Not connecting to laserwriter select 360

Hello,
I work between two printers. One is an Epsom color printer, the other is my trusty old Laserwriter Select 360. Suddenly the Laserwriter is not connecting. I connect through an Asante box and up until two days ago, everything worked.
I have tried the trick of disconnecting the Asante and then re-connecting, etc., but still I have no connection to the Apple printer.
Can you suggest anything?

Jim,
When was the last time you turned off the power to every component all at once and made a clean start? Try it and see if things reset or reload.
Next, have you tried removing the printer using system preferences and then adding it back in? We just added an older HP laser printer to our ethernet LAN but the printer had Appletalk turned off at its end. That was a menu option on the printer. Apple simplifies controls at the printer end on their brand of the same or similar printer style by giving you fewer controls. Wait. They give you none! While HP laser printers have extensive menu option controls on the printer itself, with most Apple printers the reset has to come from a service dip switch, a momentary reset like a CUDA switch on a motherboard or from a power off technique.
So, pull the plug, give it a minute or two to dissipate any charge in capacitors and then reconnect power. While that may sound like hokus pokus magic, that is related to another power discharge instruction for how to revive 'dead' monitors. Give it a try. Can't hurt and costs nothing.
Without special testing, you do not know precisely what changed from the printer working one day and not the next. So, try a reset.
The other response offers a good way to see if there is any traffic on the ethernet cable as evidenced by blinking LED traffic lights. Isolating each component is helpful and easier if you have more than one of something to test with as well.
Just some random thoughts to get you started.

  • Apple LaserWriter Select 360  and OSX 5.1.2 upgrade

    My LaserWriter 360 has performed perfectly from Tiger to Leopard 5.1. After upgrading to 5.1.2 it would NOT print. The LaserWriter is connected to the computer with a Ethernet cable into an Asante box,and then into the printer. This has never failed for over 6 years and since OS X came out. The Apple LaserWriter 360 driver DOES exist in print driver lists in the Library. I Archived and Installed back to the OSX 5.1 version hoping that might fix my problem but it did not.
    I have gone into "Network" and "Printer Fax" — tried everything with no success. I hate to part with this printer as it performs great when it was working before the 5.1.2 upgrade. Any suggestions?

    Help! Apple advised me that there are very smart people here, smarter than they, who might be able to help me. I'm having the same problem getting my MacBook OS 10.5 to work (at all) with my Laserwriter Select 360. It is not supported (7 years) by Apple. It worked wirelessly when I first set up borrowing the driver from my Ibook. My household uses 3 ibooks with great success including the one I hoped to replace with my MacBook. After 5 months, and trying various solutions posted here, by some fluke it printed once yesterday.
    Can anyone tell me where I can get a driver that will work wirelessly with my airport? Apple said I have a Guttenberg (?) default in the OS software, which is not visible in the printer library, but can only be plugged directly into the MacBook via an adapter. This would mean the rest of the Mac users in my home (Ibooks) would not have access to that port and I want to be wireless. I've read many happy reports here and hope someone very wise can help me. Apple says this printer never worked wirelessly. Somehow I completed all of my graduate education using it wirelessly so I have hope that someone here can help.     Hey, BD, I looked at Brothers last night in connection to this questiona and it looks like their newest/current laser print-only units go back to 10.4 but no further.
    Brother is the best hope but the OP may need to look for an older model still in stock. For example, for our older Brother HL5250DN, they still show OS9 drivers:

    Gary, web-check for stores that still have older models on teh shelf. You can also look at "newer-but-not-new" and then use the Brother site to check for OS9 drivers.

    We paid US$199 for ours new about seven years ago. It's been a real workhorse and trouble-free. Well, except for the time my wife tried to feed it a odd paper stock that was not on the printer's official diet!
    A Beige G3 consideration: The Big Beige doesn't come with USB ports. You must add a PCI USB adaptor card, and the ones that worked in the Beige are harder to find today.
    However, the Beige has built-in ethernet so if you get a printer with an ethernet connector, you will be in bisiness with neither the expense of an extra adaptor card nor the occasional buttheadedness of USB printing. The "N" in our Brother model designates it as a network printer so it has an ethernet port. Many others do also.

  • Can't find a printer driver for LaserWriter Select 360?

    My older G4, which I just upgraded from OS 9.2 to OS X10.3.9 (I was reluctant to leave PageMaker), doesn't have a printer driver for my Apple LaserWriter Select 360. It finds my Epson 2200 with no problems. I've tried two shareware programs. The first seemed to say that Apple Printer Drivers were missing and that it had reinstalled them (but I don't remember the name. I found it in one of the threads here). But there was no sign of the LaserWriter when I tried to print. The second program I tried was Pacifist, figuring I could just reinstall that one printer driver from the Panther disks. But I couldn't see it anywhere though there was two Epsons, Hewlitt Packard and others. I tried the Apple website, but had no luck. I know there is one because two other computers we have in OS Xs can recognize the printer. Is there a driver out there I can download or is there someway I can get it off the other computer I have that is in 10.3.9? It's really frustrating to have to transfer the regular stuff I want to print to another computer.

    We're halfway there...maybe! The printer shows up on the list, but when I try to print something (I tried an InDesign file, also a Word one), the computer sends the file and the printer starts, but then puts the job on hold (the green light on the printer never blinks). If I click Start Job, the same thing happens again.
    When I looked at Help and found "Setting up to print to an IP Printing network printer," it said to "type the IP address or DNS name for the printer in the Printer Address field." I looked through my "User's Guide" and didn't know what that was. It wouldn't let me "ADD" the printer without one so first I typed in the whole name of the printer that was on the list below. Then it let me ADD, but not print. Then I tried it again with the word "home." Same thing, it added the printer but wouldn't let me print.
    One other question I had was when I got to the Add Printer, IP Printing, I had to choose a "Printer Type." It was on LPD/LPR so I left it. I didn't know what any of the choices meant. Perhaps that was wrong.
    Now that the LaserWriter is on the list, can we make it print?

  • Can I get my Laserwriter Select 360 to work on my intel iMac?

    I have a new Intel iMac running 10.4.8. I want to use my Apple Laserwriter Select 360 with the iMac connecting via an Ethernet to Local Talk bridge (Assantetalk) via my net gear router. The driver comes up in the printer list, but it comes up with an error -50 and won't select?
    Is this possible to get working?

    It doesn't look like appletalk is an option when I go to network preference configurations- just Bluetooth,Built-in Ethernet, Built-in Firewire and Airport. The Apple Laserwriter Select is very old with an appletalk connection. Does the Imac have a port for that kind of connection?

  • LaserWriter Select 360 + 10.6.3 = can't install

    How do I add the printer? It's not seen under Default, and I can't use IPP because I don't find an IP address.
    LW360 is connected to ethernet via Farallon EtherMac iPrint adapter.
    Setup is: LW360> PhoneNET connector> LocalTalk cable> iPrint adapter> 10Base-T straight-thru cable> D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router> iMac.
    Is there a way to connect this printer, and if not, why does Snow Leopard include the driver for this printer on the install disk?
    Note: Snow Leopard is on external drive. iMac internal HD runs OSX10.4.11

    Won't work because it depends upon AppleTalk which is defunct in Snow Leopard. My suggestion would be to get a parallel based print server like an HP Jetdirect 300x. then set it up using HP Jetdirect Socket. HP Jetdirect 300x's are around on eBay. I paid $20 for mine and got my LaserJet 4MP working.

    How can I connect a LaserWriter Select 360 to an Intel iMac? I have an existing ethernet network, but the 360 has no eithernet connection on it. Is it possible to go from a serial port connection or a scuzzy (sp?) port to an ethernet network (i.e. is there an adaptor cord from one to the other)?'
    If it is possible, will I run into a print driver problem (i.e..will the print driver for the 360 run on an Intel iMac)?

    Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I got side tracked on some things that needed immediate attention.
    As it turns out, I already had an AsanteTalk box on hand. After setting it up, I was able to "see" the Select 360 in the Printer Set-up Utility and make it active, but I still can't print to it.
    I've checked all the cables and they are O.K. As for the AsentTalk box, it was O.K. last time I used it (a couple years ago), and if it wasn't O.K. at this time, would the Select 360 have appeared in the Printer Utility on the Printer List?
    I think I'm further along than when I started, but no cigar yet. LOL
    Any further ideas?

    The LaserWriter select 360 is a Postscript level 2
    AppleTalk/LocalTalk printer. Your Intel iMac can use
    AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to talk to printers like that
    one, and the drivers are built-into Mac OS X.
    The missing piece is a converter or "bridge" between
    the two wiring schemes. This can be accomplished with
    a stunt-box (either of two varieties) or by running
    Apple's free LaserWriter Bridge software on an older
    Mac that has both Ethernet port and a round MiniDIN-8
    serial Printer or Modem port.
    The Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT or Asante
    AsanteTalk are available used, and the AsanteTalk is
    also available new. Most of these are connected with
    PhoneNet boxes and phone cords, and a terminating
    resistor is plugged into the last open socket.
    There are also a few stunt-box variants on the used
    market that use slightly different schemes, such as
    ending in a Printer-8 cable connection. The only
    disadvantage is that a box that has a printer cable
    can only support one device, while PhoneNet ones can
    support up to 8 older Macs and/or printers on the
    LocalTalk side.

  • New iMac can't see Laserwriter Select connected to a PC on same LAN-- why?

    I've just returned to the Mac universe after a five year hiatus. When I discovered how well Macs play with PCs and Unix these days, I decided to come back.
    There's just one issue: I can't print to my Laserwriter Select 360, connected by parallel port to a Windows XP Pro PC on my LAN. My new iMac doesn't see the printer at all. The imac does see the PC's workgroup in the Network Neighborhood, and I can mount the shared volumes of that PC on the mac with no problem, so the Mac can talk to the PC for filesharing, anyway. (smb:// address used)
    Applecare has no clue why I can't see the printer. They told me to turn on Windows Sharing and Print Sharing, but that had no effect. The Windows machines on my LAN can all see and print to the shared Laserwriter Select 360, no problem. They're all running Windows XP pro, latest patches.
    The iMac of course has the latest Tiger. All machines are on my internal subnet 192.168.0.*.
    I just got a new cartridge for the Laserwriter, and there's no reason to retire it-- that printer works great. I just can't believe/accept that the iMac can't be made to print to an Apple printer! (Also, I've heard that appletalk->ethernet bridge solutions are flaky so that's not an ideal route).
    Any/all ideas welcome.

    Here's the result. The PC is on 192.168.0.2, and the iMac was assigned .18 by DHCP.
    I just tried adding a lexmark printer to the PC (over USB) to see if there might be some difference. The other windows box on the lan sees the LexMark same as it sees the Laserwriter (and both show up in the output of smbclient below). Needless to say, the iMac doesn't see the LexMark either.

  • WRT610N 5ghz xbox 360 wireless N adapter won't connect (xbox 360 "Wireless Mode = Not connected")

    Hi folks,
    Looks like some other folks have reported similar. Haven't seen if an answer has been found anywhere.
    WRT610v2 running latest firmware.
    xbox 360 sees both the 2.4 network (ssid = network1) and the 5.0 network (ssid network2) when it does its scan.
    Initially, xbox showed network strength for 2.4 network at 3 out of 4 bars and 5.0 network at 1 out of 4 bars.
    Connects to 2.4 network just fine
    Won't pull an ip address and reports "Not connected" when I select the 5.0 network.
    I tweaked the wireless settings per some suggestions I found in this forum and now it shows the 5.0 network at 4 out of 4 bars signal strength. Also turned security on and off and xbox 360 reported the changes in security on the 5.0 network.
    So the xbox 360 is definitely seening the 5.0 network. and can tell if it is running WPA2 or not.
    If it can see the 5.0 network and recognizes what security and network type (infrastructure) is set, would would stop it from connecting to the WRT610n router and getting an IP address? No mac filters or firewalls are set and, again, connects just fine and gets an ip address if I select the 2.4 (network1 ssid) instead.
    Won't work if I manually set IP, subnet, gateway, dns either.
    Have tried mixed versus dedicated on the N radio...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the suggestions. Tried as you suggested but still no luck. Seems to see the 5ghz ssid just fine with plenty of strength but just will not pull an ip address or even connect if I manually assign.
    Any other thoughts?

  • Laserwriter Select Printer won't print in Tiger OS 4.10

    I have a PowerPC G4 computer newly updated from 9.2 to Tiger OS 4. 10. My Laserwriter Select 360 is connected to the computer by Asantetalk, which then plugs to the computer.
    Tiger will connect to the printer and it seems to print but nothing happens. There are no errors either.
    I have checked all of the cables and they are correct. Everything worked great prior to the upgrage.
    Asante does not have any information on OS 4.10 either.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

    I suggest you buy a USB-parallel adapter cable. Caveat - I'm not sure that will help. You need to figure out if the Asante or printer are at fault (by using with another computer), and next after that will be generic OS X fixes, like:
    Boot from install DVD and repair the hard drive.
    Download the Combo updater and re-update OS X.
    Try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.

  • LaserWriter Select 306 Success Story

    I would have posted this in one of the open threads but I decided to use a New Topic because it might be seen easier. The following got my trusty old LaserWriter working again under Snow Leopard.
    After going round and round with different USB to parallel cables I ended up with the Belkin F5U002V1. My first few attempts at getting this cable to work failed. I have been following some of the topics here and on other message boards so I had tried everything.
    By setting the DIP switch on the back of the printer to 4 and turning it on, you get a configuration page. On that page, it says that the engine in this printer is the HP LaserJet III version. So, I setup my printer as described:
    With the printer off set the DIP switch to Zero
    Plug in the USB to parallel cable
    Turn printer on
    Open Print & Fax preferences
    Add a Printer using the Default button and it should recognize the cable (let it finish
    Change the name of the printer to whatever you want
    Bypass the Automatic setting and look for the list of printer drivers
    Choose HP LaserJet 3 - Gutenprint v5.2.3
    Close the windows
    The printer options will be wrong but you can still choose to print manually if you have the single sheet/envelope attachment and want to use it.

    I can tell you what I did to make this printer work.
    The laserWriter Select 360 has three (3) inputs available, AppleTalk, parallel, and serial. I got a USB to parallel converter (I have Gear Head brand).
    Set the rotary switch next to the connectors to 1. This will set the parallel and serial ports to Postscript.
    After plugging in the adapter and turning on the printer, you can add the printer in the Print & Fax system preferences. It will show the model of the adapter, not the printer, but you can change the name to anything you want.
    Preferences will install a generic Postscript driver. You will need to change the print driver to Apple LaserWriter Select 360 either fax or no fax according the one you have. This driver is available from the Print and Fax preferences.
    This works fine for me and is much faster than AppleTalk ever was.

    I'm new to Macs as of about 2 hrs ago. I've been a PC geek for too long. I have a home network set up with a wired PC and a a wireless laptop PC, and I just took delivery of my new iMac. It will recognize my network (and a few others) but will not connect to it. The iMac won't connect, stating that the password is incorrect. Not really sure how to proceed. I've read through a bunch of posts, and it sounds like most people are able to connect, and then have occasional disconnects. The router is up to date re: firmware. The router is too far away from the iMac to connect an ethernet cable to.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Discussions, Kayexalate!
    I assume you mean that during the "Welcome" setup process you were denied access. That is always the case if you're trying to join a "closed" network. Even for other reasons it's possible to get that message. First, open the Application "Internet Connect" and set it to "Show AirPort status in menu bar" and then close and quit Internet Connect.
    Use the "AirPort" beam icon in the menu bar to Turn AirPort On, and if, as you found, it will not connect - open and select "Other..." and in the box that opens, first use the "Wireless Security:" selector to duplicate your network's security method and then enter the name and password of the network. Click the "OK" button and that should allow the connection, as well as (due to the default settings in place) enter your network as a "preferred network" in the "AirPort" pane of the Network panel of System Preferences.

    From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
    Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
    If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.

    Background
    For the last year, we've had the 2008R2 print server set up and the clients have not had any problems connecting to the print server to add printers.
    Issue
    Over the past ~3 weeks, we've gotten spurious reports from users stating they're unable to add a printer. The specific error displayed is:
    You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer.
    It occurs for multiple vendors, so it's not a print driver specific issue.  I've personally witnessed the problem where (using a User's account) I was unable to add Printer X out of a list of 10 random printers.  2 minutes later, still logged on
    as the same user, I was then able to add Printer X which doesn't make any sense since nothing had changed.
    Another user logging into the same workstation will not have any problems adding the same problematic printer.  The user who had the problem can log onto a different workstation and add the same printer with no problems, so it's not a User permission
    issue either.
    Most of the time running gpupdate /force and/or rebooting the box will also 'solve' the problem.
    Running the group policy results wizard on a few random workstations (which have exhibited this problem in the past), shows everything appears to be properly configured/enabled related to GPOs, including the
    Prevent users from installing printer drivers setting per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259937
    Has anyone else ran into this problem lately?
    How does one troubleshoot this issue since I can't faithfully reproduce it on demand since it appears to resolve itself after a period of time?

    Haven't found the smoking gun to this problem, but I am getting closer.
    Troubleshooted another PC today which was exhibiting this problem for another user. Logged onto the PC with my User account and sure enough, received the same message for the same printer.   Fired up Sysinternals Process Monitor, but nothing useful
    was captured when receiving the failure message.  There was also another Point and Print printer which was present on the workstation (i.e.
    PrinterName on PrintServerName) for my User account which stated "printer cannot be removed. Access is Denied" when I tried to delete it.  Odd. Getting properties on the printer would bring up the correct info from the print server
    though, so it was valid and appeared functional.
    I tried running the new
    MS FixIT printing tool, but it failed in full mode with an admin account.
    Next, I searched through the registry for this printername which I was unable to delete. Eventually it was found at:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\PRINTERNAME
    On a hunch, I deleted the entire PrinterName key, restarted the print spooler, and then was able to add the printer with no permission errors!  There were several more printers listed in this registry key. I tried the same steps again:
    validate receiving 'sufficient access' error.
    purge printer's registry key
    restart spooler
    Able to add the same printer via point and print.
    This solved the problem on half of the printers. The others added with no errors.  The printer drivers in question are from both HP and Xerox, so I doubt it's a vendor specific issue and instead Windows (unsure if XP or 2008 though).
    It would appear that Windows caches the information about the printer/driver/settings/etc from the print server in CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\PRINTERNAME ?  Why does it need to be duplicated
    in both HKLM and HKCU?
    Separate PC, further exploring this printer issue and the contents of the \LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\ keys.  On this PC, I successfully ran the MS FixIt for Printing tool in Full mode and rebooted.  After reboot, the
    System Event logged the following for multiple printers -- which should've been deleted --

    subkeys, rebooted the PC, logged on, and those errors did not repeat. 
    Something strange is definitely going on with the printing subsystem on XP lately...
