Not burning at 16x

I'm having issues with my internal NEC 3550A and LG GSA-H10N. I've updated the firmware for each to the most currrent. But at 16x burn, I'm only getting up to 9x on the first 35 sec of burning then starts to drop down and settle at about 5x. I've used Maxell, Fuji, Imation, Sony, and Philips 16x DVD-R media. And all are testing at that speed.
I've tested the burn speed on these drives using Toast 8, and MBBench. My older Mac G4 had the same NEC 3550A, and it burned at a much faster rate. That's how I first noticed the slower speed on these drives.
Using Toast to test time on burning. On the older G4 it would take about 3.5 - 4 min to burn a full 4GB DVD at 16x. The burners on G4 MDD says it will take about 4 min, but actually takes about 10 min.
But ripping a full 4GB DVD, burning CD-R at 48x, and reading DVDs is all within normal parameters. And I don't think I've ever had a bad burn (maybe one) under "16x" burn option.
I've read about the drives might be set to PIO mode rather than DMA. Not sure what these are, but the explanation of the switching between modes made sense. Just wondering how this can be done on a Mac.
G4 MDD Dual 1GB, 1.5GB ram, LG DVD-RW + Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   80GB, 120GB, 2x 250GB HDs, Radeon 9000 128MB

There are so many variables with the various makers, that it just may well be a lack of native support for the brands in question, or, that the drives are somehow optimized to work faster under Windows.
I am partial to Pioneer. I've always had good luck with them, and my current DVR-109 burns consistently at 12x. I haven't flashed it, or changed the IDE cable to a 80/40 yet, but have read of good success at the 16x that it is rated for.
My DVR-110 (with Patchburn 3) in my Dual 450 Gigabit Ethernet, also is a stellar performer. I get 16x peaks, and average around 12x on most burns, Dual layer at 8x has produced no coasters.
The DVR-111 (8x DL, 16x DVD-R/+R) is supposed to be a nice device as well. I opted for the 109 (slower at 6x DL), instead, because of the lack of region encoding on the 109 (also only $29 at OWC).
I'm currently toying with the idea of putting the IDE cable in (my Sawtooth), and changing out for a Pioneer DVR-112D- 18x plus LabelFlash (Lightscribe). They are available here in Japan, but the labeling software is Japanese, and, though I can read Japanese fairly well, I'll wait till the US/EU version hits the market, and the English version of the utility is downloadable. But, I digress.....
You might (if you haven't) take a browse through the xlr8yourmac data base, and see if there are any similar user experiences with a similar Mac, or also check out what seems to be working for others.

  • DVD not burning at 16X

I just replaced the original CD-R with an LG 16X DVD-R in the G4 800 at work.
Unfortunately it's not recording at 16X, only at 8X. I don't think it's the media, as it states it can be recorded at 16X, and I burned several ones already. Toast 7 indicates that it can burn at 16X, but as soon as the disk is inserted it goes to "best" and it takes 15min to record a full 4.7GB disc.
Could the ATA 66 of the drive be holding back the speed ?
I have a ATA TEMPO 133 PCI card. Would it be recognized by the OS if I connected the disk to it ?
    Thanks in advance

    Pedro,
They burn at 16X (in Theory), they only reach "up to" 16X on certain parts of the disc. It sounds like your drive needs updated firmware to recognize the actual brand of media you're trying to use. My G4 actually burns at the 16X speeds and it's my G5 that lags big time (on certain brands)because of firmware. Todays recorders have a true average of about 12X. It also may be your HDD is not pumping the data fast enough through the pipes or it can be a faulty cable as well. It can be one of several things and I'd start with the cable, check it for any punctures or small tears and make sure it's connected securely on both ends. After that make sure your HDD is in good working order, run some good utilities such as Disk Warrior, Tech Tool or Drive Genius so you can be sure your directories and structures of your disk are OK. Try running Apple's hardware test (shipped with the computer) and see if the Logic Board and everything else passes.

  • 16x Disks not burning at 16x

I purchased some Verbatum 16x DVD-R disks that are printable. I tried to burn them with DVD Studio Pro and it only burned at 4x. I then tried to burn some files with Toast and it would only let me select 4x as my max speed.
What is the matter? Should I try another brand? Or should I take my drive to Apple for repair?
    Kevin Hawkins

Some manufacturers drives "don't like" certain media. Also 16X is a theoretical max write speed that is highly unlikely to happen in the real world ( sustained speed at least ).
Check for a firmware update from the manufacturer that may improve media compatability. Failing that try another brand of media ( though Verbatim is a well respected brand ).
Actually getting 16X would be like an aircraft carrier doing 45 knots, it could happen if...( the carrier )
    1. glass like calm seas
    2. strong tail wind
    3. Swift surface current
    4. Pushing engines beyond military power ( 104% of rated power )
    16X drive....
    1. Ideal "perfect" 16X rated media ( hint: they ain't perfect )
    2. Hyper stabilized power to laser
    3. 100% efficent buffer system
    4. Super alignment optimised optics
    5. complete vibration isolation
Once you get to 18X and 20X drives you are talking strictly Burst rates only applicable to certain limited zones.

    Hi

  • IDVD will only burn to 16X discs and not 8X

I replaced my original superdrive with a pioneer DVR-100 because it can burn at 16X speed and dual layer. Now, iDVD will only burn to 16X discs. When I try to use 8X discs I get an error message. iDVD will begin to write, the disc will spin up twice, then the disc is ejected. The really annoying thing is that it makes those discs unusable.
Any ideas how to fix this.

    What brand DVD-R?
I burn Verbatim DVD-R 16X at 4X all the time using a disk image and Toast (or Disk Utility). Try Verbatim. I use other brands too. In both of my "SuperDrives."
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E?

Is there a firmware update for burning at 16x with Matshita DVD-R UJ 845E? I'm trying to burn a DVD using iDVD on my iBook. The blank DVD's are Memorex 16x (I've used Memorex 8x successfully in the past), the DVD drive is specified above. The finder tells me that the drive has reported an error "sense key=medium error/ sense code=0x73, 0x03" I couldn't find firmware updates in either Panasonic Matshita or Apple websites. Am I forever confined to 8x DVD-R's with this laptop?

    First, welcome to the discussions.
Sorry, No Firmware update to allow you to burn at 16X.
The drive you have is only capable of burning at 8X.
You will also find that for the most part when you recieve errors that it is more often than not attributed to MEDIA.
There are so many problems with the cheaper media they are to numerous to cover.
DVD is not at all like CD burning, in that the technology as well as the Optical Drives used, seem to be touchy, and require the use of good Media. This will allow you trouble free burning without errors.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
You will also find that the reason that DVD-R Media works the best, is because it is the most wirely used and recognised in both Computers and Players.
If I may suggest. There are several 16X DVD's on the market.
Take your time and look at the back of the Jewel Cases and read. You will see that the better Media will tell you that it will burn at 1X through and including 16X, if your drive is capable of handleing these speeds. I prefer Maxell 16X DVD-R Media in the individual Jewel Cases. This Media burns at the slower speeds on the older Superdrives that will only burn at 1X or 2X.
Like many others I have learned my lessons the hard way.
    Cheers Don

  • One cd will not burn

All of my CDs that I import and burn are at least 12 yrs old. I use Staples generic 1x-52x CD-R. Burn is set at max possible( for my Superdrive that is 16x). I have no problem importing into iTunes 6 bunchanumbers. I burn by making a playlist and clicking Burn. I have found that one CD out of the six I have tried will import and play, but will not burn. I get the error message that says it can't and will not retry.
Is this due to some sort of burn copy protection on that particular disk, or should I change to 16x setting or lower, or use a different import setting for just that disk? I have looked thru numerous posts here and have not found any that are like this "one disk" problem. I doesn't seem to me that a copy protection would work this way. Would it work on an 8x or 4x setting?
The recording is for the "Tomato" label, mfg and dist by Rhino, artist is singer Helen Schneider with the Bob Brookmeyer big band, recorded in Germany.
I've burned lots of data and movie cds and dvds, but this is my first foray into making copies of some of my collection for friends using iTunes.
    B&W G3   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512 ram, iTunes 6++, 80GB

It's conceivable that something like that might have happened in Toast, but not in iTunes. I'm going to try to burn with one track missing from the playlist, at 4x and see what happens. ClonyXXL did not report any copy protection in red, so even though I don't read German without a dictionary at hand, I don't think its copy protected, it's something else. It's funny the CD was made in Germany , and Clony XXL is German, you'd think it would help me, and maybe it has, but i can't read the notes.

  • DR8P Not Recognizing TY03 16x Media Correctly

Please, can someone do something about it.. I just got Taiyo Yuden 16x media ..
i know, i know, it can burn at max 8x only. But I was hoping to burn the 16x media at 8x! Furthermore, the last firmware update as last september and I was under the impression that it would be recognized!
Please, can someone advise me whether a firmware update (if MSI decides to do so) can recognize such media? Or is my 100pcs dvd-r sayo nana?
Oh why did i not get the 8x one

    Hi.
I got similar problem, with 16x compatible DVDs. The only difference is that I can't burn at all. Nero reports: "Power calibration error" and "Illegal disc". I used Imation disks because the 8x compatible version worked very well with this driver, even thow I wrote all my disks at 4x. The 16x disks simply don't work at all. I tried other brands with no success.

  • New internal DVD drive does not burn at true speed

2 years ago, I bought a Pioneer 8x DVD/CD internal drive for my G4. The highest speed it burns at true 1 second to 1 second speed is 6x. When I select the 8x, every second that ticks off in Toast averages 2 to 5 seconds.
Fast forward to today! I just purchased and installed an NEC Model:_NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A, a 16x with dual layer capabilities.
I am having similar issues with the burn times. Not only are the seconds lasting 2-5 or more seconds but it gets down to about a minute left and I get a drive error message. I cannot succesfully burn at 16x even with speed issues. I tried it at 12x and 8x. I get a successful burn with 8x but each second lasts 2-4 seconds.
I downloaded the PatchBurn program and tried it with no improving results.
I looked at the NEC web site and all they offer for firmware is Windows based. Is there something that needs to be done to get the drive to burn actual 16x? OR is this an incompatibility issue between PCs and Macs?
I'd be happy to read your advice and suggestions.
    Thanks. Scott
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    NecFlash.
If your mac is not an MDD G4, you will never get 16X burns, as the ATAPI bus on older G4's does not support the transfer mode required.
Beyond that, 16X is max rated speed, not actual burn speed across entire burn process.
Make sure your version Toast is updated to last revision (5.2.3) (6.1.1), etc.,
WWJD's comments per disc space & fragmentation are also considerations when burning DVD's.

  • DVD+R not burning

I bought some TDK DVD+R s and they did not burn on my iMac G4 (running 10.4.6) They were 16x if that means anything. Thanx

    Hello, Chris,
    Welcome to the discussions.
I bought some TDK DVD+R s and they did not burn on my iMac G4 (running 10.4.6) They were 16x if that means anything.
Most of us think that other brands are better, Verbatim is one of the best.
DVD-R disks will usually play on more DVD players.
16x may be a bit fast for best burning. Try 8x or less.
Also, instead of wasting DVDs trying to get a burn, create a disk image on your desktop by choosing to 'save as disk image.' This will start the disk-burning process, but will end up with a disk image that is an exact copy of your project. You can view it with DVD player to ensure that the DVD will burn correctly. You can then burn DVDs using Disk Utility. See this for more information: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html

I can not burn a CD with my itunes anymore. It tells me to re download itunes. I have done that and still have the same problem. When I do try, Missing disc recorder keeps coming up. Please help!!!!

    Hello again, Stew.
Also when I open itunes it gives me a warning and says "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importingand burning cd's and dvds are missing. Please reinstall itunes."
With that one let's first try a reboot and repair.
Reboot the PC (very important), and the do a *repair install* of iTunes.
Go to your "Add or Remove Programs" control panel, select iTunes, click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Does iTunes launch without the error message now?
If no luck there, try checking for a device filter conflict in your registry:

  • Windows 7 does not recognize cd/dvd drive. Will not burn a disc

In November 2013, I  bought a refurbished hp Compaq 7900 convertible minitower, Product No. NJ3226UC#ABA, 32-bit.  Windows 7 and WMP 12 were installed by the company that refurbished it.   WMP's  play, rip, burn, sync worked perfectly.
I made the mistake of installing itunes.  I purchased music and made a playlist from my library and itunes.  I tried to burn the playlist with Memorex discs.  WMP burn would kick out the cd at 99% complete.  I tried a different brand of disc and had the same  problem.  The message each time was 'Windows Media Player Encountered an error while burning. Verify that the burner is connected properly and that the disc is clean and not damaged.'  I tried burning a disc using itunes burner but it didn't do anything.
First, I removed every Apple application from my computer.  Then I ran Microsoft CD/DVD trouble shooter.  It didn't correct the problem and gave me the message "cannot locate CD/DVD burner".  I ran trouble shooter in the Control  Panel selected System Security's, Find and Fix. Then Selected  Configure a Device .  Results were 'Hardware may not be detected try to do what you wanted to do again' I tried 2-3 times.  WMP would not burn.  Tried Apple for help and didn't want to reinstall itunes.  I reinstalled Quick Time.   Followed Microsoft's 5-step resolutions:
              1.  Used the troubleshooter in Control Panel.
              2.  Ran CD/DVD Fixit trouble shooter.
              3.  Manually fix corrupted registry.
              4.  Update or reinstall driver.
              5.  Create a sub registry key.
I tried to burn after every step and got the same result.it burned to 99% and kicked out. I used system restore back to May 15, 2014  thaat was before installing iTunes.  No burn.   Checked  driver and response was that 'Driver is working.  No problem was found'.    Today, ran Troubleshooter in ControI Panel and this was the messsage, 'Configuration Settings May Be Incorrect'.  How do I correct  this?  Help!  What next?

    Hi,
You were given some very good advice on your other post.  I ran into a very similar issue when I had installed iTunes and the end result was that I had to do a factory recovery back to a day one condition. Then I had to do a slow software installation process, checking every time I had installed a third party application.  I got tripped up a couple of times but determined that I had to install iTunes before installing other CD/DVD media programs (Roxio,WMP and Cyberlink).
Do a fresh OS installation without the extra third party software and then install Imgburn.  Then use Imgburn to determine the capabilities of your optical drive and match the media specifications those detected by Imgburn to the media type that you are using. Do not use cheap media as the firmware in your optical drive may not support it. I prefer to use Verbatim media. Now see if Imgburn will burn your optical media before attempting to install iTunes and other CD/DVD optical media programs.
