Not being able to record

Question

I purchased an Inport recording device to be able to record music from devices such as a Cassette player. There were no problems in recording from external devices.
I used ICHAT for the first time. Since using ICHAT for the first time, I am not able to record into Garage Band. I also have a MACBook. The MACBook has not used ICHAT and will record from the cassette player.
Garageband shows using the Inport device but neither the mixer or sound show any activity.

That topic that was linked to contains the "first thing to try" but you don't mention whether you tried it or not.
Right click on the the little loudspeaker icon in the bottom right hand side of your screen.  Select "Recording Devices".  In the Recording Devices screen, put your cursor any place on the background, i.e. no device highlighted, then right click again.  You should get a menu with tick boxes offering "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices".  Put a tick in both boxes.
If your computer manufacturer took the easy way out and just disabled the facility, this should give you a source called "Stereo Mix" which will give you what you want.
If you don't get that, blame the manufacturer.
Like Ryclark, I don't know of any free way around this, but another direction to try is some software called Virtual Audio Cable available from http://download.cnet.com/Virtual-Audio-Cable/3000-2168_4-10067766.html .  Again, not free but you can do a trial before paying to make sure it works.
