  • Can't 'see" other computers on my home network

    I just added a third Mac to my home network. We already had a G4 running OSX.2 and an iBook running OSX.4. I've now added a G4 running OSX.4, but the new computer doesn't "see" the other computers in the network list.
    On the first G4, if I browse the network (by pressing apple-K) I see the other two computers, the iBook and the new G4.
    On the iBook, if I open a finder window and click the "Network" icon, I get the other two computers listed.
    But on the new G4, if I open a finder window and select the Network icon, I get three folders, "Applications", "Library", and "Users". And these three folders are apparently empty.
    I DO have internet connection, so the connection is okay. And if I press apple-K to get a server list, and type in the IP address of one of the other two computers, I can access them that way. But why don't they show up on the Network list? What do I have configured wrong? Obviously, I CAN use the "apple-k" connect-to-servers-by-typing-in-the-IP-address method, but it's not as "nice" as having them just show up in the network window.
    I'm sure it's something simple that I missed, and I'll probably feel like an idiot when someone points it out, but fire away folks!
    G4 867Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    make sure you have your automounter running. Do this in a terminal to make sure:
    ps aux|grep -i automount
    If it is not running, you may have turned it off using some utility (bad idea). It's controlled by the NFS startup item and should be enabled so the OSX API can listen for traffic on port 548, which is the Apple Fileshare Protocol port of register.
    if this is confusing, I can give more detail when I arrive at my home.

  • I am not able to see my contacts marked as home or...

    I am not able to see my contacts marked as home or work while texting. I am only able to see my mobile contact in add list of text message.

    If you tag a contact number as anything other than "mobile" Windows won't recognise the number as a mobile number and it won't come up as an option to be available to send an SMS to.
    This is supposed to stop you sending SMS by mistake to a landline. It is flawed in that if you by mistake have tagged a landline as a mobile number it will come as an option to text to.
    I'm not sure if it's the same on Windows 8 but on Windows 7 you cannot allocate the tag mobile to a contact more than once even if the contact has more than one mobile number.

  • Do I need to have Airport Express to connect to other computers on our homer network?

    Do I need to have Airport Express to connect to other computers on our homer network?

    Not necessarily. You could use the "Create Network" feature of your MBP's built-in AirPort card to provide an Ad-hoc wireless network for local wireless-capable computers to connect to.

  • Can see but not connect to other computers on my home network

    New laptop running 8.1 replaces crashed one (also ran 8.1). After setup, can see the other computer on Home Network (uses Windows 7). That one can also "see" the new laptop. ( Both computers appear in the network folder). Neither
    will connect to the other. Get "cannot access message, check name etc."
    Both computers are in same Homegroup, tried all the tests mentioned in support . . .everything seems set properly. Ran through all the network and homegroup diagnostics fine. Tried connecting with both firewalls disabled.
    Is there a solution I'm not aware of? Others seem to have similar if not identical problem.

    Hi wrkeen,
    Please share more details about this issue:
    1. Provide the error messages for better analyzation.
    2. What solution have you done to test the homegroup?
    If we enable the network discovery, we will be able to find other computers or devices on the network.
    Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Run the network troubleshooter to exclude the network issues. For more information, please refer to the following article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/using-the-network-troubleshooter-in-windows-7
    2. Go through this path Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and check if we correctly configure file sharing and other settings.
    Please take a look at the following article about troubleshooting file sharing.

  • Users not able to see remote users on the node network

    Users that belong to one node are not able to see users in another calendar
    server node. Both calendar servers are pointing to the same directory server.
    Some errors that occur in the log files:
    DEXOTEK ERRCODE Ox13608 -> SchedBaseOpen: Section name too long
    DEXOTEK ERRCODE Ox13608 -> OpenConnection: SchedBaseOpenOnHost
    And when uninode -cws nodeID is run, it does not report being able to see all
    the users and resources on the remote nodes.
    uninode: connected to hostname.net.xxx.com, node 10000
    directory of items: 10 (USERS = 10/RESOURCES = 0)
    CONNECTION EX AV Q-SIZE IN-PROCESS IMPORT-DIR
    (10000)->xxxxxx.xxx.com(10001) 2 2 0 0 370 (U=370/R=0)
    Here is the nodes.ini file:
    + H=xxxxxxx.xxx.com/N=10000
    + H=xxxx.xxx.com/N=10001
    all=2
    There is a reported bug, that 16 chars is max on domain names for the nodes.ini
    file, which means that you need to change that file and use:
         a) an alias that can be resolved on the network with either DNS or local
         host files
         b) use the IP address.
    As documented in the release notes, here is the procedure on how to modify the
    hostname when it is too long. Or how to modify the hostname for any reason.
    Fix for long host names problem
    If the fully qualified domain name for your network exceeds 16 characters, it
    will be necessary to shorten the host name of all the servers in the Calendar
    Server network . These instructions must be carefully followed to avoid causing
    problems with the network. Ensure that the procedure is applied to ALL nodes in
    the Calendar network.
    1) The following procedure should be carried out on each server in the
    Calendar network:
    a) Bring the Calendar services down.
    % unistop -y
    b) Run the unidbfix command in export mode.
    % unidbfix -export -n node-id
    This will create a remotenode.ini file for each node on the server. The file is
    located in the node's perm directory.
    Example:
    If you have two nodes on the server ROCK, node 1(in N1) and node (in N2), the
    files are:
    /users/unison/db/nodes/N1/perm/remotenode.ini
    /users/unison/db/nodes/N2/perm/remotenode.ini
    The remotenode.ini file will look something like this:
    [1]
    RN_NUMCONNECT = 2
    RN_SURNAME = "unison"
    RN_GIVENNAME = "unison"
    RN_ORGUNIT1 = "uni2"
    RN_ORGUNIT2 = "openmail"
    RN_ORGANIZATION = "ABC Corp"
    RN_ACCESSMETHOD = 2
    RN_SERVICENAME = "unieng"
    RN_HOSTNAME = "rock"
    [2]
    RN_NUMCONNECT = 2
    RN_SURNAME = "unison"
    RN_GIVENNAME = "unison"
    RN_ORGUNIT1 = "uni4"
    RN_ORGUNIT2 = "openmail"
    RN_ORGANIZATION = "ABC Corp"
    RN_ACCESSMETHOD = 2
    RN_SERVICENAME = "unieng"
    RN_HOSTNAME = "rock"
    2) Once you have run unidbfix in export mode on all the servers, proceed as
    follows:
    a) Compare the remotenode.ini files and verify that the entries are the
    same. In each file, you will note that an entry for the local node is not
    included.
    b) Edit one of the files (on any of the servers). This file will be
    referred to as the master file. Add the appropriate entries for the
    local node (copy the section from one of the other files). Modify the
    RN_HOSTNAME in each of the sections of the master file to shorten the
    name.
    c) Copy the master file in the perm directories of each node on all the
    servers.
    3) Once the master file is in the perm directory of all the nodes, proceed as
    follows on each server:
    a) Run the unidbfix command in the -import mode.
    % unidbfix -import -n node-id
    b) Edit the nodes.ini file on the hub server and make the same changes to
    the host names. You do not need to apply the changes.
    c) Edit the [UTL] section of the /users/unison/misc/unison.ini file and
    change the host name.
    d) Start up the services.
    % unistart
    4) After all the changes have been made, run the uninode -cws all and
    uninode -snc all commands and verify that the results are accurate.

  • Network How do I see other computers on My wireless Network?

    Sorry everyone very new on Mac. I was trying to figure out how I could see what other computers were on my network. The network hub right now is on my windows pc. I can see all the pc's there including the Mac. My question is. Is there anything in MAC that allows you to see other computers??
    Thanks,
    Jim

    are you referring to the log which used to be in the previous admin utility and which disappeared with theis latest update? I am looking myself. Luckily I have an old Macbook with the previous version of admin utility on it.
    There is always the possibility of restoring your extreme to factory defaults and backing out of this latest release. I'm thinking of reverting myself.

  • Should I be able to see other peoples airports on my network thru airport utility?

    After upgrading to Lion, when I pull up airport utility, It gives me a list of peoples time cap[sules and airport extremes. This is on my home network. I'm not referring to people's wifi networks in my neighborhood, but actual apple routers listed under my airport utility. Why did this stat happening?

    Yes, chances are excellent that they cannot, especially if the following three things are followed: 1) The most obvious is to not give out the password, 2) The wireless is protected with either WPA or WPA2 standard encryption, and 3) That you use a non-dictionary password for that wireless password.

  • Connect as... no longer works. Cannot connect to other computers on my home network.

    I have a home network and it's been unchanged for years. Never had any issue with connecting to other computers, all of which are Macs running OS X. Now, if I click Connect As, nothing happens. Double-clicking the other computer in the Finder's sidebar or using Go To Server, etc. yields nothing. Even odder; the other machines no longer see me at all. No one has any Firewall on. File sharing is on for all machines. We're all on the same subnet and the same network, yet every other machine can connect to one another but not mine. Thoughts? Restarting has not helped. Thanks.

    If you are getting the error message that the server won't allow any more users to connect, and to try again later, this seems to be a problem with AFP sharing in Lion.
    The workaround for this so far is to go to System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing and click on Options...  On that window, turn OFF "Share files and folders using AFP" and turn ON "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" Click Done to go back to the sharing window and you should see a green dot followed by "Windows Sharing: On"
    Give that a try.

  • IPhone 4 not able to connect to the internet via home network

    WiFi is on. the home network appears under WiFi with a check mark, but when I go to Safari or go to download email, it's still using the 3G network. What's up? I've already reset the network settings. My kids iTouches are doing the same thing. Their error message is Cannot Open Page.

    I have the same problem. all started when upgraded my iphone 4 to iOS 4.3...
    hopefully, this fix this on the 4.3.1 and SOON!

  • Sharing Aperture Library with Other Computers on the Home Network

    Hello,
    Forgive me if this question has been asked before, if it has, I missed it.
    I have a mac on which I have Aperture and have taken the time to edit all of our family photos (cropping, color management, red eye reduction, etc.), so, after having done all of this, my wife, when showing her friends photos and such, would like to be able to have access to those photos on her mac laptop. But, I called Apple on this and their tech support guy made it sound like the only way to do this would be to create a web gallery for each set of pictures. And, I have to say, that solution seemed a bit extreme for sharing pictures within a home, not to mention the logistics for creating web galleries for tens of thousands of photos. So, the other option that occurred to me was that I could export all of the pictures into a directory and then have her iphoto import all of those pictures, however, there are two problems with that: 1) she is not up to date with new photos that have been added to Aperture and 2) the subfolder structure isn't preserved (i.e., it's just a huge mass of photos not a groups organized according to event).
    So, my question is: does anyone know a better more practical way to do this? I would think it would be something that Apple would foresee and have a fix for but maybe not.
    Thank you very much,
    Ken

    +"Single User License. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on one Apple-labeled desktop computer and one Apple-labeled laptop computer so long as both computers are owned and used by you."+
    I own an iMac and I pretend to buy an Apple laptop as secondary computer for my home, just after vacations, as now I have some more important expenses that should deliver new set of photos into Aperture library.
    iMac is in use by me, and my wife, and kid. I assume that it will be legal to install copy of Aperture on my new laptop. So I will end in same situation as you are today. In my opinion it will be legal to use Aperture on both computers, as both are in possession of my family, and at least in my country we are somehow single entity (we pay common taxes from our joint income etc.) - it depends on the marriage settlement, however we've choose it that way.
    In this case I'll simple export library and import it on my secondary computer. I own my iMac, and I'll own my Macbook Pro. At the same moment my wife own them as well. I'm not sure about your situation, but it might work for you. The questions is, is it really legal?

  • Upgraded to Mavericks but now I can't work out how to share my iPhoto 11 library with other computers on our home network?

    Any tips? There doesn't seem to be a sharing option under Preferences > General anymore?

    That feature has been removed from iPhoto.  They want you to use Shared Photo Streams to share with the other Macs. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • BT Fon shows computers on my HOME network!!

    Hi everyone -
    Our HomeHub came already set up for BTFon and we hadn't really noticed ... until we started to see other computers on our HOME network! I have a mac and the people using our BT Fon are appearing in the sidebar on Finder - should they be able to get onto my Home network? I thought BT Fon was a separate network ... does anyone know why this is happening? I have reset the HomeHub and changed the password  -  and I'm not on BT Fon but on my HomeHub when I can see the other users.
    Thanks!

    Hello Avenir,
    =======================================================================================
    Ok - the good news is that you are *NOT* connected to Fon. I'm also pretty sure that your Homehub is ok - the only thing I would do is change the WPA password on the Homehub to something different than the Factory setting.
    You can do this by going to:
    http://192.168.1.254
    W for Wireless Security.
    Type a new password, and write it down on a Post-it note. Put the key into the Wireless Key box and click Apply. You will then need to use this same key in the Airport setup.
    Any hosts which were connecting to your Wireless network now cannot be unless they can guess that password or have a lot of time on their hands.
    =====================================================================================
    If the hosts then show up again after we have changed the password, we have problems with Software on the Mac:
    In this event, the bad news is that you might have some software installed on your Mac which is connecting/allowing your to connect to remote hosts (almost certainly not Fon hosts). It may possibly allowing remote hosts to connect to your machine. Is VPN software installed?
    First of all check the information on those remote hosts:
    Press cntrl and also left click on each of the hosts in the Finder. Navigate to Get Info. See if it says anything (I suspect it won't but it might give us some clues).
    Check whether you have VNC installed:
     Finder->Applications->(Real or Open or Tight)VNC.
     Remove it unless you use VNC to connect to remote machines.
    If it were me and my Mac, I'm afraid I would reinstall OS X (after backing up all my data from /Users onto a USB/Firewire drive), because something fishy is happening at this point and my machine is connecting to who knows what where.
    =======================================================================================
    Hope this helps. My opinion is that the machines will show up after you have changed the Wireless password. I suspect you have some Remote Viewing Software installed which is finding and allowing you to connect to remote Macs.

  • How come I can't see other computers anymore?

    I used to be able to see other computers in my area, in the finder window, now I can't anymore. On any of my Apple computers.

    BobHarris wrote:
    Does clicking on the oval in the upper right corner change anything?
    That just makes the window smaller, removes the right and top panels
    Have you enabled/played with the System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall?
    I didn't touch it, it's the same settings as it was before.
    Are the other computers in your home? Are they neighbors? Office co-workers?
    I have two other computers in my home, and they used to be listed, now they're not. Also when I take my Macbook Pro to school, I use to get a list of about 15 other computers in one of my classes, now I get none listed.
    How are these other computers connected? Wifi (make/model of base station), Ethernet (switch, hub, router), over the Internet (cable, DSL, ...)?
    All Wi-Fi
