"Not enough free space" message while syncing iPod

I am using Windows XP with the most recent version of iTunes and the iPod updater.
I just bought a new 30 GB iPod. I have a rather large library of music, and when I first tried to sync, it told me it didn't have enough space on the hard drive. Okay, that's fine, but I tried everything - removing podcasts from sync, album artwork, and I unchecked a lot of music (I set it to sync with only checked music). Still, the same message. I did the five Rs as well, but I get the same message.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give.
Thanks a bunch.
-Jason
On second glance, the message says not enough free space in iTunes library. And now the restore function does not work in the iPod updater.

  • TS1503 not enough free space to complete sync

Here's  my story.  I had an ipad first gen, then bought the 3gen and gave #1 to my husband.  When I got my new 3gen, 64gig, I plugged it into my laptop.  Things seemed fine. I then purchased a new laptop and when I plugged in the ipad (without restoing to factory settings), I lost my music except for that purhased through itunes.  Since then, I continually get the following message when trying to sync: the iPad canno tbe synced because theer is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 4.36 GB required).
My ipad indicates that I have 22G of free space.
What gives?  I have queried this through Google but have not reached an answer.
Thanks, in advance, for any help provided.

    Try to Reset the iPad:
From the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app at the bottom till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.

  • Not enough free space msg lies, 4 gig nano

I have a 4 gig nano, from iTunes it shows my nano has 3.71 GB free.
I have a song list that I've specified as the list to update to Nano, and the list shows it's 3.69 GB in size.
But when I try to update the nano with this list, I get the "not enough free space" message.
According to my math, I have .02 GB free and should be able to fit the list on the device.
    What gives here?
    thanks.

I`ve had no replies, but answered my own question. For those interested . . .
If you have say 1500 songs and only 2 Gigs on you iPod here`s what you might do.
    1. Load up your library with all of your music, you`re own music, copyright, etc. remember . . .
    2. Make multiple playlists as you like. I manage my own for some things, example; I like to have some alternative in my Rock playlist, visa versa, etc, etc. so I pick & choose what goes where. I also use smart playlists for those that I don`t want altered, eg. Classical will only have Classical in the playlist, so the smart playlist automatically updates itself.
    3. Manualy make a special playlist with ALL of your favourite tunes, let`s say it`s over 800 or so.
    4. Next, use your iPod preferences to load up your iPod with contacts, photos, etc. and manage the music on part by selecting the playlists you want updated on the iPod. Start with choosing only small playlists that you definitely want on board. Then update and check your used space on your iPod. Let`s say you`ve got room for another 1.3 Gig`s of music.
    5. Now create a smart playlist that selects music randomly from your new smart playlist of favourite tunes and also stipulate the "Limit to" amount by MB or GB. In the example above this would be 1300MB (as you can not place a decimal in a GB field).
    6. Lastly, use your iPod preferences again to check the smart playlist you have just created and update it onto your iPod.
    7. If you ever want to freshen things up, just delete all of the items in the smart playlist and start all over. This would be handy after adding a whack o new tunes to your library.
Voila, you've maximized the space on your iPod and loaded only your favourite songs in completely random order. Hope this helps somebody out there
PS. This thing they call iTunes is briliant realy!

  • "Not enough free space" when there is

I'm trying to copy a bunch of fairly small files to a 512 MB SD card using an external card reader. Even though the Finder tells me there is, say, 300 MB available, when I try to copy a number of files at once, I'll get a message telling me that a certain file can not be copied because there is not enough free space. However, if I go back and try to copy that file and a few others, they'll copy without a problem. I'll copy another relatively small number without a problem and then try another bunch and get the error "not enough free space" message again.
While I eventually did copy all the files in small bunches, it was a drag and I'd love to find out why it didn't work in one large bunch. . . .

Perhaps the write-speed to the card via the card reader
(likely just in the card's circuitry itself) is too slow to take
a load of files for copying that way. Given some of the
camera cards can barely move one image at a time to
the card from the camera's processor, you have to figure
this load of several strings of different files at once has
to be a considerable load on the card's limited speed.
Some cameras and devices with fast image processors
can use faster memory cards. If you need to drag-drop
images or files in large capacity groups, consider getting
a faster speed card and see if that helps. Or use a USB
    Flash Drive, since some of them do better with file groups;
if just using the device to move large files between PCs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ***There is not enough free space on the untitled disk***

I am attempting to install PrintShop software and need approx. 1150MB for it to be installed.  My computer says that I have a 256GB solid state SATA.  It has 105.33GB free out of 159.18GB.  I don't have any idea of how to fix this. I emptied my trash and got rid of many files that weren't being used any longer.  Could someone tell me what info they need from me about my laptop in order to help me?
I know that this is not a new topic, but I couldn't find an answer in past discussions that fit my situation.  Thanks so much.

I did the repair permissions in disk utility and I have done repair disk previously.  After both quit running, I restart my computer (I'm not sure if that is what needs done).  But neither of the disk utility actions have helped.
I also went in and looked at the partition.  I think I messed that up.  In the partition space, it only showed my Untitled partition.  I took the cursor and used it to drag and enlarge the partition so that the Untitled had the full space.  I've never used the partition before and I don't run Windows or anything like that so I don't think I have a need for more than one partition, do I?
My Untitled drive now shows that there is tons of free space, but I am still getting a "not enough free space" message.
Also, in Finder, I see Favorites with Apps, documents, downloads, music, etc and I see devices that lists my PrintShop CD, but I don't see my drive listed any longer.  Do you know what I might have done?

  • Question I have a dilemma . I added a lot of songs in my iTunes now when I synced my ipod this message appear "Elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additiona

I addesd a lot of songs in my itunes, now when I synced my ipod this message appear "elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the itunes library (additional 382m is required). Then I uncheck a lot of song and synced my ipod again same message appeared. Do I need to buy a new ipod with more memories? Somebody told me to check apply after I unchecked some of the songs but I cannot find the word APPLY. please help I'm not a very technical person.

The Sync button becomes the Apply button, if you change the iPod's settings in iTunes.  If you are only unchecking songs in the iTunes music library, you click on the Sync button.
When you select the iPod in iTunes, you see the iPod's Summary screen on the main part of the iTunes window.  There is a checkbox there for Sync only checked songs.  Did you check that checkbox?  If you want iTunes to ignore the songs you unchecked when syncing your iPod, that setting needs to be enabled.  If you change that setting, you'll see the the Sync botton has changed to Apply.  Click Apply.
That method of unchecking songs works, but it may become annoying over time, as you need to uncheck more and more songs.  If you want advice on some other more convenient ways to make it work, you can post back.

    Hello pryan1012,
What this message means is that you have more music in your itunes library than there is free space in your ipod.
I had this same issue at one time. This is what helped me put my music on the ipod. I used manually manage.

  • IPod touch cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes Library

Hi, I have just transferred my whole iTunes library from my old computer to my new one and am trying to sync my iPod to the new one. However I get an error message saying "iPod touch cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes Library (additional 5.38GB required). I currently have 8.5GB free on my iPod so I don't understand why it cannot sync.

Hey Georgiarose94, If what's going on, is what I think it is, when you sync the information it's over written, it can take 2 to 3 times more space the get the info on your iPod, once it's there the info only occupies the space it needs. Kind if of like moving, when you first step in the room with boxes of stuff there's no room. But after you get everything put away all is well. If you haven't already, connect your iPod to your computer, from your iPod Summary page, go down to Options and check reduce bit rate to (select 128 kbps). (Wording maybe a little different). Will greatly reduce memory space needed on your iPod, and you really do not hear the difference in sound quality. Other option, go to music and select manual so you can pick which music you place on the iPod. You need to reduce by 5.38GB of information to finish your download. Hope this helps. Cheers.

  • "The iPod ... cannot be synced because there is not enough free space.."

    Error Message:
"The iPod... cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 21.62 GB required)."
I moved my iTunes library FROM a Win 7 32bit HD to a new Win 7 32bit HD.
On the old HD  iTunes  uses 145GB of HD space.
On the new HD iTunes uses  145GB of HD space.
On both instances of iTunes I have selected "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC"
My iTouch is a 3rd gen. 64GB unit.
In the past I would only take 75% of the available space. Now I am short 22GB.
         What am I missing?
    TIA,

    Appears to be fixed.
Moved all music recorded at 128bit or less to different location.
Moved video files to different location.
Synced sections of iTunes collection individually: Only Music, then Podcasts, etc.
Seems to be working fine.  Apps also came over without changes.
????  Only thing missing is my PLAYLISTS.
????    Someone know where they reside on my old HD list and why they did not come over?

  • IPod can't be synced  because there is not enough free space?

At first, my iPod couldn't be synced because 'playlists doesn't exist'(there's another forum about this and apparently this comment helped a lot of people...
"Click on your 'DEVICE' on the left in ITUNES,
click the music tab and where it says Sync Music, hit the all songs and playlist radio button.... worked for me, hope that helps...."
So I did just that, but then songs still won't go in my iPod because...
When I click device and go to the music tab, I clicked 'all songs and playlists' then clicked apply. This message shows up:'...cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (2.99 GB required, 51.2 MB available)'
By the way, my iPod's supposed to store 1,000 songs/4 GB, and at this moment, my iTunes has about 700-800 something songs, that only takes up about 2-3GB.
At the bottom part in device, it says this...
    Capacity - 3.77 GB
    Audio - 851 KB
    Other - 3.71 GB
    Free Space - 51.2 MB
I basically don't get it. Isn't it supposed to store 4 GB and more than 2-3 GB? I feel so stupid, but anyway...
Should I delete more songs or is there really something wrong? Before my songs disappeared in my iPod, all the songs could fit into it, even more than what I have in my iTunes now. What's wrong?

When you say restore it, do you mean restore the one in iTunes or restore my iPod itself? The press the circle button then press menu for a long time in my iPod? I already did that.
It says 174.32. I only have about 700 something songs because I tried deleting some to see if deleting some songs would help fix the problem but no. It's strange because before all my songs and playlists disappeared in my iPod, I even had more songs in my iPod than what I have in iTunes now.
About 15-30 minutes ago, I was able to put only about 9-10 songs in my iPod because it says it doesn't have enough free space. It's so strange, it really frustrates me.

  • My ipod touch say cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the library but I have 10 gb of space left

My ipod touch shows 10.1 gb of memory, but when I try to transfer a movie from my computer to ipod touch I get a error message that says "Cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the itunes library, additional 5.81 gb required.
I have had as many as 3-4 movies on here plus my music and had no problem, there are no other movies on my ipod.  Wasssup???  I am 66 years old, can build a house or a car engine, but for the life of me I don't understand this stuff....Help!!

Unless the move is about 16 GB, you are trying to sync more that the movie to your iPod. I would look carefull at awhat is checked to sync to the iPod.
Also how big is the "other" category as shown in the colored bargraph in iTunes?

That message is telling you that you do not have enough stgorage on the iPod to accomodate all the media you are trying to sync to the iPod.

One day I connected my iPod to iTunes and when I disconnected it when it said 'Ok to disconnect', when I turned on my iPod, all my songs and playlists disappeared.
In iTunes, it says that it can't be synced because there's not enough free space.
*My iPod mini has 4 GB space, and currently the songs in my iPod only take up 174.32 GB.*
Then it says in the message that 2.88 GB required and that there's only 52 MB left.
What is wrong with my iPod/iTunes? It's frustrating me so much already, you have no idea. Please, please help me, I'm already so desperate.
