Not all files work in log and transfer

Hoping maybe someone has found a fix to this issue...
When editing an HDV project not all my .m2t files (all in the same folder) want to transfer using Log and Transfer.  Most of the files will transfer correctly but sometimes it skips a file and puts a red exclamation mark in the status.  Not sure why most files work and a few don't when they are all from the same folder and from the same shoot.  The files will open fine in other 3rd party apps so the files are ok.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Mike

FCP may be a bit more discriminating on the file structure or header integrity, dunno, never shot HDV myself but we've seen similar posts for years. Try copying the files to your drive first and then ingesting.
Side note, ust because other apps can open the files doesn't mean they are intact or useable. You don't mention what these apps are but if you can export form them, do that and then ingest the new file which might have all of its glitches reparied to suit FCP.

I cannot import my AVCHD files by using log and transfer. I can see all the files, but when I add the file to import que it doesnt work, the status is a red and says that its no data. I have tried with different cards and different cardreaders, but it is still the same. Why?!

Please give us more specific information -
What make/model camcorder are you using?
Are you absolutely certain this is AVCHD video?  Tell us more about the video settings you used in the camcorder (eg, frame size, frame rate, quality level)
Why are you attempting Log & Transfer from a card reader instead of from your camcorder?  Have you tried doing Log & Transfer from your camcorder?
Are the SD cards straight from the camcorder, unaltered, or are you just using the cards as storage?

  • Device not working with Log and Transfer in FCP

I am trying to get some footage off my camera into final cut pro, but Final Cut Pro does not recognise my device when I try to use Log & Transfer
The camera is question is a Cannon Legria FS20, here is a link
    http://www.canon.co.uk/ForHome/Product_Finder/Camcorders/flash_memory/LEGRIAFS20/
I have looked around but can't seem to find any plug-ins to get it to work with Final Cut Pro, does anyone know any way I can get it to work with Log and Transfer
Upon inspecting the hard drive, it saves video files in .MOD format with an .MOI file (which i assume is a metadata file
How can I get it so that my device works with log and transfer?
    Thanks

    Hi -
I did a little Google searching for information on your camera and it appears that it is a Standard Definition Camera that records in the MPEG-2 format.
Log and Transfer only works with High Definition material.
You will need to convert your video clips into a format that will work with FCP.
I know nothing about working in PAL, but you want to download an free application called MPEG Streamclip from
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
This application will convert your MPEG-2 files into a format that you can use directly in FCP.
Once you have converted the files to Apple DV-PAL, with the correct frame rate (25fps?) and field dominance you can either simply drag the converted files into FCP or import them using File > Import.
    Hope this helps.

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.
Want a tutorial to walk you through the tapeless workflow in FCP? I have one. Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial You might know most of this, but watch it for other tips.

  • Audio Drops on QT Files After P2 Log and Transfer

I'm using Log and Transfer to convert my P2 data into editable QuickTimes; however, for some reason, my rendered QuickTime files loose their audio at some point. I say, "Some point," because it's not at a specific timecode. It's different for each clip. Some maintain the audio for 80% of the clip while others might be 30%. I know the audio is there because I can hear throughout the entire length of each clip in the Log and Transfer window. Any idea what's happening during the render to QuickTime process?

Possible quick fix -won't hurt to try it.
    Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.

  • Log and Transfer Window unable to access all the files that were stored a P2 card

I have a 64gb P2 card that was filled to capacity (63.09gb) on a recent shoot with a Panasonic HPX170 camcorder.  An addlitional 16gb card was in the second slot.
I transferred the files from the 64gb P2 card to my iMac as usual, and did not see any files to transfer on the second card.  When accessing those files in FCP 6.0 I only see part of the files with the last one listed as "incomplete".  Four files that I see in the P2 card transfer folder do not show up in the Log and Transfer.   The LASTTEXT Clip file was transferred with a 3:07pm time, the inaccessible files end with a 3:06pm time.
I have the original 64gb P2 card in tact so I re-transferred all contents to my computer and into a new folder.   When I opened a new project to see if I could access all the files, only the files I previously was able to access came up.
Have I created a FCP Log and Transfer and just need to reset something in FCP?  Is there a way to recover the data/restore a path to the data via FCP so I can access all the  files or is that a Panasonic issue?

Oy,  If it's the second or first half of a spanned clip that's missing, FCP will not import, and the camera cannot repair.  There is nothing to repair, according to the camera. Files are just missing.
There are third party MXF software options that allow FCP to import the P2 files natively, without converting to QT.  I wonder if they will see the MXF files, or if they too need the complete file to do so.  I think most have demos.
    Calibrated Softare has MXF import:
    http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/products.asp
    Then there's MXF4Mac:

    And Raylight.

  • Canon HF11 not showing up in log and transfer window

I am using FC Studio 6.0.6 and a Canon HD USB camera. The camera does not show up in the log and transfer window. It shows up on the desktop, works with iMovie '09 but not FCP. If I try to select files from the camera they are greyed out. Strange thing is is that it works fine on my iMac just not my MBP. I have trashed the FCP and Quicktime preferences but this did not help. HELP please.

I also am wondering what you mean by "file structure"? Do you mean the AVCHD files or something in FCP?
    If you look for a particular file on a drive, there's a file structure or "path" to get to it. For instance;
Macintosh HD > Users > Nick > Documents > FCP > Projects > My latest project.
If I don't follow that path, I won't get to the file I am looking for.
Similarly, Final Cut Pro is expecting to see a certain path to the actual video files on your camera's Flash drive. If a folder name along the way is missing or had it's name changed, the path is no longer valid.

  • Log and Transfer: FCE4 won't recognize files from my camera

    Hi ...
I have a Sony XHR-NX5U and am capturing video on an optional Sony 128GB hard drive built for this camera. I've shot AVCHD video in both 1080/60i HQ and 1080/60i FX formats, and the camera produces video files in an MTS format (nestled in a series of folders), along with accompanying CPI files (I don't know what these are for).
My FCE4 program doesn't allow me to either import these files or use log/transfer. I've been forced to buy an external program to convert the MTS files into MOV files and then import these (Log and Transfer still won't recognize these MOV files).
What can I do to get FCE4 to recognize and allow the files directly from my camera?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
    - matt

I see your camera can be switched to record a bunch of ways.
    Try this one:
    AVCHD FH (17Mbps) 1920x-1080/60i
It should work with Log and Transfer over USB.
Also make sure you start a New Project in FCE with the Easy Setup AVCHD-Apple Intermendaite Codec1920 x 1080i60 selected and active.
Some cameras do not seem to transfer if mixed media is on the card. Try a test with the above media ONLY on the card.

  • Log and Transfer problem with MXF files

Hi, folks.  I've spent an hour searching the threads, but I haven't found an answer to my problem (or anyone who's had the same problem).  Please help if you can!
We're using the Canon XF300 and we tested some footage a couple weeks ago.  We ingested it into Final Cut Pro (7.0.3) using Log and Transfer (after installing the Canon plugin) and it all came through perfectly.  Worked without a problem.
Now, we have a week's worth of field footage, captured exactly the same way, transferred to the same hard drive, exactly the same as the test footage...
See what I'm getting at?  EVERYTHING has been done the same.  Identical.
And yet the new footage is not being recognized in the Log and Transfer window.
    Instead, this is what's happening:
What gives?  Everything we're doing is identical to the testing we did a couple weeks ago.  Like I said, I've searched the forums, read a couple dozen threads, followed the Creative Cow link mentioned in several of them.  I must be missing something.  Please fill in the gap for me.  Thank you!
Like I said before, we've downloaded the Canon plugin, imported test footage at ProRes 422, watched it, edited it, enjoyed it.  But now our new footage is unrecognizable by FCP.  And the directory structure is identical to that of the test footage.
    Sigh...

    UPDATE --
The field producers transferred the footage incorrectly.  They left off the master directory and went in 1 directory too far.
Yes, David, the frame rate was all the same (30p).
Russ... I imagine you were going to say something along the lines of "MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE ENTIRE DIRECTORY."  Leave nothing behind.
Now... the question is... can I create a new CONTENTS folder and simply drag the CLIPS folder into it?

  • Log and Transfer slower in FCP 7?

    Hi,
Here at my job, we often work with the RED camera. As a workflow, we use Log and Transfer to convert all red files into Apple Pro Res. We used to work with FCP 6.0.6 and when we did, 1 hour of footage took 2h (3h max!!) to convert. This week though, we upgraded to Final Cut Studio 3 (thus upgrading to FCP 7.0.1) and the conversion time increased dramatically!
It's not rare for Directors to use the full 4k resolution with that camera. But for that project, he only used the 2k and 3k resolutions. So I started to Log and Transfer and came back 3 hours after that and not even 1/3 of the batch was converted! What I didn't know with the new version, is that it automatically converts in Apple Pro Res 4444, instead of Apple Pro Res 4:2:2 (HQ), as it did before. So I did some tests. I took 10 minutes of footage and tried to convert them in:
Test #1 - Apple Pro Res 4444 *highest quality possible*
Test #2 - Apple Pro Res (proxy) *lowest quality possible, for offline*
Test #3 - Apple Pro Res (HQ) *2nd to best quality possible*
And to my surprise, those 3 tests gave me the same results. For 10 minutes of footage, the conversion took 1h08 (Actually, 1h08 for test #1, 1h06 for test #2 and 1h07 for test #3). That means that for 1 hour of footage, you'd need at least 6 hours of conversion time! This is crazy. And it's not because we have bad computers... we have Mac Pros, dual quad-cores with 8gb of ram in them. I mean, it takes less time to convert the red files into .mxf files for Avid (approx. 4h for 1 hour of footage)!
So my question is: Why the heck would it take longer to convert Red files with the Log and Transfer tool in the latest version of Final Cut Pro?
    Thank you,
    André

    Yes, exactly like this one

  • Log and Transfer problem with Canon DSLR

I have not been able to make Log and Transfer work with my canon 5D mrk II files. I can import the files or even drag and drop them into FCE but never have been able to get them to come in using log and transfer function. I have tried every kind of file conversion using quicktime Pro and MPEG StreamClip. Does anyone have a way of getting their files into FCE using this function?
All I ever get is this error:
"DCIM" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My file structure from the chip is: /DCIM/100EOS5D/MVI_**.mov (and also) MVI_**.thm

have you loaded the canon plug in for final cut? this may be the simplest way for you to get those files into FCP.

  • Log and transfer--sony ex1

hi, just shot with ex-1.  all stuff from the sxs card now on external hard drive. i downloaded the XDCAM transfer 2.12, rebooted and yet when i go into log and transfer and navigate to the folder, it says unsupported media. any ideas??? thanks

Don't know. I have been using XDCam transfer ever since we switched to XDCam and EX cameras.
That is the way it works for me. XDCam Transfer has all the functionality of Log and Transfer, you can trim clips and rename them, etc. prior to ingest. The native EX and XDCam are not directly supported in FCP. You need to have the EX files into a format that is supported by FCP, and XDCam transfer does that.
It works well and fairly quickly.

  • Log and Transfer with Panasonic HD

Recently I purchased the Panasonic HDC-HS 100, which is a hybrid SD card/HDD, (AVCHD). I use the Mac OS X (10.4.11) with Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. I am having problems importing my footage onto my computer. When opening the log and transfer window in FCP, it does not recognize the camera (error messages indicate there is an invalid directory structure). Also, the media has been saved to my computers hard drive. How do I get this footage on my computer so I can start editing! Thanks for the help.

Do you have an external card reader? Or are you playing back from the camera? When you copied the contents of the card to the computer, did you copy the whole card, or just the video clips? You have to copy the ENTIRE card, as is. Create a folder on your external hard drive and name it P2(name of project)#. So if you have 3 cards you used for the project "My Haircut" you would have 3 folders named
    P2myHaircut-1
    P2myHaircut-2
    P2myHaircut-3
That is just a sample naming scheme. You can use what you want, just be consistent so you can find your footage easily. Then, mount your SD card on the desktop, open it, select all, and drag to the appropriate folder. Make sure you select all. Then, open Log and Transfer, go to the upper right corner of the Log and Transfer browser and click on the drop down button. You will see a choice that says Create Custom Path. Click that, then locate the Folder you just created. Click once on that folder and then "choose". DON'T choose the internal folders, just choose your P2myHaircut# folder. You should see your clips pop up in that browser. If this doesn't work, you may be missing a component for that camera. Honestly, I don't know anything about your camera, but that is the process for Log and Transfer.

  • Log and Transfer window doesn't recognize Samsung SC-HMX20

The camera does appear on the desktop however, so I can navigate to the video folder on the camera and upload the video files to my computer, which I can then edit in FCE.
    Is this the correct workaround?
Also, anyone working with this camera (I shoot at 1080/30p) and FCE?
Would appreciate any comments on your particular workflow in FCE - from getting your footage off the camera, to what settings you use in FCE.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for replying, but I don't think that this is the issue (the files play back fine on the camera - also I can manually move them from the camera storage into fce - it's the Log and Transfer function that won't recognize my camera).
As a side note, when I use the Log and Transfer function, I get an error message that reads: Warning - "Video" (+the folder on the camera that has my video files+) contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media"
I suppose if someone could explain that error message in plain english then I might get somewhere ...

  • Log and transfer metadata

    Hi
I am ingesting into FSsvr using log and transfer. I am using the media metadata set with the addition of the FCP log and capture fields.
When I ingest clips i find that some of them (randomly it seems) do not appear to have the log and transfer metadata attached.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi
thanks for getting back to me.
No, the metadata is only being logged as i ingest the clip using log and transfer. I click the clip, log my data in and hit the button which adds the clip to the queue.
I have been working on a solution and the following seems to work:
-log and transfer all my clips adding the metadata as I go
-verify all the clips are in the project bin - save the project locally
-verify all clips are inside the newly created production in the FCserver catalogue - some will have viewable metadata others, for some reason, do not!
-drag and drop the FCP project into the production on FCserver, bring it in.
-double click the FCP project and double click an asset within it (these should be automatically associated by bringing in the FCP project which was saved after LandC)
-click on the 'final cut pro logging' tab - the Metadata should be here, even if it isnt viewable on the asset itself - i.e before it was catalogued relevant to the FCP project.
This isnt ideal, but its a kind of work around for the time being.
i'm going to look into mapping my own metadata.
    Thanks
    Dan
