Not auto detecting wifi out of clamshell mode

I have a MacBook Air and when opening my laptop out of clamshell mode my wifi will not auto detect the closest connection point. The current work around is to right click and select the appropriate connection. While this is ok, I would really like the auto detect to work properly.
I do have the automatic find selected in Network Preferences.
Looking for any solutions.
Thanks.

Unless you get that WRT54G for free or next to free, pass on it and pick up an old apple WAP off eBay or similar site. Like you my iPad has a connectivity problem with the WRVS4400N running iOS 4.2.1, where it didn't have trouble with iOS 3.2.2 and ran fine for five months.
My solution at the office was to spur a second router off my DSL router just for the iPad. The first was a WRT54G that had to be set to only one 802.11 protocol to keep the iPad reliably connected, but swapped it out for an old airport extreme that I kept on after testing it to be good. With a home network like you describe, I would run a subnet off the WRVS4400N just for iPad using an apple WAP (the configuration app for Windows is easy to use).
Good luck.

  • HELP! BIOS not auto detecting

Well have my new MSI P965NeoF V2. With the Intel E7200 and a G7200 Nvidia card.. 2 gigs of memory.
The problem I am having is , the system will not auto detect the Maxtor 80 Gig or my Quantem DVD player in BIOS. It will detect both of them and actually boot from the Maxtor.. But the xp version I have on the system is bad, so I will have to restore....
The system will not "See" or acknowledge my dvd payer with the xp cd in it...
Have tried running a 98 boot disc to try and get access to the DVD , have changed the DVD to a CD rom drive I had laying around... Nothing seems to work.. What is up?
both these drives are the IDE drives. I have disabled the SATA functions for now. (In the future will get SATA Devices)
Cabling and jumper settings are correct..
    SO what do I do?
    Corey

Do/did you have HDD on primary IDE and ODD on secondary IDE? How old are the ribbon cables? If they have been taken off & put back in too many times you may need to use new ones. I have had to replace them in the past for that reason as they ended up being no good after too many times in & out. And yes I would get SATA HDD. I'm not sure about yours but most of the older MBs won't suppoert SATA ODDs.

  • Wifi signal in clamshell mode with Airport Express

    Hi
I'm planning on buying an Airport Express but I'm using my Macbook Pro 2009 in clamshell mode connected to an external monitor.
Will the signal with the lid closed be as good as with an open lid?
Apple doesn't mention anything concerning wifi signal in clamshell mode.
I really wouldn't want to use it with and open lid.
    Thanks in advance

Running it once a week on battery is enough?
You could unplug the AC and the external display from it once a week, run the battery down to nothing, and recharge it all the way. But that wouldn't be ideal, because deep discharges like that are much harder on the battery than partial discharges. Using the machine on battery power for an hour or two every day or two, with those partial discharges and recharges adding up to about a cycle per week, is easier on the battery.
Shouldn't there be a way to tell the macbook to run on current only?
If you mean on AC power only, there's no need to tell it to do that. It does that without being told, whenever the AC power adapter is connected and the machine isn't drawing more power than the AC adapter can provide. On the very rare occasions when you are working the machine so hard that it draws more power than the adapter can supply, it draws the necessary additional power from the battery without being told to do so.
The issue is that if the battery is never used (which might very well be true if the MBP were always kept in clamshell mode), the battery deteriorates much faster than it would if it got regular light exercise. If you don't really need a portable computer and are just interested in minimizing the footprint of a computer on your desk, consider getting an iMac or a Mac Mini instead of the MBP. You'll save a lot of money and have no battery to worry about.

  • MFEFX1 not auto-detected on SLM224P-G5

I have been fighting with a pair of Linksys switches, on and off over the past days. What I want to do is very simple, uplink two swtiches via a Fiber connection.
I have been supplied with equipment, which on paper is compatible, but in reality seems incompatible.
    I have:
    - 2 x MFEFX1
    - 1 x SLM224P-G5
    - 1 x SRW224G4
    - (also a SRW224P - aparently after some digging listed as incompatible with the MFEFX1)
I have upgrade the firmware on the SRW224G4 to 1.2.2b to support the MFEFX1.
    I have Firmware 1.0.1 on the SLM224P, listed as auto-detecting the MFEFX1.
According to the (now seemingly unavalable) document: "Linksys100M-SFP-SwitchSupport-noteV1.3.pdf" all the above should now be supported.
I have updated the port configuration on the SRW224G4, and this shows "100M-ComboF" and seems to be OK.
On the SLM224P, however, I see the port as a "1000M-ComboF" and the link stays down.
I see a led light-up on the SRW224G4 for the connection, but nothing else.
At this point I wish that I was supplied with the Gigabit Fiber modules that seem to be more compatible with the various switches (including our SRW224P - that detects the MFEFX1 as a 1000M-ComboF device. I tried this before finding the above 'compatibility' document).
Can anyone supply me with some information so that I can get this fiber connection working? Trying to set any options on the SLM224P to tell it to use only a 100M connection gives an error about this being a 1G port and so can only run a 1G speed.
    Thanks for any help

    aponikikay, thanks for the feedback.
The document linked is the quick-start guide that came printed with the miniGBIC. I did see that list. It looks like the other document (Linksys100M-SFP-SwitchSupport-noteV1.3.pdf) might not be so acurate.
I am going to have the SLM switch replaced by a SRW224G4P that is listed as supported. I just wonder why I was supplied with the one set of equipment in the first place...

  • IBook not auto-detecting my external displays any more

I have an iBook G4 which has recently stopped auto-detecting the addition or removal of external displays (both tv and my external monitor). Forcing detection using the system preferences still works. Anyone have any ideas as to how I might fix this problem?
    Thanks

Plug the drive into your computer
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on your drive on the left side of the window and then click Repair Disk at the lower right hand corner of the main window
It may take 30-45 minutes for this to complete. Then try the drive again at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. Be sure to power everything off when you do this and restart things one at a time.
If that does not help, your last resort is to plug the drive into your computer again and open Disk Utility again. This time click Repair Disk Permissions. Then try again.
Are you trying to use Time Machine with the drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme?

  • Faces not auto-detecting

Faces frequently fails to auto-detect faces in photos. I have several pictures where the initial scan produces no faces to be named, even when the faces in the pictures are front-on and unobscured.
On the other hand, I frequently get 'faces' auto-detected on things like peoples arms, legs, speaker grills, etc.
Is this an indication of a problem with Faces, or is it par for the course?
    Thanks!

Thanks, that was what I was afraid of. In general, Faces is excellent. As you said though, it is far from perfect.

  • Sleep not working with external screen in clamshell mode

I have my macbook with Lion operating in clamshell mode with an external display connected as the main screen.
Although I have set the computer to sleep after 10mins, this never happens and I have to sleep the computer manually every time.
If I disconnect the external display, or open my Mac and work with both screens, the computer does sleep properly after the set time.
I can't seem to find the fix anywhere, and the people in the mac store couldn't help me either.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thx,

How to disable the closed-clamshell mode?
I think, this is what you're looking for ... maybe you want to uproot that question.

  • HP Photosmart 6520 not printing when coming out of "sleep" mode

A few months ago I bought an HP Photosmart Model 6520 e-All In One printer.  It has never performed properly and I've tried everything I can think of to fix it.
When in "Sleep" mode (how I wish you could just stop it from "sleeping"!!) it seems to just quit.  If I send something to the printer and it is in sleep mode, sometimes it will wake up and after a LONG wait print.  However, most of the time it will inform me that the printer can't communicate with the computer.  At this point I can sometimes get it to print after completely rebooting the printer, sometimes several times.  There have been times that even doing this won't work and I have to delete everything in the que and reboot the printer and hurry to get whatever it was I needed printed back into the que.
There have been times that nothing I did would work.  I would end the day and leave things in the printer que.  Next day, after turning the printer back on..everything starts to print.  Well at this point, whatever I needed printed isn't needed anymore.
Waiting even several minutes for this printer to respond is crazy and waiting hours is not acceptable period!!  I have no idea why you are not given the option of keeping the printer from "sleeping" at all.  If the option is available, there should be some way to opt out of using it.

These settings are for setting up your wireless printer to stay connected to your router, keep wireless devices better connected and makes your router secure and hack proof.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual). This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here (Windows solution 4, static IP).
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off/Sleep' is disabled and/or the System Mode Time Out is set to zero (0). Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS). Also check your Printers Properties.
    3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
    4. If needed and you assigned a static IP address, try using 8.8.8.8 for the Preferred DNS server and 8.8.4.4 at the Alternate DNS server.
    5. Verify the printer is on the latest firmware by checking with the HP Support site.
In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)
    1. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    2. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    3. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    4. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    5. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same, they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    6. SSID broadcast must be enabled.
    7. Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins. Power on router wait 2 mins.
    8. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
Windows 7/8/8.1 Is Network Discovery on or off?
    1. Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings.
    2. Under Home or Work (current profile) / Network Discovery.
    3. Select "Turn on network discovery" and save changes.

  • Firewire/1394 devices are not auto-detected with k8n neo4 platinum

I am unable to detect firewire/1394 devices to my PC through my K8N Neo4 Platinum. That is, I plug in the device through the firewire port and windows doesn't detect that a device has been plugged in.
    I have tried:
-2 firewire devices, both are Canon digital camcorders (ZR10 and ZR25MC)
    -2 different firewire cables
-reinstalling windows, got all windows updates except
(Microsoft Base Smart Card Cryptographic Service Provider Package: x86 (KB909520))
    -patch from microsoft, discussed here
    (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81749.0)
-both firewire devices using both cables connect just fine to a test computer
-both my computer and the test computer have Windows XP Pro SP2
Windows doesn't make the noise "bah-dum" that it has detected a device, nor does it display the dialog that gives me options of what programs to use. Once in a while, if I leave it connected for a while and come back, windows will eventually find it...or windows might bog down and get really slow. It speeds up again instantly once I unplug the firewire device. Strange, I know. Also there are NO conflicts in device manager.
    Could it be?:
    -bios misconfiguration
-need to use an older chipset driver (i am using most recent from nvidia.com)
-onboard audio or front audio needs to be disabled
-the k8n neo4 platinum simply has connection problems with some firewire devices
    (i hope not)
    Bob

    Built2Last: (good questions!)
I tried your suggestion by removing PCI cards and made FURTHER progress. I found out that my firewire card, the Syba NEC1394-P3, has some compatibility issues with my other PCI cards. I found this out because:
    1. it worked fine after I placed it in a non-comm (orange) slot and removed my soundcard (X-Fi) and Belkin wireless modem, and
    2. a tech support representative from Syba told me that that particular firewire card has compatibility issues
    Quote
Also, SD-NEC-4F is our older model firewire card.
Our new firewire card (SD-PCI-4F) is using VIA VT6306 chipset and no customer complain about any installation issue so far.
If the SD-NEC-4F still giving you trouble, I'll suggest you to return it and exchange for the SD-PCI-4F firewire card.
At least he is honest and wants to help, so I remain impartial towards Syba.
So I figured out the firewire card, but not the onboard firewire. Ok, but check this out! When the Syba card was working, I could plug in BOTH the external hard drive AND either of the Canon camcorders to the Syba firewire card. Windows all three devices just fine. Again, the onboard firewire would ONLY detect JUST the external hard drive, but would not detect either of the Canon camcorders. It seems as though the ball again is knocked back into MSI's court on this issue. Any ideas?
    syar2003:
As for drivers, I checked for drivers for: onboard firewire, add-in firewire card, and Canon camcorders.
-I cannot find where there is an MSI firewire driver for my onboard firewire port. I originally guess that it was part of my chipset driver installer, but the README doesn't say anything about it. It is also not an additional download on MSI's website. But since it detects an external hard drive I figure I must already have it.
-The add-in firewire card does not have drivers. I repeat, they do not exist. The manual and Syba's website both state that drivers for the card are included all versions of Windows back to Windows 98.
-Canon's website has a driver/software download page but it also appears that drivers do not exist for the Canon camcorders.
Yes the camcorder is set to VCR mode.
Yes the IEEE1394 is correctly installed, since external hard drive connects okay.
I tried two DV cables and both are connected fine.
The camcorders do not support USB as far as I can see, and if they do, I'm not using it.

  • External (thunderbolt) display not working at all when in clamshell mode

I have a brand new macbook pro (2014).  With a thunderbolt display and external keyboard/mouse attached, I use the computer as a 'desktop' all the time (lid closed).  Always worked fine, until I upgraded to Yosemite.  Now, either the machine doesn't boot at all, OR (even more strangely), it takes many minutes to boot up, and the animation of fades and also the mouse cursor jump around extremely slowly--the interface is completely unusable and I have to open the display and manually force a shutdown by holding the power button down.  Without an external monitor attached, everything seems to work just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this, and has anyone found a work around?
    Thank you,
Frustrated with Apple's apparent software quality decline,

If there's anyone out there that can help please...
I am running the latest firmware on the TBD and all software is up to date as you can see.

  • MacBook will not display on external monitor in clamshell mode

    System information:
    13 in. MacBook (2.4Ghz Intel 2-Core)
    10.6.7
External Display connected with Apple DisplayPort VGA adapter
    Apple Wireless Keyboard
Generic wireless mouse that connects to a USB stick plugged into the MacBook
This is dirving me nuts because it was working perfectly until about 2 weeks ago. I was following the pocess outlined here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131
    Here is what happens now:
MacBook display and external monitor are in mirroring mode. All devices are powered on and plugged in.
Close MacBook lid. MacBook goes to sleep. Blinking LED.
Hit spacebar on the Apple Bluetooth keyboard. The LED changes to steady on. However, the external display never shows the desktop. I've tried Command-F1... nothing.
If I open the lid again... the MacBook goes back to sleep.
I then have to pull out the DisplayPort VGA adapter to wake the MacBook up again.

You could try resetting the SMC and see if that helps.

  • Laptops not reporting when coming out of sleep mode

Currently I have set my schedule so that Laptops inventory on a weekly basis. Our users will routinely place their laptops in sleep mode at the end of the day instead of turning them off due to the long log-in times in the mornings. When the user reconnects in the morning their network connections are restored and they continue on as normal. The problem is ZAM thinks that the device is NOT connected to the network and is unable to inventory it according to its schedule. Once the user does a complete reboot then ZAM is fine until the next time the device is placed in sleep mode.
I believe the problem is due to ZAM holding onto the old IP address and not seeing the device when it connects through the newly acquired IP address.
Is there something to that can be changed in the manager that I have not found yet? Any suggestions?

I doubt that. As I said, this doesn't match my results, and of course I
*do* acquire a new IP, in fact in my case it's even three of them
(local, home, VPN). What makes you think that's the case?

    Right.

    No, it does it automagically.
