This has solved loads of people who have this issue and have used an alternate DNS setting. Below are instructions for both iPhone OTA and on you Mac
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try an OTA (over the air update)
Change DNS Servers
Settings -> Wi-Fi
Click the blue arrow on your connected network
Delete everything in DNS and replace it with 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
Try again
If this works, you will probably want to remove the WiFi network using "Forget This Network" and then reconnect to it to get your original DNS servers back. Alternatively, make a note of the original DNS servers before deleting them and replace it after you are done.
If you are getting the error message "Unable to check for update" when you try through iTunes
On your Mac
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
Select the network connection service you want to use (such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, unless you named it something else) from the list, and then click Advanced.
Click DNS, and then click Add at the bottom of the DNS Servers list. Enter the IPv4 address for the DNS server.

Yeah, not sure where you're getting that information from. You can still get 4.2.1 for a 3G, and 6.1.3 for a 3GS, both via iTunes. You can even go from 5.0+ to 6.1.3 on a 3GS via wi-fi.

This is generally a setting. Turn it off by following these steps:
Open Google Play > Choose Menu > Settings > Tap "Update over Wi-Fi only" and turn that off!

I cannot download this player to Windows XP. I keep getting Operating Sytem Error 16244.203.296-42072312.80040154.FFFFFFFF80040154. I have tried uninstall, changing authority on IE, turned off security. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

I've downloaded successfully and it runs in Firefox and IE7. The original problem was, I think, that Zone Alarm gave me a warning on getPlus and I denied it. I went back to try to remove it from Zone Alarm so it would prompt again but it didn't. To get it to work I downloaded Firefox and then tried to install the player. It said it installed but I got an O/S error. The download screen was different for Firefox than when I downloaded for IE7. I then went back to IE7 and tried to download it again, this time it worked. I got warnings from Zone Alarm but allowed them all.

Installing, and uninstalling, applications never touches or removes the data.
Clean out and uninstall all the apple programs and software thru Programs and manually.
Might want to use Revo and CCleaner
I always use manual standalone installers (and keep a couple backup versions)
itunes 10.5 may affect iTunes media playlists, not sure, depends on what you have.
A search of these forums will show some threads.
I'd clean up vista, you need SP2 or later, and specific error message?
I wonder as you arenot the first with a dell if maybe the OS or included software.
Security programs like Norton and older versions of Kaspersky have been implicated.

You have to have an internet connection, either wireless or through a computer with iTunes. When you choose Software Update you can only update to the latest version for your iPod Touch, iOS 6.1.6

It is also a problem with POP3, not just IMAP. This seems to be widespread. My MAC Mail was working fine until the 10.10.1 update. Geek Squad Agents spent almost 8 hours trying to figure this out and get me up and running again. They did EVERYTHING! And I do mean EVERYTHING (a shout out to them for going above and beyond with this!) Nothing worked. It seems that no changes were made to MAC MAIL in the upgrade and it is still the version used in Mavericks. It also seems that it is NOT compatible with the 10.10.1 upgrade and therefore the PLIST file becomes corrupt even with a re-build (we re-built mine 2 times). They recommended a complete reinstall of 10.10.1, but due to the holiday selling season I'm going to wait until JAN to take my computer in to Best Buy for this. I'm also hoping that Apple will send out an update fixing this issue before then. In the mean time, they have installed Mozilla Thunderbird (a free open source mail app) so that I can send and receive email via my computer!
Apple will need to fix this but until them I'm recommending anyone with this problem try a complete reinstall or use another email application on their computer.
