"Not Charging" Message

Hi:
I have several chargers, but for the last couple of months regardless of the one which charger I decided to use, when I plug one into my PowerBook G4 I see a "Not Charging" message at the top of the desktop for at least 5 minutes.
This is the location where I'm used to seeing the little charging symbol and the number of minutes until full charge, or the word "Charged", or, if running on battery, the number of minutes I have until the battery is discharged.
I've never seen this before. Is it common? Any thoughts about how to remove it? As mentioned, usually after five or so minutes the display switches to show that the battery is indeed charging. But once or twice with a very low battery it took a long time before the battery started charging and once the PowerBook wouldn't even start up despite being connected to the charger.
Any thoughts?

You know, I'm not even kidding, but I just noticed that myself by total coincidence. (People might think I make this stuff up, but I don't. Some of these problems people have, I find myself having prior to reading up on it. Though, not very often).
Here's my observation.
At work, where I primarily use this 15-inch machine, it is connected to my 65W AC adapter. I've never gotten a "Not Charging" message next to the battery icon (with plug icon inside... which would indicate connected to power source but battery not charging, thus the message, or the other which would say "Charged") when I plug in with the 65W.
However... where I just noticed the same "Not Charging" message on plug in, but it doesn't take five minutes to clear up is when I'm using a third party AC adapter that's rated 45W. It's a MacAlly charger for iBooks and PowerBooks.
My hypothesis is because of that recommedation--one which I've given myself many times (so then why am I going against it?)--that 45W chargers, even though they work, are not designed for the aluminum 15-inch PowerBook and the 17-inch models. The Titanium PowerBook G4 came with 45W chargers, as did the dual-USB iBook G3s and later iBooks. 12-inch PowerBooks came with 45W adapters as well.
Aluminum 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBook G4s use the 65W adapter and aptly so because the machine needs more juice in order to power the internals. Using a 45W adapter "works" but is not recommended because it can cause damage to the system and it doesn't get enough juice that it needs to draw from the adapter.
(To answer a comment, I rarely bring the PowerBook home, but if and when I do, my backup charger happens to be that 45W MacAlly adapter).
It's okay to use a 65W adapter on 12-inch PowerBooks, Titanium PowerBook G4s, and G3 & G4 iBooks that originally shipped with a 45W one.
So, after all that, my guess is that you may be using a 45W adapter with your 15-inch model and that may be the cause of the "Not Charging" message. Although, after all that as well, if you're using a 65W adapter, then it may be a glitch.
Then again, you may want to do this to solve the problem:

Is it normal for someone to have general diffuculty charging an ipad?  I see the "not charging" message even when I am using the charger and cord that came in the original box, plugged into a wall socket directly.  It is normal for me to plug it in overnight and to see no charge whatsoever the next day.  I have never had so much trouble using a friggin charger in my life.  It just seems to be exceedingly finicky.  What am I missing?

Charging your iPad should not be problematic. It should be an easy thing to do using the charger provided with your iPad connected to a known good wall outlet.
The charging problem you are experiencing is most like caused by:
    1. A faulty charger
    2. A faulty cable
    3. A bad wall outlet
    4. A problem in the iPad.
The first three of these are easiest to eliminate. Try a for ends charger and cable. Make absolutely sure your outlet is good. Try other outlets.
If the charger, cable and outlet a proven to be good then the problem lies in the iPad.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • V570 plugged in not charging message

I have my laptop v570 plugged in but i'm getting a plugged in not charging message i have it set to best battery health it's at 71% and not charging

    hi la321,
thanks for using Lenovo Community forums!
Best battery health setting will actually stop the charging to a specific point. and that is the message that will show up.
Can you try changing to Maximum battery life and restart the system see if it would still say that battery message.
    thanks

Hi folks, when I plug in my AC adapter the battery indicator in the upper right says "not charging" and then proceeds to charge.
I followed the steps in HT3964 including resetting the SMC to no avail.

    Hi Rod, thanks for responding.
The "not charging" message only appears for two seconds, then the light on the magsafe end turns amber and it indicates how much time I have until the battery is full.
Right now it says its charged.
I just unplugged the magsafe here is my battery info.

  • N80 Not Charging Message

    Hi
I have a Nokia N80 on the UK Orange network (contract upgrade).
I have had the phone since Monday 22nd May 2006, i have charged it twice and now when i plug in my charger a message comes up on the screen saying 'Not Charging' with a picture or a battery with a line through it, and the phone will not charge at all and has since turned off.
Any ideas what it is or is it a duff handset i have been sent, the firmware is: V3.0614.03 11-04-2006 Orange UK

The charger that came with my N80 only worked about half a dozen times before it died. Completely useless and - call it coincidence - I believe not covered by the warranty.
At home I use the charger from my 6320 with the adapater that came with the N80. When I'm out and about I have a 3rd party USB charger that cost me £5 and came with mains and car adapters. Works fine.
The new small charger thing is dire though: the connection is really flakey. I can see how it saves space in the phone, but if it don't work, it's not exactly an improvement.Message Edited by patc on 30-Apr-200710:20 AM

  • Toshiba Qosmio X505 plugged in, not charging message

I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505 that is almost 4 years old and have some power issues.  The battery is drained to about 6% and the battery icon in the tool bar has the plug symbol for a second then it goes away then comes back and goes away.... it keeps flashing like this.  When I move the mouse over the battery icon it says plugged in, not charging.  I have tried every solution I have found on line with no luck.  I have removed the battery and ac charger and then held the power button for 30 seconds, I have cleaned the connections, I have re-installed the battery about 10 times, I have rebooted all to no avail.
When I remove the ac adapter the power light is off and the battery light is orange.  When I remove the battery and plug in the ac adapter the power light is steady red.  As soon as I put the battery in the ac power light begins to blink on and off.  The computer does not power on with the battery removed and the ac adapter plugged in (but I'm not sure if it's supposed to). I will also add that in the last week or so when I power on I would get a black screen saying an NTFS file is bad and the machine wants to do a disk check.  The disk check never runs, even when I try to do it manually.
I have read this could be a motherboard issue, an ac adapter issue, or a battery issue.  I am hopoing a replacement battery fixes the problem.  Before buying a battery I was hoping someone had some info to share.  Thanks

I bought a battery hoping that takes care of the problem.  If that doesn't work I will try a new adapter and if that doesn't work I will probably just remove the hard drive and use it as an external on a new machine.  Seems there really isn't a whole lot of info out there about this problem other than the start button solution.

  • I'm getting a Plugged in, not charging message after replacing the CPU fan

I just replaced the CPU fan on this notebook last night and finished it today. Its running perfectly at the moment.
The problem is the windows Task bar on my desktop says "Plugged in, not charging" when I mouse over the battery indicator there. I've tried many things to fix it, from uninstalling or disabling the drivers for the devices involved (the ACPI battery and AC adapter) under Windows' device manager, to swapping out with my spare battery.
I've also switched power plans on the off chance that could have been causing some kind of battery charging setting. This did not fix it. The AC adapter works. I've been running this notebook for about two hours now searching for a solution, it just won't charge the battery. I've not tried observed it enough but I believe it will charge while powered off, but not while on. The orange LED indicator by the AC adapter port glows when the machine is off, indicating that it is charging.
I have a feeling the whole "uninstall device drivers for the battery devices" idea is a thing of the past. Everything I found which suggested doing that also mentioned Windows Vista, which at this point in time is a relic (July 2015). When I was replacing the CPU fan, it did get frustrating at times but everything is intact apart from some case clips and a few other plastic case parts. I have reason to believe everything is connected too because its still powered on, meaning its getting power, but it isn't going in to the battery.
    Symptom summary:
    Batteries: OKAC Adapter: OK
    MOBO: PROBABLY OK
    ME: NOT OK   xD

  • "not charging" message on iPad

My iPad 2 say "not charging" when I plug it into my MacBook Pro (15"). I have a friend that when she plugs her iPad 2 into her MacBook Pro (17"), the iPad say "charging". Whats up?

The IPad power supply provides 10 Watts, that is stated on the charger itself. A decent website about the USB specs as a power source is http://girr.org/mac_stuff/usb_stuff.html. At high load, regular USB 1.1 and 2.0 can provide 500mA (2.5 Watts) on a high load. USB came out with a required max of 900mA (approx. 5 Watts) but some implementations by certain hardware vendors provide more. It is even under discussion to provide up to 100 Watts under USB 3.0 in the future.
Based on the fact that you said it used to work and now it does not, something must have changed in your configuration. Perhaps you have too many devices attached at the same time. Try to unlug all other devices and try with just the IPad connected.

  • Ipad not charging. Plugged directly into usb, but has a not charging message. Why??

Having problems with my Ipad. It tells me it is not charging. How ever it seems to gain power wheen plugged into PC. How ever will not gain anymore than 5%life. Do i have a faulty battery?

    pwilden995 wrote:
So if it's left over night??
It would most likely finish the charge. As an experiment you can leave it for a couple hours and make note of the charge percentage before and after. If you turn the iPad of or put it to sleep to speed up the process, or alternately use the included power supply.

  • "Battery Is Not Charging" message

Hey all: I am brand new to the Mac world, and have a week old MBP 15 2.4 GHz with 2 Gig ram. I have been using the machine constantly since I got it on 4 days ago. Other than a few minutes here or there (or when in sleep mode traveling from home to office), the machine has always been run with the power adapter.
Today the % charge displayed on the battery icon has hovered around 55%, and when I click on the battery icon, it says "Battery is not Charging." Nevertheless, the green light is ON at the magnetic plug.
What is going on, and how do I deal with it.
    Thanks,
    EnerSal

The problem got worse and worse. The battery icon would say 90% charged with a run time of 4 plus hours. I then took the machine to a location where I had no power adapter, and it drained the battery in 15 minutes.
I took it to the Apple store this past weekend for a "genius bar" appointment. The tech looked at it for 90 seconds, declared that the battery was bad, and replaced it. The whole thng ook 5 minutes.
Now I have a battery that charges till full, runs for 4 hours + on a charge, and works great. Problem solved.

  • What to Do When Your iPad is Not Charging?

When you first bought your iPad, did you plug it into your PC and become frustrated when you discovered that it wouldn’t take a charge? Were you disappointed to discover that the iPad doesn’t charge through PCs and you have to plug it into the wall to get it to work? Most newer Mac computers (2008 and later) will charge the iPad. However, those of us who have a Mac are not immune to the trials and tribulations of the “Not Charging” message that can appear without warning. For anyone who has experienced, or will experience the “Not Charging” message on their iPad, we have a couple of suggestions.
A couple of weeks ago, I got a “Not Charging” message on my iPad when I plugged it into the 10 watt USB 2.0 power adapter that was plugged into my wall. Surprised by this development, I assumed there was something wrong with my plug and took my third-generation iPad to my office, where I plugged it into my computer and got the same message. “Oh, no,” I thought. Something is wrong. If this has happened to you, don’t worry. Nine times out of 10, there is nothing wrong. You just need to do a little trouble-shooting.
First of all, only plug your iPad into a PC if it is absolutely necessary. It will take hours to fill the battery up and you have to leave it in sleep mode (the iPad, that is). You see, even though your iPad may have a “Not Charging” message, it is charging. It is just doing it very slowly. In a pinch, leave your iPad plugged in, even if you don’t think it is getting a charge. You’ll at least increase the percentage a little.
If you have plugged your iPad into something that has previously worked to charge it, there are a few things to check out before making your Genius Bar appointment. The first, and most obvious is to make sure the power adapter is a 10 watt charger. The iPad, especially the third-generation one, will not charge with anything less than 10 watts. Next, make sure the iPad is properly plugged in (I know it sounds patronizing, but you’d be surprised at how often the problem is just an unplugged power source). Check the connection from the wall to the plug and the plug to the iPad. If you are sure that everything is as it should be, try another socket, and then try another cord. Lastly, plug another Apple device into the same cord. If you’re iPhone charges, but your iPad doesn’t, there may be a problem.
Once you’ve determined that it is not your power adapter, try turning your iPad on and off again. To shut your iPad down, hold the “Home” button and “Sleep” button at the same time for a couple of seconds. When the slider bar appears, slide to shut down the iPad. Wait 30 seconds and turn it back on by holding the Home and Sleep buttons at the same time. When the iPad is back online, plug it in again to see if that fixed the problem.
If you have been able to charge your iPad from your Mac previously, but are suddenly faced with the “Not Charging” message, when you plug it into the computer, check your connection first. Then, make sure the USB cord that you are trying to charge your iPad with is plugged directly into the Mac. Don’t plug the cord into a multi-cord hub that is plugged into the computer or the USB port on the keyboard. The iPad needs a lot of juice. If it is plugged into some third-party source, it may not send the amount of juice needed to charge the device.
If your USB cord is plugged directly into the computer and you still see the message, try blowing air into the iPad’s dock connector. You could also use a folded piece of paper to loosen dust particles. You should also make sure that none of the docking pins are broken. Those tiny little pieces of metal can be snapped off very easily.
There have also been some known issues with external 30-pin devices being plugged into the iPad that cause it to malfunction for a short period of time. For example, if you have recently used the iPad camera adapter, it may cause the device to charge improperly. The best way to remedy that is turning your iPad on and off again. However, sometimes, you just have to wait for it to clear out.
Just to summarize, here are some of the things that may be causing your iPad to show a “Not Charging” message:
    Wall socket is bad
Not using a 10-watt power adapter
    10-watt power adapter is bad
    USB 2.0 cord is bad
Device is plugged into a PC
Device is plugged into a multi-port USB hub or instead of directly into the Mac
    Dock connector is dusty
    Docking pin is broken
Device was recently used in conjunction with camera adapter.

    Thanks for sharing it! great!
