Not charging unless on docking station

my son's 30 gig won't charge on the regular charger...will only chage on the docking station....and then can't get it to shut off....please help
ipod 30 gig   Windows XP

Fair enough. It's sad that I used to be able to do this though and now I've erased my music on my iPhone! I need it synced to my work computer, but all my music is on my personal computer.
But this also doesn't answer the question why my iPhone 5, which has been reset and only synced to my main PC, is not being recognized by my main computer when it's being used as a laptop. As soon as I am back in the office using the docking station, it recognizes it and I am able to sync, charge, etc.

  • W520 not charging while in docking station

    Hi
I've got a W520. When connected to the docking station it shows charging in the power manager, but the battery is unloading at the same time, so it says it's charging the battery but it really doesn't. I tried to clean the contacts but it didn't change. I'm using the 170W AC adapter and if connected directly to the notebook the battery is charging and it works. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    /C
PS I have all the newest updates. I did install a BIOS update, and even a battery update some days ago. After that everything was still fine. The problem occured only yesterday. I also restored the bios defaults, no change.

IMO, the sound probably isn't a good sign. Maybe a contact is subpar and zapping?

  • IPod Charges on a Docking Station but not via USB

Bit of an odd one this, I have been living with it for a good many years, however now as I have discovrered the usefullness of this forum I will ask for some advice on the cause of this.
Simply my iPod will not charge when connected to usb, eg charger, from the computer. When connected to a docking station that runs off mains power it will charge. It holds the charge well.
The problm first started when I plugged it into a faulty USB port. The keyway was broken so I managed to insert the connector the wrong way round. This messed up the iPod and I wasn't able to get it working again untill I got it home and connected it up to my computer. From this point onwards it has not charged via usb.
Naturaly I would have thought the Battery, or possibly some charging unit to be at fault in this, however as it depends on how I go about charging it, I am unsure as to what it would be.
    Any thoughts?

The 5th generation iPod had two sets of power input pins on the dock connector. One set is for USB power (+5V) while the other set is for Firewire connections (+12V and up), a hold over from when all iPods could charge and sync via a Firewire connection. The 5th generation could only sync via USB but Apple left the charging ability from Firewire connections to allow the iPod to be backwards compatible with all the various chargers and docks already "in the field". Back then, almost all docks used the Firewire pins for inputting charging voltage (usually +12V) so they would be backward compatible with all previous iPods.
Sooooo, what has probably happened is when you plugged in the USB cord backward with your iPod, you damaged the input circuitry of the iPod for the USB voltage pins (perhaps a diode or resistor burned up) and now you can no longer have input on those pins. However your Firewire connection is still fine. So when you plug into your old dock which still supports Firewire charging you can charge your iPod. Note that almost all newer docks no longer have the Firewire pin connections and will all charge via USB only. So your iPod will not charge on new docks.
I hope that answers your question,
    Patrick

my ipod will only charge on the docking station. says it has a full charge but when I take it off the docking station it says battery is low so I've plugged it into the usb and plugged it into my wall outlet but it is still not charging. I'm not sure what generation it is, its an 80GB. Help?

The battery is possibly unable to take as much power as a normal battery. It may need a replacement battery.

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!

  • My iphone 4S will not charge unless the power is switched off.  How to fix?

    Hello,
My iPhone 4S will not charge unless it is switched off.  This happened suddenly with no other symptom several weeks ago.  If I plug the charger in, while powered on, the phone doesn't appear to detect it has been plugged in and the battery icon doesn't change its display to show charging.  Charging only happens when the phone is powered off completely.
I did some searches for this type of problem and saw it has happened to a few with earlier version iphones, but didn't see any published solutions.
A visit to the local Apple store didn't help either as I was told had to make an appointment; can't make an appointment for awhile because out of the country and no Apple stores where I'm at.
This is a very annoying problem.  Anyone else have this happen and have a fix?

I got this problem solved and just want to let others know what it was.
I followed ewdel1's advice and brought my phone in to have it looked at and sure enough, was told that this is a problem others have had and it was due to a faulty integrated circuit.  Luckily, I was able to take this in to be looked at when I did because my 1 year warranty was about to expire in a week.
Apple replaced my 4S with a "new" phone.  The replacement looks and works good as new, so happy I didn't have to go through a hassle and the replacement was very straightforward.

my battery on my iphone 4 will not charge unless the phone is turned off. Has anyone else had this problem?

Is this observed as the iPhone is plugged into a Computer or into an AC outlet; or both?  In any case you should try a Reset of the iPhone by depressing the Sleep button and the Home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears then wait for the Reset to bring your iPhone back to the Lock-Screen.

  • My iphone will not charge unless it is turned off

My 4s will not charge unless its off then when it gets a certain amount of charge it turns back on and doesnt charge again  It is also recognized when hooked up by the hp laptop but not itunes

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
Please be more specific about "it wont connect back to the computer" so that appropriate troubleshooting steps can be provided.

  • IPod battery not charging unless in speaker-dock

I have my iPod 5g (60gig) for about 2 years now. About 2 months ago the battery started to act up.
It would very suddenly discharge completely (I noticed that my room had gotten unusually cold before the first of these failures). The ipod would not respond to buttons, and plugging it into the computer dose not charge it.
After some trying i discovered that the ipod would charge again if pluged into an i-station speaker-dock, and after 2 or three minuits in the i-station it would also charge fine from my ibook.
About 2 weeks ago the battery on my ipod again got itself completely discharged. As i did not have access to an istation i was unable to recharge it since.
Today I bought a belkin usb-wall charger with ipod cable that is marked as 'made for ipod' and states clearly that it is ipod video compatible at walmart (i'm on holidays in the US) and have been trying to use this to recharge my ipod, however the charger is not helping.

I received a 4th Gen 20GB iPod (around 2 years old)from a friend and asked me whether I could fix it for him, which has been left untouched as a paper-weight for almost 2 months.
I tried to turn it on, and the screen was completed blank and the device looked dead. Before doing anything I prepared the following:-
    1. A window based PC
    2. A Mac computer
    3. An USB iPod cable
    4. A Firewire iPod cable
    5. An iPod AC charger
As the iPod was previously formatted on a PC, therefore I tried to plug it with a PC via USB cable, it did not response and not able to get recognized by the PC. I ejected the iPod and connected with an AC charger, after a few minutes, I did a Reset for the iPod
    How to reset iPod
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
The iPod showed an Apple sign, it stuck there for almost a minute, the screen then showed a battery with an exclamation mark sign, and after a minute, the iPod turned off itself. I was sure that the iPod carried very low battery, and could not be charged by connecting it with any computer (both Mac and PC).
I decided to let it have a charge with an AC charger for a bit longer, after 10 minute I did the Reset again, this time a sign of folder with exclamation mark showed up after the Apple sign, and again could not get recognized by a computer.
I changed my mind, and put the iPod into disk mode

Instead of connecting with a PC, I plug it with my Mac using a Firewire cable, it did not response, so I switched the cable to an USB, interestingly, the iPod got recognized and a window pop up indicating that the iPod needed to do a Restore. Therefore I clicked “Restore”.
After that I left the iPod with the ac charger overnight, and it finally recovered

  • 5th gen Ipod not playing in any docking station

I have a 6th generation ipod classic that works great in my pioneer receiver and in both cars. I bought a 5th gen ipod on ebay for my wife and it seems to work just fine.
I restored it using itunes, then put synced songs to it. Everything works fine when it's connected to Windows but it won't play in any docking station. It gets a charge from the station, but won't play.
Does the 5th gen ipod not work in docking stations or is it possible mine isn't functioning right. I contacted the manufacturer of the station in one of the cars and they said all ipods should work.

I have the same problem with a Pioneer X-HM50-K hifi system. My 5th gen ipod (system 1.3 which up-to-date iTunes claims is up-to-date, tried resetting/restoring/all that), when plugged into the docking bay, pauses the music and shows a tick mark after a while with the text "ok to disconnect" beneath it. The tick mark becomes a Pioneer logo after a while but that does not change the fact that the ipod does not react, neither to the command buttons on the Pioneer system (or on the remote control) nor to the buttons on the iPod itself (those do 'click', but have no effect). It does get charged, but doesn't play, just as in the top posting.
A friend's iPod nano works just fine on the Pioneer, and my iPod works fine for everything else (headphones, iTunes, other docking systems I tried at friends', ...). So there seems to be a specific incompatibility with Pioneer systems.
How can this problem be investigated and solved ?

  • New Ipod Touch 32G not charging in the dock after software installed

For XMAS we gave our boys money to buy Ipods, our older son Ryan added a bit of his own money and bought the 32G touch, the younger boy Mitch the 8G.
We had also given one of them a docking station to go with the ipod they were buying.
After playing with the Ipod on the computer and loading music games and apps Ryan put the ipod in the dock and it reported that
"Charging is not supported on this device"
Though it happily charges the 8G touch and our old 4G mini, and my wifes dock charges it.
We took it all back to the store and they told us to reset the iPod and try again, we did that and it worked, the ipod charged.
Ryan then started loading it up again and after loading it put it in the charger/station and again the failure message.
The apple support information about this is that this message is when trying to charge a new gen Ipod with the now unsupported firewire.
So how come it works before apps are loaded and not after ?
It has not happened with Mitch's 8G touch

Charging is not a problem with the cable and computer or the wall charger
    BUT
we bought a docking station so he can play music for long periods and the ipod will charge and keep going.
The Dock does not charge it and shows the error message.
Though when he does a reset or restore to factory settings it works fine.
It is not till he installs some apps that it stops working, so it must be a software/firmware/configuration based issue.
So is it an Apple problem or the Dock ?
