the target disk mode seems like the only other thing to do. I've zapped the PRAM, removed ram/battery etc. nothing helped as I expected.
I look forward to your replies!

Hey, I got the firewire cable and I was able to successfully boot the iMac's Jaguar install on the eMac (runs fantastically on the G4 compared to the G3 ) and I also put the eMac in firewire mode and installed to the eMac's hard drive; the eMac's hard drive was previously empty but now I can see all of the system files but still it won't boot even if I select it from the Startup Disk preferences.
I tried running some command form Open Firmware (boot hd:,\\:tbxi) on the eMac and now it says "Parsing CHRP-BOOT - Bootinfo is not compatible". That's better than before where it would say "can't OPEN: hd:,\\:tbxi" but perhaps I need some other command. I've tried reset-nvram and reset-all, nothing.
the eMac's superdrive will not respond to any discs that I place in it. I guess it's busted.
I'll try using the iMac's CD drive to install on the eMac (I'd love panther or tiger), how do I do that? Any special method? Thank you for the reply!

  • Not able to boot, and PB doesn't react to install disk

    Hello.
I upgraded my powerbook to 10.4.8, and then it wouldn't boot up after i restarted it. It just shoows the apple, and the round loading thing.. Then i can quickly see the "starting mac os x" prompt, but it quickly (within a second) disappears, and then all i can see is a blue screen.. Not like the windows BSOD, it's just blue. Like the starting prompt would have been there, it just isn't. Then at around every 10th second I can quickly see the round loading thing, but that quickly disappears again.. All in all, very weird. And suddenly.
But I thought it then would be a good time to reinstall mac os x, just you know, start of fresh. So I inserted the disk 1 (the version I have on DVD is 10.4.4 i think), but nothing happens. Not even the slightest reaction to the disk being in the drive.. Just the excact same as described above.
I have no idea of what to do, except take it to a store.. But, it would be nice to avoid that..
    Thank you in advance
Ps. I am really not up for totally formatting my harddrive since I have precious data.. If that is the only thing to do, I would like to know how to get the HD out and then back it up on another mac/pc ..

    Hello.
    [snipped]
Ps. I am really not up for totally formatting my
harddrive since I have precious data.. If that is the
only thing to do, I would like to know how to get the
HD out and then back it up on another mac/pc ..
    Greetings isakk.
If your PB is under warranty, you may not want to physically remove your HD; that might invalidate your warranty. If you don't care about that, do a search on the Web for "PowerBook HD replacement" and see what turns up. There are a few third-party guides published out on the Web that goes through the step-by-step process in removing/replacing a PowerBook HD.
But may I suggest another alternative? If your PB can act as a FireWire target disk, you can connect it up to another FireWire equipped Mac and access the PB's HD like any other externally connected HD. The process is quite simple:
    1. With the PB off (and, if you'd like, the other Mac as well), connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable.
    2. Boot up the other Mac normally, if not already on. Wait for the normal Desktop to appear.
    3. While powering up the PB, press and hold the "T" key on the keyboard. This will trigger the PB's firmware to boot up as an external FireWire drive. The PB's screen will simply display a large FireWire icon slowly bouncing around; this is the sign the PB is in FireWire target disk mode.
    4. On the other Mac's Desktop, your PB should appear with a typical FireWire HD icon. From there, you should be able to manipulate the files on your PB's HD as you can on any other HD.
FireWire target disk mode is also handy to reload the operating system in a pinch. Provided your OS install/restore discs will work on the other Mac, you can use that Mac's CD/DVD drive in which to put your OS disc, start up the OS install process, and select the FireWire target HD as the recipient of the process. While this may not be an Apple "sanctioned" capability for installing or repairing an OS on a HD, it does work for some Macs.
Hope this info helps. I apologize for not being able to provide useful information from the meat of your post; I haven't installed the 10.4.8 update yet (I'm waiting to see what the fallout is for those who like to play on the bleeding edge of updates).
    Regards,
    Steve

  • HELP!! powerbook stuck on grey screen, not able to boot safe or single user

hey, i need some help, ive searched the forums the best i could, im experianced at fixing pc's but this has been my first mac in awhile, a friend of mine brought his 12" powerbook g4 to me, he says whenever he turns is on its stays stuck on the first screen where you see a grey apple and it shows a spinning wheel loading, he said hes even left it on overnight and it still stays there, he said he might have gotten a virus, cause he said he was searching **** last time it worked =P (hey i dont judge, every man has to find someway to reveive the "pressure")
so anyway, i dont have alot of his specs, not even the exact o/s # i just know he told me it osx 10.4, so i did some research and found some ways to TRY and fix it, i tried safe mode (shift) and single user mode (cmd+s) and even verbose mode(cmd+v) when booting up the powerbook, but alas, none have worked, safe mode doesnt do anything, just the same grey screen, and single and verbose mode both halts after the cmd screen goes through a few lines.
he doesnt have any software for his powerbook, they are all at home, which is about 900 kms away (or 559.26 miles to the non-metric ppl out there) so im working with nothing but my brain and the net, which isnt much, does anybody have any suggestions, maybe some third party software that would help, just point me in the right direction, or better yet, explain it to me like i was an infant, im not used to macs, but they intrigue. at least for now, i dont want to be put off just from this one little incident.
thanks to anyone who offers help, its my first time EVER asking for it in any forum.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There's a couple of things I can think of that may be the problem. Based upon what you have described, the first is a hard drive failure.
A couple of ways to check for this is to use the PowerBook's original installer disc (which you don't currently have access to), or perhaps a Mac OS X Tiger installation disc, to restart from and then use Disk Utility to perform a Repair Disk. Restarting from CD or DVD is performed by pressing the 'C' key during startup with the disc in the PB.
Another way to check is to see if the drive can be accessed via FireWire Target Disk Mode.
A second possibility is that there may be a directory corruption on the drive. If so, then DiskWarrior is the best option.
Another possibility is to take the PB in to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for them to diagnose.

I just updated the Firmware 1.8 to eliminate the optical drive noise, thought my computer would restart but it said it wasn't necessary. So I continued using it, writing a document. I had Safari, Pages, Mail open-- I opened up PhotoBooth to take a picture of my brother and I and my computer stopped responding all together. Eventually I had to shut it down by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. Ever since then when I try to restart it- it will not move past the Apple logo screen with the spinning cog. I have tried to boot from a leopard install disc (holding down 'c') and it just keeps restarting. I've also tried to boot a Data Rescue program, and again it just keeps restarting- like it will not boot at all from the CD drive. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Just tried to boot in Safe Mode and it wouldn't. Also performed the fsck check until it said my hard drive was ok- and it is still performing the same actions. Thank you for the reply. Is there anything else you can think of?

  • Brand new machines are not able to boot to Disk or Network

    Hi all,
Ok so I have several new iMac's and MacBook Pro's that I am trying to get to boot to the network so that I can run DeployStudio to image with a dual boot OS. I keep running into a problem in which the machine will boot to the HD but will not boot to the network (N key) this also happens when i try to boot to disk (C key) instead the machine just hangs at the white screen. Even when I try options, they system recognizes the CD and network, but when selected will just hang again at the white screen. It seems that the only thing I can get the systems to boot is the HD and target mode (T key).
I had this happen a couple weeks ago with a MacBook Pro and Apple has said it may be a bad logic board and ended up replacing it (still waiting on the replacement). I was wondering if anyone has had the same issue and has found a solution. This problem has been going on for about a month now and is becoming more evident closer the new semester comes. Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is that the upper level IT drones need to create an image that will boot the newest Macs & have not yet done so. See Mac OS X Server: Creating a single NetBoot or NetInstall image for multiple Mac models for more about this. From that source:
"When Apple releases newer hardware and there is not a newer retail installation disc available yet, you should use the disc that shipped with the computer to create a separate image."
